I'm a huge 'Taco Tuesday' fan and tend to go to my same favorite spots in the city. Tonight I opted to step into a place I've heard a lot about and the jury verdict is this: The $2 'Tuesday Tacos' are not very filling in fact the waiter said there's 1/3 less meat in them versus the regular tacos on the menu and as a point of clarification the $2 tacos are limited to only the chicken and pork ones. After what normally would fill me at my fave spot, I was still hungry! So I ended up ordering a quesadilla which was enormous and did the job of a satisfying meal. Generous portion of meat and came with a side of fresh pico. If hot sauces is your jam, then Broken English has your back with more than enough variety to try out. The overall vibe I'd give 5-Stars! It was vibrant, festive, played upbeat music (not too loud to hear conversation) and seemed to draw a professional local loop neighborhood crowd. It's been a min since I posted ladies and gentlemen but I hope everyone is doing great in the year of our Lord 2023. Know just recently I was walking from Chick-fil-A and I saw a taco pub on the way back, which I have seen before and it's always so packed. Anyway, I said to myself let me give them a try! As I went in the pub I was greeted with a friendly smile from the hostess, who was great btw! She recommended the fried chicken taco which I have never had before. I usually do steak with cilantro and onion on a corn shell but let me tell you this fried chicken taco was amazing 10 out of 10 now I totally understand why they are always packed and then not only did she give me that great recommendation she told me they have like some special deal on their Tacos on Thursdays this is $2 tacos I'm not sure because my mind is still blown away from how those fried chicken tacos tasted! But this is a place you definitely want to check out the ambiance it's perfect because it's a pub not too flashy not too gritty right in the middle. Chose this restaurant because it has dog friendly patio. Tacos were good but not up to the California or Texas Standard. Ambiance was descent. Margarita was also good but pretty expensive for the quantity you get in a pitcher. They do have good selection of tacos though. It started raining when we sere out having food with our dog. Then we moved inside and they did let the dog come inside with us. So additional star for that. read more

Dang!!!!! I don't know where to begin ! The staff is courteous and very very professional and welcoming!! The art alone is worth coming in and having a seat. Now on to the food! Tacos are off the hook! VERY VERY VERY authentic ! The tortillas to the meat is perfectly balance and the salsas bring the proper balance to a rainbows of flavors that just explode in your mouth with every bite. Mexican food landed on a Monday while visiting Chicago for my wife and I. Due to how close this place was and also recommendations from friends that had tried it before we decided to come check it out, seemed to be the most affordable of all the Mexican places found in the city by Michigan Avenue. So we came.. Luckily it was Memorial Day so there was parking availability in the evening.. and the place was pretty slow, we were seated immediately. Instead of ordering individual tacos, my wife and I went for their 6 for $20 offer just to have a variety of tacos available. They didn't disappoint, rolled in corn tortillas the tacos were pretty filling, as we had 3 a piece - steak, shrimp and fried chicken. The steak ones were pretty soft and had a good flavor. The shrimp ones weren't dry and had a nice sauce to compliment them, along with some cabbage inside.. and the fried chicken ones were crunchy and also pretty good. We also had their chips and tortillas which were only $4.. it was a good starter for the most part. The ambiance was great, very modern with the wall paintings, and there was good music playing. I would definitely come here to hangout and enjoy a drink or 2. Service was great and our food came out within 5 minutes of ordering ( grant it, hardly anyone there). I came to Broken English on St Patrick's Day with a group of 10 friends and everyone was so kind. The bouncer made fun conversation at the door and even wished my friend happy belated birthday! We went to the bar which had zero wait and our bartender, Kevin, was seriously the most attentive, amazing, generous person that has served us today. Walking into this bar there's literally lights everywhere. It looks like Stranger Things. There's lights hung up everywhere and every single wall including the ceiling are painted. Such a cute place to get an Instagram photo (there's even a wall you can take photos with outside). I've been to the Lincoln Park location and I can honestly say that I am so impressed with the consistently amazing quality and service at Broken English! read more

