Everything sounded good, but I ended up going with the Pork Belly Yakisoba. This dish was packed with flavor. The noodles had that smoky, slightly charred taste, and they were coated in just enough sauce to make every bite rich. The sauce brought a nice balance of savory, a little sweetness, and plenty of umami that soaked into the noodles. The pork belly was easily the best part. It was incredibly tender and juicy, with just enough fat that it practically melted in your mouth. Every piece had those caramelized edges that added even more flavor. Then you get the crunch from the cabbage and bean sprouts, the freshness from the scallions, and the little nutty flavor from the sesame that tied everything together. I guess that came with a cost: 3% service charge automatically applied, and the server proactively brought over a digital payment system, so the 18% tip I selected calculated off the total leading to what was essentially a tip of 23%.

Next came the garlic rice with whole roasted cloves of garlic, sauteed mushrooms, everything wings, and chili cauliflower. The rice was super fluffy and garlicky, but the miso butter mushrooms are not to be missed! We definitely drank a little bit of the sauce. The wings could have been a little crispier, but I really liked the sweet and spicy Korean style sauce. The crispy chili cauliflower was sweet and actually tasted a bit like orange chicken- we demolished it and this may have been my favorite dish of the whole night! Finally, we had the mentaiko kimchi udon, steak kalbi, and ordered one of their burgers on the side because why not. We agreed that the bonito flakes on the udon covered up the kimchi flavor a bit and wished it was stronger, but I liked the creaminess of the sauce. The steak kalbi had a great flavor and sauce, but I do think it could've been more tender. The burger was as good as it looked and indeed one of the best I've had in Chicago. I loved the balance between sweet and savory, and all of the flavors were balanced very well. We ended the meal with the seasonal dessert, which was sticky rice with strawberries and fermented rice. I thought it made for a refreshing end, but we agreed that it would've been even better served cold rather than hot. Overall, this was a very fun and great experience with delicious food! Brightwok is my absolute favorite place to get lunch in the city. When I was working downtown, I used to get lunch from Brightwok multiple times per week, and I was never disappointed a single time. The ingredients are so fresh, the sauces are all delicious, and you can mix and match so many ways. I honestly felt like I was eating at a different restaurant every time I went, and each time it was better than the last. My go-to is a BYO bowl with rice noodles, tofu, and Adams St. Teriyaki with broccoli, carrots, edamame, and kale. And adding a Sweet Potato Fritter is NECESSARY! I cannot recommend Brightwok enough, and I got all of my former co-workers hooked on it as well. Satisfied customer for life! read more

Such good food, great gluten-free (my sister is severely allergic to gluten and safely ate here), vegan, vegetarian, and halal options, and they are doing a great job at keeping everyone safe with their social distancing procedures. Brightwork has great healthy options (you can request your food to be steamed and cooked without oil), everything is super customizable, and they are so invested in supporting the community by donating to school events! Every time I have come here they have been so nice and the food is always delicious. They are very sustainable and have compostable containers as well. read more

I walked a considerable distance to get to this place today, only to walk in and get blasted by music at a volume worthy of a singles bar. As I always do in such cases, I turned around immediately and walked out. So, Brightwok, are you a restaurant or are you a night club? Remember, one person's great music is another person's auditory garbage, which was my impression of the music to which I was "treated". I've been going to Brightwok in River North since its opening. I can always count on the food being fresh and delicious. They have a terrific and friendly staff too! I'm consistently referring family and friends to the restaurant! Even with all of the COVID restrictions in place, I have been extremely impressed with how they have been able to adapt, almost seemingly to this "new normal". The portion was generous, but the flavor wasn't really my favorite. It leaned sweeter than expected and had a slightly ketchupy taste that threw me off a bit. I also ordered it at the hot spice level, but it barely had any heat, so I ended up adding chili powder myself. Overall, it's a convenient spot for larger groups and a casual meal, but the Pad Thai didn't quite hit the mark for me.
