We have been a frequent flier to the Buckeystown Pub for years. Our last visit was likely our last until the new owners take over. Our waitress was WONDERFUL but the folks who work there always are. The crabs were "okay" but just so. The piece de resistance was our crab cake. I have lived in Maryland for nearly 60 years and I have never had a crab cake like the crab cake they served us for $20 that evening. IT WAS HORRIBLE, dry, filled with cake but very little crab. We didn't even finish it. The irony is that Cameron's Seafood is just a few miles up the road, the Buckeystown Pub could easily cut a deal with them and buy their smaller crabcakes, serve them for $20 or $25 and people would be lining up for them. read more

I have never been to a place like this before- It was definitely lively and served really good crabs. I came to visit my family from maryland and they love coming here for crabs and music. Their outdoor area gets really really crowded but it definitely holds a different vibe than other places i've been to. The owner was very friendly and most people seemed to know each other. I give this place a high rating for the quality of crabs we had. They were amazing- but I would say they are one of the pricier crabs my family has ordered. I took my mom and brother to get crabs here and was very satisfied. First of all, we had a really good price on crabs, only $40 a dozen. They were a mix of smalls, mediums, and larger, and I was happy that I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg to enjoy crabs so in my opinion it's a great price. The service was excellent. The ladies who waited on us were very attentive. I like the outdoor seating and how you have the pavilion to eat under. This place wasn't fancy, a laid back hidden gem in Frederick. We went on a rainy day, and there were still a few people there. I would imagine on a nice day it would be packed. Plenty of seating and the tables are spread out enough. I should have taken a photo of the crabs, but I was so excited I started eating right away! The BP can be a great place to relax on a Sunday afternoon but having not been there in over a year, we thought we'd go for the crab soup and a crab cake sandwich. I can report on the soup because the server never brought it. After we ordered drinks, the waitress almost returned to take our order but as she approached, she realized she did not have our drinks. She soon returned and took our orders. These were EASY orders---no special requests. She disappeared from the patio area for extended periods and once when she returned, she took a drink order from the table next to us. They had arrived after we placed our food order. She chatted with the pleasant folks at that table for a lengthy amount of time. I noticed this because I could see every other table and she was the only server. Eventually, the cook came out to the floor to let her know she had food waiting to be served. She said OK but didn't budge from her conversation. The cook turned around before entering the kitchen and noticed she had not made any move to retrieve food. She then returned with our sandwiches and with the food for the table next to us. She never mentioned our soup and we didn't either because it had already been TOO LONG. We didn't have any napkins or utensils; I retrieved some paper towels from behind the outdoor grill set up. The man at the table next to us had done a similar thing by going to another table of guests and asked if he could have their paper towels. The crab cakes were satisfactory but nothing special. After we finished our sandwiches and had not seen the server in a while, I approached the cook and asked if I could pay him. We were invited to watch our friends band, Special Delivery at the Buckeystown Pub on Saturday Aug 14, 2021. Hundreds were already there by 4 PM when the band began. Parking was difficult, but we discovered a second overflow parking area. There were no signs to direct folks there, you just have to know from experience. Luckily we had lawn chairs in the car since there was no where left to sit to watch the band. It was very crowded with a lot of people having fun! The one bartender at the Tiki bar serviced hundreds by herself, it was superhuman! We ordered a bucket of beer that puts 6 beers in a metal bucket filled with ice at a great price, wonderful! Ordering food was super difficult however. We walked to the indoor bar where there were three bartenders. That area was busy too but not nearly to the degree of the outside in the band area. However, there was a distinct difference of the indoor bartenders demeanor. They all seemed to be angry and the blonde woman was straight up rude to customers. We waited at the bar for someone to take our order for 20 minutes, finally the blond woman looked at us and we asked for crabcakes to which she replied "we don't have any" and she left without letting us make another food choice. When she returned she walked right by and ignored us while taking a new customers order. We waited 10 more minutes and no one would take our order. It seemed that local repeat customers were priority not sure. We had to leave to go get food somewhere else.. This place could be a goldmine if they had 5 people like the woman at Tiki bar. This business could really use its own Bar Rescue episode with Jon Taffer. read more

We ordered a half bushel of #1 crabs on Mother's Day. These were the worst crabs I have eaten in my life! The crabs were small, waterlogged and some were even burnt on the bottom! I believe they were left over from Saturday and were re-cooked. When I called to complain about my disappointment, I was told the manager was not in but she would call me the next day. Two weeks later and I still have not received a call back. Clearly they don't care about their customer complaints. read more

