Im so happy i chose to come to Buddy! This is a great place to catch up with a friend or go on a date. The restaurant is so cute. The food is amazing and the drink selection is large enough to have a choice, but not too large that you feel overwhelmed. A friend and I came to share a few bites, all of which were vegetarian and a glass of wine, and I loved every dish! We had the corn fritters, I of course removed the fish row on top . It was so nice like a doughnut and the sauces paired so well with it. It did not feel oily. We also got the trumpet mushrooms, which were just such an experience flavour wise they were sweet salty. Had Asian flavours had western flavours. I was confused in a good way. We also got the brownie which was the only dessert option and was just amazing! We were really impressed by the source on top which taste like melted ice cream, but thick. All the servers were so kind and attentive. I'll 100% be back and I would 100% order all of these dishes again!

Came here on a Thursday night around 9 with no wait, they close at 10pm but we were able to order food & drinks still. The space is nice and relatively quiet at this time, making good for conversation. 20% tip automatically added. My group ordered a glass of wine each and the corn fritters, trumpet mushrooms, and cucumber and stone fruit salad. Everything was pretty solid, but the sauce of the trumpet mushrooms and the cucumber salad were perfection!

Buddy is one of many natural wine bars in the city. It features a classy yet comfortable interior and an enticing menu of small bites. Unfortunately, I left Buddy disappointed by both the wine selection and the quality of the food. For one, the wine list is quite small and not descriptive enough for newer wine drinkers (myself included). I also found the staff unhelpful in guiding me toward a glass that suited my taste. That's not to say the wines themselves are bad. I just wish they took more care in helping customers make an informed choice. The bites were another letdown. While none of them were terrible, the quality didn't justify the price. Overall, I'd recommend skipping the food and perhaps stopping by only if you already know a thing or two about wine. Corn Fritters: A warm, hearty, and visually appealing dish to start with. The garnishes are the saving grace here; the basil oil adds a herbaceous flair, while the roe brings a satisfying umami kick. Fried Chicken Wings: An unpleasant dish. The exterior forms a dense crust that's genuinely difficult to bite through, and the flavor overall is far too tart. Trumpet Shrooms: A delight after the last dish. The mushrooms are wonderfully meaty, and while the accompaniments are nice, they don't do much to elevate the dish further.

I arrived early on a Friday evening and the outside seating was already filled. Inside was lovely and intimate - a friend and I sat on a booth table. We came in for some light bites and a glass of wine. Their selection is really lovely and they let us try a couple of options before settling on an orange wine. To eat, we had the trumpet mushrooms, corn fritters, lamb shank, and panna cotta. The trumpet mushrooms knocked me out (in a good way), and I'll never stop dreaming about these. The mushrooms are a little heavier but paired with a nice, creamier sauce and a slight sweetness from the feta and the nuts were perfection. The panna cotta was also amazing - slightly tart from the passion fruit and light. The perfect end do a phenomenal meal. The service, the vibe, the food - absolutely stunning and would definitely come back with my partner next time!

Super cute wine bar in the Mission! The wine was fine, the staff were extremely nice/helpful, and it was a fun restaurant for a Tuesday night drink. We got there around 7:00 and were seated immediately. Our server recommended the mushrooms and they were DELICIOUS. The mushrooms were a good texture, the walnut salsa added a little crunch and nuttiness, the french feta was soft and delicious, and the honey gave some sweetness at the end. Truly my favorite part and I could not recommend them more.

Ilna at Buddy Resy Reservation: Came here for dinner under a reservation for "Ilna at Buddy" on a Sunday night. Enjoyed the vibes and atmosphere and music(somewhat loud and low lighting). We tried the scallops & tostada(first photo), stuffed squid with duck fried rice (2nd photo), and short rib over risotto(3rd photo). Our favorite dish was the stuffed squid :). Overall the experience was great, wait staff were attentive, but small bites are just not our favorite style of meals. Can't fault Ilna, so I give Ilna at Buddy a 5/5

