Shout out to Yelp for pointing us to this wonderful pub. Yes, it's a pirate themed bar but no one is dressed as a pirate or making you walk the plank if you don't order expeditiously. You do get Tiki drinks, spicy Apps, and outstanding attentive service. When we arrived we were greeted by the owner and while waiting for a table we had a brief conversation regarding the recent remodeling. We were also offered cocktails while we (briefly) waited. Be aware they are super busy and you pretty much queue up by the entrance. We ordered the brussels sprouts and buffalo cauliflower bytes. Both came with dipping sauces and both provided a wonderfully spicy kick. I also ordered a salad just to fool myself that I was eating healthily. We were able to split the salad. The portions are huge so bring your appetite and the drinks will definitely sneak up on you. I enjoyed 2 Mai Tais and was one happy guy. Burbankians, you need to support this local pub! read more

Staff is super friendly and attentive! Fast service and great food! Heads up, they don't take reservations and it's not a huge space but sitting at the bar was a positive experience. Everything we tried was delicious but I wish some of the portions were bigger. The bang bang shrimp tacos for example were great but only came with two and the green curry salmon was small as well but very tasty! In terms of flavors though, the chef definitely knows what they're doing when it comes to unique creations. I also love that they list dietary preferences/guidelines on their menu as well! I REALLY want to love this place..... I've visited Broken Compass in Burbank multiple times (8-9), both with my wife, with friends and with out-of-town clients/guests. The tiki-themed decor is absolutely delightful, and the food is consistently fantastic (kudos to the chef). The drinks are creative and well-crafted, which makes for a great time. Unfortunately, over the visits, I've noticed various and consistent customer service issues. By the reviews it looks like I am not the only one. The staff can come across as rude and the numerous restrictive policies really take away from the experience. For example, there are strict time limits on your table, deposit requirements just to sit down, strict rules about where you can sit, and heaven forbid you exit the wrong door! I get it, you need policies, but the surly manner they are conveyed at times can be very insulting. Maybe they are going for a Seinfeld "Soup Na$i" vibe, and I just don't get it? For me the "rewards program" really classes down the place too, what is this, TGI Fridays? I guess low brow people like that sort of thing, to me it is a very chain restaurant feel. I am pretty sure McDonalds has a rewards program, Nobu does not... These policies, combined with the unfriendliness, really detract from what could be a top-notch experience... on top of that they reward themselves for this customer service by starting the gratuity choices at 20% or adding gratuity in for you.... (I still believe gratuity is earned, but that's just me) The last time I visited, I brought a client who loves tiki bars, and it was quite embarrassing dealing with all the rules and the pushback from the staff. It's disappointing because the atmosphere and the food have so much potential. Credit card deposit just to sit down (hold the table)? who does that!! Not even Castaway... As a business owner in Burbank myself, I understand the need to minimize losses, but this policy is just rude and asinine... all restaurants deal with problem customers and walk outs, "bad apples, blah blah", but the solution is not establishing a "table deposit"... no other restaurants do this... if you are experiencing excessive walk outs, you need to train you staff, not punish customers. In summary, Broken Compass is a fun spot with great food and drinks, but the customer experience needs a lot of improvement. This place has so much potential to be truly unique and bespoke... that is what I truly hope for this restaurant, but at this point it has classed itself down to a cliche' mass produced chain establishment like Chili's or TGIF... but I still want to love it. read more

Met a friend for drinks, I always love a Tiki bar and was not familiar with this one! I ordered one of their specialty rum cocktails and then had a second one! Our bartender was fantastic and mentioned that they have a happy hour all day on Sunday - unless there is a guest bartender (not sure what that means but it sounds exciting!). The whole vibe is tiki and the details in decor are amazing. Even the bathroom is dressed up in the theme. Which is always super impressive to me. Don't leave any detail out! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE! First off... I love that there's a small entry room that prepares you to leave behind everything from the outside world to entering a whole different (tiki) world. Was looking for a place to eat and have drinks and I found this place that was close to my hotel. It didn't look like much from the outside, I thought it was something else especially since you can't see the sign from the street due to the trees blocking it. We went inside and we were pleasantly surprised at how big it was and busy. They didn't have any tables ready so we just sat at the bar which was fine for us. The ambience felt like you were close to the beach or something. We ordered a couple of specialty drinks that you would order if you were on the beach somewhere. They were really tasty and packed a punch. We ordered the potato skins appetizer which came out quick and was really cheesy and had this dipping sauce that was delicious. For our meal we ordered the smash burger and the chicken sandwich with no spice. The burger was