Broken Compass is another great valley tiki bar, with an excellent food menu as well. It's like stepping into Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride - they are deeply committed to the seven-seas theme with a ship's mast overhead, porthole mirrors in the bathrooms, and a seagull & wave soundtrack. We ordered several tiki drinks and two sandwiches. The drinks were strong, especially the navy grog. The pirate punch with white rum and absinthe was my favourite. They were presented festively in tiki glasses with umbrellas, flowers, plastic palm tree stirrers. The sandwiches were positively stacked. The (not) hot chicken sandwich was giant, packed with slaw and pickles and a flavourful fried chicken breast. My Isle Of Club was a monster: delectable breaded pork, bacon, pineapple, sauces, plus JALAPENO POPPERS on sourdough. It was a delicious beast. When we were seated, we were informed of a 90-minute time limit on our table. We weren't expecting that, but we were fine with it - we understood that there must be a need for it, especially since the place is rather small. We also weren't jazzed about the table we got - a small table for two flanked, very cosily, by two of the same - but again, we didn't make a fuss about it. The place was obviously busy. The older, well-dressed, well-spoken couple next to us, however, wanted whoever thought up that time limit rule to walk the plank! They had been at their table for over two hours and yo ho ho, they were going to leave when they felt like it. Multiple employees reminded them of the 90-minute policy, but avast! Their asses were staying glued to those seats and they would go down with the ship if they had to. They'd been there when we were seated and they were still there when we left. If a table time limit policy would shiver your timbers too, maybe try coming early on a weeknight when it's less busy. read more

Extremely large tropical drink selection. Fish tots were awesome, Chicken Slider was spicy HOT! While the presentation and appearance of the food is not great, they did had flavor and am glad that it is simple, well cooked food that is not pretentious. Regular tots and smashburger were just ok, but still worth the price. Bathroom is very unique & immensely themed. It actually adds to the experience, which sounds odd. I went back and forth between a 3 and 4. The ambiance and vibe is cute and piratey The drinks were pretty good.... a solid 4. The food was pretty good, also a 4. We got the poke nachos, fish and chips and a burger. My 18 year old son who is autistic and eats VERY limited things wanted to order chicken strips off the kid's menu. This has NEVER been an issue but they said they have a strict rule against it. Um seriously? Oh yes, apparently the chef will get mad. Um, okaaay... can I get an adult size portion with an adult price? I'm happy to pay for it. Nope. BUT we could have my 12 yr old daughter "fake" order the chicken strips and have my 18 yr old "fake" order the fish and chips that my daughter was getting. Are you kidding me right now?!? My husband and I decided to spot by here after dinner. We had such a fun time. This place truly gives you a "Tiki" experience! Even the bathrooms have an ocean sound and feel to them. We didn't try their food there like I mentioned before, we had dinner somewhere else. I tried two of their drinks and dessert. I had their chupacabra vacation and their bittersweet paradise drinks. Both drinks were great, but my favorite one was their chupacabra vacation, I like drinks that are on the sweeter side. The grand poobah Key Lime Pie was really good tarty and sweet. This place is decorated so well. It's dark and kitschy. We loved it. The staff were nice. The drinks looked cool and fun but two didn't drinks tasted the exact same and they weren't good unfortunately. They didn't taste boozy or fruity, just bitter. I've never had a bitter mai tai. The food was okay, nothing special but good if you are not too hungry. The beer was good and mojito too. The main critique: around $16 for 2 shrimp tacos (1 tortilla each and ONLY TWO shrimps in it). Where do i start......(Food Review) Pros: the Tiki theme is really well done. Even the restrooms are appointed and even plays jungle sounds overhead. At the end of the gathering we all walked out and nobody had anything nice to say after it was served. The onion rings and homemade garlic aioli was the only sides i tasted from other peoples meals. Entree: Thai Peanut Salad with tofu Im trying to find something good about the salad and all i can think of was the Peanuts tasted fresh..... The biggest sin was the "Sesame-Peanut dressing" that tasted like vinegar. If its a vinaigrette list it on the menu as such it was so unpleasant i took 3 bite and gave up. Since it was "Happy hour" and i was still hungry i ordered a small caesar salad, so that i wouldn't starve. It came out and it was so bland i didn't even finish it. Service: Was good but not great, no "pre" drops but 2 table touches. *Check you bill before paying, seems a 4 top they already include a 20% gratuity...... In the end we all decided Broken Compass Tiki was not worth a revisit. The prices, quality of food, atmosphere was okay. I don't drink alcohol so no idea what the cocktails are like so no review there. With a bit more attention to the food would make it more viable. read more

