We've been grabbing carryout at Brother Chinese for the past 8 years - with carryout at least once or twice a month. Quick, easy, cheap, and on the way home. And ALWAYS "10 Minutes!" till your order is ready. Over the years, we've found our faves...always Egg Drop Soup, Hot & Sour Soup, the Fried Dumplings, and then a rotation of Singapore Rice Noodles (spicy level) or Combination Lo Mein or Combination Fried Rice and Orange Chicken (awesome) or Sweet & Sour Chicken or Moo Shi Pork, or Mongolian Beef. Can't go wrong with any of those. They are all consistently good. Ordering from the Beyond Menu App was quick, easy, and avoided any confusion. But Brother Chinese appears to be a small mom and pop run shop and they recently discontinued using the Beyond Menu App because the added cost of using it cut into their thin margin. "Too expensive" was the phrase used. Since then, we just keep a menu handy and call in - referring to the menu item rather than just the description. Last time we were there, we grabbed a fresh menu and figured we'd post it up on Yelp to make it easier for the rest of you neighborhood Brother Chinese fans to dial it in. Over the years, we settled on our regular rotation of items highlighted on the menu. So many of the reviews that drag down Brother Chienese Yelp ratings relate to delivery. For us - we'd rather pick it up hot & right out of the wok. Their parking lot is hit or miss (usually "miss") - so bring a quarter to drop in one of the many parking meters within a few steps of their crowded parking lot.

I haven't been here for a while and my husband wanted to get lunch there, so we did. We always get the fried chicken with fried rice which we love and would always recommend! However, we tried something else this time. I got the shrimps with lobster sauce and fried rice. It was decent. The cashier was nice. We put in the order online and just picked up.

We had the shrimp egg foo young, shrimp fried rice (small) & hunan shrimp (small). I have to give them 5 stars this time - as I said before I am a very picky eater & the food was the best I've had from them in a very long time! Everything was very fresh, nothing was burnt (most places burn their egg foo young). Plenty of shrimp throughout the egg foo young, the gravy was good, & the shrimp fried rice had plenty of shrimp throughout as well.I love that is not the yellow rice. The best thing was the hunan shrimp - as requested it was medium spicy, plenty of shrimp throughout. The sauce was the star - it was thick, almost like a gravy & it just meshed well with the shrimp & especially with the green peppers that were in it. The only complaint that I have is that they send too much white rice every time. I think the places that have white rice should ask if the person wants any; otherwise it just goes to waste. Love, Love, Love this place! Both the lady at the counter & I guess maybe her husband when I get delivery are so nice & the place is clean. Check it out!

This place is fantastic. Reminds me of the old school Chinese I used to get in NYC except it's always delivered so fast the food is still piping hot! Their egg foo yung is my favorite, their egg rolls are delightful, and their hot & sour soup will cure anything that ails you. I especially love that they offer 3 levels of heat! My only wish is that they'd make homemade fried noodles for the soup. Give Brother some love so I never lose them!

How is this place 3 stars!?!? 5/5 for me! This place hands down is one of the cheapest and best Chinese food place I have ever had. They do not skimp on the food. I got sesame chicken combo with fried rice and it comes with an egg roll too. Chicken has a lot of flavor and the fried rice is amazing!! I only got a crab cake sandwich.. yes, a crab cake sandwich at a local Chinese restaurant. Let me tell you it's was extremely tasty. It was a 6 inch sub with a delicious crab cake along with crispy fries. If you're craving Chinese food this is the place to go! I would highly recommend. This place became one of my favorite. Also, FYI they gave you a free drink as well, which is nice! Would definitely come back again.

Poo poo platter. Everything was decent, and surprising not very greasy

Place is solid, better than some others we've tried in the area. Only the dumplings and cheese wontons stand out as "fantastic." All their dishes have been fine. Garlic chicken wasn't very garlicky. Their dinner portion/size comes with a lotttt of food (a full tray) versus the combo, which I feel is 60% fried rice. We've only ever picked up, since we live so close, so no experience with their delivery.

Was feeling hangry because I had planned on stopping at Hard Times for a bowl of chili -and found out they were closed on Mondays. So, pretty much pulled a name out of a hat and would up at Chuan Tian Xia because, well, Szechuan cooking uses chiles, no? Yesssss! I ordered Signature Dumplings and a bowl of Beijing-style Beijing-style Zhajiang Noodles. The dumplings were outstanding: a mix of shrimp, pork, and chive that were plump, juicy, fragrant with the herbaceous flavor of chives. The accompanying sauce was not too sweet, not too hot, just right as a complement to the dumplings. Yowza. I was a happy camper... ...and then I dug into my noodles. Double yowza! Thick wheat noodles topped with a rich sauce made from (I think) fermented soybean paste and braised pork belly, garnished with cucumbers. The portion was way to big for me to eat after my flight, but I really, really enjoyed it (and the remaining dumplings) for lunch today. Did I say yowza? I'm an adventurous eater so the menu's less Americanized items were what I would have ordered given more time (like Maoxuewang: can you say "pig's tongue, spam, pork intestine, and beef tripe"? Protein is protein, baby!). Just means I need to come back, and I will, as quickly as I can.

