I rarely leave negative reviews, but families deserve to know about our experience with Brookdale Brookhurst. A resident was administered 5 medications that were not prescribed to him or on his approved list. One of those medications was Oxycodone. The error was serious enough that 911 was called and he was transported to the hospital. Even after being released, he continued experiencing symptoms including drooping eyes, weakness, difficulty walking, and tingling in his legs. As upsetting as the medication error was, what happened afterward was even more shocking. When we attempted to get answers from the "Health & Wellness" Director Putri Tarigan, she displayed a complete lack of empathy and concern for the resident who had been harmed. Throughout the conversation, she was dismissive, rude, rolled her eyes, and appeared more irritated that questions were being asked than concerned about the well-being of the resident. Any family would expect compassion, accountability, and urgency in that situation. Instead, we were met with indifference. When asked who administered the medications and how such a serious error occurred, we were told that little information could be provided. There appeared to be no meaningful acknowledgment of the severity of the situation and no reassurance that steps were being taken to prevent this from happening to someone else. I left that meeting deeply disturbed by Putri Tarigan's conduct. Anyone working in senior care should demonstrate compassion, professionalism, and concern for resident safety. Unfortunately, that was not our experience, and she should NOT be working at any elderly care facility. read more

Received an invitation I could not resist. The pool contained gold fish and turtles swimming. How soothing to watch them! There were potted flowers and the whole place looked lovely. The meal was DELICIOUS with great choices. The omelet and strawberry ice cream tasted gourmet. There was even a bag of chocolate cookies at my place setting. YUM! This is the BEST senior living residence that I have been to. And, it felt like it could be "home." Thank You Brookdale for a very lovely visit! read more

This place is gross & falling apart- bathrooms smell like urine, the lights don't work in the bathroom. There's black stains all over the doors. The carpet has stains in the hallways . Very eerie feeling just standing in the building. Front desk is not friendly. Looks like no one genuinely wants to be there. I can't imagine the kind of care the elderly get here. read more

My family and I cannot say enough wonderful things about the assisted living facility of this Brookdale Location, where our loved one resides. The staff is incredibly compassionate, attentive, and dedicated to providing the best care possible. The facility itself is well-maintained, clean, and offers a warm and welcoming environment. Our loved one is thriving and happy, thanks to the personalized care and support they receive. We are grateful for the peace of mind knowing that they are in such capable hands. My mom lived here for 3 1/2 years until this past Labor Day. Let me share some facts with you: Fact #1: The sales person you speak to has nothing to do with daily living at Brookdale or your loved one. If told that someone will check on your loved one every couple of hours, will be available to assist with their room TV or the one in the Activity Room, to ensure they are wearing their glasses, to let your loved one know when "activities" they may enjoy are happening, none of it will happen during the best of times. During COVID lockdown,we had to call the front desk EVERY night to ask them to send someone to her room to turn on her TV and light. Otherwise, she and her roommate sat in darkness. Fact #2: Weekly housekeeping is the bare minimum at any time. During COVID isolation it became worse. When allowed to visit finally, we found feces on her chair, bed, and the floor, along with food crumbs growing mold. There were soiled sheets on the hamper covered in ants and only a fitted sheet and bedspread on her bed. Clean sheets were available, but unused. Fact #3: The food was not bad when my mom moved in, and the dining room was open all day with a decent variety. No matter what they say, you can no longer get a snack any time. The food is bland, boring, and tasteless. During COVID, all meals were understandably served in their rooms. There were NO choices (down from same repeated 3 they normally get in the dining room). Don't even get me started on the literal glob of cold food my mom was served for 6 months, because she was in the last wing served. Of course, they were sorry they couldn't heat it for 30 seconds in her microwave, but were "under pressure to get the dirty dishes picked up and clock out on time". Fact #4: If your loved one is self-sufficient, this place could work. But if they are self-sufficient, they really don't need it, do they? I had dinner with my mom every Wednesday before COVID (I brought my own). We met some wonderful independent residents, but they all left within 3-4 months. Those with the capacity of making their own decisions, choose to leave. Fact#5: The "activities " before COVID we're limited to the residents who are independent. Nothing was offered during COVID. During the last few weeks of isolation, my mom began to deteriorate mentally much quicker than she had been or that her hospice nurse thought she should be. She found this was primarily due to dehydration. We talked with management and the care staff consistently about hydrating, purchasing cases of bottled water weekly, but when we were finally able to get her out of there, she collapsed within a hour and was hospitalized for 3 days for severe dehydration. Fact #6: Some of the care staff had the most amazing hearts. However, they are not provided with the tools, the training, or especially the time, leaving the residents basically neglected. Shame on us for not getting my mom out of there sooner, but shame on Brookdale Brookhurst for not having the compassion and self-respect to treat their elderly residents with the care, dignity, and respect they deserve. read more

