(my first review for this place was a one star because they gave me the wrong food) I've been getting brother Chinese food for about a year and it's pretty good and pretty consistent. The best things about it are that it taste good and it's affordable. I got the- Sweet and sour combo Egg fried rice (no carrots or peas) Moo shi beef Beef and scallop human style sweet-and-sour combo $13- I almost always get this. It's a variety of tempura fried chicken, pork, and shrimp with a container of sweet-and-sour sauce.. I like how the sauce is packaged separately so the food still arrives crispy (some places don't do that. The food itself tastes very good and has great texture. Egg fried rice (large)$5 -this is the reason I started coming here. you get a very large portion of good tasting fried rice for just $5. Fried rice usually cost more when there's meat in it but it's hard to find places that make egg fried rice and sell it this cheap. I've also never gotten eggshell in it. Many other places I've tried have given me eggshell at one point. Moo shi beef $12.50 - (I don't have any experience with Moo shi, so take this with a grain of salt) it was a bit salty and oily, but it wasn't terrible. It is basically shredded beef and vegetables with very thin square pancakes to eat it from and hoisin sauce as a condiment. As I said it wasn't terrible, but I don't think I'll get it again anytime soon. Beef and scallop Hunan style (spicy) $14.35- I had never had this either prior to last night's order. It is basically, beef, scallops, and vegetables like baby corn, onions, bell peppers, broccoli, and carrots and a thick savory brown sauce. I found it tasted very good. Two complaints about this item. What I received was not spicy (that least to my liking) and there were not very many scallops (the ones I got tasted very good). But this is probably the best item I've had on the menu that wasn't fried.I was very impressed by this. I'll probably start ordering it more with my other regular items. Other items I would recommend that I didn't get in last night's order but Will vouch for- -chicken wings -crispy beef -pu pu platter -fried cheese wonton -rib tips (just do not get the "steak and cheese egg roll" they will send you a regular egg roll and pretend that it's a steak and cheese egg roll. Even after you tell them, there's no tea in it and it's filled with cabbage. 8/16/25 update, this place is a solid takeaway Chinese restaurant. The food is fresh, made to order, good portions, and efficient. I have no problems with service. The moo shu is gross because they use raw wonton wrappers as pancakes, not good. Beyond the horrible moo shu, other things are good. read more

We've been grabbing carryout at Brother Chinese for the past 8 years - with carryout at least once or twice a month. Quick, easy, cheap, and on the way home. And ALWAYS "10 Minutes!" till your order is ready. Over the years, we've found our faves...always Egg Drop Soup, Hot & Sour Soup, the Fried Dumplings, and then a rotation of Singapore Rice Noodles (spicy level) or Combination Lo Mein or Combination Fried Rice and Orange Chicken (awesome) or Sweet & Sour Chicken or Moo Shi Pork, or Mongolian Beef. Can't go wrong with any of those. They are all consistently good. Ordering from the Beyond Menu App was quick, easy, and avoided any confusion. But Brother Chinese appears to be a small mom and pop run shop and they recently discontinued using the Beyond Menu App because the added cost of using it cut into their thin margin. "Too expensive" was the phrase used. Since then, we just keep a menu handy and call in - referring to the menu item rather than just the description. Last time we were there, we grabbed a fresh menu and figured we'd post it up on Yelp to make it easier for the rest of you neighborhood Brother Chinese fans to dial it in. Over the years, we settled on our regular rotation of items highlighted on the menu. So many of the reviews that drag down Brother Chienese Yelp ratings relate to delivery. For us - we'd rather pick it up hot & right out of the wok. Their parking lot is hit or miss (usually "miss") - so bring a quarter to drop in one of the many parking meters within a few steps of their crowded parking lot. read more