Unfortunately, prices were not and portions were not. 6 tacos for $20? Yes, I understand this place is downtown and overhead is probably sky high, but tacos for $3.33 each? For that price for tacos there should at least be bigger portions of meat. Granted I'm comparing these to southern California prices where tacos joints are a plenty. Let's taco about how delicious Broken English Taco Pub is! My friend and I wanted to go to Heaven on Seven but it was closed (always double check the times). Anyways, we're always down for Tacos so it didn't take us long to decide on BETP. I arrived before my friend and I put my name on the wait list. They told me it would be about 20 mins. One thing I didn't like is that there really is no proper "waiting area" and so you're just awkwardly standing in the middle of what should be a foyer waiting to get a text to see the server. I stepped outside but still felt so awks waiting in front of the business. Guess how happy I was when in less than 10 mins I got a text message to go see my waiter and that my table was ready. Whoo hoo! I was really happy when I was finally seated. My friend still didn't show but I ordered guac and chips for us and a pineapple fresco. The pineanpple fresco is a non- alcoholic fruity mocktail but not worth the +5 price. It just didn't taste fresh. The guac is delicious and made fresh in house- fair warning, it does have a slight kick to it. I really enjoyed the red cooked onions on top of the guac. Complimented it so well! I ordered the Tinga de Pollo and Barbacoa tacos. The barbacoa tacos contained shredded beef, serrano peppers, onions and thinly sliced carrots on corn tacos. The Tinga de pollo is slow simmered chicken and onion in a chipotle garlic pineanpple and cilantro sauce. I don't know why the barbacoa came with significantly more meat than on the Tinga de Pollo. The barbacoa wasn't as spicy as the tinga de pollo but both items were extremely flavorful. The Serrano peppers give the Tinga de pollo a slightly spicy taste but the onion calms the side effects. As for the Barbacoa- well, I had no self control, I would have ordered another order of this because it was just so delicious. I love slow cooked beef so this beef with all my favorite spices was heaven in my mouth! My friend and I ate it in no time! Although it didn't look like a lot of food, it was a lot of food and we were stuffed after having four tacos each. The atmosphere is nice- not the place to go to on a first date as it's kinda sorta hard to hear anything. This place is intimate- it's got dim lighting but this is where you go to pre- game and eat before heading out to the next bar. It's cute- a great place to go to with larger parties- there were actually a few holiday parties taking place. I would highly recommend it to everyone- you won't regret coming here! read more

Overall excellent taco's and service at a reasonable price. Went here with a group for a pre-theater dinner. We had a total of 7 and they were able to seat us at one large table. Started with drinks, chips and queso. I loved the Rojo Sangria. The margarita was disappointing though, it lacked overall flavor and could barely taste any tequila. Queso was great, was a large portion so ended up asking for 2nd basket of chips. Our group got a variety of taco's and the quesadillas. All were excellent. I especially enjoyed the fried chicken taco, and the fish (cod) taco. Each had the right amount of heat. Service was great. Friendly, helpful and efficient. Only downside to the restaurant is the volume. Is it is REALLY LOUD. The music volume is frankly too high, you have to shout above it - you can't really have a nice conversation with your guests. I went here for late lunch on a brutally long work day. So naturally I had a few beers. The beer prices are acceptable market rates, but not cheap. Beer selection was good for me, but I would not call it extensive. I ordered shrimp and pork tacos. Both were good. I did not love the salsa provided by the bartender. Neither was spicy and one was loaded with ginger. But the tacos didn't need any added salsa. The seasoning that came with the tacos was sufficient. Service was good, but I don't like the ingested bar thing. I'm not sure if that is deliberate, but I don't want to eat lunch in my coat and hat. Next time I will dress in layers. read more

This is one of those places where the food is palatable enough that you can choke it down but you leave wishing you went someplace else. The service was also quite bad. We arrived to a mostly empty restaurant and were told there were no tables available and we had to sit at the bar. Fine, so my friend went online and made a reservation for right then and for some reason they were able to immediately seat us at a table. So dumb. Note that the tables never filled up in the hour we were there. I ordered queso to start but it didn't come out until I ordered it a second time, then it came after our entrees. My blood sugar was low while walking around the city. Stopped in for some orange juice, actually any kind of juice. I gave my order to the bartender and she proceeded to make 6, yes 6 drinks before getting me juice. So I walked over where she was making juice and said my blood sugar is low, I need some juice right away. She then proceeded to tell me they only have cranberry juice. Fine, cranberry juice then. Got to check them out the other night after seeing Russell Peters at Chicago theater. We wanted to grab a bite somewhere but with a group and no plan, most sites nearer the restaurant were either closing or swamped with fallout from the show. So we opted here, the patio was closing up for the night (meh) and many tables had emptied since the dinner crowd was on their way out. The plan was to have a taco and hop elsewhere but somehow we got stuck and dinner was as follows. When I review the highlights on Yelp, they fall in line with the thoughts I had when entering. Cheap booze specials, loud music, loud decor, loud guests and tacos. My group found most of the food quite a bore. The best item on the menu is the La Gringa, which is most commonly an al pastor quesadilla. Everything else was so boring but luckily we had a stellar waiter, he was on-the-spot every time we needed something. I never had to speak out to grab service, I feel like he was actively looking to each of his tables and connecting with customers immediately. It made our ordering and exiting much quicker. With the abundance of tacos in Chicago.. they could be better. Cost vs offering, not worth the visit. If I were bar hopping or joining a happy hour, maybe, just for booze specials. read more

Updating my review. Came back here today after not being here for a while and it was amazing!! I got to try so many more tacos that I didn't try before. My fav taco for life is a pork Al Pastor and Broken English's version of it is very good! THE BEST TACO HERE IS THE FRIED CHICKEN. Hands down best taco on the menu in my opinion if you like flaavvooorrr. I'm Asian, so naturally I love lots of flavor and sauces. I love that they give you so many options of hot sauces as add ons for your tacos. Makes them so much better!! I've been to the other locations and they are all always busy, and for good reason.
