We've ordered Shanghai Rose a couple of times now for Friday night dinners and we've been pleased with our selections. We did so again recently and we liked the items we ordered. The beef chow fun with soy sauce ($18) had good flavor. The beef was tender. This was a good version. Szechuan beef ($21) was a little spicy for me but the meat was tender. Everyone else liked it. Sauteed string beans ($17) was also flavorful and did not disappoint. Half Beijing duck ($38) was very good. Crispy skin, moist and flavorful meat. It comes with cucumbers and hoisin sauce that you can roll in their provided wrapper. It seemed like regular flour tortillas to me. It wasnt the typical Asian crepe. We've also had pork shumai ($10) for 6 pieces. Mini baked bbq buns ($7.98) for 3. They were both good. Other dim sum plates were decent but the shumai and baked buns are what I remember liking. A friend recommended Shanghai Rose to me. Her family dines there often. I've driven by that intersection many times over the years but have yet to pull in. It's hard to find a good dim sum place in the SFV and after today's lunch unfortunately I'm still on the hunt. We can start with the positives: located on Ventura Blvd and they have a parking lot, large clean restaurant so can accommodate large parties. The food was average though. The prices seemed rather high for dim sum. We ordered entrees and dim sum. The dim sum came out much later than the entrees which it was the opposite. Service was slow and not very attentive. We had to flag someone down each time we needed someone and it was a lot of waiting. At least when the dim sum did finally came out it was very hot. read more

Shanghai Rose is one of my favorite spots for dim sum! Their new location is beautiful, with plenty of space, a full bar, and a great atmosphere. The food is always fresh and delicious, and everything I've tried has been consistently good. One of my favorite things about the new location is their happy hour. They have great specials, and I highly recommend the calamari with an ice-cold beer. If you're craving delicious dim sum and a great place to relax, this is definitely worth a visit! read more

OMGosh!!! This was actually one of my very first reviews from ten years ago, which explains why I was so confused when I showed up at the new location. I had no idea they moved five years ago! But honestly, the only thing that changed is the address, the food is still just as amazing as I remember. If anything, I'm glad they relocated. The new spot is perfect for a family dinner or just hanging out with the girls. I ordered all my favorites, the pork buns, pork egg foo young, and Yang fried rice. Everything was delicious and tasted just like old times. And Rose is still the owner, which made it feel even more special. We used to stop by after the show for lunch, and she would always be there, so it brought back a lot of sweet memories. We visited Shanghai Rose with friends and our kids. The meal started off fine, but things went downhill quickly. During our visit, I noticed an employee named Joseph loudly yelling at an older gray-haired gentleman who appeared to be bringing food out from the kitchen. It wasn't my business, but it was uncomfortable to watch. The real issue came when I received the bill. I politely told Joseph that the white rice and Szechuan dish we ordered never arrived at our table. Instead of checking with the kitchen or handling the situation professionally, he immediately responded in front of other customers: "Yes it did! You ate it and now you're trying not to pay for it!" I was completely baffled. Does he really think I'm trying to get out of paying for a side of white rice? To make that accusation publicly in front of other patrons was embarrassing and unprofessional. At that point, it wasn't even worth arguing. I paid the bill and left. The dim sum was mediocre, but the customer service was far worse. Had I read some of the other reviews beforehand, I probably would have chosen somewhere else. After this experience, I can understand why so many people complain about the service. I won't be returning. read more

