Stopped at Broken Yolk in Oceanside for breakfast on the way back from San Diego after the Padres absolutely smoked the Miami Marlins, so naturally we needed some post-game fuel. I went with the big breakfast burrito, and it was quite delicious--big enough to make me question whether I was still hungry or just committed to finishing it. My good friends Mr. Boothy and Mr. Bloewen went with the American breakfast. Their plates looked great, and the hash browns were getting some serious respect at the table. Most importantly, despite the restaurant's name, the egg yolk was NOT broken, so I'd call that a successful breakfast. Good food, good portions, good company, and a Padres victory to top it all off. Sharing my experience at the Broken Yolk this morning August 15th 2026 after coming from what seems to be a really harsh reality on life (road rage) ..... I am not huge on high volume breakfast joints, but if the need arises, I would definitely head to the Broken Yolk. They've got several locations throughout North San Diego. Our nearest spot was in South Oceanside. We headed there one Sunday around mid-morning to celebrate my son's 1st Communion. We had quite a few relatives in town to see the massive step for my son and his faith and so we wanted to treat our family and friends to something that would fill their bellies. And something a little more than Dennys or IHOP. I mean nothing wrong with either of those two spots. I love pancakes and the Monte Cristo at 2am at any Dennys will certainly hit the sweet spot! But...u know what I mean?!? So step 1, it was Saturday morning and the event was roughly 24 hours away. I knew they can get crowded on occasion hit this was the weekend AFTeR Mother's Day so I felt it may not be THaT crowded. Nonetheless, I called to make a reservation. The phone leads you to Yelp to make the Res. So I head to the site whereupon I read that if the party is over 8 you have to call instead. So now I'm starting to get a little sweaty. (You know, the precursor to anger which then can lead to rage?). Suffice to say it never reaches the boiling point even though when I called, the server answers and upon hearing g my request for accommodations for roughly 12-14 people, immediately refers me back ti the site. I stop her mid-sentence fully aware of her intentions and redirect her to me, right there, and right now. Waiting on the other end of that telephone line for assistance. Thank you to her, as she obliged and basically told me to come in and mention what I just said to her. So first thought of advice for the folks at the BY....you may want to solidify your reservation policy as everyone seemed a bit confused. So despite all of that, our party arrived exactly at the time mentioned, only TK have to wait for close to 39 min anyways! Again, BY management please see comment above. But I'm with a group who loves Jesus and just came from a beautiful ceremony for my son and so the vibes a currently positive. (They remain that way because God is Good!) Our server was awesome! Cannot recall his name but he took our party on (complete with at least half a dozen young kids) and did so with positivity the entire time! Loved that dude! Anyone who's been in the restaurant game knows what I mean about the 6 youngsters in the party. Heck they were involved in an intense full blown game of freeze tag once the food had been devoured. Thankfully the other patrons and workers thought them to be "cute". And yes I know the hidden meaning there but what are you gonna do?!? And by the way, wifey was out of town with the oldest and so I was solo with these hoodlums! All good through because again, Jesus is the Reason! Food was solid as it always is and had come to be expected. I cannot recall all of the order but I know that nobody left hungry and all were more than satisfied. Except maybe our waiter. As awesome as he was (and he was-Thank you God) he almost received a double tip as my father in law, who is one of those guys who tries to beat you to the bill and pay for everything before you even finish half your meal, did so without telling anyone and had already filled out the tip portion at around $50 unknowing that 18% had already been added due to the party size. Lucky for him I noticed and corrected. UNLucky for him is that h e noticed his method of beating me to the bill for over 20 years now and while he thinks his 75 year old behind is as quick as a mongoose in a pit of vipers, and as stealthy as.....well, I don't know what is stealthy right now...except for maybe me! Because this is where I was going here. I've known his tricks for decades yet.....quiet is the son-in-law who knows his place. Great time! Great food! GREAT server! So good! Finally went to this location this past weekend and I loved it. The fast that you can join the waitlist online is a game changer. So you're not waiting there much. Service was lacking honestly, but I know they were busy and it didn't seem like many servers were working, so I took a star off for that because we didn't get the service that we would have wanted. Visited Broken Yolk on 4/12 around noon. The GM (I believe her name was Toressa or Clarissa) was working the hostess desk. She said the wait for a booth was about 30 minutes. I asked about counter seating and was told it's first come, first served, but asked to still be put on the waitlist in case my partner wanted a booth. That simple request set her off. She got visibly upset and threw the iPad used for the waitlist to a young hostess. I asked what her name was and what the issue was, and she said I changed my mind after she "accommodated" me. When I asked if she was okay, she ignored me. Again, I asked her what her problem was and she ignored me. The hostess later explained she was stressed because it was busy--but it was a Sunday lunch rush, which is expected. A server also mentioned other customers have had similar issues with her. Very unprofessional behavior from someone in a GM role, especially taking it out on staff and guests. She's TOXIC and should be fired. read more

Once our food was delivered by another staff member, our server never even came by to check if everything was going well. I've been to broken yolk a few times as a kid but haven't been back since. While the options on the menu seemed promising the food was not great. I got the country scramble and the gravy lacked flavor. It was a pretty bland dish and I felt that the gravy was pretty disappointing considering it was what made the dish different from the other scrambles. The service was decent but none of us were impressed with our food. My wife had the Nutella crepes and they were tasty although she would have liked a little more whipped cream. The Nutella was drizzled on the crepes but there was little or none on the inside. I had the omelette which was also good with a lot of ham. The blueberry muffin was hot and fresh and could have been the highlight of the meal. The food is great and the employees seemed to be friendly! I got the veggie eggs Benedict and coffee which were both delicious, but I must say the portion sizes seem to be small. It was unfortunate that this location is not apart of the free French toast coupon I've had sitting in my wallet! Happy the coffee is refillable and the server gave us plenty of coffee refill opportunities, for $5 is kind of expensive if you just have 1 of the small cups that they provide.
