It would be inhuman to leave a dog in a car in our hot temperatures even for 5 minutes. I thought all his signs about no cell phone and CHL were him being clever or funny until I experienced him and he's not clever, just a dude on a territorial parking lot space trip. I am a Yankee transplant living in Cypress and a huge Texas BBQ fan. I love to BBQ myself and have had great BBQ like Aaron Franklin's in Austin and also plenty of terrible BBQ so I don't hand out 5 star ratings to just anyone but Brooks' Place deserves one. I took my fiance and her friend from Wisconsin out for lunch this afternoon as I didn't have time to do a cook myself but wanted to make sure she got a genuine Texas BBQ experience while she was down here. Brooks was the perfect choice! We ordered 1 lb of point brisket and 1/4 lb from the flat as well as 1 l/b of ribs, some deer sausage, and a few sides. As we got our food, Mr. Brooks came out and thanked us for coming out on such a cold morning and to chat about what brought us to his establishment and to make sure we were enjoying his food. We probably chatted for 15 min about BBQ, cook offs he was involved in, where we were from, just the usual banter that comes along with a great BBQ joint. He was very courteous and polite and we now have some great cook offs to visit next year. The BBQ was on point! (pun intended) Brisket is the true test of a pit master's skill and Trent cooked ours to perfection, the point that I ordered was moist and tender, pulling apart perfectly. It was sliced to 1/4 inch, had a perfect smoke ring and classic Texas style dark crust, I didn't ask him what he used in his rub but I would guess it was most likely a standard salt and pepper central Texas style. I believe he was using Oak and the smoke flavor was not to overpowering. My fiance had the 1/4 lb of brisket from the flat since she likes the leaner cuts, it was sliced to 1/8 inch and she had nothing but positive feedback to provide, both she and her friend were both extremely satisfied with their brisket. The ribs were also cooked in central Texas fashion, the rub was either the same as used on the brisket or very similar. They were not over cooked to the point where the meat would all just slide off the bone, it was once again a pull off the bone tender which is the perfect target for ribs. They provided some sauces with our meal but no one even bothered to open them, the natural flavors of the meat were too good to cover up with sauce! The deer sausage was also excellent, I don't get all that worked up over sausage since it doesn't require the skill that good brisket does but I can say that it had a good blend of smoke and spice, I think Trent may have added some jalapeno to give it a little extra kick. The ladies ordered a few sides, the only one I tried was the Bacon Onion Potatoes and they were excellent. I always get nervous about taking people out to a BBQ joint for their first taste of Texas style BBQ if I haven't vetted the place myself as I want to make sure they have a great experience. If you are like me in that regard, have no fear, Brooks' Place will not let you down. My fiances friend said it was the best meal she's ever had and it wasn't just about the food, it's about ordering from a trailer in a parking lot, sitting at a picnic table with your food coming to you in brown paper bags, chatting with the pit master while eating, and then going into a BBQ coma afterwards that completes the whole experience. As someone who makes pilgrimages to the great central Texas BBQ joints such as Franklin, Snow's, and the Lockhart joints, I can say that Brooks deserves its place in the Texas Monthly Top 50. I was so excited to discover a top flight barbecue joint in Houston, and Brooks does it right. Whether you want fall-apart brisket or perfectly flavored pork ribs, you can't do much better than Brooks. The sides are fine, but who cares? This is barbecue! A barbecue joint bragging about its sides is like a sports car dealership bragging about its cup holders. It may take some time to get your food as there is often a line, and Brooks cuts all the meet himself, as it should be. Brooks does it right. Barbecue is about waiting and anticipation. If you want fast food, go to McDonalds. However, you can call in your order or order online, which helps speed things up if you need it faster. So, so good. read more

