Who knew that take out broth would be such a big hit? Marco Canora, and thereby Brodo, did! I had heard about this place opening recently and wanted to see what all this broth-rage was about. A tiny window opening on the side of 12th street and 1st ave is Brodo. Just a take out window (minus the drive through) for rich, flavorful broths served both hot and cold. The cold versions are served in large glass jars (which require a $2 deposit) and ready for you to schlep home for use whenever you wish. The hot versions are served in your choice of size - small (8 oz) medium (12 oz) or large (16 oz) - and range from $4 to $9. You also have the option to add in some delectable ingredients - such as fermented beet juice or grass fed bone marrow. In addition to their basic broths, Brodo offers 2 homemade soups - the chickarina (complete with chicken meatballs and escarole) and the ribolitta (a tuscan veggie soup with cannellini beans, parmesean, kale and bread). Soups are served in just 2 sizes - small (10 oz) for $7 or large (16 oz) for $8.50. This was my first time sampling the broths, so I wanted to try them plain. I had 4oz of each the "hearth" and "gingered grass fed beef". The hearth broth is made of chicken, turkey and beef and is more complex in flavor that you might think. I sipped it while walking in the frigid cold over to Union Square and it was like an easy, user-friendly version of having soup to go since it is served in a coffee-style cup. The beef broth was tremendous. The gingered element came through and elevated this broth to the next level. Definitely my favorite. Next time I come back, because I will certainly be back, I will go out on a limb and add the bone marrow. I am sure that combination will be over the top delicious and rich, I can't wait. I highly recommend swinging by here and grabbing a sample. Though initially when I heard about the "broth to go" concept, I cocked my head to the side and thought "huh?", I totally get it now that I've tried it. I suggest going on a brisk day, which there are plenty of right now, as the warming sensation the broths generate may be lost on us in the warmer months. Iced broth? Happened to walk by on a really cold and windy day and was excited to try it. There were only 2 people in front of us but since they seem to help only one person at a time and we ended up waiting a while because one very large order. We tried the gingered beef broth and while pretty tasty, did not think it was worth the $5.something for 8oz. At first you think this is the dumbest most absurd food concept, not to mention paying $10 for a medium cup of soup base? Well clearly when the owners of Brodo came up with the idea, I would be their target market. I feel as if I dreamed it into reality one night. I have been "brothing" since way before it was an actual thing. Those that like brothing actually love it. It's healthy, hearty and comforting. Brodo was the only thing I loved about living in the city. Some people like drinking coffee on a cold day as they walk down the street, I'd much rather walk around in the cold with the hot cup of meaty broth. My favorite is the Hearth. It's the best of both worlds. I don't bother with mix ins anymore. It takes away from delicate richness of slo roasted stewed bones. The brilliance of Brodo is the creators own the restaurant next door and found a way to use the scraps and waste from the kitchen. So it's environmentally friendly. I miss living down the street from this location. This would only be a viable business in NY where you have walk up traffic. Holding this Broth in your hands seems to tune out the car alarms, construction and other Nyc hustle n bustle that goes on everywhere here. read more

I'm currently battling a cold in its beginning stages, so I have to be extremely vigilant in squashing the bug when I can by using all the weaponry in my arsenal before it becomes a full-blown sinus infection. This means a shit ton of water, sleep, Ricola cough drops, tea, and hot soup. Enter Brodo. I got off the subway with an achy throat (I mean, are you surprised? MTA is a literal breeding ground for viruses as well as an incubus of viral plague) and needed some self-care before I went to brunch. Brodo fit the bill. It's a tiny shack that packs a punch. I was going to get the beef bone broth, but the guy recommended the Hearth one, which has the savory goodness of chicken, turkey and beef bones. He gave me a small cupful to sample it, and I immediately got the 16 oz. one which will you set you back $11 but it's worth every little sip. Seriously. Was reading about the health benefits of bone broth and I had a cold..so I paid the steep price for this little cup of broth and carried it around like one of those annoying Yuppies clutching an overpriced coffee cup on her walk, trying to savor every sip - since the portion was so darn small...perhaps one dollar a sip. I was just there (1/18/17 5:30ish pm), first time. Ordered the "Gilligan" (hearth broth, coconut milk, ginger) and the girl behind the counter asked me to repeat it twice, as if she had no idea what is on the menu. I ordered a Small cup; it was $8.71. I handed her $20.75. I got back $11.29. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this until 5 blocks away (in a hurry!). Guess it's your tip, girl...or pay attention. When I took the first sip, I wondered where the taste of coconut and ginger went. I opened up the cup and it looked like regular broth to me. And it tasted like it too. Did I get jipped? Maybe. Maybe they have super subtle flavors. Today I had this notion to get bone broth because I thought it may help with my endless cold. But I don't know if I will go again without checking my change, getting a receipt, opening my cup, and tasting before I leave the counter. As I finished this cup, I opened it and saw their was the plastic lid spout (sorry, hard to describe) at the bottom of the cup.