Buddy Bar is one of those spots I've become a big fan of. Nestled in the Mission, it's quickly become one of our favorite dining stops whenever we're in the neighborhood. It strikes that rare balance: a casual but well-appointed atmosphere, staff who are not just knowledgeable but clearly enthusiastic about what they do, and food and drinks that are inventive without ever tipping into pretension. We've now been a couple of times, and each visit has been a reminder of why Buddy stands out. The menu changes quite a bit between visits, which makes going back genuinely exciting. Some staples remain--anchoring the experience--but the new additions have always been fantastic, each one crafted with real thought and flair. Both times, we've insisted on what has become our go-to move: letting the staff guide us through dealer's choice. It's the best way to experience Buddy, because you don't just get food--you get the perspective and excitement of the team who know it best. Every dish they suggested was a hit. On one visit, that lineup included Za'atar Pommes Dauphine (crispy potato puffs with labneh and pickles), Yogurt Dumplings with herbs and spiced oil, and Lentils en Papillote served with mushrooms and bright pickled accents. Another night, we had their crisp Fried Chicken, a delicate Kafta Wrap tucked into phyllo with herbs and pickled onion, and the show-stopping Habibi Tiramisu, layered with cold brew, cardamom, orange blossom, pistachio, and topped with a cloud of kataifi. Each dish felt inventive yet grounded--familiar flavors given new dimension, plated with care but never overproduced. And while we usually lean toward interesting wine pairings (Buddy has a great list of natural leaning wines), at our visits we embraced the cocktail program. True to form, we left it to the staff, asking for dealer's choice all the way through. Every single cocktail was spot-on--balanced, creative, and well matched to the food--even if we don't actually know what they were called. That sense of trust, and the payoff it brings, is part of what makes Buddy special. In the end, Buddy Bar manages to cover the spectrum. It's a fantastic casual stop when you want inventive dishes or a well-made drink. But it also shines as a spot for a date night or a dinner with friends, where the energy of the room, the thought behind the food, and the warmth of the staff come together in just the right way. For us, it's become one of those Mission places we can't help but keep coming back to.

Since moving away from SF, I think about these trumpet mushrooms at least biweekly... Buddy is a gem of a wine bar with delicious cocktails and tasty bites. The place itself has quite a cozy, intimate ambiance at night and it's a great location to catch up with a friend or for a date. Service is super friendly and the staff is very knowledgeable about menu offerings.

I recently came for happy hour and ended up getting food and calling it dinner as well after seeing the exciting food menu. We started off with a glass of their red wine and shared the corn fritters, halibut crudo, and cauliflower hummus. Everything was delicious and I especially loved the shiso leaf with the crudo. We were pretty full already but got the chocolate brownie as well which was the perfect sweet ending. Loved the crunchy halvah sprinkles with cocoa nibs on top!

This was a cute spot to start a Friday evening! Wine options were great, they have orange wine which we both had and was good. Their service was also top notch! Only downside was no Happy Hour deals. I would love more vegetarian and appetizer options but the plates we did try were beautifully plated and clearly used fresh, high-quality ingredients. I cannot recommend the brownie enough! It was a last minute add on but truly the star of the show. read more

Had a light lunch with beer and wine. Crudo, wings, and olives. All were good but not overwhelming. Crudo was served in a bowl which made scooping it out a bit awkward. The majority of the olives were very tiny and we didn't bother to finish them as they were mostly pits anyways. 20% tip included in bill for a party of two on a slow lunch day is excessive imo. This place is great for grabbing a bite before heading to a film nearby. The portion size is small, but the substance is incredibly demure and mindful. The setup is also very cute with an alluring wine selection on the shelves. A great niche place for classy snacks. read more

Wanted to check out Buddy as a place to hang out and grab some pre-dinner drinks/snacks. Dinner happened to be in the Mission so we ended up swinging by at around 6ish. There's some street parking nearby in the residential neighborhoods, however, parking may be a bit of a struggle on weekends. The restaurant is extremely new (just opened) and features wine/wine cocktails and some upscale bar food. There's an open kitchen and a relatively small-ish dining room. Max capacity would probably be a bit over 30 (if all seats were taken including the bar). Luckily, we were seated immediately because they don't take reservations. We ordered the espodol and tonic and the lil fizz, both of which were very enjoyable. Non-wine drinkers will probably enjoy the wine cocktails. The big clear ice cube in the cocktails was unexpected and I was a fan lol. We ordered the tuna confit to share. It came with a soft-boiled egg on a bed of rosamarina, tuna and pepperoncini caesar dressing. Saltines were also supplied on the side. I'm a sucker for saltines so that was great lol. The rosamarina was a bit salty but you can control the amount applied to each bite so not too much of a complaint there. All in all, pleasant atmosphere, good drinks and good food. One of my goals this year is to visit more wine bars in sf. Buddy had been on the top of my list, mostly because of the cute name. We made a reservation the day before for 4 people and was seated in this cute secluded area with another table. Got a bottle of the orange wine and a few bites to eat. The wine was good but nothing too special. The food was different was definitely tasty. My favorite was the trumpet mushrooms. read more

Really cute wine bar, with an excellent wine menu. Try one of their chilled reds. The Roasted Trumpet Shrooms were delicious! Probably the best I've had. It was filling with a lovely honey tasting sauce and paired well with the broccolini. The service was prompt. We made a reservation on a Sat night. New wine bar in mission area. This was my second time coming here. The food has been good and beautifully presented both times, but seems to have improved this visit (4/10/22). They have a lot of low alcohol and even no alcohol options which is good for me because I can't really drink. I've yet to eat anything I didn't like here but the trumpet mushroom dish is an amazing mix of sweet and spicy and has meaty and crunchy textures. Perfect combo. I am looking forward to menu changes in the future to see what else they come up with. Service is great - they seem to be well staffed and everyone seems genuinely pleased to be there and doing what they're doing, be it cooking or recommending drinks or plates. Will be coming again, 10/10. read more