cooked perfect, cheesy, and seasoned right. The chicken sandwich was also cooked perfect and the coleslaw was seasoned good too. The potato salad that came with the chicken sandwich needed some seasoning, very bland. The onion rings was great, cooked perfect, and nice breading on them. The prices aren't too bad. The service was great. The bartenders always came around to see if you needed anything. I went here recently with a small group and was absolutely blown away! I am a huge Tiki Bar fan and this spot delivered on decor and then-some. We came mid-afternoon during happy hour, so unfortunately missed the main menu, but were wow-d by the great pricing on the happy hour menu. Almost everything was $7 and that included the drinks. I've never had bar food that I actually enjoyed and craved more of. Highly recommend the ceasar salad and smash burger. It's great to see a bar take as much care and attention preparing their food as they do their drinks - I feel like this is unfortunately very rare. We ordered nearly the whole happy hour menu (10+ items) including drinks and walked away with a $100 bill. One star off because there were limited vegetarian items on the happy hour menu - maybe add an impossible or tofu option? Fun spot with upscale bar food. You enter through what looks like a small store, then go through a nondescript door and are transported to tiki heaven! Each cocktail comes in a different glass with interesting names. I had the Banana Hammock and hubs had a Navy Grog that came in a fish shaped glass. The special drink of the night comes in a spam can. For food, we had the Miso Deviled Eggs (yum), Roasted Brussel Sprouts (meh), and the Poke Nachos (yum yum). It's my new favorite discovery and one that I plan to visit again. On a whim, we decided to try Broken Compass Tiki because we thought the kids might enjoy the atmosphere. Honestly, I wasn't sure if kids were even allowed, but I figured we'd give it a shot. From the exterior, it does not look like much is going on. Once we made it past the first double door and walked through the second into the bar, we were aghast me mateys. Your eyeballs will feast on the creative interior design that feels like a blend of tiki bar, Pirates of the Carribean, and I Spy. Someone with talent has really thought through the decorations in a way that makes it feel fun without being too kitschy. There are pirate skeletons, Tiki masks, Hawaiian vinyls, stuffed scarlet macaws, giant octopus arms that reach across the ceiling, and more. Just sitting at the bar and soaking in the interior is a treat for the senses. And, the place was HAPPENING. At 5:30pm. On a Friday. It was like as if half of Burbank decided to happy hour at Broken Compass Tiki. After a 10 minute wait, we were fortunate enough to be seated at a table by the bar. Our waitress was attentive and the food came out surprisingly fast for a small kitchen so we didn't have any issues that other patrons may have experienced. We orderd some slushy tiki drinks that were delicious and muy fuerte. I can't imagine having more than one and attempting to get behind the wheel - drink safely my friends. The orange chicken is a tasty appetizer to accompany your drinks. The fish and chips are excellent - especially the chips. I ordered a side of fries with my burger and the fries were addictive. Located in what used to be a British Pub, walk through the two layers of doors to instantly feel transported to a classic-looking tiki bar. We were there for happy hour and you had a pretty extensive food list to choose from. Most of their appetizers were on the HH menu, but you had some full meal options, too. My husband got the rotating IPA, and I opted for a seasonal punch (fall flavors, but fruity and light). Love that my punch came in a Spam can. We ordered the 8 spice Brussels sprouts, which were crispy, tasty, and savory - and not swimming in oil. We also opted for the tater tots which were some of the crispiest tots we'd had in a very long time. Service was a little slow, but I know it's only because there was one server having to handle the whole restaurant's food orders. He was really friendly and had great recs for us first timers. Hubs and I are huge tiki buffs so when we heard this Burbank bar re-themed we had to check it out! Not only do they have great decor with a lot of seating options (booths, lounge, bar and even a kid friendly area - during kid friendly hours) but they have good grub, great service and most importantly well mixed drinks! I mean you really don't need to go any further than the cinnamon flaming Chupacabra's Vacation. Yo Ho! Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me but the Painkiller is good too and we'll, I haven't had a bad drink yet! Love the ahi nachos and the spicy chicken sammie, tater tots and oh, did I mention they have mugs and it's a perfect place to host a gathering? Replying to owner comment by Erica: both your bartender and your manager on duty told me that gluten free and non gluten free foods all go in the same fryer. They stressed it changed a few months ago and was not safe for people with Celiac and true intolerance. I'm simply repeating what your employees told me; please don't leave rude comments to people that are repeating that. If your employees are giving incorrect information,then that sounds like a training issue. However, if the fryer is shared and you are telling people it's not and someone gets sick...you could have a lawsuit on your hands potentially. I also want to note that Celiac is an ADA protected disability. Additionally, I was told the chicken sandwich was pan fried, not done in the shared fryer, hence being truly gluten free. So again...nothing in the fryer is safe if you have Celiac or a true intolerance, as it is not dedicated. Super cute spot, great drinks and great people that work there. Why three stars? Because sadly, their fryer is no longer gluten free. Super disappointed by that. They also still have all their fried stuff on the menu marked as GF, which it really shouldn't be. I felt like they dropped the ball tonight. Waited an hour for a "quick" drink. Would have stood or done whatever to get in and out with my partner. Waited an hour just to walk in and see people that "went to use the restroom" sitting at the bar. There has to be a better system. Is it first come first serve or wait your turn for an available seat at the bar? I don't plan on returning for a while or recommending the spot to anyone. read more

