I'm so happy we finally decided to stop in and try Broken Engrish! Admittedly, I don't eat at vegetarian restaurants often, but this place far exceeded expectations. The service (owner?) was very friendly and helpful, the ambiance was nice, and the food was delicious and flavorful. I would not hesitate to come back here at any time. To eat, we tried the "beef" noodle soup, mapo tofu waffle fries, and tomato & scrambled eggs. The "beef" noodle soup was definitely my favorite. Go ahead and give this place a try! It will not disappoint.

Dont know what took us so long to stop in but we are so glad we did today! The food is so delicious. We couldnt get over the dan dan noodles and the sauce. The mapo tofu waffle fries are so good and such a fun take. The "pork" on rice is clearly popular for a reason. Could eat it every day. Super excited to come back and try more food and get more dan dan! Didnt have a chance to try the shakes but excited to. The owner is super nice and made the experience super chill. 10/10 Will definitely be back. The photo is midway through our meal, we couldnt wait to dig in! Still cant believe everything is vegetarian/vegan!

This place is way better than I expected. The place is simple. You ring the bell to place an order and pay as you place the order. The taste is clean, fresh and authentic. It is hard to find water spinach on the menu. And they have it. So i was super excited about that. Eating here is like home cooked Taiwanese food. It was the type of food you would eat at home if you family can cook well. I will definitely be back again.

Do not let the cute name fool you, the food here is seriously good. We ordered the DanDan Noodle, Mince Pork n rice, and omlette. The peanut flavor of the DanDan Noodle was perfect. You could not tell that the minced pork was vegan. The onletteeas also abdolutely delish...very close to a true egg omlette in both flavor and texture. Gerry, the owner, is so cool and nice. He told us that he also makes has a Peanut Butter milkshake on the menu which we overlooked. Other flavors also available. We will definately be coming back.. and I will absolutely be ordering that shake.

Broken Engrish is a bit of a hidden gem just outside of Hollywood proper, but if you want to get some interesting vegetarian/vegan Taiwanese cuisine, this is worth exploring. The best dish is the Stewed Jackfruit "Beef" Noodle Soup. It is a hearty noodle soup that can easily fool any meat eater when it comes to the savory broth with the traditional Taiwanese 5-spice stew. The jackfruit may not be beef, but it is just as savory and has surprisingly good texture. The noodle is nice and chewy, as well. The 2nd best dish is the Braised Minced "Pork" on Rice. The "pork" is Beyond Meat made with avocado oil and served with rice, house-pickled daikon that is a must to balance the flavor, tea-marinated egg (tofu substitute available), and green onions. The daikon really is the key to add interest to the flavor which is delicious but a bit one-note without the daikon. Still though, it is yummy, just ask for extra daikon. The skirt potstickers are delicious and also taste like your normal potstickers, so you can't go wrong with them. No notes. The Bok-Choy is pretty good, but not really my choice of vegetables in general. Everyone else still enjoyed it though. Lastly, I only wish I saw the Chili Oil early on. I bet it would make all these dishes taste even better! It is essential for enjoying Taiwanese cuisine in my opinion!

After 8 o'clock it's free to park, but the restaurant usually closes at eight so if you come a little bit before.

Broken Engrish. Very tasty food. I wish the portions were bigger but now nowadays, it seems to be the norm. Definitely not cheap but the noodles were really chewy and they had a nice consistency. There was some peanut sauce inside of it, which made it rich. I would definitely add some kind of acid to lighten the richness of the sauce. Add the spicy chili oil for it gives it a nice kick and added flavor. The cucumber salad is nice and refreshing. I would say that if I were to eat the bowl of noodles alone, I would not have been full. Parking is out in the street. After 8 o'clock It's free but the restaurant closes early. It's definitely a small place. Jerry the chef is passionate about sharing vegan food to the world the food that he cooks is the food that he likes to eat. It really is a one-man show there. He cooks, cleans, cooks again, and waits table. It's amazing that he does it all by himself. Overall, very tasty food if it weren't so far away I would consider returning.

Service was quick and amazing. Food was authentic, amazing, and high quality. To add onto it, everything is vegetarian!! Awesome to see!! The ambiance is cozy and welcoming. Coming from a Taiwanese person who grew up on the food, this is truly amazing stuff. I highly recommend if you are craving Asian food or visiting the LA area. Hidden gem for sure.

Really cool spot. Vegetarian Taiwanese food: very unique in my opinion. I've not seen this in the restaurant scene before! Maple banana shake: so good!!! Thick and creamy but not too thick. Still drinkable. Sweet but not too sweet. Amazing. 5/5 Garlic mushroom rice: very tasty and flavorful. Generous portion. Good for sharing. Bouncy mushrooms and sticky rice. Just a little bit too oily. 4/5 Marinated hard boiled egg: I was expecting a flavor similar to tea eggs but this tasted like it had been marinated in just soy sauce. So a very one dimensional overly salty egg. 2/5 Plenty of seating and intentional ambience.