Like many other people, we first heard about Brooks' when the Chronicle and Press wrote about the trouble Dunkin' was giving them--since we like BBQ and hate corporate foolishness, we decided to give them a shot. Glad we did--their brisket is OUTSTANDING, literally the best I've ever had! But be warned, it's pricey--we got two 1/2 lb lean brisket sandwiches, two 1/4 lb orders of sausage and a small side of baked beans, and it was over $49. As I parked Megumi, my black Acura TL, I could smell the smoke. Back of a pick up truck there were some logs. By the foot of the trailer was a propane tank and a torch. In the trailer itself was a barrel drum pit. I knew I was in for some serious BBQ. Although Texas is known for barbecue, Houston isn't particularly known for BBQ. Biggest city in Texas only generated 5 out of the top 50 in the state. Arguably only 2 of them are in the city limits. Brooks' place is in Cypress. For a South of the Loop guy like myself working in Downtown or in Southwest, this would be destination barbecue. As everyone has said, it's a simple trailer, with 2 picnic tables in the front. Over the tables there were 2 tarps to keep the sun off. The trailer itself look split between the smoker area and the prep/money area. Ambiance - Side of the road BBQ pit = perfect Service - Mr. Brooks gave me a kindly nod. I spoke all of 2 words with the kid running the register. Food this good doesn't really need much verbalizing. $ - 3 meat plate + Dr. Pepper - could feed 2 people honestly, but 20 bucks. I knew that I wouldn't be around these parts for some time, so I figured i'd go whole hog (or in this case, whole cow). The Sides - Baked Beans - flavorful and nice - Garlic potatoes - I was really looking forward to this, but they were cooked a bit hard. The garlic, pepper, and other spices came through, but the some of them taters were a bit chewy. - The Pork Ribs - I think they snuck in 4 ribs. Each was swell smoked and succulent. But it's pork. The Main Course - Sausage - Nice well smoked sausage with a casing with a great snap to it. Prolly about half a link. Very good - Brisket - As others have mentioned, they cut the brisket thick. In comparison, i'd say that country store with a few spots around town cuts their brisket to less than 1/4 inch, Brooks is somewhere closer to 1/2 inch. The Bark was barking. Didn't suffer like it does at lotta places. Well seasoned. Smoke ring? Prolly a good 1/4 inch into the meat. Quality Moisture - I always order moist brisket, and it was definitely moist. Some fine BBQ to be had here! Very well deserving of its Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ stature! And despite that, the lines are still short and still a nice secret for quick quality 'cue...for now... This place can be a bit hard to find. It's a food truck in the Kroger shopping center. First time I was here, I was the only one there. It's a tiny food truck and you can see the pit clearly in the back. Ordered brisket and sausages. Food comes out very quickly. The brisket was very moist and very tender. Great bark, nice smoke ring, just excellent. The sausages has a nice snap casing and great smoky flavor. Didn't need sauce, but tastes great with the tangy stuff. By the way, drinks here are free! Granted they're canned drinks, but sweet tea or fruit punch goes great with anything, esp when it's free lol. The owner/pitmaster, Trent, is very nice. If he's not busy he'll hangout and chat with you. Been at it for 4 years and I'm guessing he'll do this for many more years with his quality 'cue. Been here a few times since. Ribs here are pretty good and smoky. Tender but not quite fall-off-the-bone tender. When the brisket is spot-on, it's excellent. But there are times when it's not as consistent and the brisket is just a bit dry and ok. I still prefer Killen's and Corkscrew, but if you're tired of waiting in line for an hour or have a short lunch hour, this place is it! I've never had to wait longer than 5 minutes. What's there to say about a bbq place that's ran out of a trailer, in a parking lot? Nothing, because I was busy stuffing my mouth with delicuous food! The ribs and sausage are amazing. Ribs in particular, whatever he rubs on these bad boys will keep you coming back for more. You could clean the bone without any effort at all, I'm sure a good shake would make the meat come right off the bone. Good service is the first thing I noticed. Friendly people, and prompt service. They take credit cards also, so just in case you don't get enough you can order the value meal for 5 people...that should suffice. Quality BBQ. I like Carolina style BBQ mostly, and am not really into the greasy brisket available through much of TX, so I wax excited when I saw that he sometimes