We recently visited with a large group for a lovely meal at Broadway in Laguna. Our fixed menu has limited options, but everything was delicious and the service was attentive. It is a small and lively restaurant that was full. We started with a kale salad was large and flavorful with a fresh citrus dressing and delicate accents on the greens. The branzino (sea bass) was presented beautifully with a delicious truffle sauce. Deboned perfectly but with a crispy skin left on, it did not disappoint. The desserts were masterpieces in both flavor and appearance. The Oh Beehive was primarily a graham cracker base with a cheesecake-like lemon mousse covered with toasted meringue. The honey ice cream scoop on the side was divine. And the Brown Butter Rum Cake was moist and sweet. The coconut and ash ice cream paired well. A special meal that we'll remember fondly. read more

A friend highly recommended Broadway by Amar Santana, so we chose it to celebrate two birthdays, and it turned out to be a wonderful evening. The only minor hiccup happened at the beginning. I had called ahead requesting one of the window tables for our birthday celebration because I knew the restaurant has a long, narrow layout where many tables face the wall. Unfortunately, when we arrived there was some miscommunication about the reservation. After speaking with manager Michael, he was gracious enough to work with us and found a solution. I really appreciated that he listened instead of simply saying no. Once that was resolved, everything else was fantastic. Our server Sergio was excellent--professional, friendly, attentive, and paced the meal perfectly. The food was the highlight. We ordered several appetizers to share, including the Hamachi Sashimi, Beef Carpaccio, Roasted Heirloom Beet Salad, Spanish Octopus, and Halibut Ceviche. Every single one was beautifully plated and packed with flavor. None of the dishes missed. For our entrées, we had the Garganelli and the Cavatelli pastas, both outstanding with rich flavors. They were slightly salty, but exactly how I enjoy them. We also ordered the pork chop, which everyone else at the table absolutely loved. The restaurant surprised us with complimentary birthday ice cream, and we also ordered two desserts. The ice cream deserves special mention--it was unbelievably creamy and flavorful, honestly one of the best restaurant ice creams I've ever had. It vanished before I even managed to snap a photo. A couple of things to know before you go: * Parking is difficult, but that's simply Laguna Beach. * Corkage is on the expensive side: $40 for the first bottle and $50 for the second ($10 more for each additional bottle). Overall, Broadway impressed us with creative, beautifully executed food, warm hospitality, and attentive service. My aunt had wanted to go here for a long time so we went for her birthday last Wednesday. We were an early reservation at 530 and set at the chefs table watching the kitchen. That was such a great decision. We got to watch all the food prepared! I was in love with pretty much everything. The mushrooms weren't my style and the focaccia was crispier than I had expected, but my aunt loved them. Everything else was just divine. The service was amazing. Such genuinely nice people. I ordered the Couchette (I think) vodka drink and that was awesome. Amazing hamachi appetizer and the fried cheese with marinara was omg good. I loved my steak and the desserts were epic. Been meaning to try this place for a year and finally got the chance to try it. Service staff is attentive and we were seated as soon as we walked through the door. Parking is a hit or miss but it's Laguna so it's to be expected. We loved every item we ordered and we pretty much ordered half the menu because we were having a fat day. The only thing we were meh on was the hamachi crudo because the hamachi was overpowered by sauce. I rarely come out to Laguna as the roads and parking are difficult for me but I would come back and try the other half of the menu. This was a long awaited opportunity for us to dine at Chef Amar's Broadway. It was our anniversary week amd decided to have a staycation in Laguna Beach. I made reservations just to guarantee seating for us. There were tables available but we decided to sit at the bar for the view of the kitchen. We love to be entertained. First course: Bittergreen salad - white balsamic vinaigrette, umami shallot, crispy parmesan, pine nuts. Amazing flavors and the amount of vitamins like A, C, K, and antioxidants make it even more rewarding. Another first course: japanese hamachi sashimi - avocado sorbet, citrus sesame dressing, cilantro, wasabi tobiko (fish roe). Had to order this. Hamachi is one of go-to sashimi. So fresh and a beautiful way to open up your palate. Second course: slow braised beef cheek mole - they got me at mole. Corn cherry, crispy beef tendon (reminds me of a cross between chicharron and a vietnamese fried shrimp chip) The mole was