I checked out Brick and Bell Cafe in La Jolla and I absolutely loved it. The servers were so kind and friendly. The actual place was so charming. I loved the outside with the brick and the cute wooden signs. They had tables outside that were filled with happy people. Inside it was chock full of things to eat and drink. I was in love with the display case filled with so many delicious desserts. I pretty much wanted everything but settled for a mini chocolate chip scone and an Oat Milk Latte. They both were amazing. I ran into a friend there which really made me feel like a local! Anyway, I guess I am! She told me that their berry scones were to die for. I will have to try that next time. I try not to go to the same place twice because it gets pricey and I want to try new places but I cannot say no to the opportunity for a delicious scone. I love scones! Best scones, favorite is the maple scone. Perfect blend of maple and sconishiness. Try it and see. Service is efficient and ambience inspires contemplation. I've been a patron of this business on and off for the better part of 10 years. First as a high school student and then as a professional working in the area. This establishment is best known for casual breakfast/lunch items, pastries, and cafe drinks and it has a strong local following. In all honesty, the food is average quality but it's generally put out quickly and isn't as expensive as other cafes in the area. They used to have super friendly and kind staff that always greeted me and remembered me but that is not the case anymore. The service needs major improvements. It seems that almost all of the friendly and experienced staff have been moved over to the new concept location next store, Brick and Bell Plus, and this location is suffering because of it. One newer staff member in particular at this location is not friendly to some repeat customers, myself included, at all. She was standoffish and flat-out unfriendly. I was standing at the checkout counter, in an almost empty restaurant, and watched as all the staff talked and joked around and then she turned around and said nothing to me after she realized I had been standing there patiently and politely. After I paid, she proceeded to place my food ticket down for no one else to see and then I saw her immediately being engaging and friendly with other local repeat customers. After a while of standing there, no one checked to see if I was waiting on anything and I had to inquire where my simple food item was (this has happened before but I've let it slide as it was much busier). It was then rushed out to me and was not satisfactory. I don't understand the difference in service quality between different customers or the lack of urgency. It's completely off-putting and unacceptable. It's the reason I won't be returning for a long time or ever...or until this staff gets some better customer service training. This review would have been 3 or 4 stars if not for my negative experiences after being a customer for a decade. The staff is what made this place enjoyable and worth returning to but I will take my business elsewhere to avoid the attitude. read more

Located in the heart of The Village, this cute cafe has been La Jolla's neighborhood meeting spot for 19 years. Locals go here..and it's usually pretty busy with people working on their laptops or smartphones, reading the paper, hanging with their friends or pets. We got a few things to eat and most stuff was good. The Sunrise sandwich is made with eggs, bacon, tomatoes & cheddar cheese and can be served on a bagel, bread, wrap or croissant. I got the one on a croissant and it was just average. The croissant itself was not flaky as a true French croissant is, but it was ok. The bacon was warm and crispy, but the other parts of the sandwich tasted refrigerator cold... My step son got the Sunrise on a bagel and that looked better. Maybe that's what I will get next time. The almond croissant that I got old was not fresh. It tasted day old. The pastry was dry and the filling was also dry. My partner & I visited right before our little road trip because we heard the pastries are really good. It looked super cute and seemed to be a local favorite. I will say, the banana bread and scone we got was so good. It wasn't dry or too sweet which we loved. However, a couple of stars were taken off because the service was okay. When we were ordering, we couldn't hear the cashiers voice, so we were confused when she asked us a question. She seemed really annoyed and we felt bad because she had to repeat herself. But despite that, she just stared at us as if we were dumb so I had to ask her if she was asking me which type of bread I wanted. I apologized to her because I couldn't hear her properly due to the loud ambiance of the cafe, but she just asked if we were done ordering. I wish I lived closer to this little gem of a coffee shop! There are two locations but I typically go to the one on Silverado. All of my customer service experiences have been very welcoming and incredibly friendly. They are patient with my kids and their ever-changing minds. The prices blow my mind. Their pastries are so fairly priced it's hard not to buy more than you need just to take some home. Their scones are my favorite. Fluffy and dense on the inside with a nice little crust on the outside. They offer a few gluten free options as well as full breakfast/lunch as well. I've tried their omelette and bacon