Yes, dumplings are a little pricey -- but they're substantial and thoughtfully done. The mac & cheese dumplings? Massive. Comfort chaos in the best way. The Thai curry dumplings are ehh -- flavorful, but not balanced, less memorable than the standouts. The apple fritters (they call them apple dumplings) are fun and indulgent -- unexpected and playful. But the real star? The shrimp bao buns. Michelin-quality level execution. Perfect texture, flavor layering, beautiful balance. At $12, they're expensive for a bao -- but absolutely worth it. Zero hesitation would scarf down again. I live very close by and I have NEVER seen anyone one in there except the guy who works there who was playing on his phone. Brooklyn Dumpling Shop is a fun little shop. It's an dumpling automat themed shop. When you walk in your order from a digital kiosk. You wait for your food to be prepared, then when available they come out of the cubby in the automat. If you want something quick and aren't in the mood to to anyone it's good because it's free of human interaction. They open till 10 pm and have a bar with beers and wine. I wish it was open later. This is something that would be cool after a late night. I wish I could give a higher rating, but the dumplings are meh and are small portions for the price. The first time I got the vegan dumplings which didn't have much flavor. The second time I got the Mac and cheese dumplings which tasted like stoffers Mac and cheese inside a dumplings. Absolutely amazing menu - perfectly balanced with classic dumplings and new twists. You have to try the Peking duck, Korean bbq, and mac & cheese (ask for the hot honey!). I like the decor of the small shop. The outdoor seatings are nice with a few tables and a lounge chair. Inside there are a few bar stools with a ledge table. This is pretty much self-serve. No human interaction needed, unless you have an issue. 1 staff is there in the back. You order at the kiosk. It gives you a receipt with a barcode on it. Look at the e-board to the right side above the automats (they look like lockers). Find your name and wait for it to say ready. If you scan before then, it will say not ready anyways. When it says ready, scan your receipt barcode, it will tell you the locker number and then that locker will slowly open for you to take your food out. Voilà. Enjoy your food. I had the pork dumplings in broth. That was delicious. Yum yum. Not too spicy. My favorite for dumplings. It is about $9 for 5 dumplings in the soup. It had some rice at the bottom. It is filling, especially since I drank all the soup. That is a meal for me, but if you wanted to try a few types of dumplings, you can share with a friend. I've also tried their fried dumplings, but frankly I don't like crispy fried dumplings. The insides were flavorful, but I'm not totally converted. They have multiple locations, but the Upper East Side one just opened in June. It's easy to either order through their website or from the kiosk at the restaurant. The food is ready quickly and placed in these nifty lockers. I've tried both the Pork & Cabbage Potstickers (dumplings) and the Spicy Pork Soup Dumplings. The Spicy Pork Soup Dumplings were my favorite. They have so much flavor! The combo is a good deal. I LOVE the waffle fries! Fair warning: Little to no customer service aspect. If you need something after you've closed out your order it's not easy to get a staff members attention in the back. I understand this quick serve concept, but it's just a little odd. There are a handful of banquettes inside and tables out side. The order kiosks and lockers are in the center of the room. There are no extra napkins, straws, etc available to self serve. They use single use plastic products and don't have recycling bins. I found the peanut noodles to be next to tasteless- nothing peanut about it. The crispy pork dumplings were good but did not come with any sauce not even soy sauce. Honestly, I'd pick another dim sum or Asian restaurant over this. I'm not sure if I'll return. read more

Great Addition to the UES. My four year old loves dumplings so we decided in this place before we head to the library around the corner. We ordered at the kiosk and while we waited an employee gave him a sticker and paper and crayons to draw. Picking up our order at the automat was so cool my toddler scanned the bar code and waited for the tiny doors to open and he grabbed his food. The kids meal comes with a savory and sweet option, waffle fries, an apple juice and real plastic beginners chop sticks for 10$! The packaging was super cute and easy to take to go. Excellent new addition to the UES! Welcome to the neighborhood. Step up to the machines, order the dumplings and then sit back until your order arrives in the automat. Shop is relatively small but there is counter seating on the inside and seats set up outside. I tried the Kung Pao Chicken dumplings and thoroughly enjoyed them. Was stoked when I saw this place was coming to our neighborhood. I've been a few times and haven't been disappointed. I've tried some of the Interesting specialty dumplings - Mac and Cheese, Korean BBQ, Lamb Gyro, and Buffalo Chicken. Truly one of the worst meals I've eaten in a very long time. Everything is poorly seasoned and poorly cooked. And I tried lots of items. The best thing was probably the crispy shrimp. We tried the noodles, the steamed and seared dumplings, as well as the dumplings in soup all unbelievably bad. The chicken parm dumpling tasted like a worse pizza roll, lol. I would give it a 1 because again some of the worst food I've eaten, but I kinda feel bad dumping on a new restaurant that didn't do anything wrong besides just being terrible. A great burger and great food for the price. Will be coming here often. Service was quick and fast. Good music choice and a good location.

So this place opened and was great but no matter how many times I have been this place ever single time including tonight. They screw up our order every single time. We started ordering smaller orders hoping they would get it right sure enough the screwed up the order. I wish they would just pay attention to our order. Tonight we ordered Reuben dumplings and we got Mac and cheese not sure how that is the same. Was, so looking forward to this place. I am disappointed. The few things I tried were adequate. Not great not bad. For me one of the biggest problem is it is too hot to sit outside and the air-conditioning inside is almost nonexistent. The other problem is the customer does all the work! You order on a screen. To find prices you have to look up, really look up to the price list on the top of the ovens .T here are no prices on takeout menus. After you order you have to pay by credit card!!! You cannot use cash!!! (I don't like putting my credit card out there and I don't like charging for a seven dollar order of dumplings.) After you get all this done, you also have to give your phone number! You are standing right there in a very small space you can see when your order comes through. They taut grab and go. One of the things that does not travel well are dumplings. So eating them there would be better. They have been open a few weeks now and I don't see where there has been any improvement in making it customer friendly. Though, you as a customer, do all the work you get no paycheck at the end of the week! :-) read more