delicious and so complex. This is one dish I will never be able to replicate. Just amazing. And a side of sauteed broccolini - we must have our veggies and it really complemented the main dish. Order a side of grilled bread to scarpetta - an Italian tradition of using bread to mop up the sauce on the plate. You'll thank me later :) Wine pairing: Booker, cabernet sauvignon, 2022 for him, and for her the Jax, cabernet blend, 2022. Dessert: Oh Beehive - lemon goat cheese mousse, honeycomb, elderflower, honey ice cream. FYI, goat cheese is easier to digest and it contains probiotics! So we just love a healthy dessert. Had our company Christmas dinner at Broadway. Overall, it was a great time and service was great. Really liked the 3D artwork and interior of the restaurant as well as the vibes and energy. We were there on a Wednesday night and it was packed. Food items were all pretty solid. I can't say I was impressed with the Caesar salad. But the skirt steak was really good, although a little colder than what I was expecting. The brussels sprouts were probably one of the best I've ever had and the broccolini was good as well. Fantastic burgundy wine to complement the dishes as well as the Lucette cocktail, which was really smooth and flavorful. This restaurant exceeded our expectations! AMBIANCE: 4/5 It was a modern nice casual ambiance with a bar setup and some tables. We sat at the bar which added to our experience as we got to see the chefs prepare the food right before our eyes. SERVICE: I almost forgot who our original server was as everyone worked great as a team and would be very attentive to water refills and clearing plates etc. It seems like they're all one bit family here and customers really feel like they are a part of the experience as well! FOOD: We were eyeing the truffle fries and the chef gave us a basket since he made too much for another order! The skirt steak was amazing and the sauce complimented the steak well! We came here to celebrate our friend's birthday, it was his recommendation as he has been here and probably will come here once a month or twice a year depending on his mood. I don't know but to be honest, I was very excited to come here because they have been talking about it because it is a restaurant of a celebrity chef etc... I think by having that, First the price were way too high for some of the dishes that they have in the menu including what's in the pictures below. Second the food wasn't nearly as good as going to nick's. I think where they went wrong is they are trying really hard to create new things that the flavors really does not work for these dishes. We started with the pork belly which was okay but because of the sauce all over it, it made it not crispy and soggy. Next the Raviolo which was completely out of the expected taste because of the smothered sauce that they put in there so mainly in this dish you are tasting the sauce instead of the actual food which is balsamic. We had the Hamachi sashimi only because on how " amazing they are " base on the waitress and the " other people " that goes there.. it was terrible! It was swimming into a sour Lemon sauce " as seen in the photo " and the fish itself was so hard to cut and I think we got a bad cut and it was mushy and I believe we got the tough sinew. Then here comes the Octopus which was a no,no it was almost burn. Then the crispy duck for some reason I feel like it just popped out of the toaster oven where the other part is burn and the other part is fine... again saucy does not combine well together. Worse part was the paella " i.e vegetarian wild mushrooms etc " it arrived super dry, looks like burn and taste like burn it was cold and last but not least the skirt steak!!! It was cook into perfection the only complain that I will have is the saucy!!!!!!!! We ended up not getting any dessert there is a saying three strike and you're out I think after ordering 3 in a row and none has been really good we still gave them chances after chances and it just does not work! Wow. It's been years since I last dined here but just went again recently with two other couples and we all loved the food. We can all eat so ordered almost everything on the menu, including: Tomato and burrata salad Melon and beet salad Sashimi Octopus Bone marrow Pork belly Raviolo Chilean sea bass (this was a special) Skirt streak Squid ink pasta French fries Brussels sprouts Panna cotta Dubai chocolate dessert Banana tart This may seem like a lot of food but it turned out to be just right for six people. The portion sizes are pretty small so most dishes afforded each person just a taste. There really wasn't anything we didn't enjoy! But if I had to choose standouts they would be the tomato burrata salad, pork belly, raviolo, sea bass, skirt steak, French fries and Brussels sprouts. I'm sorry I forgot the name of our server but she was FANTASTIC! She was really patient with our indecisiveness in the beginning and just on