has pulled pork sandwiches here. With the coleslaw topping and some sauce, these are DIVINE. The turkey legs are pretty awesome as well. I'm not as much of a fan of the brisket, probably because I just don't like brisket, but my husband loves it. We have tried most of the sides and like them all. Even my four year old likes this food. I find the prices to be just a little steep compared to some other local BBQ places, especially because this is a trailer where you get your food to go. After reading about Brooks Place in Texas Monthly, I've been dying to try their BBQ. I sent hubby to pickup meat for dinner. Like a good man, he brought home sausage, brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. He got beans as a side just to humor me. The pulled pork is juicy and delicious. I'm not usually a big sausage fan, but loved this one. Not to spicy or peppery, and juicy with a crispy outside. LOVE! The brisket was sliced thickly but that isn't a problem when it basically falls apart from tenderness. Lastly the ribs, crisp outside and yummy, tender inside. The baked beans were usual for me. They were sweet but had a mustardy flavor that gave them a little kick. Different in a good way. The sauce had the same flavor so they may be related. The place is in a trailer in a parking lot near the Ace Hardware and Krogers. As my college kid would say, it is so sketch, but not really. Food trucks and trailers are all the rage. On a recent trip to Austin we tried to try some of the other places on the list and many were trailers/trucks and each had run out of meat early in the afternoon. When you understand the concept that these type of place cook a certain amount of meat and that's it. When they smoke the meat as long as they do, they are about quality. I notice that the prices went up about a dollar for the meat since the Texas Monthly article and I say good for you! I'd rather pay good money for good food than pay less for mediocre food. I've been to brooks several times now and it has been pretty good. The moist brisket and pulled pork are by far the best thing here. In my opinion the sausage and ribs leave more to be desired. Brooks is an extremely nice guy and enjoys meeting his customers. The food is pretty steep and some things could use a little bit of a price drop. After 2 reschedules, some co-workers and I finally had a chance to check out this place for lunch. You know Mr Brook's has to make some good BBQ if he can attract customers to this far inland away from a big freeway. I had the lean brisket, sausage with beans and garlic potatoes. The brisket was the clear standout and even though it's lean, it has some fat on the edge to keep the flavor and moistness up but easily cut out if chewing it, "ain't your thang." (It's not mine.) The surprise was the beans which were the best baked beans I've ever had at a BBQ place. They were slightly sweet, smoky but with good layers of spice and depth. The garlic potatoes weren't anything that memorable so I will have to try the potato salad next time. Thanks to Yelp hubby and I knew what to look for when we wanted to try this little BBQ joint. Sitting in the Ace Hardware parking lot, it's no more than a smoker with a picnic table or two. We read the reviews and our bellies begged us to go. Heaven help us...I had the half chicken with green beans and cole slaw and hubs got ribs, sausage, green beans and garlic potatoes. Eating this food made me grateful to be pregnant again because I got to stuff my face full of amazing wonderful BBQ. I'm normally a Spring Creek girl, but not anymore! The chicken fell off the bone and was juicy and filling. Sausage was a lovely peppery smoky flavor, ribs were tender and smoky as well. I could eat their green beans everyday for the rest of my life - vinegar-y, onion and some Italian dressing hints. The cole slaw was crisp and just a hint of sweet and the potatoes had a lovely crunchy skin. I liked how different heir sauce tasted too - it was a lovely compliment with a vinegar base and not too sweet. Poor hubby, I ate all of mine and most of his. I can't wait to go back. Summary- Just OK barbeque, I agree with some other reviewers that it's overrated on Yelp. Food- 3 Stars Pretty good sliced brisket but nothing over the top. Ribs were straight up tough although once you chewed into them the flavor was good. The sausage was flavorful as well but dried out. Sides were good overall. I really like the Okra salad, which is unusual and was delicious. Service- 4 Stars Super friendly and fast. Atmosphere- 3 Stars It's a truck in