It has been a while since we've tried the Barrio in Brookside but decided for carry-out last night! We opted for the tacos and the chicken enchiladas.... 25 minutes to pick-up. We arrived on time and our food was waiting. Super happy with that! Prices are a bit high but not unusual for locally owned in Brookside. Food was hot and packaged up nicely. Was unfortunately disappointed. I appreciate the open air concept, however with it getting down to the low 40's tonight, it made for a very uncomfortable dining experience, even if we were seated indoors. Service was slow. It took a while for someone to come by to take drink orders, it took a while for us to be served chips and salsa, and it took even longer for someone to take our food orders. I opted for the surf and turf kebabs with beans instead of elote. Chips and salsa were decent, I loved that the chips were well seasoned. I'm not sure if it was because the dining area was unheated, open air, and likely in the 50's, but my food came out.... cold. The steak was overdone, chewy, and quite difficult to cut with my butter knife. The entire entree lacked salt and seasoning. It was a fine meal, but nothing stood out. Food and drink were amazing. I got the fajitas and OG margaritas. That iron skillet was putting on a show! Loved it. Chips and salsa were hot and fresh. Service was fast and friendly. Music was 2000's rap (Eminem, eve, lil Troy). I love that music and know all the lyrics, but I wonder if something would be more fitting. The vibe with the outdoor patio (which is awesome), the string lights, and the amazing Mexican cuisine should have music to match. Maybe something lo-fi, La Lom, or Khruangin. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Or at least play the entire 8mile soundtrack. :) Food and service were awesome. read more

I liked the spacious patio area with background music (partially covered), and the complimentary, flavorful, lightly seasoned tortilla chips with a thick, but not chunky, mild-medium salsa (served after just a few minutes). My Southwestern chicken salad ($12.00) was served 20 minutes after I ordered. It had a generous portion of wonderful, tasty, moist, premium, grilled chicken with tortilla strips and small amounts of avocados, pico, shredded cheese, and corn on a large bed of mediocre iceberg lettuce, with a small amount of tasty dressing in an 8" x 3" bowl. The service was attentive, but neither friendly nor welcoming. Overall, I'm thinking 3.5 stars and rounding down. read more

I am still in awe of how amazing the elote (street corn) was. The enchiladas were very well cooked with great sauces on top. Usually Mexican rice as a side is pretty bland but here it actually had such a nice flavor. As a self-proclaimed salsa disliker, I was pleasantly surprised to find this salsa was very thin and flavorful. Prices are consistent with the quality of food. The service was great and very friendly. The bar was beautiful and stocked with an amazing selection of tequilas. The place was pretty small and intimate, but the outdoor eating area was large with a fire pit too. One of my favorite Mexican food spots in KC! read more

Food is good, but cutlery and glasses are super dirty. When they wipe down the tables they just smear parts of food around. Three different staff members didn't follow instructions well. My food came out wrong also. Ordered shrimp and got fish instead. Server was polite though. Maybe they need to hire more staff so they can take their time, clean better, and not be rushed. The dirty cups and silverware make me not want to return for some time ---I got grossed out! Probably not a good idea to come during cold and flu season. read more

So I ordered chilaquiles and my heart was set on this cause I've been trying to find where this dish was served. I was so excited to see the dish offered here during brunch so I had to order it. To my disappointment everything was so salty and not enjoyable. Each dish was either to salty or overly savory. However, the server was amazing - super kind, very attentive even though it looked like she had the whole floor. I would go back just for the drinks but not the food. read more

I went to Brookside Barrio by myself yesterday, since I was going to see Beautiful at Starlight. When I arrived, I told the hostess that I can sit anywhere, but just would like to be seated now. She had me sit at the bar outside. In hindsight, I would have pushed to sit at a table. I think the service suffered because it's a very popular happy hour spot and it was so busy that I ended up waiting probably 10 mins to ask for my check while I had my card in my hand and staring at the bartenders. That being said, I very much enjoyed my food. Chips and salsa were great - really liked the unusual seasoning on the chips, though some of them were too thickly coated, rather than a light dusting. The guacamole was also great. I ordered the seafood enchiladas. VERY good. Not at all fishy and I loved the shrimp and scallops in it. It was quite spicy, so if you are a mild spice fan, it might be too much for you. The street corn and rice were also quite tasty. I might have ordered dessert but I wasn't really checked on once my food arrived and then I needed to leave. I wasn't the only one having service challenges. The couple next to me received their guacamole before their chips and salsa, which meant they had nothing to dip in their guac. TL;DR: Great food, uneven service read more

I've checked out Brookside Barrio twice - and both times were really quite good. Enjoyed the fresh flavors, the outdoor seating options and the fun neighborhood feeling of the restaurant. Came for Sunday brunch on a snowy day during the power outage. We sat outside technically, but it was enclosed and their overhead heater was very nice. Got the duck tacos and mango water cocktail thing, forget the name. Food was okay for me. I love duck, but it didn't really stand out in this dish. Came with 2 tacos, rice on the side, and black beans in a deep fried tortilla? bowl. Quantity was fine with all the side carbs, but would easily trade less sides for another taco. My drink was boring, questionable alcohol content. Was regretting my choice but my friends complained about their bloody marias too. Service was good though, just wasn't enough for me. read more

