The dumplings here are so delicious and flavorful. The food is good, the seating areas are kind of clean, and the staff was helpful. I had the basil and chicken fried dumplings and the wontons with spicy sauce with shrimp and chicken. Everything was delicious but my favorites were the wontons with spicy sauce with shrimp and chicken. The ginger honey iced tea was so good. I will be getting it when I come back. The only reason it's 4 stars is because the tables were dirty. They didn't have enough staff to help customers and clean tables once people left. Hopefully it will be cleaner next time. read more

A great alternative to Din Tai Fung without all the hassle. The beef noodles were so satisfying on a cold winter day: tender pieces of beef so flavorful with a peppery broth and vegetables. I asked for the noodles on the side not too soft and they didn't do a good job of not cooking the noodles too much. Even though the noodles were on the soft side, I was hungry and ate the whole bowl. I also got some frozen dumplings to go, which I cooked later in my house. I also bought the cucumbers and kimchi. All worth the money. read more

Used to be on E 14st in manhattan, I ordered the Boiled Chicken and chives dumplings...the color looks different last time I ordered them. A bit water . And chewy. The kitchen is in da back. W/ The cashier in front of them .. you can order through the kiosk or at the cashier! It's definitely more expensive for the food here ! There is plenty of space here for small groups to seat at! Vanessa's on 14th was my go-to for cheap, delicious, vegetarian-friendly dinner as a broke college student, and 15 years later I'm glad the business has been able to adapt and grow. It's no longer dirt cheap, but still affordable ($8-12 per dish) and made to order. This location, on the Upper East Side, is clean, well lit, and has plenty of seating. Order and pay at the kiosk and pick up your food at the counter when they call your name. The vegan beef dumplings are a surprising crowd pleaser, and the sesame pancake sandwiches are as good as ever. The bubble teas aren't anything special but are not bad. read more

Honestly, I would give it a 2.5 out of nostalgia. When they first opened up they were really good and cordial. You could always expect the food to be good and tasty but for the past year or so the quality of the food has been a "good luck" with what you get and hope it's good this time. I normally take things for takeout and order through the screen they have in front of the cashier so that I don't have to bother them with any silly question. Yesterday I went to have a bite at 9:20. Keeping in mind that they were closing at 10pm, we did everything possible to ensure we were done before then. However, at 9:43 an employee asked to take out our sauces from the table, when we were still clearly not done with our food-- which all required soy sauce for better flavor. I didn't took offense to it and graciously handed it to him but at 9:50pm the same employee yelled out to the only 2 people that were there that they were "closed". Still 10 minutes until they're official closing time. I said "thank you" while cleaning the table and waiting for the person who was with me to finish 3 dumplings. The employee began to aggressively mop and slam chairs around in a clear state of anger. I've worked in the service customer industry since I was like 4 years old. This is not the way to keep customers at a restaurant that can't keep up food quality and keep getting hit with health violations. I used to go every week, currently I go every few months-- now I think I'll make it twice a year and I would have to crave them like crazy. Used to be a fan. read more