What fun! I wanted to take my son out with some family and friends for his 21st birthday. This place did not disappoint! We ate lots of food from poke nachos, Caesar salad to Brussel sprouts, spaghetti and meatballs and much more. We tried many drinks and all had great feedback. I asked the bartender for recommendation for a special drink for my son and she recommended the chupacabra. It was lit on fire and when he went to get it they announced his birthday and rang the bell. So fun! We all loved it and would go back again. The theme is so fun and over the top. Hands down the best mixed drinks and food in Burbank! It's tough to find great bars with food in this area and The Broken Compass is not to be missed. Not only is the shipwrecked decor and lighting captivating but so are their cocktails, which are made from fresh ingredients. Their bartenders are experienced with a wide knowledge of mixed beverages. This is a real bar people, come ready to enjoy and drink up! They are closed on Mondays, BUT, if you have time don't miss their daily happy hour from 2pm till 5pm. Try the sliders and get a cold beer on tap for a great value. Think "high-end pub food," but on the spicier, zestier side of flavors. One last mention is that they still offer a variety of unique housemade dips from their previous menu. Tiki bar fan here. Visited yesterday, excited to explore a new tiki bar and happy hour menu. The decor is great and we were greeted and offered seats as soon as we walked in. Strong start. However, the service left a lot to be desired. It took a few minutes just to be waited on, although it wasn't busy and a bartender was standing nearby talking to an alcohol rep while we sat waiting. The gentleman finally waited on us and although nice, came across a bit condescendingly when asking for an ingredient exclusion . Same thing happened again when asking the second bartender if he could add some pineapple juice to the Mai tai (I'm more accustomed to the trader Vic's version, but their classic did grow on me after a while), but he caught himself and corrected course. As someone who is a lover of chips and onion dip I was excited to try the one they had on their happy hour menu. It's fantastic, but we ran out of chips well before the dip. I asked if it was possible to get a few more chips and the bartender said they can't make more chips unless we order the chips and dip again... but that we would probably be in the same predicament of being left with dip and no chips once more. Sounded like pointing out a problem without a solution. A very odd approach indeed. I almost ordered more, but my partner stopped me. Seems silly that they can't throw in a few more chips for first time customers, especially after I spent $65 for a brief Happy Hour visit. Customer service didn't appear to be a top focus of this establishment during my visit, but perhaps it was an off day. The vibe unfortunately wasn't very warm or welcoming. The happy hour drink prices aren't great, but the happy hour food prices are. Kudos for the decor, Cesar salad , and chips and dip. I'm used to going to tiki bars and I thought this place was a bar, but it's more of a restaurant. I came on a busy Friday night and I enjoyed my time. I sat at the bar where you can also dine. I had poke nachos and a hot chicken sandwich. The poke nachos are perfect for sharing, however these were not poke nachos. The fried wontons were good, but that's about it for the dish itself. Poké is topped with fish, but this was more like salsa or ceviche. There was little to no fish or avocado. Instead cucumber and tomato were used to make it appear as if there is fish and avocado. That's definitely a new one for me in eating this particular dish. So hard pass on that. The hot chicken sandwich. Was tasty and (thankfully) not too messy to eat. I had it with onion rings which were good and on the bigger side. To drink I had Bittersweet Paradise it was a strong one. read more

As soon as you walk in you are immersed in a tiki vibe; the decor, the ambiance; definitely living up to the name. We walked in on a Friday evening at about 7pm and it was PACKED. Granted it was Friday the 13th and they had a special menu for the occasion. We were quoted a 45min to hour wait for a table for 2; and no they do not take reservations. It was crowded around the entrance as multiple parties stood by waiting to be seated so it was a little uncomfortable. The bar however is first come first serve self seating so we got to hunting! After about 20-25 min we were able to find two seats. With it being crazy hectic it was a little while until someone was able to take our order. Here is what we ordered: To start we got the pu pu platter: the aloha dippers were FIRE, the poke was absolutely amazing with a great marinade, the coconut shrimp was overcooked but the size and crunch were good, the macaroni salad lacked flavor, and the deviled eggs were surprisingly really tasty! We also ordered the pork katsu sandwich: it was so delicious; all the sauces combined with the grilled pineapple and crunch of the fried pork came together beautifully, although I would've liked a thicker piece of pork. To drink we went with the bittersweet paradise and the picante amor as our first round. Both delicious, not overly sweet and very refreshing. Our second round we both got the jet pilot and ohmygoodness does it pack a punch. The spices of the rum are really interesting and I enjoyed it very much. It is however extremely strong. For our last round we got the chupacabra and a traditional margarita. Again great quality ingredients and made perfectly. We were waited in by Thomas and Tor and they were exceptional. Both making awesome drinks and although being busy they both made the time to chat with us. If you're able to sit by Tor I highly recommend it as you will be entertained with his stories and knowledge of the Broken Compass. We couldn't help ourselves