We had the shrimp egg foo young, shrimp fried rice (small) & hunan shrimp (small). I have to give them 5 stars this time - as I said before I am a very picky eater & the food was the best I've had from them in a very long time! Everything was very fresh, nothing was burnt (most places burn their egg foo young). Plenty of shrimp throughout the egg foo young, the gravy was good, & the shrimp fried rice had plenty of shrimp throughout as well.I love that is not the yellow rice. The best thing was the hunan shrimp - as requested it was medium spicy, plenty of shrimp throughout. The sauce was the star - it was thick, almost like a gravy & it just meshed well with the shrimp & especially with the green peppers that were in it. The only complaint that I have is that they send too much white rice every time. I think the places that have white rice should ask if the person wants any; otherwise it just goes to waste. Their egg foo yung is my favorite, their egg rolls are delightful, and their hot & sour soup will cure anything that ails you. I especially love that they offer 3 levels of heat! I got take out Gen. Tso's , chicken wings , and the fried shrimp with fries. The General Tso's chicken has great flavor , and the wings were fresh with great seasoning and crispy coating. They do not lie about giving you a large fry. It is a container full of hot fries ....so good. The fried shrimp were plentiful and crispy and delicious. How is this place 3 stars!?!? 5/5 for me! This place hands down is one of the cheapest and best Chinese food place I have ever had. They do not skimp on the food. I got sesame chicken combo with fried rice and it comes with an egg roll too. Chicken has a lot of flavor and the fried rice is amazing!! I only got a crab cake sandwich.. yes, a crab cake sandwich at a local Chinese restaurant. Let me tell you it's was extremely tasty. It was a 6 inch sub with a delicious crab cake along with crispy fries. If you're craving Chinese food this is the place to go! I would highly recommend. This place became one of my favorite. This was the first time that I ordered from this restaurant. No one in my family enjoyed their food. The lo main noodles were greasy. The egg foo yung was mushy and didn't seem fully cooked. The shrimp with broccoli and beef with snow peas have very little shrimp and beef in it. The Kung Pao was decent. But there was no option to select how much heat and it was way too spicy. Normally, we save the left overs for the next day. This was the first time that no one wanted to do so which tells you how much we didn't like the food. read more

Place is solid, better than some others we've tried in the area. Only the dumplings and cheese wontons stand out as "fantastic." All their dishes have been fine. Garlic chicken wasn't very garlicky. Their dinner portion/size comes with a lotttt of food (a full tray) versus the combo, which I feel is 60% fried rice. People actually call me crazy, but the cheesesteak from this place is one of the best around and I will take it before Jerrys, Charley's, and just about any other place that specializes in cheesesteaks. They have an all day special combo for about $8 to get you an 8 inch sub of your choosing fries and a drink. The lady at the counter is always nice and always gets your order right, and if she doesn't she'll do whatever she can to make it right. The woman behind the window refused to serve me or even acknowledge my presence and started taking taking orders from others who came in after me, and who' were in line behind me and who called on the phone. One night, I was in the heart of Wheaton (and not Silver Spring as the restaurant's address would suggest); it was late. For some reason, I was in the mood for some fried rice...just some old fashion, unadulterated, Americanized fried rice. And, Brother Chinese Food seemed to fit the bill. Full Key, a reputable Cantonese restaurant, was just across the street; and, other Chinese restaurants were nearby too (as Wheaton is full of them). However, I had a hunch that the prices at Brother would probably be less expensive because it is a carry out primarily and not a full-blown restaurant. Besides, fried rice is easy to make. Carryout places everywhere crank out fried rice competently every day. And, my instincts often is to try someplace new...It's the Yelper in me. Well...I was wrong (what a bad move). When I placed my order (of chicken fried rice), I asked the person at the counter if they use yellow rice when they prepare their fried rice. The woman answered, "yellow rice." Some carryout joints color their white Jasmine rice "yellow" before stir frying it. Often, this is done with yellow food coloring in order to mimic the look of Spanish rice (arroz amarillo). So, carryout restaurants that have a large proportion of Hispanic customers will do this in order to appeal to the sensibilities of their Hispanic patrons. However, I did not want the yellow food coloring; and, I asked that they use white rice instead. When my order came out, I took my food (which was placed in a brown paper bag) and left. I drove away in my car. My fried rice, as it turned out, was indeed made of white rice. In fact, it was just plain white rice. They had stir fried it lightly, but had not seasoned it in any way...had not added dark soy sauce, had not browned the rice at all. It was just plain white rice...with a few cubes of carrots and peas and some chicken. It was the plainest, most flavorless fried rice I had ever eaten. Granted, a customer may ask for "white rice" to be used in his fried rice. But, that means to make fried rice with the white rice...not to literally serve the customer white rice. Yes, there may have been a communication mishap somewhere. But, really, to serve up essentially a box of white rice to me and to charge me for chicken fried rice is ridiculous. I have no doubt that Brother Chinese Food is quite capable of making good Chinese-American fare. As other Yelpers indicate, their General Tso's Chicken is well liked. However, my experience was a disappointment. The next time I get an urge for fried rice (or, perhaps, a perverted and inexcusable urge for some egg foo young), I will make sure to go somewhere else or maybe bang my head against my dashboard so that I can snap out of it. read more

