I stand by these guys 100%. They have always had my back when other companies have tried cheating me out of money. I have tried probably 5 or 6 other places around town, most all of them AAA certified, and they have all tried to scam me by telling me things needed to be fixed that have not. Most recently I went for an oil change at Elliott Tire & Service Center because I had a coupon, I came out of there with a piece of paper telling me I needed $1500 worth of work done on my 2006 car. So I go to Budd & Co and they are honest and trustworthy about what needs to be done, they explain numbers to me on the car, they are not afraid of giving me a fair diagnostic. I think these guys are terrific. The $1500 of work that Elliott Tire & Service Center told me needed to be done turned in a $35 fee at Budd & Co to look at the vehicle and I drove away carefree. Upon completion of the work, I had to ask for my old parts to be returned, but they didn't have them readily available - I was okay with a thorough inspection of the work done and seeing the new parts (they were all external engine parts - water pump, belt tensioner, etc. If they were internal parts, I would have had an issue. Friendly, calm, understanding staff. Convenient location. Decent prices on the parts (I could have bought them myself for less, but I'm not a mechanic, nor do I possess the time, tools, and shop space to perform moderate-scale, so you have to bite the bullet when it comes to parts prices). Their shop labor rate is average. If I'm ever experiencing mechanical issues with my truck again, there is a fair chance I will take it back to Budd & Company. If I could give 0 stars I would- DO NOT bring your car here. I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that had some issues with shifting gears and slipping, one day it just stopped shifting and grinded really bad. I brought my Jeep here, not only did it take them 6 days to just look at my truck, but I had to call them to figure out that they'd gotten to it. They told me that I NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION, "oh yeah man, that Jeep needs a new tranny." So professional. I wanted to get a new estimate from a guy in Portland that worked on my moms Jeep, so I rented a tow truck and grabbed it, the guy who worked in the shop originally said he'd help me get it on the bed then left me to do it by myself. Where I parked my tow was the only spot available and he came out and had the audacity to tell me that "he hoped that it wouldn't be here overnight because cars need to move out of the lot the truck is in front of." He was a total jerk. In conclusion, my Jeep needed a new clutch and they were gonna try to charge me probably $3000 for a new transmission + labor? Trust me. Go somewhere else. read more

This is the mechanic you hope to find when you move into a new city. My girlfriend had been using Budd & Company for years and said they had taken great care of her. I took her advice and brought my car in to them. They fixed my car quickly and for a much cheaper price than what the dealership was estimating. Since then I have continued to use Budd & Company as my main mechanic. I haven't had a single bad experience. The only downside (which is actually proof on how great these guys are) is that they are really busy. Make sure you call and get an appointment if you need to bring your car in. read more

Budd and Co are the best! I've had three trucks, all Toyota's including my current '97 Tacoma! I trust no one else with my vehicles now and since moving up the north end of Seattle, decided to continue to use Budd and Co! It's a drive but worth it for me. Just recently got my clutch replaced there and it feels like a new vehicle. The guys are all super nice, super knowledgable and very good at what they do. There's this old adage that you get what you pay for and while I've heard complaints that Budd and Co are overpriced, the work is always above standard and these guys will back up their work 100%!! They are always professional and thorough and explain each step of the repair process; estimate, execution, and charges. They want to tear up your vehicle to give you an estimate, that way they can price gouge you for the initial service in order to tell you it needs a massive repair (Upon realizing something didn't seem right with a over thousands dollars figure, I thought i'd be best to go else where) Sure enough a second opinion proved that this place is a classic dishonest bunch. They were already working on other cars but I told them I had to be at work in a few hours and they worked me in and patched up my tire in about 25 minutes, I was out in no time. I have used Budd & Co. on more than one occasion. This last and final time was the end for me. They are kind enough to talk to but they don't seem to ever listen to what I have to say or consider my requests. On one occasion my vehicle stalled right outside of their shop just after they said they didn't find anything wrong with it. Fair enough. The last time I went, they didn't put the part in I requested, and when I took it back to them to replace it with the correct one, the truck stopped running altogether. If I was the one who was stranded fine, I can deal with that, but when it's my fiancée, they get this less than positive review. read more

While the guys working here are very friendly, they definitely overcharged me. I brought my car in and told them I wasn't sure what the problem was, but informed them that it broke down on the interstate and described a few issues it was having (flickering radio and service lights at random times, trouble starting now and then, etc.) and right off the bat they charged me $120 before they even looked at the car. (Not sure why...) Later, they called to make sure it was okay to install a new battery because mine was clearly dying. I said yes, of course. When I went to pick up the car, my bill was over $400. Who knew replacing a few loose wires and putting in a new battery would cost so much... My boyfriend, my brother, and my dad weren't too happy when I told them how much I paid. "I could have put in a new battery for under $50!" So, obviously I was ripped off and won't be coming back. read more