plate. Loved it. My family has also tried the avocado toast, sunrise sandwich on croissant, and the cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon roll we got fresh out of the oven and it was devoured amongst us all within minutes. I've been to Brick & Bell over 10 times since 2021, and it's always a solid choice after surfing or while waiting for a table at Shorehouse Kitchen nearby. The cafe sneaks up on you, walking down the street, tucked away in a cute building that's been there since the 1950s. There's ample seating out front and in the back, though the shop itself gets crowded quickly. Baristas take orders quickly, though some of the heartier food options (e.g.: sandwiches, avocado toast) can take a while to assemble. Their traditional espresso drinks are where they shine. The cortado is well executed, the mik and expressing mixing into a wonderful, velvety pick-me-up. The drip is solid too, and my partner is always satisfied with her latte. Ordering something from the seasonal menu has never gone well for me. The pastries are also good; their scones are some of my favorite in the city. The maple ones are moist, perfectly crumbly, and have the right amount of sweetness. I remember being pleased with their croissants as well. Everything in the pastry box looks very tasty, so you'll easily find something to your liking. The only bad thing I've had there is a smoothie, which used apple juice as a base liquid. It never could escape that cloying apple juice flavor, and it made the whole smoothie way too sweet. Stick with traditional coffee shop fare, and Brick & Bell will never steer you wrong! read more

I ordered a matcha latte with oat milk and a BLT on sourdough. The matcha latte was honestly quite disappointing, it tasted watered down and was not a matcha taste that I was familiar with. Next time if I come back, I think i'll order a coffee instead. The BLT was tasty, but the bacon was extremely crunchy. I typically like crispy bacon over softer bacon, but this bacon was so crunchy that every bite I took, the bacon was breaking into pieces. They are texturally perfect - light, airy, and crumbly without being dry. My favorite flavor is cranberry, but I truly love them all. The blueberry beckoned me today with its plethora of plump, juicy berries studded within, on top, and all over. Best part? Scones come in two sizes - regular (aka ginormous) or mini (aka normal), so you can pick your poison depending on your level of gluttony for the day. Fresh baked goods. Decently priced overall. Friendly staff. Had ordered 2 lattes, a mini blueberry scone, a large cranberry scone for the 2 of us and grabbed a fruit cup for the doggo. Another friend had ordered a cappuccino w/ a croissant. Latte was a bit light. Scone was good and tasty. Crumbly and soft. Seems like a lot of people visit here with their doggos. I work across the street from this place and here are my fave things: 1- Passion Fruit Iced Tea is SO good, it's fresh, unsweetened but has an amazing tropical flavor 2 - Tangerine Loaf, it's absolute scrumptious, not overly sweet, and definitely melt in your mouth and I'm gonna say it: MOIST!! 3 - Breakfast bacon bagel sandwich, you can get it with cream cheese too if you prefer and it's very filling, it of course has egg but also has tomato which is really really tasty! I am glad this place is across the street, but it can get quite busy in the morning and lunch time. A beautiful warm Wednesday and was looking for a nice coffee shop that I have yet to check out in San Diego! Parking is street parking (range from 1-2 hour spots, though paid parking garage nearby I believe). Free wifi worked well, though personally don't think would be an ideal place if you need to spend more than 2+ hours -- due to lack of outlet plugs and of course street parking limitations. I work remote/wfh so I stayed for 2 hours to finish off my work day. The outdoor seating (there is no indoor seating) was peaceful even with chatter of other customers seated around and coming in and out. Standing umbrella shades were nicely posted outside around the tables. Drink - Iced Chai Latte with Almond Milk: I came at around 2:30PM and already had my morning coffee, so I opted for a chai which I saw had great reviews on here. It was tasty! I did ask for almond milk, however it tasted like it may have been regular dairy/whole milk? Not entirely sure...if it was correctly almond milk then I would love to know what brand they use, being that the consistency and flavor replicated whole milk, but aside from that, the flavor was creamy, spiced, and pretty much on point and certainly would order again. It was not watery at all as sometimes I find that chai lattes are a hit or miss. Food - Maple Scone: I saw reviews and photos of the maple scone and the sales associate working mentioned the blueberry and maple were very popular pastries, though her personal favorite were the cookies. I opted for a maple scone and it was great! A bit dry in some bites, though expected sometimes for a scone consistency. Would order again as the maple glaze and flavor was satisfying. THE CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE It's out of this world. I live about an hour away but came down 2 Fridays in a row after discovering their sinfully delightful chocolate cheesecake. It's homemade with a crunchy Oreo crust and creamy chocolate filling. The slice is HUGE but you definitely want to finish it anyway. Love, love, love!
