So I read about this place in the Express, and REALLY wanted to try "The full Monte" sandwich, but they had JUST sold out of them before I'd arrived, but I wasn't leaving on an empty stomach after making the trek out, so I decided on their Italian Hoagie. Now, I haven't had one of these for like 20+ years, and was kinda skeptical since I have a specific taste associated with the memory back when I was in Philly and had them as a kid, so of course didn't want to be disappointed. The lady/owner at the register, Mae, was very patient and very helpful, so I went on and got one. From the first to the last bite it was amazing(!) and then some! I was literally pausing while scarfing down this hoagie to take in childhood memories of my younger brother and I playing in the city and spending "just us guys" time with my Dad. For ANY kind of food to take you back to some good memories and actually live up to them - it's the real deal! (I also wanted to orange soda to complete the trip down foodie memory lane, but they only had SanPelligrino's- which actually turned out better cuz it wasn't too sweet and it refreshingly cleansed the palette, plus their fresh homemade potato chips were perfectly paired.) They even have water ice -haha- and although it wasn't like the Pop's water ice I remember, it was still good... as full and happy as I was, munching on the rest of my chips btw spoonfuls of water ice just made it even better. My dad was watching Triple D back in California and asked me to visit Bub and Pop's and see if the place was good. I went for lunch on a Friday around 12pm and saw a line. I almost walked out but thought why not? The line moved fast, with orders called out each few minutes. I already knew I would try the roast pork with broccoli rabe (about $10 for a half). It's been months and I can't believe I'm still thinking about the Bolognese Parmesan sub. You have to eat it quickly though or else the bread gets soggy. I loved how the meatballs and sausage were piping hot. The lunch lines and wait is pretty long, and it can take 15~ minute to get in and out. I thought it was going to be a quick in and out lunch, but it took way more time than expected just to place the order. The shop can get really crowded. It's a small basement store and you'll find yourself seated in a table literally right next to people waiting in line. I came here tonight because Yelp sent me one of those weekly notifications, this time about pork bellies, and featured Bub and Pop's. I started looking at all the yelp pics and literally started drooling at 10 AM in my office. FOOD: Bolognese parmesan sandwich: As I mentioned above, I planned on keeping one of these sandwiches for lunch the next day. I totally assumed that I would not be able to salvage this one because of the sauce and - what kind of lunatic saves a meatball sub!? To my utter surprise, this was not as goopy and saucy as I thought it'd be. The bread was toasted and was not soggy. The flavor is delicious, mostly because there is literally three types of meat in this sandwich - meatballs, brisket and pork belly. I got huge chunks of brisket and pork belly in mine that was just DELECTABLE. Loved it. Roast Pork sandwich: Not sure why broccoli rabe is an add-on for this sandwich. They should totally make this a permanent ingredient because otherwise, the sandwich would just be meat, bread, and cheese. Nothing really wrong with that but I like some veggies on my sammies, especially when it's as heavy as these are. The broccoli was delicious - a bit oily but the garlicky taste really added to the sammie. Roast pork was tender and well flavored. I think it was the pork jus they added to this that made my bread totally soggy. Unlike the bolognese sandwich, this bread is not toasted so it soaked right through (sad face). SERVICE: Went in for take out but the owner was so friendly! I imagine she must be Bub. She was super sweet - we gabbed, giggled, and gossiped. Lovely gal. I had a half of the Real Obama (Italian beef Chicago style, slow braised beef brisket, giardinera, and aged provolone) and my friend had the full cheesesteak. Both were delicious but the cheesesteak definitely won out- a perfect juicy messy mix of piled beef, provolone, onions, and special sauce. We also sampled the homemade potato chips and dip, and they were very tasty. However, my friend found a few tiny bones in his cheesesteak, which was kind of gross. I constantly argue with my husband about sandwiches in the north vs. the south. I'm a po-boy girl at heart since I'm from Louisiana and I have a difficult time with how most northern style sandwiches are cold meats. This place though is an exception that I'd go back to easily. The place is a tiny hole-in-the-wall, with limited seating so be prepared to wait in line for food. The owners though are actually at the restaurant taking orders and cooking and they are super friendly. We got the Italian and the Boulogne see parmesan. Both were huge and incredibly delicious. Don't be afraid to get the half order for the sandwich because it's enormous. They pile on the toppings and the sandwiches are a challenge to eat which