Many moons ago, my father recommended I take my car to Budd's. Being as I was young and still rebelling, it was years before I visited the auto shop. (this may also be due to the fact that I did not have a car in my early twenties) When I purchased my beloved 1999 Subaru in 2006 my quest for the perfect dog taxi, Budd's became my go-to with car issues. After many, many visits, I always come away satisfied with the outcome - except once. My head gaskets blew (yay Subaru!) and I took my car to Budd's to see what they could do. This is a common and expensive repair that plagued the Outbacks during a few years of production. ~$1500 later, I left with my car, brand new head gaskets dancing in my head, excited to avoid another tow. Until a few day later when my car overheated and had to be towed, yet again. This time I was kinda pissed. But when I returned to Budd's to talk to Mike about it, he immediately tried to fix the problem, just like usual. The shop decided the engine was not worth trying to fix, so they took it out and replaced it with a fully refurb engine, perfect head gaskets, and lower mileage. This with no extra charge! I love the willingness of the shop to not only fix my car, but fix the rare mistake they make. My Sub is still running. at 155,000 miles, I just called Budd's for a tune up quote and to make an appointment. The car is running a bit rough, I'm bad at maintenance when it isn't being used for business. With the business about to start up again, I am excited to get the work done and my car running (relatively) smoothly again. read more

I've been bringing my '84 Dodge van here for years, and Mike has always done a great job helping me evaluate and troubleshoot my problems. Finding a good mechanic is like making a friend. You don't want to just call or show up in a panic because your car stopped working... chances are they are going to be busy, and not have time for you. I built my relationship with Budd & Co. over the years with many calm, courteous interactions. The payoff happened when my van stopped running a few days ago, just a block away from Budd & Co. I explained that my band needed the van the next day for an important gig. They looked at my van immediately and found a loose carburetor gasket which was causing the engine to run too rich. They tuned up the fuel mix, and even kept my van locked in the shop overnight, since all of my band equipment was inside. I really appreciate the fact that they helped me out in a timely fashion, and I'll keep brining my van here as long as it keeps running! read more

This place is great. I have to say that when I leave Seattle, this is going to be one of the places I miss most. These guys always do a great job with my Jetta, make sure I understand exactly what they want to do, and never push sales. I have recommended this place to a number of people. Granted, they are not going to offer basement prices, but the extra cost means they don't feel a need to sell you services you don't need. Besides, this place is busy enough that they don't need to invent business. One example: I took my car in to have a cracked rear view mirror fixed. They said that if they were to do it, they would have to replace the other piece (which would be around 80 bucks). They suggested that I just go to a glass place down the street and save some money. So, instead of paying 80 bucks (plus labor), I paid about 15 bucks at the glass shop. read more

I came in with a front end problem with the car that could not be fixed at another place I had taken it. At the third time taking it to this other place they said I would need a complete rebuild of the axle which would have been quite costly. Took it to Budd an Co and they fixed her right up and it didn't need a complete rebuild, only a few parts replaced. They are honest and do what it takes to get your car fixed reasonably. I trust them to give an accurate quote. It fixed the problem and I am so grateful. My only complaint is this is not the fastest place, and they didn't keep their projected deadlines. It took over a week to fix a problem that shouldn't have taken more than a couple of days to do. I had to do alot of following up and babysitting to see where they were with getting it done, never received a phone call initiated by them. In addition, they fixed half of the problem and "forgot" about the other thing I asked them to take care of. I got the impression they weren't really organized. read more

Jordan, While I appreciate the reply the fact remains that the noise was and continues to be very obvious. As I am the original owner I am acutely aware of the sound of my car. I could tell my car sounded different post the major service. I would not and most owners will not bring a car back to a repair ship if a problem did not exist. Having your service team take a another listen for free is a forgone conclusion. If the customer is not satisfied your responsibility is to work with the customer, within reason, to ensure the customer is satisfied. I am resolute with respect to my earlier comment. read more