and ordered a smash burger to go. I chose Broken Compass in Burbank to celebrate a birthday because I really loved the vibe there and wanted to make it happen, even knowing that they don't take reservations for large groups. I went out of my way to arrive five hours early to ask about securing a spot and whether I could bring a cake (a Tres Leches from Porto's that needs refrigeration). The hostess I spoke to then was so gracious and accommodating, telling me it would be fine. When I came back about 1 hour and 45 minutes before our 7:30 gathering (for seven people), I was met by a different host who was not welcoming at all. I asked if they could refrigerate the cake, and his immediate response was, "We have no room for a cake." When I mentioned that the hostess had said it would be okay earlier, he checked, came back, and repeated that there was no room again in a short, unfriendly manner. I explained that if I had known, I would have made other arrangements, but he wasn't very accommodating. I even asked if my wanting to do a birthday celebration was bothering him. It was disheartening; tears filled my eyes because it shouldn't be that hard to make guests feel welcome. Eventually, he came back and said they made room for the cake, which I was grateful for, but there was never an apology or a warm gesture to smooth things over. Instead of being invited to relax at the bar while I waited, I had to ask myself, and even then, he acted reluctant. Thankfully, once I was at the bar, the bartenders were friendly and made me feel better, and our server for the evening was exceptional. The other servers were also pleasant, and the food was of good quality. My guests enjoyed themselves. The only part I wish I could erase was the arrival. First impressions are powerful, and it takes no extra effort to greet people kindly. I truly hope the owners see this and train their staff better, because a warm welcome would have made this celebration so much smoother. read more

The theme was pirate with nice decorations and blue tinted windows. The one page lunch menu was a bit difficult to read but I ordered their sandwich and a non-alcoholic $12 drink. The sandwich was tasty but definitely not $17 worth because it was only a sandwich. I ordered their chips on the side for $6. I asked for ranch and they bring me a tiny medicine cup size and charged me $1. All would have been ok but my NON Alcoholic drink was nothing but ice (see picture). Then I had to use the RR and accidentally went to the room we came in looking for it and got scold by the ticket handing pirate telling me that this is not a lobby and I couldn't be here. We LOVE theme restaurants and stopped in here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The place was hoppin', but we were seated within ten minutes and enjoyed lounge seating in the meantime. We have a family member who is allergic to shellfish and our server, Erin, was very helpful in assisting her with her selection. Erin then proceeded to help us out with tips on our upcoming concert venue! She's a five star server for sure! The drinks are strong and good and the food is exactly what we wanted. The poke was an odd ratio of chips to fish, but it was tasty. The rum flight #2 was terrific! Our server, Erin, was cheerful and attentive. The interior decor is on theme and fun; even the restroom had ocean waves and seagull sounds. They don't take reservations, but we had no trouble being seated at 5:00 on a Sunday afternoon even though it was very busy. It's a hidden spot in Burbank - literally! I'd never been there before and drove by the place a couple times. The nondescript front of the establishment makes it look like something other than it really is. Plus there are no windows because, of course, what tiki bar has them? Unlike other tiki joints in the area, this one has a ton of food and drink options and the wait staff is right there to explain them all and help you choose. My friend and I shared the Orange Popcorn Chicken, the Seasoned Tots, and the Poke Nachos. The portions are fairly large, and we didn't finish it all, but each dish was really yummy. The drinks are STRONG! Warning: limit yourself to two. I woke up the next day feeling like I'd had four! Just sayin'! Ask your server for drink recommendations based on your preferences for taste and liquor. They have literally everything! I got a Chupacabra's Vacation which was a little too bitter for my taste, so I got something a bit more balanced for the 2nd drink which was a secret recipe that is made daily. Couldn't tell you what was in it, but it was amazing and it was served in a Spam can! Awesome fun. The ambiance in the restaurant is a fun pirate-themed shipwreck style joint. One of the worst experiences I've had in a long time. We were seated in this cramped area inches from the people on either side of us. The lady was coughing constantly without covering her mouth. The food looked good. I ordered fish and chips. Nice and crispy. Exterior had absolutely no taste. And the french fries were over salted but the biggest insult was a $16 drink that just tasted like a squirt of lemon with seltzer. It was truly awful. I didn't complain because my friend didn't want to but I have to say something I spent $40 for a terrible terrible experience. I came here with family for my daughter's birthday and it was so fun! The server was so nice and friendly. Made sure to check in with us and made sure we liked our food. Which the food was so good! The deviled eggs had a miso paste in it and was so good we asked what was in it to try and make it at home since it does not compare to regular deviled eggs.
