First off, let's be clear about this location, Brick Maiden does not have a retail outlet. The location listed here is indeed the bakery, gorgeous old building, but they do no sell bread here at all. You'll need to head over to Bovine Bakery, Cowgirl Creamery, Palace Market, etc. to purchase their tasty artisan loaves. I ended up buying a few loaves from Cowgirl Creamy, including a gorgeous baguette. If you're looking for the bread specifically, you'll need to ignore the amazing cheese and head directly to the back of the store. The loaves are binned next to the gift shop. On our visit there were only three different types to choose from, I think they were around $6 each plus tax. The bread itself is beautifully crusty with a super moist crumb. Definitely up there in terms of crazy good loaves around the bay. Oh, if you pick up from Cowgirl and can't wait to eat your loaf, they sell cultured butter in the cold case. Or better yet, slather it with one of their amazing soft Brie like cheeses. read more

Had a perfect and unusual tuna salad here on my way out of town and also had an amazing cookie from them. Amazing bread and was glad to see them observing COVID safety rules, though I felt bad for them because 2 people with a big cross dangling from their car mirror were standing a few feet from the takeout window not wearing masks and barking into their cell phones projecting their aerosoles perilously close to the woman working the window. despite the signs all over town saying masks have to worn and there are fines for not doing so. A recent reviewer strangely claimed she would never return to Brickmaiden (and gave them a poor rating) because they didn't have gingerbread--in early November. Well, they have it now (a seasonal treat), and I tried it based on her review: it is wonderful! Moist and full of flavor, not too sweet. Brickmaiden is a West Marin gem. Many know their breads that are sold in local groceries, but miss their full array of delectable baked goods available only at their bakery in Pt Reyes Station. If you are there, try the masala chai, made in house--another special treat. I also love their savory scones and savory bread pudding--different flavors every time I go. I live in SF, where there is no shortage of high quality bakeries, but go to Brickmaiden every chance I get. read more

Got here too late (1230pm on a Sunday) to try the hand pies but the ginger scone and olive sourdough were amazing. Scone was packed full of sharp candied ginger, with a nice crust and tender crumb. Olive sourdough had nice aeration, chew, and just enough tang, with plenty of olives. Have to get up here earlier next time to try their other pastries! read more

Make Brickmaiden Breads your first stop of your day! You'll be glad you did! The bread is fantastic! The sourdough baguette has a rustic, crunchy crust with an inside that's perfect for cheese, olive oil or devouring as is. We tried both the Meyer lemon/blueberry scone and the strawberry/cornbread scone. I would highly recommend both of them. The chocolate croissant was flaky and buttery with just enough chocolate filling. You can't go wrong no matter what you choose at Brickmaiden. They are the real deal! read more

Everything I've had at Brickmaiden has been out-of-this-world delicious. The olive oil cake is especially divine - super moist & not too sweet. I recommend their savory tarts, which must be made with a tremendous amount of butter. Whoa - just wow - we got a grilled cheese from Cowgirl creamery on some of their bread on it, so we checked them out at the farmers market. We got a full loaf of there sourdough pullman as well as a fruit pie and some other stuff. WOW - I made a grilled cheese out of that and it was sooo good. We are from Palo Alto, so have some excellent sourdough (and I make pretty good sourdough), but this leaves all others in the dust. I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend them - they are bit off the beaten path, so seek them out. I'd give Bovine bakery a 4 and them a 5. If you come to Pt Reyes station, you should buy some stuff from them - if you don't, you done messed up, son! read more

Behind an iron gate is a charming little house where, if you stop in at the right time ( their hours are limited at the moment) you will be able to consume an ambrosial plum tart with a buttery glaze and a glass of Andy's Blend coffee. Um, excuse you, how dare you have the most delicious slice of cake I've ever tasted and be so far away from me?! We stumbled into this bakery because cowgirl creamery next door happened to be closed. We got a loaf of sesame bread (good), a latte (also good, they have non dairy options), and a slice of the olive oil citrus cake and oh dear lord, this cake. We only got a slice and didn't eat it til we were on our way back to sf and that might be one of my biggest regrets of my life because if I ate it earlier, I would've gotten more slices. Not sure if this is a regular item but if it is, and you happen to find yourself here, get it. Get many slices of it. It is damn good. Best whole wheat loaf I have ever eaten. It costs $6.50 but WTF cares, it is artwork as well as food. Reality check -- some people spend that for an oversized burger combo at McDonald's and think it's normal. So buy this bread and spend less on junk that day. Or don't buy anything else that day. This is all you need. Chewy crust, light and moist inside, packaged in some paper that keeps it from drying out right away -- it's even better than Acme's Edible Schoolyard loaf and that is saying a lot. It's the only whole wheat bread I've ever eaten that I crave more than mixed grain or white. How do they do it? I picture a large, ancient stone oven perched on a rocky crag overlooking the ocean at Point Reyes, the ocean adding a tang to the air that works its way into the bread...cows and sheep everywhere noshing on the green sward to make cheese to eat with that bread...shrill gulls circling, demanding that I throw them some bread (but I won't, not this bread). read more

Simply the BEST! Tartine and Acme are excellent but this is our favorite. Every 10 days we drive 40 miles round trip to Point Reyes to buy the baguettes and sometimes a whole round. They freeze well although the first fresh loaf is always the best. Maybe we should move to Point Reyes? Poilane Bakery in Paris is excellent and probably the most famous bread in the world. We arrived at Point Reyes Station hoping for something fresh from one of the local bakeries. The entire area is surrounded by smelly dairy farms, deep in cow manure and mud, the grass overgrazed down to the bare dirt. Not exactly appetizing. The smell permeates everything. As the Bovine Bakery didn't really call out to us, we headed over to the Brickmaiden bakery, hoping to purchase a loaf of fresh whole grain bread. It was about 11 am. After waiting in a long line that stretched out into the street--in the rain!-- we finally were able to place our order. No bread, no pastries--well, they were "out" of virtually everything. Except an incredibly dry and boring muffin. We ordered two muffins and coffee, then proceeded to wait another 10-15 minutes--in the rain. At last they handed us our coffee and muffins. As I said it was incredibly dull and so dry, it couldn't possibly have been fresh. It mostly crumbled apart as we attempted to eat it. The coffee was good, however, but not worth the rest of it. What a terrible experience. I'll be honest--Point Reyes Station is just a gross place now. They still have a good bookstore but it's not worth driving in there for that. I buy their sticky buns, epi's, bear claws and whole wheat sourdough breads at the farmer market in San Rafael every Sunday. The bear claws are made with perfectly flaky pastry and the filling is a balanced mixture of almond paste and poppy seeds, I like that they are not overly sweet, just the right mix of ingredients. The sticky buns are soft, crispy and sticky sweet. The bread has a wonderfully hard crust with a moist inside and lasts all week at our house for sandwiches or toast in the morning. read more

We had some great bread provided at lunch at Osteria Stellina, huge loaves you see sitting in baskets hanging on the wall. On the way back from Point Reyes, we stopped at Good Earth market, and bought some Brick Maiden levain. After tasting the bread, and a bit of yelp research, I realized that it was the same bread from lunch! The crust is nice and the bread crumb stays fresh for a couple of days. read more

20 years ago, ACME breads turned me into a bread snob, and it takes alot to make me swoon anymore, but swoon I did when I first tasted Brick Maiden's amazing bread at Berkeley's Tuesday Farmers Market at Adeline near Ashy BART. I plan on making my way through their entire inventory, but so far I can vouch for the whole wheat and white loafs, the scones (so tender!) and the triple chocolate cookies (I need to forget about those - they could become a problem).
