Visited Plant Based Coney Island to catch up with a friend and I am not disappointed!! Walking in, it looks like a bar but it's a Coney Island. It was very clean and neat inside! There is seating inside and outside; I was extra stoked to be able to sit outside today! The guy taking my order was very nice and kind. Especially because I had a little bit of a slow moment and quickly forgot that it was a plant based Coney Island. Very untraditional LOL I ordered a Coney with a side of chips. The Coney comes with chili, mustard, and onions with sea salt chips. The Coney dog was so good. You honestly cannot tell that it is plant based. This place is nice! Made me nostalgic for Cafe Ollie -- it's such an inviting space. We'll have to bring our vegan fam here for a bit of "Detroit" cuisine when they're back to visit. I wasn't a huge fan of the hibiscus lemonade. It was overly sweet with zero tartness, and I'd expect both from lemons and hibiscus. The chili cheese dog was fine. I think the chili is quite good but the cheese kind of dampened the flavor down. I recommend it with mustard. My favorite was the bacon jalapeno dog, while my partner preferred the coney. I think the hotdogs themselves have good flavor and are more similar in texture to a meat dog than any other imitation I've tried. I'd be willing to try more, but it's not a priority. I know it's all vegan but I will say I thought it was kind of expensive for what you get. But that's the economy we're living in, I guess! read more

For full disclosure my review is coming from someone who does eat meat but i always support my vegetarian husbands journey. He recently moved to Michigan and i was so happy to find this plant based way for him to try our coney dogs!! I have to say to was pretty close to what i remember a pork hot dog consistency, and taste being. The mac and cheese was a standout as it is the closest non dairy version I've ever eaten at a restaurant! The other standout is the pops on tap!! I ended up having the orange cream soda and it was very good!! The staff were welcoming and kind. In town for a wedding and saw this vegan eatery. Great options. Hot dogs and burgers. We (5) all got different sandwiches and the Mac and cheese. I love real cheese and mac and cheese. Their vegan version was delicious. You order at the front and take a number. Very nice staff. The restaurant has a large l, sunny area in the back. Out door seating too, but no shade so sat inside. Everything at Plant Based Coneys is vegan and all of it is delicious, delicious comfort food. Great location, too, in Depot Town with plenty of nearby parking. This is exactly the kind of local business we could all benefit from. But more importantly, the food is so good, you are missing out if you aren't already eating here. My god I didn't wanna leave and I wanted to try all the things on the menu. Here's the thing: I didn't have my first hot dog til I went vegetarian but living in Michigan - coneys are like a rite of passage. Having a place that makes coneys for vegans and vegetarians is the best thing!! AND THESE WERE DELICIOUS. So tasty, not too heavy and the perfect amount of onions and mustard. Their fries and tots are air fried which is so crispy and perfect. My friend got the garlic aioli and I'm mad I didn't get some for myself! Don't forget to get the strawberry lemonade! So refreshing. I came here for the Ypsi tasty event. We were all impressed! Even the most die- hard meat eaters in my group had to admit that the food was fantastic. I don't typically try new restaurants on their first day, but I was so excited for Plant Based Coneys I made an exception. For only being open a few hours it seemed like they were handling orders really well, food came out pretty quickly and everything was delicious! The coneys were excellent, the tots were not greasy at all (I believe they are air-fried) and the root beer float was perfect for a 90° day! To start off, the service here is wonderful. They have a great staff and awesome products! My husband who usually doesn't like plant-based products came with me and we decided to sample it all! The coney's were incredible and the Mac n cheese was to die for! YUMMY! I also loved the tater tots and the fact they are air fried is great. Plant Based Coneys (in Ypsilanti) is about 10 miles away from my home, and there are tons of restaurants between the west side of Ann Arbor and Depot Town. Many costing 2 or 3 times as much. However, I could not have had a better and healthier dinner than the absolutely delicious vegetarian and gluten free dinner I had. The restaurant is 3 months old and I believe that the number of people eating there will grow exponentially as word gets around - I think that EMU students will find it to be a great addition to reasonably priced and delicious choices in Ypsilanti, even if they are not vegetarians and don't usually look for gluten free restaurants. In short, Plant Based Coney's is a hidden gem in Ypsilanti's Depot Town. Plus, I didn't see any take home plastic containers; instead the take home containers are compostable! Purchased a large catering order for a family Christmas gathering: 2 trays of mac & cheese, 24 coney dogs, a quart of chili, a quart of "chicken" noodle soup and 6 grilled cheese sandwiches. The order was ready on time for pickup, everything was well packaged, hot and tasted great. The two staff members were very friendly and helped us carry everything to our car. It's really nice to have a vegan option. Prices are reasonable. Highly recommend this restaurant for dining in or carryout, as well as catering. read more

After losing CMO in Detroit I wondered if I'd ever get another classic coney dog that made me smile and after taking my family to Plant Based Coneys I can say with authority that my cheeks hurt from the smile on my face! Super friendly family run business that nailed coney chili and found a winner with impossible dogs for the base. All five of us left happy, we had chikn sandwiches, coneys, fries, tots, chickn noodle soup (homemade and tastes like it!), Mac and chz, floats, brownies and bottled sodas and every single thing was delicious and no animals were harmed in the making of this winner! I've been there a few times, and the food is good. Nice to have a plant based option. The service on the other hand has been poor. Takes forever to get your food, even if they aren't busy. If it is busy, good luck. I went in recently and there were maybe five other customers in the whole place. The staff was so overwhelmed that I couldn't get anyone to take my order, so I walked out. I drove 10 miles to get there. I really wanted a cony dog. I'm sure they mean well, but I'm not sure I'll go back. Unreliable. We love this new place. The coney chili is awesome and their cheese/cheese sauce is one of the best I've had. The chili cheese fries just hit a spot as do the coney dogs. My favorite thing is the Mac and cheese though its creamy and doesn't have any odd flavors the bread crumb top has good seasoning its just awesome. Then their brownies are really really good. We haven't tried the ice cream or floats yet but that's for another trip. read more

Owner I met, Mel, was really nice! Food was also really really good. So far I've tried the chicken sandwich, Mac and cheese, chili, and obviously the coney dog! Everything was so so tasty and flavorful with great textures. I usually don't like a lot of onion on things and both the coney and chicken sandwich had a healthy portion on onions but it all fit just right taste wise! Layout inside is really cute as well this would be a very cute lunch date! They also have gluten free options if you're looking for that. My only complaint is that i didn't have enough money to try the whole menu! Anticipation of them opening was definitely worth it! Stepped in to a nice mellow space, saw two folks waiting for orders and one person studying the menu. I asked for a coney dog with chili, onions and cheese and while waiting enjoyed the bar seating overlooking Cross Street. I used the clean and neat bathroom then explored the seating throughout the inside and saw nice outside seating with parking out back. The place is decorated clean and colorful. My drink was a bubbly rhubarb lavender water in a bottle which I prefer over a can. The coney was delicious. $10.07 well spent. Next time I'm trying fries with it. read more