a hardware store parking lot with some benches. I was with a bunch of (Kansas City-ers, Kansas Cittyians? Kansas Cityities?) people from Kansas City and an assortment of people from the South--all claiming that their respective home state is the BBQ capital of the world, and everyone was impressed by all of the meat. I kept hearing "I'm such a BBQ snob that I normally don't touch the brisket, but this is amazing!" As other yelpers have mentioned, this place is in the parking lot of an ACE hardware, and it's just a little trailer hooked up to a generator on a truck. Only one person working this entire The brisket is so delicious -- tender and smoky. No sauce is really needed, but Brooks' Place does provide it. The sausage is also out of this world with a really lovely spice to it. Macaroni salad, potato salad, baked beans, and soft white bread completed a delectable meal. I do now..and you should too. I picked up some ribs, brisket, chicken and potatoes. Lets start with the brisket, champion of BBQ. It was very tender, had a little smokiness to it and a nice crust (a key to great brisket). It's probably the best I have had in Houston. Ribs were nice and tender, not super flavorful. Chicken was excellent, moist and smoky. The "hot" potatoes were not that hot or good. While the sides were subpar, the meat was on point. EAT HERE. Dont let the small appearance fool you, this place has big flavor. Ordered the 2 meat special, brisket/sausage with potato salad & black eyed peas...good LAAAWD. The brisket had a nice crispy bark, while the inside was so juicy it kept breaking and falling off my fork. The sausage had GREAT snap, but was also juicy, but not "fatty". I assume their BBQ sauce is homemade and a guarded secret, but damn, it was good. Great portions! The 3 meat plate was enough for 2 for about $18 after taxes. Went during lunch on a Tues and it was about a 5min wait. Had the moist brisket and it wasn't as fatty as I'd prefer. We had to drench our food in the BBQ sauce to eat it. The sauce was tart. The garlic "mash" potatoes, was spicy hot and over bearing basil taste. The potatoes were not mashed, they are cubed. I have eaten barbecue at just about every "famous" smokehouse in the great state of Texas (some of my favorites include: The Salt Lick, Prause Meat Market, and Kreuz Market). Mr. Brooks' barbecue ranks up there with some of the best (and definitely one of the best in the Houston area). I ordered my brisket moist with extra bark...I was not disappointed. I am not a big fan of barbecue sauces, but the sauce at Brooks' Place is delicious. The bottom line is that the barbecue at this place is a great example of East Texas barbecue: smokey, moist and flavorful. I'm sad to say I've never been here in the few years I've lived nearby. I'm lived in Texas all my life and I eat bbq occasionally, like a few times a month, but ive had plenty of bbq from all over, and I'm putting this as the number one best BBQ I've ever had just based off my brisket litmus test. Smokey, salty, that perfect bark, but incredibly moist, I tried it first by itself and that alone blew me away with incredible flavor and its high quality. For years I've been craving that perfect charred tip (bark) flavor with tons of moisture like I see on all these tv shows, and never have been satisfied until now. I'm so excited about this discovery that I've stopped in the middle of eating it to write this. I'll try other things later, but the most important part is the bark for me. The bbq sauce is perfectly sweet and only mildly spicy, good combo. Is it sad that I am eating the tiniest pieces of char still left on their foil wrap? It's a big trailer with plenty of covered picnic tables, very clear and obvious menu, price wise: let's just say I'd pay anything for the best (hindsight), so at first I stood there forever trying to analyze the cheapest deal but in the end went with a few types of meats instead of trying what looked like spectacular sides that came with 'plates', I'll get to that some other time. Price looked about average compared to other joints I've tried which is great for me since that makes this place a steal for the quality you get! I did remember thinking I could get 4 of those banh mi sandwiches across the street for 1/2 lb of this meat, but what their menu didn't mention was u can get 2 pieces of bread per 1/4 lb and a big cup of BBQ sauce too, so essentially I get 4 (or 2 big) sandwiches out of this, the same as the Vietnamese tea shop (but just too diff to compare anyway) and best of the best meat anywhere.
