We stopped by Buddy Lou's on our way to DC and thought it was a very interesting shop/restaurant. Antique on the first floor and restaurant on the second floor. Lots of people with dogs were dining at this restaurant. Seems like they may have a small special menu for the doggies. As for our meal, we got crab cake sandwich which I loved. Very fresh and meaty crab cake. The sauce was delicious too. Would recommend this to crab meat lover. My husband got the avocado toast that's on the appetizer menu. Quite disappointing as the avocado was clearly raw and the bread was mediocre. Not worth $12 in my opinion. Would probably try their burger next time which is only $3 more. I also tried the dragon berry mojito. It was a refreshing drink but can't taste any alcohol. It was more like a sprit soda with mint and strawberry. Maybe order something else if you want something stronger. Overall, not bad but would probably get other food next time. PS: you need to pay for parking in the lot. This place is wonderful! It is one of the places you find and want to tell all your friends to stop at. We travel with our dog all the time and are always on the lookout for a place that will welcome them like they welcome us. This place is a place like that! Dogs are central to visiting this place. There are dogs inside and out. They have their own menu and get a free pup-cup of ice cream at the end of the meal. The food for humans is great too! We had the biscuits and gravy, don't miss them!! Sunday brunch was fabulous. The only thing better than the food was the friendly staff!! From the folks that greeted us and sat us at a table, to the many servers that stopped by to check on us. Friendliest of all was the manger who talked with us and shared information on the town and the restaurant, and where the love for dogs comes from. We highly recommend this special place. read more

Had the fries with crab meat, cheddar and garlic aoli. The hubs had cherry pulled pork sandwich, baked beans and coleslaw. Neither of us were disappointed; SO tasty! The crab, cheddar and aoli would be epic on a baked potato!! We sat outside so I could pet the puppies that brought their owners, if they passed our table. A serious case of "eyes bigger than belly" happened here tonight as I sat down with their martini special. Which by the way, was delicious. How could a cucumber vodka martini sitting on the outside deck in the setting sun not be delicious? I ordered two appetizers thinking that they would be smaller portions. Yeah, they were not. The problem was that they were both great and I overate. A nice basket of hot wings arrived first. Not too hot but with just enough "hot" to be interesting. Wonderfully not swimming in sauce and served with celery sticks and a small pot of blue cheese dressing. Eight meaty wings is a nice portion. And then my second course arrived, a basked of fried chicken livers. Some big pieces, some smaller pieces, all of them perfectly crispy and delicious. A few that were more than bite sized and needing to be cut in half before dipping in the tangy sauce. After the wings and this big serving, I ended up leaving nearly half of them behind. Bummer because they were delicious. It was nice to sit outside and I had great service. Buddy Lou's was a pleasant five star meal for my final stop in the Hagerstown area on this trip. I have never been to an antique shop/restaurant ever! So my friend and I decided to take a trip to West VA and explore a new remote area. A bunch of locals said Buddy Lous is the perfect place to check out! So upon arrival we saw this gorgeous antique filled well decorated yard that I really just wanted to get lost in! The inside gets even better, this restaurant is full of antiques! The overall aesthetic gets 1009999999/10! The food I gotta say above average. The mac and cheese hit a craving but its nothing special. The drinks here were strong but kind of hard to sip on, I found myself forcing a chug every now and then. We also explored the antique shop and found so many cool pieces for good prices! I'd love to return to shop and maybe grab some dessert. read more

This is one of those kitchey knick-knacks forever kind of place. It's next to a 252-mi trail and 24-mi paved trail, so it's great to get out for a walk along the Potomac River after eating some heavy food. Hubby and I shared the cream of crab soup (very rich) and the crab fries and still took a box to go. Both were tasty, but we probably would have been better off with a side salad paired with the fries. I don't think small salads were an option. Note that you might want to ask for the garlic aioli on the side. Sort of like salad dressing, you might want to decide how much it needs. Pretty potent! Very friendly wait staff. Being from DC, I can't say the cooking here is exceptional, but the quality is great and portion sizes are huge for the price! Lovely dog friendly patio and super nice and friendly server! I stopped at buddylou's for a good meal to eat towards the end of a long roadtrip. They certainly delivered on the food! I got the crab cake sandwich and substituted the brioche bun for rye bread. I personally appreciated their willingness to make this swap for me and throughly enjoyed the meal. Fries were fresh, tho I wish they had a bit more crisp on them. The place has an old school rustic antique theme filled with many trinkets and items you can spend lots of time looking at or finding. Service was good overall, my waiter very friendly kinda like a lot of interactions I get with people when I'm in the south. Some other hosts seemed on the more direct or on shyer side, preventing a more impactful connection. After the meal, I also checked out the candy/ice cream store they had in the basement and enjoyed looking around and finding old school sweets. Great place to stop, if you are traveling 70 towards DC. Easy on and off the highway (only 1.5 miles). Has both indoor and outdoor seating (covered & uncovered). Rails to trail (C&O Canal - I think) is right there. On street parking and a parking lot behind it. The menu is limited but has something for everyone, salads, burgers, sandwiches and a couple of vegetarian dishes. Pet friendly (limited to outside seating), and they have "adult" milkshakes and some ice cream too. The place is nicely decorated with lots of antiques; got to show my daughter a rotary phone, old time washing machine, stove and refrigerator. We will definitely stop back again the next time we are heading south. Give it a shot. read more