This was a somewhat disappointing experience. We have been hearing great things about this dumpling spot so we thought we'd try it out. Food: The dumplings were okay. I found them to be under seasoned and they tasted somewhat premade which was sad. We've been to so many dumpling places so this just felt disappointing. The dumplings were also colder than they should have been, we dined in, so that didn't make sense. The dumplings dough was also very thick so the filling taste didn't come through that well. We tried their steam bun, it's pretty big but there was way too much bun and not enough filling. I had to take at least 3-4 bites before I got to any part of the filling. The only food item I enjoyed was the sesame veggie pancake sandwich. It came out hot and tasted like it was made fresh. The crust was perfectly cooked and crispy and the filling was the perfect amount. Price: Our total for 2 dumplings, 1 bun, and 1 sandwich came out to more than $50. This just felt high especially for such a casual spot. Ambiance: The place is a more grab and go spot. They do have tables there so you can sit and eat if you like. On a recent afternoon, I made my first visit to Vanessa's Dumpling House, a name that floats easily through the streets of NYC. The spot, which has grown into something of a mini chain with several locations across the city highlights itself as a reliable destination for fast, affordable dumplings. But as I found during my visit, affordability and quality don't always keep pace. I ordered the chicken pan-fried dumplings and the spicy beef dumplings. And while they arrived quickly, the excitement tapered after the first few bites. The balance between dumpling wrapper to filling was not great. The reliance of chili oil was necessary to give them some flavor. At $7 to $9 for a small plate, this wouldn't be an issue if the dumplings punched above their weight. But in a city where $1 dumplings from shops in Flushing or Chinatown can still deliver, Vanessa's starts to feel overpriced. One can't help but suspect the markup is attributed to the zip code than to the dumplings themselves. Let's end with the atmosphere. This Vanessa's location is unmistakably casual (counter service with a bright, somewhat basic interior) with just enough seating to keep things functional. It's a fast casual concept in spirit, which makes it a fine choice for a quick weekday bite, but dinner? Not quite unless you plan to take-out. I had always been meaning to try this place, and I finally got the chance when my boyfriend and I were looking for a place to eat on St. Patrick's day. Since all of the Irish pubs we wanted to try were full to the brim, we went here and had an absolutely fantastic dinner... the meal was totally superior to all that greasy pub fare (on their busiest day of the year) in terms of quality, price, and flavor!! We got three orders of fried dumplings to share: pork and chive (white), chicken and basil (pink), and vegetable (green). All three were ready literally in seconds; as soon as we sat down in a booth we immediately stood back up to get them at the counter. Also the true sign of a legitimate dumpling house... the dark soy and vinegar dipping sauce on the tables in repurposed sriracha bottles!! The dumplings themselves were exactly what I was craving. Both of us gobbled up the classic pork and chive, but honestly my favorite was the chicken and basil dumpling. That flavor combination was really delicious, and the subtle taste of ginger in it made me nostalgic for one of my favorite childhood meals- that chopped up roast chicken and green sauce you get at Chinese markets. Altho' not as cheap (vs years ago)...they're still quite affordable & consistently yummy (thicker-skinned) Boiled Veggie, Basil & Chicken or Fried Pork & Chive Dumplings, Steamed Veggie Buns, MUST-TRY Chicken or Beef Sesame Pancakes + MY GO-TO's when I'm sick: White-meat Chicken Udon Soup Noodles or Chicken & Shrimp Wonton Soup w/ a bit of bok choy...everything just like I remember from the OG C'Town & (RIP) E 14th St shops! Just remember to order a side of steamed bok choy if you're jonesing for more veggies & don't forget to ask for extra dumpling sauce, try a lychee smoothie &, if you have freezer space at home, grab the "cheaper" 25-pc frozen dumpling bag to go! My first visit and no complaints. Food is incredibly fresh, and the peanut sauce on the homemade dumplings has a lovely gravy-light texture. The noodles are a texture-heaven balance of firm and light. Vanessa advertises her dumplings, of which the chicken and basil was yummo. The dough is just slightly doughy and the amply filled. Service was polite and timely given that I ordered hot noodles with the dumplings and the tables clean. Only 2 people when I walked in but by noon the place was bustling with walking and takeout. I used to love the duck sandwich but it is always served lukewarm here and they really skimp on the fillings. Dumplings are okay but those are hard to mess up. Had the chance to try this place a couple days ago. I was pleasantly surprise to have very good quality food for a very affordable price, specially in the UES. Went there around midday to place an order to go, however if you want to eat there they have a couple of tables, the decor and interior design is simple but beautiful. I tried the fried pork and chives dumplings, the steamed dumplings the variety plate (4 flavors) the shrimp wonton soup and the sesame pancake with beef. Everything was good but my favorite was the sesame pancake and the fried dumplings. The pancake could have been warmer though but the flavor and size was really good. Staff was friendly and offered free sodas with my purchase, service is a bit slow but nothing crazy and I think they could use some help with someone cleaning the tables more often, other than that I think is a great place to eat well for a few bucks. Both the Fried and Boiled Dumplings did stick together so the skin would break apart and the meat inside was small. They were still tasty and satisfied my cravings. I also liked the Hot & Sour Soup as it was flavorful with a good amount of egg drop, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and tofu. Would have been great if it also came with fried wontons strips for added texture. The Spicy Beef Dan Dan Noodles ($9.88) and Wontons in Spicy Sauce ($8.88) were good options to try and were flavorful. I also tried the Steamed Cabbage & Pork Bun ($2.68) but did not like it much. The bun was a bit cardboard-y and the meat was small and not juicy. The Steamed Bok Choy in Soy Sauce ($7.88) was ok, but I wanted some veggies to go with my dumplings. Notes: I came twice; once during grand opening and another a week later, both times for dinner. The first experience was insanely hectic. The takeout wait was at least an hour, which they shared ahead of time. They did get some orders wrong and workers did yell at each other. But, I had to give them a second chance since that was grand opening day. The second time was much smoother, and it took 30 mins for takeout. They seemed more organized and didn't have a long line. I think the prices are fair and portions are decent for a tasty meal. They also have Boba, which is great for the UES since there are not many places that sell it in this neighborhood. read more

