Then you select your treats, head to the dessert case (if you're feeling ice cream or cake), then go to pay or order your drink! Today I got an ube bun (the bright purple one) and a carmelized custard. The ube bun itself is soft and fluffy, and mildly dense interior-not red bean thick, but a nice smooth mashed potato of dessert. I've been to Brecotea a few times and I do enjoy coming. My favorite thing to get is the chicken curry donut and the pineapple bun. They have a large variety of flavors and types of buns/bread to choose from along with desserts(cake) and milk tea. I usually go for the buns because I enjoy them the most. The only reason I'm taking one star off is because I don't like some of their classics. The egg tart I got one time was not the best and the red bean bun filling was not my favorite (also there wasn't much in it). My recommendation is to just try because they have good buns! You just have to find one you like. The people at the counter are super nice and they are helpful if trays run out. This place has the potential to be a great 5-Star pastry/boba/tea spot but the experience of dining there holds it back. Many 'Instagrammable' pictures you can take there from the settings to the pastries in the glass itself. Walking in, we found ourselves very confused of what to do/where to go. We notice a very long line to the register but not sure how you order. Some people had food and trays in their hands while others didn't so we weren't sure of what the line was even for. To make it more confusing, there are two touchscreen kiosks where apparently you can order from as well...not sure why everyone just stayed in line opposed to using that. Once we figured it out, if we want pastries, we go to the glass case with our trays and pick out what we want (literally hand picked with tongs...that I'm not sure who else even used or touched). It gets real hectic and kind of unsanitary when the employee brings out more pastries on their big cart and people rush to pick from that. The line was long so I decided to at least order our drinks from kiosk which I learned became irrelevant as there were a lot of drinks they ran out of but didn't say on the kiosk (I had to find out the hard way, which made for a longer wait) The food itself was really good, I will say that. The pork floss rolls were my favorite and there's a good variety to choose from, if you can make that ridiculous rush. For the Triangle, I think Brecotea is great. Though I have to admit, I still haven't been to my fair share of Asian bakery-cafes and bubble tea shops in the area. My rating is partially based in relation to what I think you can find in the area. Really, what I mainly have Brecotea to compare against are the plethora of similar businesses I'm familiar with in metro Atlanta and then other larger metros. Brecotea is the first Asian bakery-cafe in the Triangle to impress me. I think their bubble tea can stand up to some of the better businesses in more competitive markets. One of my friends in Atlanta, who's a bubble tea connoisseur, recommended Brecotea to my wife and me. The pictures she'd send us of her bubble tea from Brecotea looked legit. She likes Breco's Oolong Bubble Milk Tea and her mom likes Breco's Fresh Fruit Tea. She specifically praised Breco's boba (tapioca pearls). She told me that she "love[s] it when places take their boba seriously and never serve [bad] and bland boba." She compared it favorably to OneZo, a bubble tea brand from Taiwan known for its outstanding-quality boba. Her bubble tea opinion is one I take seriously. After my wife and I tried Brecotea's boba for ourselves, I have to say I agree with my friend - Breco's boba is excellent. However, I also agreed with my wife that it wasn't perfect. I'd consider my wife a bubble tea connoisseur too. I thought Breco's boba was borderline too soft. My wife thought Breco's boba was a little too mushy. Usually, when I don't like boba, it's because it's too hard. Brecotea actually had the opposite problem. Their boba was so soft and mushy that some of the boba stuck together. This made the stuck-together blobs of boba hard or impossible to suck through a straw. That said, I'd rather my boba be too soft than too hard. It really is a balance when trying to perfect boba taste and texture. As far as taste went, Breco's boba tasted delectable and not overly sweet. Breco serves over 50 types of tea, not including flavor variations. Aside from the types mentioned above and below, they include Yogurt Tea, Milk Cap Tea, "Paradise Tea," and Sparking Tea. They also offer espresso and other coffee drinks plus milkshakes and ice cream. Expect to spend at least about $5-8 per drink after tax and tip. Here were the teas we tried: #2. Yuen Yeung Milk Tea (medium, $4.55) #13. Boba Taro Milk Latte (medium, $4.95) #11. Boba Brown Sugar Cake Shake (medium, $4.75) #14. Boba Taro Matcha Latte (medium, $4.95) The Yuen Yeung Milk Tea is also known as coffee with tea. It was good. I could definitely taste both the coffee flavor and the tea flavor in the drink. The type of tea used was Roasted Oolong. Breco has regular Oolong too. The coffee and tea flavors were well-balanced. The Boba Taro Milk Latte, Boba Brown Sugar Cake Shake, and Boba Taro Matcha Latte all came from the Boba Brown Sugar Milk section of the menu. I thought all three of these drinks tasted fantastic. My personal favorite was the Boba Brown Sugar Cake Shake. I'd never had anything like it before. It was like a Boba Brown Sugar Milk Tea with cake batter added for extra richness and sweetness. I could feel the yummy grittiness of the cake batter in between my teeth as I drank the milk tea and chewed the boba. I think some people might find this drink too sweet and therefore, I don't recommend it to everyone. However, if you like cake/cake batter - for example, I like ice cream like birthday cake ice cream that has real cake batter in it - then the Boba Brown Sugar Cake Shake should be right up your alley. The Boba Taro Lattes had real taro in them. We got some food as well. Like other Asian bakeries and cafes, Breco has display cases filled with a variety of sweet and savory pastries, cakes, and other treats/desserts. We tried a few items from the cake displays: * Mango Mousse ($3.99 per slice) * Fruit Puff ($3.99 per slice) * Original Swiss Roll ($3.99 per slice) * Durian Mille Crepe ($7.99 per slice) Of the above, my favorite was the Original Swiss Roll. It was creamy, chocolaty, and perfectly moist. I recommend it, even though I know it's one of the simpler cakes. My wife's favorite was the Fruit Puff. The Fruit Puff contained ripe strawberry and kiwi. The puff had a nice and crumbly exterior texture. Both the Fruit Puff and Mango Mousse weren't too sweet, which we liked. The consistency of the Mille Crepe Cake was terrific, but the flavor and smell of the Durian wasn't good. Durian is hit or miss with me so I knew I was taking a chance when I ordered it. I'd never had a Mille Crepe Cake in Durian flavor before. I suggest playing it safe and trying one of the other Mille Crepe flavors. The store itself is beautiful. It's got a polished, classy, elegant, and contemporary look. It's a wonderful hangout/meetup spot. And there's plenty of seating, inside and out. This Brecotea location in Cary opened in August 2020.