top of everything we ordered and came back frequently to ask about our drinks. The bussers were all really efficient too. Really good service. It's a small space inside but a really happening vibe and crowd. You can go dressy for a date night or dress down and be super casual and both would work. I thought there was valet and there is not. But there is a business lot right next to the restaurant (to the left, not the right) that is just for the restaurant after 5pm and it is free. I would give this restaurant a 3.5 We were excited to try this place because of all the wonderful reviews and also from my experience at vaca which was great! I feel bad rating it a 3.5 especially when there are so many 5 star reviews. So the positive was the service. Our waitress was attentive and polite. As far as food goes, our steak came to us room temperature and almost cold which is the main reason for my rating. They warmed the steak for us, but with a high rated restaurant like broadway, I just wasn't expecting to be served a cold steak. The fries were really tasty though. read more

"I think that was Amar Santana!," I said to my husband as we were walking out after a memorable meal. Now, I did not know who Amar Santana was before walking in, but I do now. And so should you. Destination-worthy cocktails. Seriously. We got the "Apricot Fizz" and the "My Love." I think the secret to a sublime cocktail is balance and these were Perfect. Fragrant, yummy and visually appealing. Would go back JUST to try all the others! Food: We started with the Beet Salad (my favorite dish of the evening) and the Sundried Tomato Focaccia. The beets were jewel-like, perfect texture, and atop of the luscious crema. The focaccia brought back the "Sundried Tomato" craze of the '80s in the best way. For mains we had the Moroccan Lamb Shank with Couscous and the Farro and Wild Mushroom Paella. My husband said the lamb was "fall off the bone" delicious, with a deep, dark depth. I loved the Paella. Farro was a nice change, it was perfectly cooked with the right "tooth" and layered with flavor. I especially enjoyed the pickled red onion on top. Yum! If I could suggest the tiniest "tweak," I think an acid component (citrus, vinegar etc), and a shower of fresh herbs would take this dish to the next level. I think more "pickly" red onions would do the trick too. Even so, that's just MY taste and does not take away from the dish at all. It was lusciously good! In addition to the cocktails, we had the Cab Blend to accompany our entrees. Nice pours by the sommelier who also made sure we were done with our glasses before whisking them away. We were too full for dessert but we do want to try the Beehive next time. Service: Exceptional. Our server, a young lady, was attentive, knew the menu, and checked in on us throughout the meal. Water glasses were refilled immediately. The best service is subtle in the best way and Broadway has this down pat. It takes a lot for me to leave a negative review for a restaurant but nothing pisses me off more than paying a lot of money for inedible food. First we started with the Focaccia that was both surprisingly dry and doughy at the same time and completely void of any flavor. Then we had the octopus which had some interesting flavors but was so chewy and the texture was so off putting that it made my stomach turn. The pork belly was soggy and the portion was laughable for the price. For our main we had the Beef Cheek Mole which was so fatty and tough that it made it impossible to eat. While I appreciate the ambiance and aesthetic of what appeared to be well executed plated dishes, the food was extremely unpleasant. Not only was I disappointed but was shocked that a restaurant of this caliber could put out food that was so blatantly disgusting. read more

Cannot say enough great things about our experience here. My husband and I went last weekend as part of our weekend away to celebrate our anniversary; we're big Top Chef fans, so getting to try out Amar's restaurant was a no brainer. We sat at the chef's counter which I would highly recommend, though you might get a little warm just from the heat from the kitchen. Everything was amazing from start to finish; cocktails were on point, everything we ate was beyond delicious, and we had the most thoughtful server, Janice, who had great recommendations and knowledge of the menu. The octopus was mushy, both proteins were drenched in sauce, the pork chop was thin and just full of fat and the edamame was nothing special. I can't tell you how disappointed we were because we thought we would be getting at least good food - maybe even great. The NY steak was cooked well, but we couldn't taste it because it was just covered in sauce . Why would the chef do that? Our used plates and utensils were promptly cleared and with a smile. I don't remember ever having a bourbon Manhattan so good. My wife and I shared an appetizer. Give my regards to Broadway by Amar Santana. This