We were forced to find assisted living for my mother-in-law during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was in a nursing facility straight from emergency, so we never were able to physically see her to assess her needs. Unfortunately, she required 24/7 care and we were not able to place her at Brookdale Brookhurst. My review is for the compassionate service that we were given by Cynthia Espinoza, Lacey, and Nurse Ruby. The whole process of finding care for a loved one is difficult but trying to do it during the 'Stay at Home' order during the pandemic was nearly impossible. Lacey responded to our request for information immediately. She took us on a virtual tour of the facility and answered questions that we didn't even know we had. Cynthia was also very helpful. She coordinated everything with the nursing facility and got everything done quickly, as we were on a limited timeline. And when it was determined that my mother-in-law's condition had worsened, she went out of her way to confirm the situation, since we had little communication from the nursing facility and no way of physically seeing her. Nurse Ruby, assessed my mother-in-law and made us feel comfortable that she understood her needs. Although this facility did not work out for our needs, I feel that it would have been a great place to have a loved one. The staff seemed to be on top of the needs during the pandemic and showed genuine care for people. Thank you for helping us through this process. read more

I had my friend there for almost 5 yrs, 3 in Assisted Living and almost 2 yrs in Memory Care. when she was moved to Memory Care things started to go wrong. Gold jewelry and a gold watch went missing. Her costume jewelry like earrings also minimized. Her personal care left a lot to be desired. She was supposed to be bathed and her hair washed twice a week, which they charged for that, her hair was always oily and smelled. Her depends were not checked often enough to make sure she had not soiled herself as I personally witnessed being I literally wrung her depends and all this urine just flowed from it. They are understaffed in Memory Care and much more training is needed and required. I had labeled the drawers of her dresser to what piece of clothing went inside them. I would check the drawers and personal items like bras, socks, pajamas and other items were not where they were supposed to be, making this very frustrating. It appeared throughout the almost 2 yrs she was there, the staff really didn't care how things got done or not or even if they were done at all. If you loved your loved ones, DON'T take them there!!! read more

During my mothers stay at this facility, they controlled her medications. I had been taking care of that while she still lived in her home, which consisted of 6 pills at 8am, 4pm, 8pm and midnight. Because their schedule was to dispense every 8 hours, she was given more pills at each time. 1 prescription they stopped giving to her altogether, sometimes it would take and hour to get a pain pill. She experienced a small stroke and her behavior was very close to catatonic but no one alerted us to this. There are a lot of facilities in the area so if you are looking to place a loved one in an assisted living, I recommend reading reviews, asking people and visiting several places. I would not recommend this facility. read more

This location is HORRIBLE!! Do not send your family here and do not work here. They treat there employees like garbage and there residents even worse. They have two sides. THe assisted living side and the Memory care side. People that are worse get sent from the assisted living side to the memory care side for better care. Well thats not always true. They are supposed to go there. The director makes the doctor change the orders even though she is not a doctor. There have been residents that need to go to the memory care side but she changes the status because they will lose the money on the assisted living side. They bring people in that are actually supposed to be on hospice because they only have a week or so to live and they only bring them in because they want the money. They are not suppose to bring people in that are that far gone. This place needs to be closed down. NOt al of them are bad but they are taking over and putting other assisted living comunities out by bying them and changing the name.Why?? because they are all about $$$MONEY$$$ Get your family out now. Sunrise asisted living is amazing, put your family there. Emeritus motto is ..OUR FAMILY IS COMMITED TO YOUR...in reality there family is commited to taking your money. read more