As I am typing this, I would like t mention I am currently eating one of the best chicken and mixed vegetable dishes I've ever had. The produce is very fresh and quite crisp, and the sauce is just perfect (do note that it is bland, but this is why people order it). It's not very professional when the wife of the restaurant owner hangs up on you twice as you try to explain that a portion of your order arrived cold and the appetizer tasted like it was old and re dipped in hot cooking oil. I wish I could give this place 0 stars but that's not possible. i placed an order for delivery. the driver told me to come outside to get the food because he didn't want to get out of the car. When I go get the food I had to sign the paper and he said "tip? Where's my tip" I said "sorry I don't have any money for tip this time but I'll tip you double next time" he said "no tip now" and I repeated myself he then refused to give me my food unless I tipped him. and to not escalate the situation I wrote down a tip he said "nothing less then 3 or 4 dollars. 4 stars for Americanized Chinese delivery? You know, sometimes I want some 1960's-style Chinese takeout - the old fav's from childhood (mine anyway) like general Tso's and hot and sour soup. I have always wondered about Brother, so with movie in hand we called up and ordered an array of the stand-bys. First, the price us right. Second, delivery was free, fast, and courteous. Third, the flavors throughout were good and the spicy items actually were. Hot and sour soup was a bit gelatinous, but had a nice balance of spice and sour, as well as some fresh mushrooms that were a nice addition. General Tso's had that fresh chili taste and the sauce was not overly sweet. Good. Fried wontons with cheese (oh yes we did!) were obviously handmade and yummy. So crack open a beer, put the movie in and order if you are in the Wheaton area. read more

We received a flier in the mail when we moved into the area so decided to give it a try. The prices are great. The food we ordered was well cooked and had god flavor. We ordered the General Tso combo plates. It's a lot of food for the low price and their flier says their portions are getting larger in may. The fried rice was great. The chicken was cooked just right for me and I really enjoyed the flavor of the egg roll. Delivery was right on time and it was nice and hot. We will definitely be ordering from them again. Worst service ever! I live in a building with a call box. The driver refused to use it and expected me to come down to the front of the complex to get the food. Why am I paying a delivery fee if you cannot deliver. I do not even care about the food quality at this point. This customer service is the worst and ensured that I will never order from them again! I have never had such a rude and disrespectful experience in my entire 39 yrs of living. The women taking my order became extreme agitated and then rose to anger due to my making modifications to my order. She began slamming the cash register key ms aggressively, sighing and every mention of no onions and slammed her palms down while muttering under her breath. I asked her if she was ok and why she displayed such a negative attitude towards me and she proceeded to roll her eyes and avoid acknowledging her behavior which presented as extremely dismissive. I certainly don't need to come here considering the pandemic but I wanted to order takeout in support of many small business's who are trying to keep the doors open these difficult times. I am so disappointed in the experience today a can't even give a one star. If you are need of a place for takeout don't waste your time going to Brother's Chinese Food on the corner of Amherst and University in Silver Spring/ Wheaton MD. The Price is Right, but customer service, portion size and waiting an hour for delivery is definitely not! We had a good first experience a few months ago. The food arrived hot, quickly and was plentiful. So we thought we'd give it a go for today's lunch. Mistake. We called our order in at 2pm and were told it would be a half an hour. When 2:55 rolled around, not only was our food still not here, but we hadn't received a call about it. I called them and was told that the driver had just left and that we were first on his delivery list. They apologized, but didn't explain why they were taking so long. Fifteen minutes later (when they are located just *five* minutes from my house) their driver arrived. When I asked him what took so long, he said he was busy. My guess is that they forgot our order entirely until I called because our order came with cans of soda we don't drink as a sort of peace offering. Next time we won't take a chance on lunch.