Buckeystown pub seems like the type of place where everyone knows each other and I really enjoy that about the restaurant. With great food but a little bit dated styling, this restaurant has survived because of the familial atmosphere and good food. My first time at the pub I ordered the Ruben and I was stunned! It was so much better than expected and in knowing that, I knew could come back and try other items and have them be the same quality. The service was exceptional. read more

Have lived in the area for 5 years and had never been to his place. Was told it was a dump and had heard a few not-so-great jokes about the place, so I've avoided it. Went there this afternoon to watch some football and had a great experience. Cold beer, hot food and good service. Great place to watch a game. It's your typical blue collar neighborhood bar. Had a very disappointing lunch at the Pub yesterday. First thing, we asked for ice tea, and the waitress brings it in a plastic cup. Like a clear solo cup. I understand if we are out on the patio to serve drinks in plastic, but this was inside the pub -- please, a real glass is expected when dining "in." No sweetener on the table -- had to ask. Next we ordered the crab cake sandwich with chips and pickle (so it says on the menu for $13) and an order of onion rings to share. We received a tiny crab cake on a disposable plastic plate on a roll that McDonald's would have rejected, with the thinnest slice of pale tomato and limp one piece of lettuce on the plastic plate. No chips or pickle to dress it up a bit. The onion rings also came on their own plastic disposable plate. You would think a place that is "famous" for their hard crabs would serve a decent crab cake. Well, no it was pitiful. It had a funky flavor that wasn't crab, it was not made with fresh crab meat, it was mixed to within an inch of it's life with filler and the only way to tell it was a crab cake was looking at it. We had to ask for tartar sauce to maybe make it edible (which came in a little plastic cup with a lid). There is nothing good to say about this crab cake. The onion rings were ok tasting but quite greasy. After we had just about finished the waitress came by and asked if we wanted our bag of chips that comes with it. We said, yes we do and took them with us since we were paying a premium for this sandwich. I had to go to the bar and borrow the salt shaker from one of the patrons there as there was no salt on the table. Almost $40 for the 2 of us for lunch. I have no problem paying for good food, but this was not something I wish to have again, ever. It is a good thing they have music and crabs on the patio or I would never come back. Unless you want a beer in a local dive bar, get your food elsewhere. Oh and did I say we were give a "packet" with one tiny napkin wrapped around a plastic fork and knife with a piece of tape to hold it together? Not even a substantial plastic fork and knife, but a tiny flimsy fork that if you actually tried to use it, it would have snapped in half. I had to (again) go to the bar and grab a few napkins since the one wrapped around the cutlery ripped up when trying to access the fork. Again, they really don't want repeat business. I don't know how they stay in business. I give it 2 stars as the onion rings were not hateful -- otherwise they would get zero. read more

Downgrading from 5 stars to 4 due to very slow service and a bacon cheeseburger that was tasty but had very little bacon and was not cooked to order. (Did not send the burger back because service was so slow.) BUT-- THERE IS A GREAT DEAL TO ENJOY AT BUCKEYSTOWN PUB. The rest of our meal was a superb slice of American cooking: Spiced shrimp: big, plump and perfectly seasoned. Fries: handcut and rich with potato flavor. (Note: these are soft fries-- suggest that you let the kitchen know if you want them fried crisp, or order the onion rings.) Onion rings: perfect ratio of onion to crust, fresh and crisp. Coleslaw: creamy and flavorful. Atmosphere is old-fashioned-- venerable bar, well-sized wooden booths in back room-- comfortable and relaxed. The crabs being delivered to the next table were large and looked delicious. On the basis of our experience, I'd suggest focusing on the crabs, shrimp and side dishes and visiting when you are able to take your time. read more

My fiancé and I love this spot! Stumbled across it during a drive through the country and have been back multiple times since. Crabs are great and they have a large variety of beer. Service is quick and bartenders are attentive. Looking forward to another visit soon. read more

Worst service I've ever had hands down! I ordered the 1/2 lb steamed shrimp. 10 mins later after my bf was almost done his food the waitress says mine takes 20 mins. So 45 mins and counting and some unfilled beers later still no food for me. Waitress was blonde about 50 yrs old. Spent more time watching tv. We asked if shrimp was ready and she said it takes long because they have to boil the water. read more

I have been several times and while the food is decent the service is AWFUL and the staff is rude. Every time! One waitress particularly who is serving the outside is slow and is very impatient. She looks at you like you have a problem. She seems like she would rather socialize than work. So rude. We would love a better experience considering a group of my friends and I regularly tube down the river and park at Buckeystown park which is right down the street. My husband and I also like stoping in when we are out riding our motorcycle but if service stays the same we are boycotting along with all of our friends b/c we all share the same experience. read more