Mike is Great for saying bring the car back but why can't this be fix the first time. As I have spoken to several people I am not the first. They seem to make customers happy but they almost always refuse to do work for me. There was this one time when I made an "appointment" four days in advance to get an alignment done that worked out just fine, but every other time I've called or stopped in, they told me they are too busy to work on my Chevy or my Honda. It's really quite irritating! And their perspective on "appointment" is more like "we'll work on it some time that day. In my world, an "appointment" is a scheduled event where I show up, they do the work, and I leave with my car. I just really dislike the way they do business. If you still have a gas-burner, this is the place in Seattle - professional, kind, and courteous to a fault. Friday night on the way home my transmission dies. Monday I drop off the car, and for a replacement transmission+clutch+flywheel including labor I was given an estimate of $1770+/-. This morning I called to check on the rig, and they shamefacedly told me that the previous mechanic (another shop) had failed to bolt things back together properly after a clutch replacement and that while the clutch+flywheel was needed, the already-installed new transmission *wasn't* and I wouldn't be charged for it, as they should have spotted that before opening things up. Out the door at $1,067.84. I have *no* complaints about Budd & Co and have used them on other vehicles - getting consistently better prices and service than I am accustomed to. I picked these guys to take my car to as they're authorized to do diagnostics for the emissions waiver (as of writing this), and based on overall positive reviews here on Yelp (thanks guys!) I took my car here after I failed the emissions test. When I first called and asked if they could do the requisite inspection (a min of $150 in diagnostics/repair), he told me they were scheduling 2 weeks out - I said I needed it to renew my registration (which I did!), and he worked me in the very next morning. Crack of dawn, but at least they're nearby. Guy that greeted me at the counter was very pleasant, personable, just overall friendly (in contrast the the guy apparently working there who was behind me on the street, honking at me as I tried to figure out where this place's driveway was. NEVER do that. You don't know when that person in front of you might be one of your customers! I speak from my experience as a pizza delivery driver many years ago. I mentioned it to the guy up front and he said he'd take care of it). I also asked if they could take a look at another issue my car was having - only if they had time, since they had already apparently squeezed me in and were expecting it to take all day. Well, had my car back before noon, AND they took a look at (and quoted me for) the other issue. He was happy to explain the other issue in more detail, and never made me feel like an idiot because cars aren't my thing (if anything, he seemed like a hobbyist being asked about his hobby). Same reasons for emissions failure as last time when I took it to another place. Charge was the requisite $150 in diagnostics, plus labor and tax, so total was about $170. Straightforward. I already knew what was wrong with it going in, and I'm really glad he didn't pressure me to get it fixed - he already understood the repairs are more than the car is worth. I appreciate that. (Bad enough broke students with old cars have to do this emissions dance - no need to rub in the fact we can't afford to fix the problems). I took it to Firestone last year and got the impression that I NEEDED to fix it, and my car was slowly dying. Though, I've driven it 2 years since then with almost no issues, so... Still taking my car into my regular mechanic (who isn't authorized to do the waiver thing, hence going here) for a second opinion/quote on the other issue - not that I don't trust Budd & Co - I've just been going to the other guy since I moved here. So yeah, A+++ if you need your emissions waiver. Fast, friendly, straightforward. read more

While I cannot attest the their mechanical abilities, I can say that Mike at Budd And Company is a stand up guy and will tell you like it is. I brought my newly (used) purchased truck in as it had broke down shortly after I bought it. It was clear to me that the seller had mislead me. Shortly after having it towed to Budd And Company, Mike called with some terrible news. The truck would cost more to repair than I had paid for it. In addition, someone had tampered with the trucks computer history and they could give no assurance that the transmission repairs would hold, confirming what I had already known. I'd been ripped off. He allowed me 24 hours to think about a direction. Together we decided the vehicle would be unsafe to put back on the road and we would scrap it. In order to do this, Mike needed a title. But the truck was so new to me I didn't yet have the title. Mike helped me work through that too. Though it took some time as I was new to this process and didn't fully understand it. I brought my truck to Budd and Co. to have the brake lights fixed. I left it with Budd and called back the next day. They were waiting to call me back to hear from a Ford dealer if the issue they discovered was recall related. It was. They got my brake lights working and let me know that a Ford dealer could do the recall related work. The price for this service was more than competitive. Service is inconsistent based on who works on your car and they seem to be under the belief that they know more than the car owner. I had these guys do a major tune up on my Ford Explorer. When I picked up the car something did not sound right, i.e the engine did sound smooth. I am the original owner and are very atuned to a well functioning engine. When I told them of the unusal sound they told me they did not hear anything. Later it was determined by another service repair shop that they misaligned the bearings resulting in the sound I heard. When bearings are misaligned the result is grinding which results in negative engine wear. Bottom line: while they have been in business for years they are NOT focussed on ultimate customer service and professional repair. I will not ever even as a last resort take any of my cars to this shop. BEWARE!!! read more

Have taken both American and imported cars to Budds for years, convenient, courteous and competent. Had an issue after a recently completed repair, wasn't clear if a part failed because they installed it incorrectly or if another problem was the cause, my car has 140k miles on it... They were concerned, dug in, replaced the part and WITHOUT me even asking comp'ed the re-fix. No one is perfect, it isn't clear to me that this was their fault, didn't matter they just owned it. A test of the best customer service is how they deal with stuff that inevitably goes wrong. Passed with flying colors. In reading other comments there are complaints about them charging for diagnosis. I have paid them to look into problems i couldn't pin point, I believe this is fair and their repair prices are not inflated (as they would have to be) for time spent figuring out what is wrong. read more
