As a former Skilled Nursing Director, I knew it would be hard to find not just a care facility but a true community for her. She was my main concern. From the moment we arrived, we found exactly that! Danika, the Director, leads with compassion and strength. Olivia, the coordinator, brings a level of organization that made the transition feal seamless. Julie the secretary, greeted us with warmth every day. Making The Shores feel like home. Kaytlin, the activities director is slowly bringiing my non social mother back into life with her creativity and genuine joy. The employees ooze happiness with their jobs. The service is exceptional and its truly is a 5 star resort for the elderly. The menus are beyond brilliant and the food quality is a chefs kiss! The entertainment is beyond amazing, with numerous grand events to entertain family and the residents. Vivante isn't just an Assisted Living or Memory care facility. It is a touch of elegance that I am putting my name on the waiting list soon! I couldn't be happier with the care my mother is receiving. The employees go above and beyond to make each resident feel loved! I couldn't be more gratful that Vivante has walked alongside our family in such a vulnerable time! For the past five + years both our parents have been living at Vivante Newport Mesa, dad on the…read moreapartment side, and mom in The Shores where her dementia continued to progress. While what clearly was a life changing decision originally, moving into Vivante has proven time and again to be the best for both. Sadly, we lost our mom last month after an incredible fight she had been putting up for the past few years. Her last ten days truly showed us the incredible "loving care" by so many of Danica Coronel's TEAM. Now, over the years I have visited the facilities hundreds of times. I have gotten to know many of the caregivers, nurses, medtechs, servers, etc., and I have always felt good when leaving that my parents were in great hands. It is always clean and in good condition. We have enjoyed many great meals, met many residents & their families, and created some good memories (under the circumstances). Those "last ten days or so before her passing," REALLY opened my, and many of my family's eyes to the true depth of passion & caring of SO many of the Vivante staff (On the apartment side & especially in The Shores facility). From the smiling greetings by Jojo & Julie, the always positive Vince, Danica & Olivia, the incredibly joyful Alyssa (and mom Debbie), Krista, Ashlee, Elizabeth, Zoila, Jesus, Angela, Pilar, Irizella, Sara, lovely Aricelli who would make mom a nice cup of hot chocolate with a smile & warm words, to the cooks & servers, there are many more to mention. These past years have also opened my eyes to how difficult a job it is, especially to care for those with various stages/levels of dementia. The Admin staff Michelle, Desi, and all the loving kind care takers Jen, Ferdi and others provide the TLC that I require and desire for my Mom. Kelly is a wonderful communicator always updating and informing me of any cocerns she has with my 89 year old Beautiful Mom. Mom has lived there for the past 2 wonderful years. Mom was recently hospitalized for 6 days and Kelly showed up at the hospital 2 days to support me and my mom through her recovery. Each resident is handled with specialty care that meets the residents needs, socialization is supported and encouraged, healthy home cooked meals are consumed around a dinner table and they have appropriate exercises for each residents ability. They celebrate birthdays and holidays that are fun. As a Daughter who is also a RN I can honestly say "Living at Ocean Breeze is the BEST gift I could ever give my mom!" When the ambulance transporters dropped my mom off yesterday after her hospital stay the men said " we've never seen a board and care facility like this" They also asked if they could make their own reservation to be a resident there 30 years down the road. From the moment I walked in, the environment was welcoming and well cared for, which made a strong first impression. What stood out most was the sense of community. There were so many activities planned for residents, and it was clear that staff put real thought into keeping everyone engaged, connected, and supported. It didn't feel like a typical facility it felt like a place where people can genuinely feel comfortable, at home, and cared for. I want to shout out the administrator, Kelly, who clearly cares deeply about the well-being of both the residents and the staff. It was evident by the atmosphere in the facility.

Cost of living here increased a bit but it's still more affordable than some of the other comparable communities.

Nikki and Mandi have been personally involved every step of the way. They have helped us find caregivers who are the right fit for my mom and our family, helped us understand the process as her needs have changed, and have always been there to troubleshoot or find backup support when we need it. They are highly responsive and move quickly when something comes up. Most importantly, we have always felt that Nikki and her team care about our mom as a person, not simply as a client.  Their dedication and attention to detail directly translates into the quality of the caregivers they have found to work with our mom.

Carmel Village is an acceptable place for seniors who are still fairly independent and only need…read moreminimal assistance, meals, and basic housekeeping. However, once a resident requires a higher level of care, our experience was extremely disappointing. My mom lived at Carmel Village for two years. During the last four months of her life, as her care needs increased, the quality of care declined significantly. While Carmel Village charged additional fees for every added service--which we understood and expected--the care that was promised was not the care that was provided. One of the biggest concerns was the call button service. We were told that staff strive to respond within 10 minutes, whether a resident needed help picking up a dropped remote or had fallen. During the first two weeks after my mom began using this service, she regularly waited 20, 30, and sometimes 45 minutes for someone to respond. We met with Ruby from the office, who apologized, said she would address the issue with staff, and even told us she would personally respond if it ever exceeded eight minutes. Unfortunately, we never saw that commitment reflected in what actually happened. 2 months later, after my mom returned from the hospital on hospice, the problems became even more serious. Carmel Village charged us a fee for coordinating with our outside hospice provider, but we repeatedly found ourselves reminding staff when medications or supplies were running low because many caregivers seemed unfamiliar with hospice procedures. My mom was bedridden and had physician's orders to be repositioned every two hours to prevent pressure sores, yet there were many times when my sister and I were there for hours without anyone coming in to turn her. We also found ourselves constantly correcting mistakes involving meals and medications. My mom remained mentally sharp until the very end of her life, and it was heartbreaking to watch her concerns be dismissed even though she was often correct. Instead of being able to spend our time simply being daughters, my sister and I had to be at Carmel Village every day for several hours just to make sure our mom received the care she needed. During the final three weeks of her life, we had already begun making plans to move her to elsewhere because the situation had become so concerning. We also involved the Long-Term Care Ombudsman and held weekly meetings with the Carmel Village director, Mandy, and her staff in hopes of improving communication and resolving ongoing issues. Unfortunately, many of the same concerns continued from week to week, and Mandy often responded as though she were hearing about them for the first time, It became she is very out of touch about what really goes on in the rooms of the residents compared to what she THINKS the Med Techs and Caregivers are actually doing. We observed it all first-hand by sitting in my mom's room for hours every day. Choosing an assisted living facility is one of the most important decisions a family can make. Based on our experience, Carmel Village may be suitable for someone who only needs minimal assistance, but I cannot recommend it for anyone who requires significant daily care or hospice support. The promises made did not match the care my mom actually received, and I would not trust Carmel Village with the care of a loved one whose needs extend beyond basic assisted living.