is exactly how it should be. This is my favorite lunch spot in DC, partly for the food and partly because of Bub herself. Bub runs the cash register and she is a force to be reckoned with. She cares deeply about her restaurant and her customers and it really shows. Pay in cash or be lectured about credit card companies by Bub. This place is in complete opposition to every corporate chain fast food place around it. It is family-owned, fresh ingredients, and cozy and homey inside. Every single thing on this menu looks amazing and you cannot go wrong with any of the sandwiches, but my favorite is the Italian. The meats are so flavorful, the cheese is top notch, even the tomatoes are delicious. Pro tip: get it toasted. By far my favorite sandwich in DC. The portions here are huge and a half sandwich is more than enough for one meal. I love coming here and supporting local business owners among the corporate food scene in downtown DC. read more

Bub and Pop's is one of those places that everyone in DC raves about, and I understand why now. Coming in on a Wednesday at 3:30 PM, they were out of everything. The only sandwiches they had left were the Italian, Chicken Parm, and hot dogs. Luckily, I wanted to try the chicken parm sub (Whole $18), and it was the perfect size to split with a friend. The ingredients were so amazingly fresh and delicious. The cheese had a ton of flavor, the arugula was great, and there was a huge piece of chicken. While paying $18 for a sub feels like a lot, half of it was a filling lunch. The quality of ingredients made the price make sense to me. I arrived maybe a half hour after opening and it wasn't too crowded- but definitely getting there. The specials are on the chalk board on the wall but the full menu is on a fold out. I didn't bother going for the full menu because it seemed like the Italian was a must. There were a few ingredients I wouldn't normally want on my sandwich, such as the pickled relish and mayo because I figured I had to get the full experience. I got a half Italian and a bag of kettle cooked chips. Good thing I only got the half, because for me, it was huge! There was plenty of meat on the sandwich. I would say more meat than bread. I could only eat half of it and saved the rest for later. The service was great, the owners seemed very nice. The beef brisket is absolutely delicious. The Apple horseradish sauce and the veal jus combined with the gouda are so tasty. The brisket itself is savory and melts in your mouth. The Jewish hoagie is a delicious twist on the traditional Reuben. The cornbeef is cooked perfectly, and the Cole slaw compliments the sandwich without overpowering any of the flavors. I've been wanting to try this spot for years. I am glad that I was finally in the neighborhood during their business hours. During lunch, my wait was less than 10 minutes to order and less than 10 minutes to receive my order. I was greedy and ordered 2 sandwiches (I mean I waited years to try this place). This place has serious potential, but has not quite yet reached the level I know is possible. I visited Bub and Pop's today and ordered the bolognese parmigiana sandwich (whole). This was a towering monster of several cheeses, sauce, spicy meatballs, pork belly, and brisket. Great flavors were all there in the sandwich, but was too difficult to eat. When I went to put the sandwich to my mouth, the bread broke and its contents fell out onto my plate. While it was delicious to eat it with a fork, I felt that I was barely eating a sandwich. The bread was a bit crispy for my liking as well. Aside from the food, the woman at the counter was SUPER helpful (I think she is Bub) and told me about several items on the menu. Great Sandwiches! A definite bookmark to visit while in DC. Stopped in for a late lunch like an hour before they closed. Love or hate the president, his namesake sandwich is the closest to a hometown sandwich as you'll find. The hoagie relish was such a great touch and I loved the flavor on top of the Italian. This family joint has such a warm feeling to it. The friendly woman at the front of the counter helped me select my first sandwich here. My second time back, I tried the fried chicken sandwich and I was not as delighted as the first visit. I really loved the symphony of flavors in the Italian and I feel that the red sauce and fried chicken cutlet overpowers the entire sandwich. I entered for the first time having no real idea what to expect. I paid for my order and when my number was called I grabbed the brown bag sitting on the receipt and headed to a table. When I sat down and opened the bag, there were chips inside. I hesitate to even call this an honest mistake on *my* part because they were the ones who called my ticket number and placed the bag on top of the receipt. Anyway, about a minute later, the woman who runs the cash register came to my table and began harassing me about whether or not I had ordered chips with my meal. She did this loudly in front of all the customers as though I had purposefully taken an order that wasn't mine. In fact, I had placed the bag to my right and hadn't even eaten from it.
