The cookie of the day was chewy and crisp edged; the brisket was messy with jus and all the better for it, with a crazy zing of horseradish - the Hebrew hammer might require a fork but it was really worth it. We were skeptical of sliced pickles instead of a biteable one but the kosher dill was a game changer. And finally, the sleeper hit - I took a chance with their chocolate water ice. I kind of assumed something called water ice only made sense with popsicle flavors. But they spiked it today with cherry heering, a favorite liqueur of mine, so I trusted their taste and WOW. No idea how something dairy free takes on the texture of fudge. It's a very clean but intense dark chocolate flavor so I loved it - people looking for milk chocolate soft serve not so much. Wow. The small footprint of the place is taken advantage to create a friendly, tastefully decorated and cheerful venue. The staff is amazingly helpful, the manager looks like a friendly Judge Judy recommending plates and sandwiches. It's a festive atmosphere. And together with the excellent food, it really makes this place rock. I had the rich boy, which the manager told me is a fairly new menus addition. Four and a half stars. The bolognese parmesan is to die for. Really, I ate a whole sandwich in one sitting and am now consumed with equal parts joy and regret. Meatballs and sausage in marinara with the perfect amount of parm shaved on top. So much flavor that the pepper bar was optional on this one. Bread crust was robust enough to maintain that slight chew until the last bite. It's far superior to Pop's Beef Brisket, with thinly shaved meat and unmelted gouda. Fried egg add-on is an awesome amount of runny yolk. Kombucha, soda, and beer are among the beverage options to wash your sandwich down. So we came to this quaint shop in Dupont and were greeted by the very kind staff. The menu has great options, a nice selection of cold and hot subs. You can get a half or a whole but let me tell you, there is nothing small about these subs, they are loaded! We finally decided to order the italian hoagie and a cheesesteak. The first bites of each sandwich were honestly mind blowing, for the first 5-6 bites we repeatedly felt the need to let out an "mmmmm" from how delicious they were. Okay, as promised, I said I would give them a try again because last time I visited, even though the Rich Boy I got was very tasty I was a little put off by the reception at the counter. I try to be fair so here goes - yes, this place deserves stellar rating for their sandwiches are simply delicious with quality ingredients. This morning, I ordered a Breakfast sandwich just as it comes and it did not disappoint. The sandwich in signature hoagie came with arugula, tomatoes, thick cut of very tasty bacon (not those synthetic type) and two freshly fried eggs was wonderful! I enjoyed every bite that I could muster and I am not a breakfast type person. The eggs were delicious and perfectly cooked, the bacon was delicious. The only thing I would change was to add the arugula last to go on top instead of the hot eggs being placed on top because it got mushy. Still it was delightful and nearly perfect so deserving of a 5 stars! And since this place is very near my office, I certainly would come back for more and the other sandwiches on the menu. My husband and I learned of Bub and Pop's from an episode of Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives and knew we had to try it. We ordered carry out. My husband wanted to try the Philly Special but they were sold out so he got the Philly Cheesesteak. I ordered the Italian Hoagie without mayo. Sometimes I get a craving. A craving so strong that I will re-arrange my day just so I can satisfy it. Right now i'm on a tuna melt kick. Yeah, I know. So I ordered Bub and Pop's version to give it a try. It is expensive, however. For a whole tuna melt, house made chips and a small giardiniera side was about $30 Pros: Great ingredients with the appropriate bread to tuna ratio. Good seasoning and overall satisfying. Cons: The site says there's provolone and pecorino romano on the sandwich but all I could taste was the pecorino. It was a little overpowering for me. Their version is definitely fancied up with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and relish. It all worked together and it was a very good sandwich, it just wasn't the tuna melt I was day dreaming about. This review is for back when Bubs and Pops was open for dine-in service (I'm sure the food would be just as good for take out!) Bubs and Pops is so good I got it for lunch on the weekend and came back 2 days later for more. Bubs and Pops is a no frills, family run shop that transfers you outside of DC. Once inside, you feel like you're in a small local shop with checkered plastic table clothes and self serve soda fountains. The service is straight to the point- before you can even ask, they immediately tell you here's what we're sold out of and assure you they are actually sold out and have no more in the back. They also close exactly when closing time says, if not a few minutes before. They warned us they would be cleaning up around us, which they started to do about 10 mins before closing - which isn't an issue, its just definitely a no frills, straight to the point shop. Which is all fine when you have subs this great. The first time I went, we got the chicken parmesan (because unfortunately the eggplant parm was sold out) which was nice thick juicy chicken on a perfectly crunchy toasted sub roll. But the real show stealer was the Rich boy, which is essentially a shrimp poboy, loaddddded with fried shrimp and some pickled veggies, mayo and more. Throw some of their hot sauce and self serve relish to enhance the sandwich even more. I've been to new Orleans many many times and this was as good as any poboy I've ever had. I went back a second time to get the eggplant parm which did not disappoint. Nicely fried flavorful eggplant with gooey cheese and tangy sauce can't be beat. I'm not sure what took me so long to try Bub and Pop's, it had been in my list forever. Really, it was a mistake because I had a truly amazing sandwich! I had the Rich Boy, had plenty of perfectly fried shrimp, the homemade pickles and vegetables perfectly complimented the shrimp all wrapped in a nice roll. The flavors mixed perfectly and I can easily say that this was the best Po' Boy I have had in DC, and probably the best Po' Boy outside of New Orleans. I got a full sized sandwich, and I only ate half which was plenty and filling. It is definitely not cheap, ($10 for a half, $20 for a full sandwich) but the quality makes it worth it. I had no idea of the size so I ordered a