gem is tucked away just a couple blocks from the beach, and delivers trendy, hip vibes with top notch service and food that wows. While the price tag is on the higher end, it is comparable to most of the nicer dines in the area. Starting with the popular Free Range Organic Egg Yolk Raviolo, a large single Raviolo sits simmered in buttery goodness with crispy sage and toasted hazelnuts. When you break into the Raviolo, you get a rich ooze of yolk mixed in with ricotta. This decadent dish is topped off with a sliced duck prosciutto, which adds a nice meaty bite. For bone marrow lovers, the Roasted Beef Bone Marrow is otherworldly. With a thin crisp crust on top, the marrow offers a build-your-own-flavor experience with charred sourdough and an option of garlic confit, oxtail mushroom marmalade, and sea salt. It was hard to decide which combination was best, but as a purist, I was surprised by how much I kept going back to the garlic and oxtail. This gave the rich, umami explosiveness you hope for in a bone marrow dish. Another outstanding dish was the Grilled Smoked Pork Chop. With a perfect ratio of fat to meat, the pork chop was so tender that the pieces with fat almost melted in your mouth while the meatier pieces easily gave to each bite. The sauce, farro, and mushrooms were all great supporting stars, but the white bean purée had the thick creamy goodness that really complimented the pork chop. But the best dish of the night was the fan favorite - the Grilled Marinated Prime Skirt Steak. The meat was a perfect medium rare, easily cut with a knife. Each bite was marinated in beautiful, savory caramelized onion jus that you almost wouldn't care about anything else on the dish. But don't forget to try the chimichurri, which was a creamy green delightful accompaniment. For dessert, the Brown Butter Banana Tart was recommended to us by the server and chefs. With thick saucy miso caramel, browned bananas, luxuriously creamy vanilla bean ice cream, nutty pecan crumble, and a cinnamon rich, buttery crust - I'll be dreaming about those bites for a while. On a minor note, I would order dessert in advance if possible as some items can take a bit longer to come out. To top things off, non culinary highlights include: If you're sitting at Chef's Table (bar seating), you have very comfortable bar seats, a hook for your bags under the table, but most importantly, a fantastic view of the chefs cooking your dinner. In our case, Chef Sergio and his cooking mates were incredibly hospitable, guiding us with menu selection while casually wiping off oil burns. The chefs made our dinner even more memorable. Our server Eddie, was patient, attentive, and a fantastic guide of the menu as well. He paced the night well for us and had a calm, kind energy while being very knowledgeable about the menu. Finally, at every turn, our waters were being refilled, dirty plates and utensils removed, and trash being wiped off without requiring request. Kudos to the entire wait staff. Where to start with this place?! First and foremost, the service was incredible. Janice gave us a tour of the menu that had me feeling as if i wrote it myself, so knowledgeable. Started with the egg yolk raviolo which almost made me orgasm in the middle of the restaurant. Hot start. Then moved onto the duck confit which was cooked perfectly. Tender inside and crispy skin. Made me wanna call my mother and tell her i love her. Next we had the bone marrow which was so perfectly paired with the garlic and oxtail marmalade that it made me question my own existence. I've dined at Broadway five times, and my last two visits have been truly disappointing. As a sommelier at another restaurant in the area, I was especially surprised by how pathetic the service was tonight. My father and I sat at the bar for a quick appetizer. He ordered a drink, and we placed an order for the ravioli. I chose not to drink here as we were planning to go to another bar afterward. When the bartender noticed I wasn't ordering a drink, she asked to see my ID if we wanted to remain seated at the bar. I provided my ID, and we were allowed to stay. About 10 minutes later, she returned and asked, "What did you guys order to eat again?" After we received our dish, we decided to leave. Let's start with food: Food was great! Personally the hamachi had amazing flavors to the point we just kept tasting the sauce. Me and my wife loved it! We also love bread, so we got the focaccia. However, it's not what you're thinking of, it has a crust on the outside with a soft inside. We both weren't a fan of it but still ate it because we purchased something that was curated by the chefs. Main entrees were great. Perfect medium rare for both of our cuts, it was a little heavy on the sauce but nonetheless it had good texture. Service: they were amazing. Loved from when we first came in to out. They checked in and made sure our water was filled without overdoing it. Wine was great as