Terrible service. Wanted to relax and enjoy my breakfast with a family member, but was asked 4 times "are you finished?". This was within 45 minutes. Near the end of our meal, two people walked in and the waitress shouted "two people waiting for a booth!", which was basically the staff telling us to leave. We just moved into the neighborhood and had heard great things about Ezzells. It is easy, inexpensive, satisfying diner food. No frills, but I felt good about the quality of everything we got. We got there on a Saturday right before 9 and we're able to snag 2 seats at the bar/counter right away. Service was quick- you can tell they have this down- and they were great about refilling my coffee. We both had a great breakfast, and will be making this a regular weekend spot! Heads up, yelp says that they're open on Sundays, but when we tried to walk over last Sunday they were closed. Not sure if that's every week or just when we went. read more

Kait's got it right, except for our favorite part - outside seating! 4 picnic tables across from Legion field to enjoy the sun and an affordable breakfast. Hipsters and locals from Sunset Park wander in on their bikes and pickups...I'm really glad we stopped by this past weekend. Corned Beef hash, eggs, pancakes were all above average. Disgusting. Seriously if you have any taste you won't like this greasy spoon. I love me a greasy spoon but this is just bad food. So many issues. The bacon was frazzled to a paper like consistency. The hash browns were literally wet and mushy and without telling us they asked if we wanted onions added so we said sure and found out they charged us for onions in the stupid mushy hash browns. My husband and I have been coming here for years and we've yet to have a bad experience! Love the shredded hash browns, which are crispy and taste fresh. Our eggs have been cooked nicely and the toast is hot and buttered when it comes to the table. The coffee is nice and hot and tastes great. The service is excellent and they take great care in making sure that everything is cooked to your satisfaction. The food is cooked fresh when you order and I like the fact that you can see it being cooked. Dining room is small and sometimes, there's a wait to be seated. After seeing all the positive reviews online I was looking forward to trying this local diner. However, I was disappointed with my experience. Upon ordering I was told they had "thrown out" the last of the sausage gravy because it was "late". They didn't close for another hour and a half. Besides, you should never 86 an item in a resturaunt. It's just bad etiquette. On top of that my biscuit was old and soggy, my bacon was soft and poorly cooked, and the entire time I ate I had to listen to the server and the cook talk about how they "couldn't wait to get out of there". It made me feel unwelcome. As if I was holding them up by visiting their resturaunt. This is all unfortunate because my girlfriend and I were looking for a new breakfast spot to frequent weekly. Old school breakfast house. I don't like to give bad reviews but this place really is below average. The grits were runny and void of any seasoning. The eggs were overcooked and the bacon seemed to have been cooked in one big batch and kept under a heat lamp imo. Im a very slow eater and like to read while I eat. For the first thirty minutes the staff seemed to be more interested in chatting with regulars than keep in my tea glass full. After about thirty minutes they started to pay more attention, I guess because it was starting to get busy and they needed to rush me out the door to make room. Coming from a diner state, we welcomed the atmosphere of this "breakfast only" longtime local favorite. At first it took us time to find the vibe of what is clearly a gem that moves to it's own rhythm. If you are those who wake up and prefer quiet first thing in the morning, this is not the place for you. People who eat here all know each other and go out of their way say say "good morning" while they place a coffee cup on the counter with pot in hand. This is a family service environment, who when you watch, seamlessly moves in a way as only longtime employees can. The food is always fresh, filling and the coffee plentiful. No frills at it's best. Promise me if you go, go with an open mind. The worse thing you could do it to turn around and walk out without at least a cuppa. Remember this is the South as it is in all it has to offer. The size of the restaurant is small so you may have to wait for a seat at times. I combat that by going in off peak times. The food is always cooked to order by folks that have been doing it all their lives. In my opinion they have some of the best hash browns (I'm talking about the finely-shredded variety) of any place I've ever eaten at (and I've eaten at literally thousands). They have all the great breakfast meats from patty and link sausage, to country ham, bacon, steak, pork chops and one of my favorites, fried bologna! Pancakes are light and tasty, eggs are fresh (and they know how to fix 'em soft-scrambled), the grits are soft and buttery and they offer a grilled biscuit that's out of this world. There's a reason why the place is packed every morning. It's down-home good food at a reasonable price. Do yourself a favor and visit Ezzell's Breakfast House. You'll be glad you did. read more

Don't go here if you are a party of one. After leaving my doctor's office I decided to stop for a late breakfast (11AM), primarily because of the reviews. I "seated" myself in an open booth and had started looking at the menu on the table. A waitress came over and said since I was by myself I should sit at the counter (on a wobbly bar stool) or at a table for 6-8 with a stranger because the booths were for larger parties. As a couple visiting during our relocation (CA to NC) trip, this is the place that sold us on Wilmington and the people of Wilmington. We've been consistently amazed at the friendliness of the people here, waiting in line at Ezzells and then sitting at the community table with 7 other people was the highlight. The servers, the customers, all very friendly. Most friendly were the prices and goodness of the breakfast dishes. Coffey cup was constantly filled, even better service than at home, wife could take notes. You could tell the food was good, nobody with their faces in a phone, all either eating or talking while they eat. read more
