    A classic breakfast lace

Probably the best value breakfast in Coronado. Nothing fancy. Nothing spectacular. Just honest food with great service. The place is usually a waiting line on the weekends. This is my favorite things about Coronado

Our first experience we only ordered from the side window. Today we sat down and ate inside the restaurant. We put our names down on a Friday at 11am. Our wait time for (4) people was 25 minutes. The staff gave us a table that accommodated my baby stroller which was very kind of them. We had our food by 11:45am. Our waitress checked up on us consistently. Rating the food I actually tried - 5/5 Chicken fried steak 5/5 Cornbeef Eggs Benny 1/5 Levi's Banana Ricotta Pecan pancakes - $16.99 for a stack of 2 dinky sized pancakes. The name sounded way better than what was actually served. The ricotta fluff on top was odd and had a baking flour aftertaste. There was zero banana flavor. The pancakes were bland. I was very disappointed. My father in law ordered a burger and my mother in law loved her side of crispy bacon. My husband said the cornbeef hash eggs Benny was great quality!

The club sandwich was so good! And the onion rings were probably one of the best I've had. Way better than Rubys. The service was phenomenal, I didn't get her name but she was very nice and patient with it being our first time there.

Clayton's is a quaint coffee shop/diner in the heart of Coronado. It's been around since the 30s (different owners) and has a retro vibe to it with th red vinyl, jukeboxes, and vintage style decor. The music playlist was 80s new wave which was awesome. It's not a big restaurant but there is indoor and outdoor seating. We sat at the u-shaped bar which I find more fun. The service was very friendly and efficient We ordered the ribeye steak and eggs. The steak was okay but the eggs and potatoes were good. We also ordered the corned beef hash eggs Benedict which was really good. The corned beef is homemade and the eggs were perfectly juicy. I replaced the usual potatoes it comes with and had crinkle cut fries. So glad I did. I also had buttermilk pancakes. They were fluffy, yummy, and best of all not dry. Overall we had a great experience here and would return.

So excited...where do I even begin. We stopped in just by chance walking by and we were not disappointed. Our waiter has the greatest bow tie with dachshunds on it only to find out that he is also a dachshund owner like us. He was so friendly. He made great suggestions and we had the absolute breakfast with the chilaquiles and the huevos rancheros. Perfectly cooked with just enough heat to make your nose run. Delicious! It is the best breakfast around and the coffee is just amazing!

Spent the day in Coronado and this place always had a long line. But at 8 PM on a Monday night there was no line no wait and we were able to sit at the counter. We went in for a cup of coffee and a piece of apple pie. We absolutely loved the apple pie. The Granny Smith apple was sliced very thin and the crust was so flaky. So good. Our server was super nice. We ordered our coffee to go but ate the pie at the counter. She was kind to ask if we needed more coffee in our to go cups.

Easily the best diner on Coronado Island. There has been a coffee shop/diner here since 1938 so it has served countless locals and tourists over the decades which I think is really great. We were a party of four and had to wait about 20 minutes for an outside table on the Sunday after XMAS, otherwise there are a handful of booths and a very large U-shaped counter on the inside. Our server was very friendly and everything that we ordered came out very fast, almost shockingly fast. They don't have a dedicated parking lot so the best option will be street parking. Inside of the restaurant is really well done, it has a 1950s retro diner look to it so it's a really great place to spend some time, especially if you are a fan of the oldies or are a boomer who can reminisce like my parents. I started off my breakfast with a Cinnamon Roll and thought it was fantastic. It was really light but very flavorful at the same time. I especially loved the glaze and I would highly recommend. For my meal I ordered the Country Benedict and really liked it. I wish they would have crumbled the bacon, but that's just a personal preference. Overall, it was a great meal and I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Coronado.

What a great diner experience. We sat at the bar and the food was great. The wait staff was awesome and we were eating within 10 minutes of arriving. Love it. Be sure to read about the history on their website

I love going to Clayton's Coffee Shop. It feels like stepping back in time. Originally opened in 1938 (back when it was Gerry's Coffee Shop), has been a Coronado staple for generations. The old-school diner vibe, with the classic counter and vintage feel, is something you just don't find much anymore. Great comfort food, friendly service, and timeless charm. I love stopping by to sit outside in the sun with my dog, also I recommend the biscuits and gravy!