Unfortunately today's brunch was only a 2. We have loved this restaurant, & often stop by on our way through town. With the server's suggestion, I ordered chicken & waffles. It might have been a fresh breast of chicken but the breading/coating was overcooked, tasted burnt, inedible. I did not complain to the server because I was with my guest. After that first burnt bite, I picked off every bit of the breading so I could @ least eat the chicken. The waffle was nothing special. Just tasted like a simple pancake mix, no flavor & very dry. My friend got the walnut encrusted french toast. She expected it to be thick bread, it was very thin white bread. Her bacon was not fully cooked. Not our best day @ Buddy Lou's. read more

The only thing that was off this trip was the menu- I had never been there on a Sunday before and wasn't aware of the menu changes on that day. Obviously the people next to my fiancé and I weren't aware either, and advised their dining companions very loudly that they had no idea of the Sunday menu change. Like us, they came from out of town for a special family occasion. So I'd give it 5 stars as long as they add something online (if there isn't) about the smaller menu on Sundays. Highly recommend this great spot. We stopped on a road trip with our pup and he was treated like royalty. Completely dog friendly inside and out. The human food was fantastic too. Well they were short on help so we had to wait the manager tried to adjust once we were seated I ordered the Chicken liver as a appetizer, they looked pretty had the crunch but bland on flavor and seasoning. Then the lunch entrees after driving 5 hours heading to a graduation and my daughter suggesting this place because of the ratings it was a big let down! My wife and mom got the Korean BBQ wings tasted like plain BBQ, my daughter ordered buffalo wings which were ok, grandson got the chicken fingers and fries and I received a meat deficient Reuben Sandwich and fries.the highlight the doggies were able to done with up and eat their burger and veggies. They enjoyed. This place was just a meal out of necessity and most likely won't be back Hancock. Convenient and yummy place to eat. This restaurant does it all with an antique shop in the basement, ice cream shop outside, and they even do bike tours. There is seating for the restaurant both in and outside. Most of the food is cooked to order so you can take things out for dietary reasons. I ordered the shrimp and grits with no bacon and poached eggs hard. The dish was super yummy with corn and scallions ontop of the grits. My partner ordered the waffles which was super sweet. For example, I ordered the bacon wrapped scallops, the scallops were first wrapped in dates??? And then bacon? The whole thing tasted like sautéed dates. We live in the area and have been to Buddy Lou's over the years probably 6 times or so. Last night we got a sit at our table pretty quick. That was the highlight. We didn't see a list of beers so we asked our waitress. Really wasn't the best selection. So I got an Angry Orchard and my husband got an ice tea. Service was pretty slow and took awhile to just get our drinks. We ordered our dinner I ordered a cup of Crab soup and a Greek salad with grilled chicken my husband ordered a cup of chili and a BBQ salad with chicken. The soup never comes separately but with the salads and it's not the right salad for me. The waitress takes the salad to get me the correct salad. So I tasted the crab soup and it's barely warm plus it needs crab in it. The chili was ok. We waited for the restaurant to correct the salad which took too long and my husband finished his meal. The waitress came back then to say she was sorry for the delay. I told her to forget the salad just get us the check. She cones back and said her manager took the salad off the check. Really! She thanked me for being so nice. My husband and I gave her 20% tip because we wasn't sure who made the mistakes! read more

The crab cake sandwich was mid at best, not what you expected from a MD restaurant. The wife got the eggs Benedict which she's never had but said it was good, except for it also starting to get cold. BuddyLou's has always been one of my favorite stops headed back to DC from the Maryland mountains. But it's really fallen apart in the service category. Today was no exception. I arrived at a little before 6 pm and was told there would be a 25-30 minute wait -- even though half the tables were empty. I asked why and was told "the kitchen is backed up." I asked if I could at least be seated and the greeter said no, that was against policy. I think I need to re-think other options going forward. This is the third or fourth time it's been clear BuddyLou's is understaffed and unable to provide decent service. read more