This place is amazing. We stopped in on a Monday last week and had the crab legs and cream of crab soup. We were very pleased. The restaurant was super clean inside and out. We ate under the pavilion. The crab legs came out hot and were the best. Ya know, when you snap the leg and all the meat comes out at once! Yummy! We returned again this Sunday but found that they close at 8. Kitchen closed at 7. We thought they would be open later since it is now football season. We went to May's to get some more crab legs and we were not happy. We now know that if you want good food, you have to go early. Or at least before they close. read more

I had the curry half chicken, which was decent, but a little under seasoned. My impression of the food was that the cook was focusing more on being original than good. My wife went with her ladies riders group and loved it. So I was out riding with a buddy and decided to stop in and grab some lunch in the middle of the day on a weekday. The service was great, and the server/bartender was very attentive. There was only a few people in there which is probably why it was that way but I was very happy with that. My friend and I both ordered the same thing which was the mushroom Swiss burger. It came with hand cut french fries it was cooked exactly how we asked. Unbeknownst to us, it turned out to be a half pound burger that I could barely get my mouth around. It was fate that brought us to Buckeystown Pub. We had ordered a half bushels of crabs from another business near our home. I arrived to pick up my order only to discover they sold out of crabs and sold my order! I was frantic, panicked, and outraged. I didn't realize I drew attention from others when I expressed my anger to the person giving me apologies and trying to offer me a free bushel next time. A stranger came up to me and told me about Buckeystown Pub. Luckily, it was 13 minutes away. As soon as I arrived, a nice gentleman (Timmy T) who frequents Buckeystown Pub tells me how great the establishment is and how great the crabs are. The waitress greets me and lets me know that they can make half a bushel in 15 minutes. She offers me water, offers me paper to take with me home, and gives me advice on keeping the crabs fresh while driving back home. I was thankful for her excellent service. I was also impressed how clean and spacious the establishment was. Thanks to Buckeystown Pub for saving my dinner get together with our dear friends and we all kept raving about how these were the best crabs we ever had! It was so meaty and delicious!!! read more

Looks can be deceiving, place looked cool from the outside, went inside, looked like a cool crab shack inside. Band was way too loud for a place that small, couldn't even talk inside. Some sort of shady biker gang was there and looked at me like I didn't belong. Weird location for a dive bar. read more

We went twice for AUCE crabs. After the first time we thought we had found a new favorite place for AUCE crabs and beer in the Frederick area and were going to give it 5 stars. The second time we had a different server, and that's why we only give it 2 stars. We'll probably go back to our previous AUCE place in Frederick. Our first time at Buckeystown the crabs were a good size for AUCE (small to medium) and the server was very attentive. On the second visit, the crabs were cooked fine, but really very small and the server did not seem that interested. Too bad, other than that, we liked the place. read more

OK I know this is a local comfy hangout. I know that folks have to smoke SOMEWHERE, but even outdoors , under the covered patio, the smoke was absolutely horrible (they had turned the fans off for whatever reason..) even as a former smoker, the stench was really overwhelming. the food (we had the crab cake platter) was generous and a bit above average- lots of meat in the crab cakes, real fries (not fake crap), the cole slaw was creamy and not drippy. The hush puppies- a bit too greasy- maybe sat in oil too long after being pulled out of the deep fryer?. as for the beer: if you like the usual blah American brews- they are here and fairly priced. if you want something a bit richer or full bodied, good luck. Only Fat Tire even came close and u had to go to the indoor bar to get it. At the indoor bar, some female blond bartender REALLY sucked and had an attitude about it... well, that's ok because the tip we left reflected that we had to stand there for 12 minutes to get a bottle of beer (and we were not the only ones). The owner should have stopped schmoozing (Dick Johnson) and gone indoors to help his bar staff, especially on such a crazy busy night. as an aside, we were not the only patrons who were pissed off about Blondie's crappy attitude and service... if anyone knows the owner well, please drop him a BIG hint... read more

Been in here several times now, don't come for the All You Can Eat Crabs anytime close to 8PM, the kitchen seems irritated if you do so. Went last night and ordered all you can eat crabs and brought us out over 50 at one time obviously enough where they wouldn't have to cook anymore and clean their kitchen early. Don't expect for your server/waitress to come to your table more than twice an hour and they might be sober if you're lucky. Hole in the Wall/Biker Bar is what you're about to walk into. read more