There are multiple locations and the place had people eating there but I just didn't really like the food and would likely not get it again unless I just had no other choice I ordered the mixed dumplings, pork and chive dumplings, the ones that are not really dumplings but plan fried on the bottom with pork inside (not sure in English, Chinese sheng jian bao), vegetable baozi and pork bao zi, and the peanut noodles cold style The best thing they had was the shrimp dumplings. The other dumplings are just nothing special in my opinion. The vegetable bao was totally bland. The pork bao was like 95% bread with some empty space and then some small amount of pork. The peanut noodles, just ok, not much flavor Oh one good thing is that it was cheap. Super affordable place for dumplings in UES. We only tried the pan fried chive & pork, and the boiled cabbage & pork, plus a small wonton soup. The wonton soup was surprisingly good, so would recommend that (we tried spinach & mushroom). The pan fried dumplings were tasty, though a tad on the salty side even without adding any sauces. The boiled dumplings were great as well. All in all, it is not the best dumplings in the world, but they are fast and super affordable. It is mostly a takeout place, as they do have some seating, everybody that was in the store was doing takeout when I stopped by (about 5-6 parties). We didn't try their noodles this time around, but I imagine they're pretty decent as well. The indoor looks very nice since it is a pretty new place. They include the dumpling sauce in takeout orders, so no need to add your own. The items come out super super hot, so be careful when handling the containers! Honestly I was so hungry I could have eaten anything when I walked in. Are these dumplings the best in their class? No. Do they hit the spot on a day when you're craving dumplings? Absolutely. I ended up ordering the fried chive and pork dumplings, the boiled chicken & basil dumplings, a plain sesame pancake, and a coconut bubble milk tea. Again, if you're hungry, these will 100% do the trick. The skin is a bit tough, and the pan fried dumplings don't have that crunch that you look for in a fried dumpling (I'd actually recommend the boiled dumplings over the fried ones. I found that those were much juicier than the fried ones.) I was hoping the sesame pancake would have more of a scallion pancake feel to them, but it was more bready and thick than a scallion pancake usually is. It was good starch, but lacked flavor. I had insanely low expectations for the boba, but it was edible! The coconut milk tea was definitely on the watery side, but it had solid flavor. The boba was softer than I'd like, but listen I'm not going to be picky since this is clearly a dumpling house, not a boba shop. I will say that it wasn't filled to the top when I got it. My friends opted for fruit teas and yakult drinks, and those seemed to fare better than the milk teas. read more

The service is fine and inside seating is good and clean but the food isn't great. The best thing to get here would probably be the vegan option when comparing to other Chinese dumpling places. The beef pancake tastes very different to most places,as the bread is more like normal bread and the beef isn't flavored nicely with the vegetables inside.I couldn't go past eating one of the spicy beef boiled dumpling. The fried chicken dumpling was ok but oily and you're gonna have to buy some chili oil to eat it with.The chili oil was ok and helps to eat the other stuff. The quality here used to be much better in taste years ago,as many places the taste has dropped over the past few years.