Had such a great experience at Clayton's Coffee Shop! We went on a Saturday and were pleasantly surprised that the wait time was only about 10 minutes. My boyfriend and I got to sit in the booth area, which made the experience even better because we could watch the amazing staff working hard and see all the delicious food coming out fresh. Leila their team member was amazing she has excellent customer service skills and you can truly see that she enjoys her job. The prices are very reasonable, the portions are generous, and the food tastes authentic and absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was fun, welcoming, and gave that classic diner feel. Already looking forward to our next trip to Coronado so we can make this our first stop again!

I'm SOOOO glad the place up the street had a 45 minute wait because Clayton's Coffee Shop was awesome. Yeah, it's tight, most people sit around the counter and you're close to someone you won't know, but the food is fantastic, the service was excellent, and the place was simply fun. The coffee here was excellent...and they pay attention to your cup and keep it filled. I built my meal a bit and ordered three eggs, two sausage patties, two biscuits and a side of grits. The biscuits here are huge...don't be a dummy like Steve. Wifey ordered the Mary's Toad in the road - egg over easy on sourdough and a biscuit with honey. Both of us loved our meals. I do have to say it was nice to see grits on the menu, but they were just ok. This place is honestly, Organized chaos...it was glorious. Our server was great-super friendly. Our 15 minute wait was more like three. Absolutely loved the feel of the old time diner. You'll see a photo of some delicious looking cookies that we didn't order and they also offer HUGE cinnamon buns with cream cheese frosting. They looked amazing.

My friend and I stopped to this cute diner that looks straight out of a movie. They have more than just regular brunch options, but also including mexican brunch like huevos rancheros, chilaquiles and seasonal mexican inspired drinks. Despite the restaurant was busy at 4pm, the service was pretty astronomical, attentive, and suggestive when needed. Very old school vibes with history also shown in the menu. Would make a great first date spot if you ask me!

I really enjoy this place. Every time I've gone. The food has been delicious, it's a cute decorated place in which you can eat inside or outside. The food is almost always delicious. No matter what you pick. I would say the only complaint I've had is out of the couple times. I've been here the service hasn't been the best it could be because I usually go for breakfast, and it tends to be packed. No other complaints.

Our server was Chris and he was OUTSTANDING...very attentive and very friendly. Both managers visited our table several time to make sure we were good. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that what I had was just a bit underwhelming. We ordered the braised beef potstickers, california roll, and grilled and chilled shrimp for appetizers. The meat in the potstickers was very mushy. The california roll was decent. The grilled and chilled shrimp were fine. My husband had the filet - ordered medium well, served medium...the twice baked potato was very small and seemed to be overcooked. I had the lemon chicken entree - the taste was good, but was just a bit dry...it was served with fries, which was fine. The other couple ordered the skirt steak and the braised short ribs which they seemed to enjoy. My drink was amazing - the Amalfi Spritz. For dessert, we tried the butter cake...again, a bit underwhelming and not really good on flavor...I did taste the toffee and caramel, but the cake itself had no taste. Overall, I would go back because of the service, the drinks, and the ambiance.

The food is good I guess. The wagyu taco had a nice flavor and the greens with the sauce made it work. I don't think it's actually wagyu, but the word is pretty much meaningless at this point. For the crust, I found it to be way too chewy rather than light and flaky. I couldn't even cut it with my spoon anymore and had to pick up a long thing of crust and pull it apart with my teeth. I will allow that the gravy and other contents are bland and generic since if it had as much flavor as I actually want, other customers will be complaining about it. But the crust I cannot forgive. Overall it was not bad though. Surprisingly, my favorite item was the brussels sprouts. Even with all the seasoning and cheese, I found the flavor to be well balanced. Even after most of the plate, I noticed I didn't find it too salty. I really like the menus in the crappy brown folders. I think they might've also done it because it's easy and cheap, but it works well with the aesthetic they have.

In my opinion, the true measure of a business is how it handles things when something goes wrong, and this restaurant handled the situation exactly the way a quality establishment should. Here's what happened: I stopped in briefly to use the restroom and grab one of the spritzers they make here. First off, the spritzer is absolutely delicious -- light, refreshing, and something I highly recommend if you visit. Unfortunately, my interaction with the host was less than stellar. I asked about ordering the spritzer and was told two things: 1. He didn't think they made it. 2. He "didn't have time." That response honestly caught me off guard. A paying customer walks in asking to purchase a product your restaurant does in fact make, and the answer is that you don't have time? Serving guests is literally the core function of hospitality. Thankfully, one of the waitresses, Rachel, who had helped me during a previous visit completely turned the experience around. I asked her for the drink and without hesitation she smiled and said, "Right away!" Within moments she returned with the spritzer in hand. Professional, courteous, and exactly the kind of service that keeps people coming back. I explained the interaction to her and she looked genuinely puzzled. I later mentioned it to the manager, whom I've met before and always found to be approachable, professional, and kind. He was clearly appalled by what happened and handled the situation with sincerity and care. That's exactly why this place continues to earn high marks from me. Problems can happen anywhere. What matters is whether management and experienced staff know how to recover -- and they absolutely did. The seasoned staff and management here understand hospitality. Based on this interaction alone, I honestly think the host may simply be better suited for a non-customer-facing role.