large, but could only eat half of it. Will eat the other half tomorrow, though with all the oil and vinegar it may be soggy by then. The potato salad was underwhelming, a few potato chunks swimming in a mayo-based dressing. I would have preferred chips, but strangely they are not on the menu. (There are fries, however). Canned sodas are $1.50, a good deal for DC restaurants. I'm taking a star off for the lack of potato chips, and the price of the sandwich (a half sandwich is $12, and the full is $24, but should be less than double a half in my opinion). I've been twice. And I was underwhelmed. This first time, I got the soup of the day, ox tails and cabbage soup. It was mostly water and cabbage. I paid $12 for the small. I went earlier this week and got the Bub's Italian Hoagie, the half because $12 for a half just seemed right. (Rolls eyes). The sandwich was tasty and very meaty but the bread got really soggy and the peppers they add to the sandwich, fell out if it and onto my clothes. Not a good look, since I had to work 4 more hours. I found myself tearing off bread before I bit into the sandwich. The hoagie is very filling and the arugula is a great bite to this combo. I wish that I would've added the sweet peppers to it with some other condiments, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I have some other hoagies on my radar that I need to come try since i'm literally within walking distance. I'm glad that I knocked them off my bucket list and will surely include them in my monthly rotation. This is a family owned business and it's true they make a bit of a fuss if you don't pay with cash. They have a particular disdain for AmEx, lol. Just before the latest Metro catastrophe where they pulled 2 of 3 trains out of service indefinitely, I ventured into DC and rode to the easily missed tiny Bub & Pop's. I'm so glad I did that while I could, as I can't imagine having to delay the most sublime eating experience I did have. I ordered the cheesesteak "Hoagie Style", which in their universe comes with Sauteed Onions, Mild Provolone Cheese, Roma Tomatoes, Iceberg Lettuce, Raw Onions, Hot Peppers, Sweet Peppers, Pickles, Bub's Vinaigrette & Pecorino Romano. It's those last few ingredients that makes this a bold otherworldly departure from a traditional hoagie cheesesteak. This thing is not a cheesesteak, it's some work of art that happens to have a cheesesteak inside of it. I inhaled this thing in minutes, and it wasn't hunger, that's just how good it was. Love the staff and vibe and the 2 person quality control team at the register making sure you come correct with your order and that your order comes correct to you. The prices are ridiculously high and they pressure you every chance they get. Pressure to not use a credit card, pressure to tip even when you are doing take out by LITERALLY looking over the cash register when you sign to make sure you tip, and thanking you aloud for the tip for the next customer to hear...If the food were that good, I wouldn't even trip. But the bolognese parmesan sandwich I got was so medicore that I was in shock at how much I had paid total for a half sandwich, and then I was super relieved that I had only gotten the half. WAY over-salted! I had the chicken parm (which is not a chicken parm) and a Hebrew Hammer. Both were salted too heavily and too late. The bread is good and portions are plentiful. But, you have to learn when and how to properly salt your food. For years, Bub and Pop's made the best Philly-style cheesesteaks in the city with a little Philly attitude. The attitude was part of the charm. We used to walk over early for lunch because the line to pick up got so long. For some reason, they stopped serving cheesesteaks, closed the inside, and the Philly attitude has turned to arrogance. They act like they've been awarded a Michelin star. It's just a tourist trap now. There are a bunch of other good places right on M street to grab lunch. Leave B&P's to the tourists. I've been coming to Bub & Pops since shortly after they opened. I don't know how to say this, but the chef is a sandwich maestro. The sandwiches are always beautifully crafted and just frankly delicious. Just a symphony in your mouth where every ingredient sings. I have tried just about every sandwich on the menu, and I would happily eat any of them again and again. My favorite is the Bolognese Parmesan, but everything is amazing. The chef also has a special gift for vegetable sandwiches. I dream about the Bulgarian Feta. It is now retired, but was one of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted. They also briefly had a beet sandwich, which I can't even describe how good it was. This place is worth a visit. The sandwiches are filling. The 1/2 will fill you up. I usually order a whole so I can have two or three meals. The bread being baked there has now taken the sandwiches to another level. Frankly, they're the best sandwiches I have had anywhere. My only gripe is that there were made unbelievable bread puddings in the early days, and I would love to see those returned to the restaurant. Funny how much hype and tourist traffic is generated by an appearance on "Diners, Dives and Drive Thru's." I was in the area, searching for lunch, and noticed the high reviews with mentions of Gus (the host of the aforementioned show). I wanted to try their popular Philly but they were sold out. Instead, I opted for the Roast Pork sandwich. A synopsis: Pros: Very informative counter service; the lady at the front explained all items in considerable detail. Fast service. Once I had ordered, my sandwich was ready at the counter in less than 5 minutes. The 5 year aged gouda slices on the sandwich were deliciously aromatic. The fresh bread was very good (except where it had become soggy). Cons: The pork was excessively over salted. The overall flavor of the sandwich was salty to the point of obscuring any natural flavors. The bread was somewhat ruined by sogginess. (They need to slow down and take a minute to drain the meat before putting it on the bread). Very small, claustrophobic space. (However there are a few outdoor seats). $19 for a whole (11-12 inches) or $11 for a half is pricey for what you are getting. That's with no sides or drink. I paid $23 with tax for a footlong and an iced tea. Was it literally twice as good as a chain footlong from Subway or Quiznos? I'm sorry to say this but: no. Maybe a bit better due to being an independent dive, but I really was not impressed with what I was served for the reasons above. Overall: Way overrated, based on my one experience. I would consider one more try - maybe their Italian sandwich that is also popular - but only for take out. read more