Before the food... the restaurant name is FIRE and their name in chinese is EVEN MORE FIRE. So they serve vegetarian taiwanese food right Their chinese name is 菜英文 The 菜 means vegetable in chinese, so it's a vegetarian restaurant. But 菜 also means "bad" in slang, and 英文 means english, so 菜英文 means broken engrish. Finally, 菜英文 and 蔡英文 are pronounced the same, with the latter being the name of the former taiwanese president, hence it being taiwanese food TRIPLE ENTENDRE SO FIRE Anyways the food was alright lol Their ru rou fan was actually pretty good, good quality of flavor and tasted like real meat. Probably better than some restaurants that serve the dish with real pork. Their beef noodle soup unfortunately did not do the same, I think it's just really hard to recreate such a beef centered dish without using real beef. The vibe is very silly too, feels like a dive bar and the owner is just some dude who's there and talks to you.

don't know why yelp is reporting closed i literally went there tonight my only regret is not coming here sooner: - peanut dan dan noodles: 10/10 delicious peanut flavor with a bit of heat and sparklingly fresh vegetables - minced pork on rice: 10/10 strong earthy umami flavoring balances perfectly with the fluffy rice and sharp pickled daikon - fried potstickers: 10/10 literally 20 vegetables inside, seasoned to perfection with a crunchy border and rich tangy sauce chef is a lovely person and if you don't mind that there's no table service, it's a lovely place to sit and eat as well can't wait to come back and try literally everything

I put off coming here for years because there's something about being from the SGV where you write…read moreoff these types of restaurants as Instagram fads/only getting recognition because of it. But in all honesty Liu's Cafe is a reminder that this place shouldn't be frowned upon because Chinese restaurants are devalued. Liu's Cafe serves a limited menu of Taiwanese and Hong Kong staples with each dish tenderly presented. I made my friends meet up on a Friday morning before opening (around 10:40 hahaha) so we snagged seats easily. There's a handful of large tables for big groups, but most tables catered to small duos. Pricing isn't crazy, but for anyone from the SGV, you will find it a little steep since the portions are a little small. That being said, that doesn't diminish the value of the food here. We ordered: Kaya jam toast - tasty treat! I didn't taste much of the salted egg yolk, but it was unique for sure. Beef noodle soup - I don't eat beef, but my friend devoured it! She said it a wholesome, hearty balance of flavors, meat, and veg. Braised pork belly rice - I was super impressed at how flavorful it was without having to rely on being too fatty (nothing wrong with that in a pork belly dish, but I was super surprised as the depth of flavor it had). The pickled cucumber made each bite perfect. My main delta was there's a tad more rice than meat. Spicy wontons - the sauce is what stuck out and it is FRAGRANT. I could easily drink it or bathe in it. So delicious and crave-able! Hong Kong French toast - admittedly sweeter than any French toast I had in Hong Kong, but the textures of what you'd get in a breakfast place in HK are all there. If you're not a fan of desserts that are sweet (versus "not too sweet"), I'd pass on this. Otherwise the custard-like texture between bites can't be beat! Some of these reviews are likely from people who make the trek out here from the SGV/626 that often have a chip on their shoulder as to how the food here gets recognized by an international ranking system where their favorite mom and pop places are struggling. Liu's Cafe should be an invitation to remember that there should be more recognition of those types of restaurants and space for Liu's Cafe. The food isn't pretentious or pretends it does anything better than anywhere in the SGV, but instead it focuses on a small menu to perfectly execute each dish. Parking is a pain bc ktown lol, but I would gladly struggle through parking and a drive to come here again (I will avoid peak hours bc I hate waiting in line anywhere). I'll be back!

Went early to see if anything opened or if walk-in would be faster, surprisingly they actually had something come available sooner. We opted to sit inside and loved the ambiance. Food - amazing! I read reviews first and watched a couple IG videos so I knew a general idea of what we wanted to order. Glad the server suggested the orange chicken over the walnut shrimp when we were debating it. Chil wontons, absolutely a must get, different from DTF, not crazy spicy but full of flavor and richness. XO fatty noodles, perfect chewiness on the rolled noodles and the flavors were well balanced, we enjoyed them with a little chili paste and the orange chicken as the protein. Orange chicken, soooo much more flavorful than your average Panda Express orange chicken, good sized nuggets of chicken that were crispy and tender at the same time, and the zest livened it up. BBQ pork shank, our server did warn us it's not the easiest to eat, but it's worth it, hard to see cutting it off the bone because it was so dimly lite in the restaurant and your hands will get sticky but once you get chunks off the bone and your bao bun built it's delicious especially when you get the lacquered crispy skin yummm! Only skip for the night was the mango sticky rice. Much rather would've spend $8 on something else. The mango was tart/sour. The sticky rice was too wet and mushy. It was a pass for both of us. Service - our server was awesome. From greeting to end, he was the right amount of attentive and was super helpful with suggestions. Everyone from the food runner to the busser, they were all so nice. From getting us chili paste or to go containers, customer service was on point. Parking - love love that are a few parking spaces right out front. They're metered. But after 8pm it was free so perfect for us. MIAN completely blew me away. From the moment I walked in, the aromas set the tone for how good the…read morefood was going to be. I started with the house made chili oil dumplings and they were unreal. The dumplings were perfectly cooked and the chili oil with black vinegar was so good I ended up using it on everything. The staff was incredibly kind and happily gave me extra sauce when I asked. The spicy beef noodle soup was the standout. The beef was insanely tender and the broth was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of heat. The noodles had great texture and held up well in the soup. I also tried the Chengdu zajiang noodle and loved it. The sauce had that numbing spice and deep flavor, and the egg on top made it even better. Every bite felt intentional and well executed. The pickled cucumbers deserve their own mention. Crunchy, tangy, and full of flavor, easily some of the best I have had, even better than Din Tai Fung. On top of all that, they offer great deals after 3pm with discounted noodles and half off beer. MIAN is easily one of the best noodle spots around and I would come back without hesitation.

This place definitely smacks; I'm always getting me some beef noodles with L1 (a littleeee spice) and M1 (a little numbing oil) and it's perfect for my dainty tastebuds. The service is usually pretty quick, but they do a lottt of meal-making during happy hour (3-6) so it's arguably a little slower then. The ambiance is pretty spare, with some placemats that explain mung bean soup and some lower-key Chinese decor throughout. It's a simple place, but it really does get the job done. I'll be back!