It hurts to rate this place 3 stars because I loved so much about it. The decor is great, the servers were SO nice and friendly, and my friend and I had fun looking at all the antiques after we ate. But... our food wasn't great :(. We had fried lion's mane mushroom as an appetizer, which I did think was pretty good and a fun menu item I've never seen anywhere else. However, my beyond burger wasn't very flavorful and the bun it came on was super dry. My friend got the pork belly BLT and also didn't enjoy it. The fries were good though! Very warm and inviting atmosphere. Staff was upbeat and friendly. Glad Yelp played a hand in the decision, otherwise, we might have passed through the area without stopping. The reviews caught my interest, but once we pulled up, I almost said forget it since I didn't think I was all about eating inside an antique store. Once inside, all of those doubtful thoughts quickly subsided. Everything fell into place, thanks to the helpful staff and great menu options. One could opt for a stick to your ribs kind of meal, or a more lighter, yet loaded with flavor option. Homemade soups , dressings, and desserts held my attention. The dining area is divided into several sections and some of the tables and chairs are barrel shaped. Overall, it is nicely decorated, and displays a fun assortment of pictures, signs etc. The antique store is separate and is located on the top floor of the building. Warmer weather brings crowds to the outside patio for live music. Buddy Lou's is a place I plan to visit anytime I am in the area. read more

Buddy Lou's is a funky spot off of I-70 in Hancock, MD. It's a restaurant and an antique store. An outdoors deck overlooks the C&O Canal. I've tried both the Buddy Lou Burger (with fries) and the Pulled Pork Barbecue special (with chips). Both were very good. An excellent appetizer was the Fried Green Tomatoes. All around are vintage televisions showing vintage TV shows. Recommended for travelers on I-68 and I-70 as well as cyclists and hikers on the C&O Canal Trail. read more

I hate deducting a star when it can't be controlled by the restaurant. Please know this is basically a 5 star date, but a 4 Star on me. I think I've traveled up and down I-70 3,120 times (52 * 2)(30). Id add about 800 to make it an even 4,000 to include game road trips & such. My point, I've never even seen or heard of Buddy Lou's. It's literally off the highway. Not saying there's a lot of scenery in Hancock, but man how could I miss this? First off, it's a super cute place. The way they use retro decor, 1950's music and all the colored chairs is my cup of tea. Some tables are red, blue or yellow and all the tables are sporadic in that one might end up being a refurbished sewing table. There's a antique shop below and the windows are trimmed with strips of old flannel sleeves cut off at the shoulder to make a valence. Big fan. Nostalgic to say the least. We chose to sit outside and that was my mistake because I got spooked by Charlotte and her web being spun amongst the mosquitoes prior to contracting West Nile. Must have been the rain and mugginess. I was very hungry and it was about 8:00, so at this point I was starving. I wanted to order one of everything like the Miami Dolphins player you told me about. The menu is basically apps, bar food and a few select entrees with desserts and specials. Their drink menu is the same size as their food menu. Our first waitress got us started until our second waitress came back. Both knowledgeable. First waitress explained everything; seemed like she could have been a staff member for a long time. We started with sweet tea and a few apps. I selected fried green tomatoes with horseradish sauce and cocktail sauce. Wasn't sure, but I now know cocktail sauce goes well with tomatoes. Makes sense. Also, an order or crab fries which could've just been it for me. That's how BIG they were. I also ordered the bbq chicken taco salad which I can't wait to have more of for lunch today because that's how BIG it was. Very tasty! The avocado was good on it. Full of belly laughs and itching my legs off, dinner was great! Luckily, the ride back home created some space for dessert and I opted for the sweetness at home in the luxury of my own bed. read more

Not sure what is going on with the management of this place. I have had previously great experiences here but not so this Mothers Day. My wife and I had reservations for 5:30 PM and arrived with the understanding the Mothers Day is a very busy day for restaurants. The place looked to be a little under half of capacity but they appeared to be badly understaffed. We were sat at a table at just about 5:30 PM. No one came to our table at all. Not water or "Sorry we are busy so service will be delayed" or anything. To make matters worse a party of 6 or so people arrived after us and got prompt attention. Another couple of 2 that arrived just after us seemed to be getting the same treatment... but at least someone brought them water. Overheard them ask the hostess if they were going to get served and were told that the server was busy with the bar and tables. We left after 30 minutes - at that point this place looked so poorly run that I was beginning to question my faith in there ability to prepare my food. In defense of the staff, the hostess was VERY kind and it appeared that there was only one waiter serving all the tables - there seems to be a major management issue here. This is an assumption on my part, but there was what appeared to be a manager roaming around and at times telling others what to do. But I never saw her pitch in to help at all - sorry but leaving tables without even acknowledging them for 30 minutes is unacceptable. FWIW we had a great experience at a restaurant less than 30 minutes away (which I won't name in this review but will do a Yelp review). BuddyLou's is a cool concept and fun atmosphere with great memories for me... but unfortunately no future visits. read more

We let him know we did not, at which point he informed us they were not taking walk-ins. We were looking forward to a dinner here, I guess they didn't feel the same way. My husband had the skillet and that was basically overdone dry eggs over potatoes, no bacon, nothing. Seriously a 5 year old could have done a better job. Our waiter Joe was nice so we paid him a tip, for it wasn't his fault. We told the manager about our horrible experience and she had the nerve to say "oh your meals went to another table" really?!