well! Ambiance: it is a bit crowded and we were seated fairly close to another couple and another large group. Wish it was spaced out a bit better but food made up for it. We had a great experience here! Our waitress was outstanding and had a really positive impact on our experience. First off, the restaurant is very chic and has some art on the walls, which we thought might have been made of recycled plastic. There seemed to be plenty of seating. The drinks were all super unique. I had a cocktail with a plum wine which was flavored like strawberry shortcake and it was one of the best cocktails I've ever had. I was really impressed! We also had the focaccia bread which was so delicious. It came out warm and we ordered it on the suggestion of our waitress, so we were grateful for that. We used the bread to soak up the sauce from the raviolo, which was so unique and had a nice sage flavor. The raviolo also had toasted nuts which added a nice crunch and prosciutto which was delicious and savory. The combination of flavors in the raviolo was fantastic and worked so well together! I had a pasta dish which was similar to gnocchi but was called gnudi. It was pretty good, but didn't knock my socks off. I expected more, it was kind of like any other noodle dish and the noodles were just okay, and I kind of expected them to be more of a pillowy texture, but they were not. The sauce was also okay but I felt like it was missing something. My dad was also not really impressed by the steak dish he had ordered, which seemed quite small and like they were stingy with the veggies (there were like, 2 halves of fingerling potatoes and 3 shishito peppers). My fiancé got the mole which was good but lacking spice, and needed something more. We liked the dessert, but again, did not blow us away and was not memorable to me from the experience. Finally checked this place off my list and it was well worth the wait. We tried several dishes and shared family style, and all of it was delicious. Service was great even though they were busy. My only negative feedback was that the music is a little too loud which makes everyone talk louder so overall it's very loud, and upbeat. read more

Had an amazing experience at Amar's restaurant! Had reservations and were seated right away at the chefs table overseeing the kitchen, which was such a cool experience. Ordered the bone marrow to start. Then skirt steak and halibut as entrees with fries and brussel sprouts as sides. Then had the panna cotta for dessert. Cocktails were also on point. The food was incredible, I ate more than anticipated but I just couldn't stop. The service was great, even when they were busy our server made sure my wine stayed full :) The chef was engaging even tho he was slammed he made time to have small talk. The ambiance is nice, I like the openness and the art in the walls, it has an industrial feel even though it's in the heart of Laguna beach. I will definitely be back. read more

Top chef watcher so I had to come !!! Drove 50 minutes and didn't disappoint. We had he's famous lamb shack and I got the steak skirt. Sauce was on point and lamb was tender as it can be. Was excited to recently check out Broadway by Amar Santana, being a big fan of Amar from watching him on Top Chef (especially his most recent run on the all-stars season). Everything about the meal was excellent! We started with the Egg Yolk Raviolo (with ricotta, duck prosciutto, hazelnut, and aged balsamic). I was initially concerned it might be too heavy to kick off the meal, but the flavors were indulgent yet beautifully balanced -- an absolute delight. For mains, we had the Herb Roasted Branzino and the Grilled Marinated Prime Skirt Steak (prepared medium rare). The branzino was delicious, paired beautifully with a cauliflower purée (which was so good, I could have eaten a whole bowl of it by itself!) As for the skirt steak, my fave of the night. It can be a tricky cut to get right since it can easily end up chewy, but this was perfect: tender, flavorful, and beautifully complemented by the shishito peppers, chimichurri, and caramelized onion jus. The waiter mentioned the kitchen makes this dish so much that they get it perfect everytime, so for anyone ever dining here, you can't go wrong ordering this dish! Every dish came with its own absolutely delicious sauce or jus. Thankfully, our server recommended a side of bread, and I'm so glad they did because I used it to soak up every last bit of the sauces. The ambiance was another highlight -- cozy and inviting, perfect for an evening night out. Not too stuffy, but still with an elevated feel. Amar was unfortunately not in the kitchen the night we went, but for the nights he is, you can easily see him in the open kitchen, as it is highly visible from any part of the restaurant. The cocktails were fantastic as well. They're featuring a holiday menu right now, and the spiked cider was boozy, festive, and delicious. What a memorable meal.