In a seemingly futile quest to find a half-decent Chinese restaurant in the San Fernando Valley, I stumbled upon this upstairs venue with some time to kill. The restaurant is large and comfortable, the staff is friendly and accomodating. But that's the only positive thing I can say about it. The problem is the food: over-priced, greasy as hell and barely edible. The dish I ordered which cost $24 in no way, shape, or form resembled what it's supposed to be. Hard to believe they could ever fill the tables in this place, it's terrible. The service is slow. When we came, they asked us how many were in our group. We told them our group was 6, but two are currently trying to park, so they will be there very soon, and we should get seated. They said ok, walked away, and made us wait anyway until the other two came, even though the restaurant was very open and empty. Heck, the manager who asked us, he wasn't even doing anything when he went back inside anyway. Then he came back out about 5 minutes after and although he saw and knew we were all there, still asked us if our party was complete. He SAW US through the windows, c'mon dude! Ordering food and getting it was not an issue. The food is standard, but not bad. Better than other Dim Sum restaurants in the valley, but on-par with the worst of SGV. Bf and I have been here a couple times and he likes to come here when he's in the valley. I'm impressed by how much we've made this latest meal stretch. We spent close to $130 for a lot of dim sum, 2 kinds of noodles, and green beans. All together we've gotten 5 meals out of this order (one each dining, and three with the leftovers). Their dim sum is really delicious and I like the size of their dumplings. They're hearty and full. I really like their bao although I wish some of the pork in it wasn't as fatty. Went there for quick lunch. Page was our server,she was very friendly with full knowledge of all different types of dishes. Her happy packed with energy attitudes made us more engaged and enjoying our meal even more. We wanted Dim Dum and menu was a good variety, each tasting fresh and delicious . We also tried/ loved combo fried rice and garlic bok choy. The ambience was really nice. Not sure why I haven't been to Shanghai Rose more often, but now that I have "rediscovered" after they moved, I will be back any time I crave dim sum. My first experience with Shanghai Rose was several years ago when they were at a different location on Ventura Boulevard. I liked it then but then hadn't seen them around again. I've been on a dim sum kick lately and found out Shanghai. Rose is now located on Laurel Canyon and Ventura Boulevard where Daily Grill was. I've been back twice in the past two weeks and we loved it! Shanghai Rose is very affordable, and has a great menu featuring all of your favorite traditional dim sum dishes, along with several other options. Their shu mai is fantastic, and so are the har gow, steamed pork bao, baked pork bao, and the list goes on. Basically, everything we tried we really liked, with the egg yolk, bao being a special favorite of my party. Finally, there is traditional dim sum that tastes authentic and delicious in the Valley so if you haven't tried Shanghai Rose, do yourself a favor and stop in. I prefer this over some of the fancier, new dim sum inspired restaurants we've seen around. read more

While we expected it to be loud due to several large parties (which was understandable), the restaurant clearly did not anticipate or staff appropriately for the crowd they had booked. There was only one waiter handling five tables, three of which were parties of 10 or more. Service suffered as a result. My dumplings arrived after a 35-minute wait and were cold, suggesting they were not freshly made. Most likely frozen. Our soup didn't arrive until halfway through the meal, which disrupted the flow of dining. The large parties were clearly on the books, so this situation could have been avoided with better planning and staffing. Disappointing overall, especially for a holiday evening when expectations are understandably higher. read more

Honestly I'm giving it a 4 star because it was exactly what I expected before I walked in, had a rough day and wanted a greasy Chinese spot that slaps... you know it's super unhealthy and you know they use bunch of sugar in their dishes but it's exactly what you would expect from a second floor Chinese restaurant. We ordered delivery through grub hub. Food was fine, until my sister cut into her hargow and found a metal scrubby part. This is very concerning as our 4 year old eats this often. Thankfully our child did not eat this one. We immediately called the restaurant, spoke to the owner herself, Rose. Her response was that she cannot do anything about the order and let Grubhub know. This was a very disappointing response as to where my partner then wanted to speak with her. They exchanged words, yet, not sure how they will handle this matter internally. We have eaten many times at the restaurant. Unfortunately, we will not be dining here or ordering take away any longer. To ownership, please get rid of these metal scrubbies. You need to research for safer alternatives. They are a danger to ingest especially for children. This can cause serious damage to a persons health if swallowed. read more

Not up to standard with freshness or food quality I love Dim Sum but this place has gotten pretty inconsistent and not fresh. The last time I was there, there was a sharp metal bristle in my scallop dumpling which the guy took off my bill obviously. But overall nothing tasted fresh or delicious and that was my last attempt at giving this place a chance. read more

This is a new location, as they moved a couple of blocks over from Ventura Blvd to the intersection of Laurel Canyon and Ventura. The new location is spacious, appealing and includes inside and outside seating! I love the all-day dim sum offerings here. Honestly, that's my biggest draw. Plenty of options, prices are a bit higher than the traditional but not too far off, and every dish has been so tasty. Service was efficient, polite and fast. No complaints there. Plenty of parking in the lot and underground. I saw a valet option, but didn't partake. I'd recommend: shrimp rice noodle, scallion pancake, fried dumplings, juicy soup dumplings, rice wrap, sautéed string beans, and chow mein.