I met a friend here for lunch a few weeks ago as she had raved about the food here - the chips more specifically. Unfortunately, I had high standards coming in because of how many people talked to me about the chips. Sadly, when the chips arrived, she immediately said these were not how they usually look. Plus they were mostly small crumbs with barely any seasoning. We also order the cheese dip which was extremely thick and not very appealing. The staff was nice and the patio would have been amazing if the weather was permitting, but we sat inside. We needed to be productive after lunch so we did not order margs for lunch. I'm a stickler when it comes to my Mexican food so I wasn't in love with this place, but I might be willing to try them again in the future...only time will tell. read more

We ordered a drink and asked for a cocktail napkin or something to wipe the bar off and the bartender indicated they did not have napkins. We ordered an appetizers and it was served without plates or silverware. We had to ask repeatedly for small plates and utensils. The server was rude and unprofessional. We addressed the issue with management and were addressed in a manner as if she was a shining gem and just bc she introduced herself everything was now acceptable. I've been here quite a few times, and I've always had a great time! Let's start with the service - regardless of how large my party has been, the servers have always been exceptional. They were able to keep track of us and even make recommendations if someone wasn't sure. The best part is the option to simply pay online - it makes it so much easier, and also speeds up the process. Food: amazing, hands down. No matter what I have gotten, I've never regretted it. My absolute favorite thing to order is the Camarones - beer battered shrimp tacos with the absolute best sauce to go with. I'm a huge fan of shrimp tacos, and I have yet to find a spot in Kansas City that can make them better. The prices have also stayed reasonable throughout the years, making it easy to keep coming back. I also love that there are so many seating options. Inside or out, by the fireplace or heated patio, there's an option for every vibe. The only reason I knocked off a star is because they don't always have a lot of non-alcoholic options. For example, this is the only Mexican restaurant I have ever been to that doesn't have a Mexican coke. When I came by for brunch, they also didn't have coffee and recommended getting some from Starbucks across the street after. While there are tons of alcoholic options, it would be nice if it could be a little more inclusive of non-alcohol drinkers. Overall, I love Barrio and will keep coming back! read more

Stopped by barrio for brunch this morning. The patio is awesome- highly recommend for good weather. The pepino margarita is refreshing and delicious. Ordered the jackfruit hash, it was ok and I added some salt and it was good! The chips are delicious - thick with seasoning. I would definitely go back for another meal. read more

Went here during covid for a Sunday brunch as a precursor. I'm a big fan of Mexican cuisine and recently moved to KC. We got their queso which was fantastic. Their deep fried chips stole the show. I think chips are massively important at Mexican restaurants and these may have been the best I've ever had. I got the breakfast burrito which was delicious. Their rice and beans had a bit of spice to them and were outstanding. Highly recommend. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because we got bottomless mimosas and they were super heavy on the orange juice and light on the champagne. I honestly would have just ordered a margarita if I knew how the mimosas would be made. If that's fixed, easily a 5 star!! read more

I am a chips and salsa aficionado and theirs are amazing - first basket is free and they season their fresh chips with tajin - which just makes them super special. I also am obsessed with their Spicy Pina margarita. Their Happy Hour is dope and it's easy to get people to meet me here for a fun evening on their adorable patio. I'm a huge fan. I'd been wanting to visit Brookside Barrio for some time. I'd heard excellent things and every time I'd tried to go the wait was very long so when we stopped in last week and the wait was only 30 mins we went for it! The best thing we had was the queso, chips, and salsa. The carne asada tacos I had were tasty but the steak was cooked really rare, and in huge strips which made it nearly impossible to eat as a taco. My husband and friend both had duck carnitas tacos and they both thought they were just okay - they were way too hot for my friend and my husband waited for a long time to ask for more salsa as they were dry, but our server never reappeared. The last thing that was kind of a turn off was that our appetizer came out just moments before our food. I always prefer to take it slow and enjoy and meal and not feel rushed rather than try to share an app and eat our entrees in tandem. Overall the ambiance of this place is fun, and located in a fun neighborhood. I think the best time to go would be for happy hour as the drinks and apps were truly great. read more

