Such a cute lil place with killer food. I wish I could go all the time! The staff is very young & I will admit - they somehow messed up every single one of our orders in at least one way. It was almost charming. They got away with it because they were kind & the food was that bomb. VEGAN & GLUTEN-FREE ALERT! I got the "popper" grilled cheese (jalapeño cream cheese, cheddar, red pepper flakes) on gluten-free bread with added bacon. I also got a tomato basil soup & a gluten-free s'mores cookie. Bomb, bomb, bomb, BOMB! So comforting & delicious, at a totally reasonable price point. I would go way out of my way to come back here again! read more

We popped by twice during out trip in Kanab and have tried the Kanookie, the ice cream, and a sweet roll. We personally liked the ice cream the best but the Kanookie is probably the most interesting of the three. There is plenty of street parking, lots of seating inside and a few tables outside, and generally not a long wait (if any). Note that their sweets are very sweet - so if you're someone who doesn't like super sweet desserts, I don't think you'd like the Kanookie or the roll. read more

Great cafe in Kanab. The staff were friendly and food came out fast. Grilled cheese was perfectly toasted and paired well with the soup. Tried the Kanookie which was also very good. I'm usually a fan of a regular chocolate chip cookie but I actually preferred their double chocolate cookies (both regular and in the kanookie). Depending on the time of day and size of your group seating inside could possibly be an issue. Street parking out front (free). read more

The ice cream here was suuuuper yummy! I had a pina colada flavor single scoop in a cake cone, and it was the perfect refreshing dessert on a hot summer day in Kanab. The shop itself is super cute, and while we ate our ice cream we looked at all the goods they also sell there. The service was also quite friendly, and we felt welcomed from the moment we came in to the moment we left. Next time we are in Kanab, we will be back! read more

This is the spot after a long hike! We came out here after a long day of exploring and this was definitely the right place to go! The space gave the energy we needed to keep going on our trip! Such an awesome place! Staff is super nice and the building itself is super nice and inviting. Breadsticks were some of the best ever, and the grilled cheese was great for only being $6. Ice cream was solid, I got Cookie Monster and it tasted good but the texture was a little off. Still great overall though. It's a popular spot among the locals and does get crowded at times though, so just try not to go during peak dinner hours. read more

We were wandering the streets of Kanab looking for a light dinner. Our prayers were answered when we checked out Brown Box. In addition to being a popular ice cream spot they have a tempting array of dinner choices. We got the 3 way combo of salad and soup and cookie. Brown Box was really amazing! Staff were really friendly and helpful. Cute little restaurant downtown Kanab that has plenty of inside sitting and very comfortable place just to hang out. We ordered the classic grilled cheese on sourdough and my husband ordered the gourmet grilled cheese. We both got salads and I got sweet and it was delicious!! (I could eat this salad everyday)! We stopped for lunch and ice cream and are SO glad we did. Seriously one of the best grilled cheeses I've ever had. We ordered the Gourmet (standout rosemary flavor) and the Popper (jalapeño). On any given summer evening, you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be a line of folks queuing up to get a scoop of ice cream or hot cookie from the Brown Box Bakeshop. It's the place to satisfy your sweet tooth. There's a good amount of seating both indoors and outdoors, along with a parking lot out back, so it's easily accessible to everyone. The ice cream is pretty good and the service is friendly and as quick as possible-although if you order a fresh cookie, plan on it taking a bit since it's, well, fresh. read more

Brown Box was an absolute gem to find on our travels for delicious comfort food! The grilled cheeses here are delicious - flavorful and great cheese pulls! We got the caprese which was nicely balanced and the gourmet with a mix of cheeses and caramelized onions. The rosemary was strong and was the predominant flavor of the sandwich so some of the flavors were a little lost but it was still altogether delicious, crispy and cheesy! The tomato soup was hearty and was a several steps above the classic canned tomato soup while also tasting nostalgic. The kanookie was also a fun surprise. The small was big enough for two of us and we loved customizing it with scotchie and chocolate chip cookie dough marbled with homemade hot fudge and local ice cream. The people serving at the counter were so pleasant! They were a delight to chat with and were incredibly hospitable. I also loved the homey feel and the touches within the shop with local artist goods and the story of how the restaurant came to be. This spot is definitely worth a stop! It's a great spot to enjoy some comfort food after a long travel or hiking day! read more

The grilled cheese seriously comes in my kid's dream!! And the teenager and mom loved it too! Spot on ratio of cheese to bread, crunch phenomenal, and master touch was the rosemary on the outside of the sandwich. :). The cookie icecream skillet thingy was great too.. but a bigger fan of their icecream and cookie as separate entities, so can enjoy the crunch and the cool! Our menu features dishes meticulously prepared from cherished family recipes, all crafted in-house from scratch using only genuine, high-quality ingredients.

History

Established in 2022.

The Brown Family has been doing business in some form or another on this little corner of Kanab since 1966! When the building that now houses Brown Box became vacant in 2021, Emily (co-owner) felt nudges to make it into another family business. As Emily connected with her cousin, Lacee (co-owner), at their Grandpa Brown's funeral they discussed the possibility of opening a dessert shop together. They dove head first into creating and researching and Brown Box Bakeshop was born on August 18, 2022! A very special motivation for this venture was Emily's little brother, Nathan, who has Down syndrome. He loves to be around people and needed an opportunity to continue to associate with others in his adult years. Nathan's aide, Bobbie, is known for her amazing homemade ice cream and so Nate & Bobbie (and Emily) began posting their ice cream for sale on social media and delivering it to buyers' doors weekly. Their ice cream was a hit and Brown Box was created to be its permanent home!

Meet the Business Owner: Emily - Lacee B.

Many of our Brown Family traditions involve gathering around the table to connect over a delicious meal or treat. Inspired by our family, Lacee honed her baking skills in the form of cakes, cookies, and Grandma Brown's famous sweet rolls while Emily developed her love of preparing delicious homemade meals. We came together on a whim not knowing much about creating or running a business, only feeling deeply that we needed to make something of our ideas. We have learned so much about the restaurant business since and we are always striving to improve our processes. Ultimately, we love seeing people come together around our tables to connect over a delicious bite! We aspire to be the heartwarming corner of Kanab, where all feel welcome as a part of our extended family. We hope to create a haven of connection and inspiration where every visit feels like coming home.

A luxurious 20-minute wait for a small table in a crowded room. We gently noted the glaring lack of any actual pets enjoying this "exclusive" area, but rules are rules, apparently. No dog, no patio. I did consider claiming my girlfriend occasionally identifies as a furry to game the system, but I decided against it. Instead, I simply let the hostess know their brilliant policy had successfully driven away two more paying customers. Mission accomplished!

And the price doesn't help: a combo meal with two wraps, fries, and a drink ran about $10 each. Just not worth it. Prices here are up, quality is down, and service is slow. Right next door, there's a great local burger joint we've enjoyed before--go there instead. Don't waste your time at this McDonald's.