It's typically packed with kids and tourists, but it was a beautiful day and we wanted ocean views without the drive. We grabbed a corner spot with a $175 minimum, easy to hit when the menu is priced like everything was flown in from Monaco. Water: asked three times, never came. The fourth time we finally got it, and only because the manager dropped it off himself after my husband spoke to him. Water is the bare minimum. It shouldn't feel like a favor. The food came out in five minutes. Five. That's not a kitchen, that's a heat lamp. Lukewarm at best, some of it cold. The giveaway: they brought us a kids' chicken fingers plate, realized we'd ordered the adult portion, took it back, then sprinted off to grab the bigger version. That's a steam tray with a hostess. And the lobster Cobb? The lobster was cut into little circles. Circles. Lobster has never been a circle. The servers moved around like expressionless robots. When my husband politely asked to speak with the manager privately, out of respect for the staff, the manager came over looking like he couldn't care less. Somehow the service got worse after that. He comped a burger and one other item. We still walked out near $175. The cherry on top? His apology was throwing his own employee under the bus. "Yeah, he's had a lot of complaints lately." That's not a manager. That's Gossip Girl with a clipboard. Be a leader. Handle it behind the scenes. This is exactly why the staff is the way they are because leadership comes from the top and if that's broken the whole operation is broken. We left and went to The Dive rooftop at The Bower Hotel. Sat down, and within a minute someone dropped off water. We sat there genuinely grateful, which is when it hit us how badly we'd been treated. Save your $175. The view is free!!!!!

Captain's Log, Stardate 21483…read more This past Sunday, I charted a course to Nicky Rottens in Coronado, a delightful establishment located at the end of Orange Avenue. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by an uplifting open-air environment, truly a breath of fresh air that felt like stepping onto the observation deck of the USS Enterprise. The amazing views of the bay were nothing short of spectacular, bringing a serene beauty that rivals the finest star systems. Over the years, my wife, her girlfriend, and I have become frequent travelers to this culinary haven, beaming back for nearly 15 years--a testament to its enduring allure. The selection of IPAs and mixed drinks is impressive, catering to even the most discerning palates in the galaxy. The choices are vast enough to satisfy anyone embarking on this flavor exploration, whether you prefer a refreshing drink to toast a successful mission or something bolder, like a phaser on stun! The menu features a delightful array of options, including fresh salads, tantalizing finger foods, and, of course, their famed burgers. My wife's enthusiasm for the offerings has always been infectious, and during this visit, she and her girlfriend were on a culinary adventure of their own, indulging in the flavors that have made Nicky Rottens a local favorite. The burgers are truly out of this world--juicy, flavorful, and expertly crafted to ensure a warp-speed experience with every bite. You'll find that each dish is prepared with precision, as if overseen by a skilled chef with the abilities of a Vulcan and the passion of a true culinary Starfleet officer. In conclusion, Nicky Rottens is a prime destination for anyone seeking a vibrant atmosphere, stunning views, and a solid meal. I can confidently say that if you ever find yourself in Coronado, this establishment is a must-visit. After all, it's just one small step for man, and one giant leap into deliciousness! Live long and prosper. End log. Captain 619

Got a paloma and the flavor was more intense than I expected, but it was pretty good…read more Tater tots are nice and crispy, great texture. Aside from that, they're generic normal tasting tater tots. For the burger, I liked the bun and other ingredients, but thought the savoriness of the meat was just okay. Also, can't say I'm a huge fan of the tiny lettuce whenever I see it. Overall, this joint is not bad, but I can think of very little about it that stands out. I don't feel that it fully leans into being a sports bar or dive bar or even as a burger joint. It's just.....a bar. Apparently, it prides itself as being an original coronado spot, but I didn't get that kinda vibe here. I don't know.