I hate a negative review. I own a business and that would suck. But omg what we just experienced. We walked in and we're immediately greeted and we said we needed a table for two. Then an older lady I think the manager started arguing with a younger hostess on where to seat us, another hostess then walked up and asked if we had a seating preference. We asked for inside as it was 98 at 6:30pm in which she said there weren't any available . We then said we'd just sit at the two chairs at the end of the bar. We were told we couldn't sit there because it "office space" for the manager. So I said we'd wait to sit inside., Frustrated, she walked way and came back and said there was nothing. Because earlier the manager seemed to be telling her to sit us outside . Honestly she could have said "there's nothing available right now do you mind waiting?" BUT NOTHING. The hostess etiquette was MIA this evening Lesson to the manager- 1.Don't argue in front of customers 2.Don't give attitude to your team in front of customers. These young girls need mentors not low energy leadership. 3.Don't lose money for an "office space"that belongs to the pockets of the bartenders and the restaurant. Final thoughts to the female manager that was the leader of this team. Was looking for a new place for "Happy Hour" & when it said theirs starts at 2, I was on board. I had a frozen peach margarita and when they brought out the warm chips with that seasoning, I was in heaven. We had the loaded queso & more chips. We also tried steak tacos, the meat was really tender & seasoned. We also tried the quesadilla & wings. Everything was tasty. At that time they weren't too busy. We got good service & good food. Update: A year later & this has become one of my favorite go to places. I'm pretty sure that I've tried almost everything on the menu. Let me start with... I really really wanted to like this place. Nice patio, good music, casual atmosphere. Arrived at 9:20, staff shared that the kitchen closes at 9:30pm, I say, thank goodness it's 9:20. She says "they haven't taken an order in a long time, they're starting to pack up" Being new in town, we agreed to get drinks. She goes to check on whether the table is sanitized, comes back and leads us out. We get to the table - its sopping wet. - I open my napkin roll and wipe the table down. She brings out the agreed upon chips and salsa... A few minutes later the neighboring table gets their food order- I thought tre kitchen was sooo closed they were packing up to go home. We ask our server what time the kitchen closed, he said, it's still open - they close at 9:45 - we mention the other woman said it closed at 9:30- he immediately clams up and says "well she's the manager, so it's what ever she says" Irritatingly I ask for some queso- miraculously, he appears with that and more chips. There is a distinct lack of of customer service here. Someone wanted to go home. ‍ We won't be back. read more

First off, their patio is killer. They have so many heaters set up, that you can comfortably sit outside in the middle of winter while you watch the Chiefs game! I found Barrio on Instagram. They always post such good looking food on their feed. My sister was in town for the holidays, so we decided to give it a try! Well, we were highly disappointed to say the least. Our waitress was really good. She started off by bringing us some chips and salsa. I will give Barrio this, they have some really great chips! They taste homemade and seasoned to perfection. We started off with some of their queso and the ceviche. The cheese dip wasn't anything special. It wasn't hot, nor was it super cold. My fiancé wouldn't even touch the ceviche. It was very different to say the least. He kept saying, "That is not ceviche". It was almost like it was shrimp & scallops in a taco sauce. We definitely would not order it again. We all ordered margaritas. My sister ordered the strawberry margarita. The consistency was thick. Keep in mind, this was a Marg on the rocks. We assumed maybe because it was the strawberry puree or something that made it thick. Who knows? My other sister and I ordered the Spicy Pina. This was a Spicy Pineapple Margarita. Not too bad but it wasn't my favorite. My normal go-to is a Jalapeno margarita at any other Mexican restaurant. So, once I was finished with my first margarita I decided to order a normal jalapeno margarita. Oh my gosh. I have never had to send a drink back before but this time was definitely an exception. It had looked like I had a bunch of green floaties in my drink with NO ice. It was terrible. I ended up switching it out for a regular marg. We were all highly disappointed. Next, our lunch. I don't think our lunch could have been any worse. We could have had a better meal at Taco Bell drive thru. A few of us ordered the Birria Tacos ($12) and my sister ordered the Mexican Lettuce wraps with chicken. The Birria tacos had hardly any meat on them, and the 'meat' that actually was on the taco was mostly fat. It had more onions on these tacos than anything. My sister took a bite and could not even finish chewing if that tells you anything. The Mexican lettuce wraps had no flavor at all. Had a wonderful dinner tonight with my husband. Both of us had the mango agua Fresca cocktail which was delicious but a little too seeet. No problem our server topped mine off with a little club soda to solve that. Husband had the birria tacos with rice and beans and he loved them especially with the pickled onions. I had the surf and turf kabobs with rice and Elote corn. Nice char on the corn and perfect amount of spice. Delicious! Beautiful weather and a great patio. We will be back for sure. read more

I've been coming to BB for several years now and I think it just gets better with every visit. They have one of the longest (2:30p-6:30p) and best Happy Hours in KC! The patio area is amazing. They have fire pits and up right heaters for when it's a bit chilly and big umbrellas for some shade when it's warm. The staff is always quick and efficient. The margaritas are delicious and they have a wide variety, which I love. The double OG and the spicy pina are my favorites! The food is glorious. Make sure to try the burnt end quesadilla and the chicken and steak skewers! They, however, do not except reservations so be prepared to usually wait for a bit. All in all, one of my favorite places to sit, relax and have a margarita with house-made chips and salsa! read more