We ate family style and ordered the scallion…read morepancakes, the spicy sesame paste tofu, the spicy oil wonton pork, the chive and pork dumplings and the sesame balls (filled with red bean paste). Total (not including tip) came out to approximately $49. What's Hot - Menu. Excellent. It's also written in Chinese in addition to English. For those of us familiar with traditional ethnic Chinese food, a menu written in Chinese is a good sign. They have traditional Taiwanese and Chinese food like scallion pancakes, sesame balls, beef noodle soup, soup dumplings, etc... Very good variety and there appears to be something for everyone, possibly with the exception of vegan dishes.. - Quality. Pretty good. Their scallion pancake was soft, not too oily, and not too salty. I prefer the scallion pancake to have been a bit more thick and flaky, but that's my personal preference. To be fair, still delicious. Their chive and pork dumplings definitely had a delicious chive flavor. Substantial and the wrapper was not too thick. Their spicy sesame paste tofu had a good flavor and substantive. The chili oil wontons were not too spicy and had a good flavor. Again, my personal preference would have been for the dumplings to have been more substantive, but still pretty decent. - Service. Pretty good. It appears most, if not all their staffers, speak Chinese (Mandarin), which was also helpful, because I specifically ordered in Chinese. I asked them about the spice level, because I wanted to ensure it would not be too spicy for my friend. - Price. Pretty good value for menu and portions. - Location. It's pretty easy to find. Also within convenient walking distance to the Silver Spring metro. The inside space is pretty good. Tables can seat a minimum of 2, all the way up to 8. What's Not - Quality. The sesame balls are smaller than I expected. They're the rough approximation of a ping pong ball, maybe smaller. I was disappointed, because I like sesame balls that are substantial. - Service. I specifically asked for soup spoons, because we were eating dumplings. Instead, they gave me regular spoons. Not all the dishes come out in the order you hope. For example, main dishes may come out before the appetizers. This is going to be dependent on your personal preference. - Parking. There is parking near the restaurant, but it's going to be dependent on the day and time. Final Answer Worth coming back.

We arrived right when they opened around 11 AM on a weekend and were seated immediately since it wasn't too busy yet. One thing to note is that the entire party needs to be present before being seated, which they enforce, but it helps keep things moving smoothly once you're inside. The service felt traditional and efficient, with attentive push carts circulating constantly, making it easy to see what's fresh and grab dishes as they come by. The staff were also accommodating with a baby seat, which made the visit comfortable for families. The steamed cart is always my favorite, and Far East does it well. Standouts for me were the shrimp rice crepe (silky and delicate), shrimp dumplings (har gow) with plump, juicy filling, and the steamed ribs, which were tender and flavorful. The chicken feet and tripe were also well prepared -- classic dim sum staples done right. I also loved the sticky rice, which was fragrant and satisfying, along with two must-order bakery items: the pineapple buns and egg tarts. Both were fresh and comforting, with the egg tarts having that perfect balance of flaky crust and smooth custard. Overall, Far East delivers a solid, traditional dim sum experience -- lively carts, reliable favorites, and a welcoming environment for groups and families. Great spot to gather, share dishes, and enjoy a relaxed weekend dim sum meal. Definitely glad to have seating back again.

Far East is a longtime staple in the DMV food scene, having been in operation since 1974. I was a few times a year patron leading up to 2019, and the last time I was there was in 2023. During my 2023 visit, the place was showing it's age with dingy matted carpeting and cramped dining room. Against my better judgement, I made the trek into Rockville to meet up with some folks for Sunday dim sum. IMHO, while it's true at one point, VA dim sum was inferior to it's MD siblings across the river, I'd say there are plenty of comparable if not BETTER places in VA. Our group was large (15), so we had to dine at two tables, as the largest table could only accomodate12. And note, for dim sum, Far East does not seat incomplete parties, so everyone arrive early. Also note, if you do choose to dine here, the parking lot is fairly small - but there is additional parking towards the back past the dumpsters. My recollection from 2023, was the selection of dishes was quite limited, and the 3-4 ladies who were pushing the steam carts, were peddling the same items over and over. That experience has not changed in 3 yrs. Upon sitting, our hungry group ordered dishes of shrimp dumplings (har gow), shumai, tofu rolls, rice rolls w/shrimp and beef, etc. Everything was fine; but nothing really stood out. The items were lukewarm, and cooled within a few minutes of being passed around the Lazy Susan. To me anyway, I found many of the dishes to be underseasoned...and when does a person characterize Chinese food as not being SALTY enough? The table chili oil was also quite bland. There was a good mix of fried chilis combined with oil, but there was just a hint of spice/heat with the predominant flavor being a heavy greasiness. Perhaps the worst part of the experience was the service. Even accepting that Chinese restaurants are notorious for "providing" legendary bad service, Far East exceeded that reputation. I understand that it was Sunday and the place was busy, but it took over 10 minutes for water and tea to arrive. And a few times, I literally had to get up from the table to flag down servers to refill empty water glasses and tea pots. Piles of dirty dishes kept piling up to the point where a few of us, took them to the bussers and food runners ourselves to make space for new dishes at the table. However, the worst incident was at the end when the servers and what I assume was the manager, rushed us to pay the bill since they needed the table, one of the staff was hurriedly cleaning the table, and spilled an entire glass of ice water on my friend's dress! He didn't even apologize, and when she went to complain to the manager, the only thing he said was, "it's only water, it will wash out." Wow! even by Chinese restaurant standards, that's bad!!! When the bill arrived, the total came out to roughly $35/person with tax and tip (gratuity is already included for larger parties, so be sure to double-check the bill). The meal was definitely NOT worth the $35, and for that amount, I could've had a much better and filling meal at Peter Chang Herndon - https://www.yelp.com/biz/peter-chang-herndon?osq=Peter+Chang This will undoubtedly be the last time I travel to Montgomery County for dim sum...and especially to Far East Restaurant.