I love this place down to the drinks ,the food and definitely the decor. I found the pageantries of tiki places to be quite charming. I always say never go full tiki but that's exactly what they did. That being said tho, they d did not disappoint!!! The service is exceptional and the owner Frank is a lovely gentleman. He's like an encyclopedia when it comes to spirits and cocktails. The food has an overall Gastropub feel to it . The peanut butter, wings and the French onion dip are amazing. They have a great happy hour. An impressive nom nom menu with a few items on happy hour also, mainly appetizers/starters and shareables on the shores of Burbank. Top food picks include a treasure of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free items such as Greedo's All Veggie Wrap, BBQ Cauliflower, Crispy Brussel Sprouts (with 8 delicious spices), Seasoned Tots, Vegan Grilled Cheese (as well as classic), Beer Battered Onion Rings and more! Lots of burgers not to mention salads, various entrees and of course dessert! Recently here for a friends birthday festivities and being in a large group I didn't expect the service to be so above and beyond from the entire pub crew... Zack was/ andis probably one of the best servers in town and BP crew you'll have lucky enough to attend to you and/or your table. Fun lunch after arriving at the Burbank airport, which is nearby. Great setting because of the Tiki bar theme and the wonderful and perfect decor and details. Definitely a happy and relaxing vibe! The menu had many delicious offerings and we happened to go during their happy hour. My daughter ordered the Brussel sprouts and fish tots off of the happy hour menu at $5 each. Great prices. I ordered the fish tacos with tots. We loved all of the food. Great flavors and freshly made. Came out piping hot. They also have a variety of dipping sauces and seasonings to choose from to go with the items. Steve was a super server who was both kind and helpful with the menu. I took my husband here for his birthday and we met some friends. They don't take reservations and we had a big party of about 10 people. They couldn't seat us, but we lucked out and found some open seating in the lounge area near the bar. The bar staff were amazing! Super friendly and really seemed to love their job. We tried a few different tiki drinks, the poke nachos, tator tots, and the fried cookie dough balls. Everything was so good and it was a fun way to celebrate and catch up with friends. The banana hammock drink can be served in a coconut and is super yummy if you enjoy sweeter drinks. The decor was amazing and the vibe was so fun. The first time we went to the Broken Compass it was amazing. The atmosphere was unique, and the food was DELICIOUS. Unfortunately, in the year or so since then, every time we come it has gotten worse and worse. Mostly in the quality and service. Today was the breaking point, and unfortunately we won't be returning. The waiter, a blonde bored man, lumbers up to our tiny cramped table like our presence had inconvenienced him. He forced us to start a bar tab even though we were at a table. As soon as we ordered I paid and tipped him 20%, hoping he would treat us like guests if he saw the tip. Nope. He just hates his job. We ordered the buffalo cauliflower bites and the fish and chips. The cauliflower bites were raw, huge and soggy. The buffalo sauce was weak and sad. Usually this dish includes bite sized cauliflower that isn't raw. I figured the prep was just lazy, they were cut too big, and therefore couldn't be cooked through. The buffalo sauce is usually zingy and flavorful. Tasted watered down to save money. We got a side of ranch that was half full so I asked for an extra one. The fish in chips (subbed tater tots) looked great, and like they normally serve it. BUT - second bite in THERE WAS BONES IN THE FISH! Two huge bones, right on the outside. Any chef prepping this, dipping this fish would have seen it needed to be trimmed, or at least DEFINITELY not served. With a filet you can be careful, you can see the fish. When fish is breaded it immediately becomes a choking hazard to serve. Waiter blamed it on the supplier. I was thinking in my head there are many hands that fish goes through before service that SHOULD act as quality checks. It can't just be blamed on the supplier, that is also LAZY quality control by staff. The cherry on top was, after I told him about the two giant bones in the fish, our apathetic waiter still had the GAUL to charge me AN EXTRA DOLLAR for the ranch. Like, seriously, you already served me choke trap fish. Fine have your dollar, it's the last you'll get out of me. read more

We came in on a whim. But were surprised to discover such a gem!!! Thomas was super friendly, cordial and overall very welcoming. My bf and I brought in our own tiki mugs and everyone was very nice and accommodating to rinsing and getting our drinks in our mugs. Other bars don't honor your own mugs for some reason.