The food was a bit underwhelming for the cost (I spent about $250, tip already included) but the drinks were delish and the service was great too. We had the stone fruit & early girls (pass), halibut crudo (take it or leave it but refreshing), gougeres (underwhelming!), roasted trumpet shrooms (fave dish! Like adult candy), fried mortadella Sammy (yummy, obvi), and the chocolate brownie (humble but good). My fave cocktail was the watermelon crush. I'd say this is a cute date spot for drinks and maybe an app before dinner. I'd be back to catch up with some girlfriends for a drink. read more

Great vibe, delicious wine and cocktail list, but the food menu was miss after miss. We started with the Bread and Butter. No butter here; instead, a pecorino doused apple glaze - low on apple and flavor. We struggled in particular with the Whitefish tonnato, which was also covered in cheese (with fish?) and a soft egg with spicy red sauce. The "Shrooms" dish felt was reachy -- with unnecessary goat cheese and clashing cacophony of flavors and textures. The beans and greens helped soften the blows, so long as you're not too averted to salt. All in all, the wine sang beautifully, and we truly enjoyed ourselves in the space. While we personally struggled through the concept and execution of 5 out of 6 dishes, we'd come back for for more wine and cocktails, and to try a new and updated menu. read more

A cute wine bar with excellent food and cocktails. The mortadella sandwich is their "signature" food item, but really I think it's overrated (but filling), it just looks good in a picture. However, everything else I had here was incredible. A great cocktail and bites, and a pudding dessert that actually made me exclaim "wow!" after a single bite. Come here, get a drink, and focus on the small bites and dessert menu, skip the sandwich. read more

I can not say enough about how unique and delicious this place is! I also ordered the stone fruit and early girls which is probably one of the tastiest salads I have ever eaten!!! The smoked goat cheese with the tomatoes i want to lick my plate. The Gougères were two salty perfect bites. Staff are friendly and the person behind the bar which is where I always sit whenever I can, was super helpful in giving me his favorites on bites. Glad i listened. This wine menu, too! I truly enjoyed myself here. I was unable to try the food due to them not serving food on Wednesday, but the drinks and service that I had was excellent. The service was excellent, and I witnessed at one point the waiter explaining all the different drink types and wines on the shelf. It feels like I'm at home in this atmosphere. Wines and ports really retain their flavor well through the milk clarifying process and rounds out bitter notes to make it very palatable. Throughly happy with this milk punch. read more

Marking this down as cozy, lively spot for drinks and socializing! Came in on a busy Saturday night with a friend and was seated very quickly. Their wine selection extends beyond what's on the menu. What truly impressed me was the creativeness of their munchies! We had a hard time choosing, but ended up going with the trumpet mushrooms and that was divine- such novel flavor combinations, but balanced at that. Hostess very unhelpful attitude. She lied about a seat at the bar being unavailable "because it was reserved" but was corrected by a coworker. She made up incorrect answers to customer's questions about the food because she was too lazy to confirm with the chef, and made clear that she had no patience for customer questions. This sort of negative and unwelcoming vibe can only hurt the restaurant. read more

Great little wine bar with delicious food. They had a quirky bit quality selection of wine. One with a foul cheese odor that nevertheless tasted great, and one called couple goals. The beef appetizer and salads were particularly delicious and importantly, quality bread and service. read more

Lover Buddy! The wines and low ABV cocktails were incredible but the star was the food. Radishes with smoked oyster ranch, gougeres with trout roe and the standout, trumpet mushrooms with truffle honey, walnut salsa and French feta. Chef Sean and his crew were a delight and for me, the only place to sit is the bar with a view of the small open kitchen. Can't wait to return and eat everything else they cook. read more

Agree w Mike B for the most part. Mortadella sando didn't work for me either. Sounded like a good idea but it's wet, too acidic and the mortadella gets lost. With that said and out of the way: STAR TO US WAS THE TRUMPET MUSHROOM. EXCEPTIONAL AND WORTH COMING BACK FOR. Also stellar hard working knowledgeable staff, friendly vibes, and the best low ABV cocktail program in city. Thoughtfully unique by design. Well done. read more

This is the second place on this visit that's charging an extra 5% fee so that their employees can have a living wage and health insurance, which absolutely, every employee should have. With the prices they charge, they should already be able to do that, though. Visited Buddy during lunch hour with high expectations, but left feeling disappointed by the execution of what seemed like creative concepts. Started with the corn fritters, which unfortunately were unlike any corn fritters I've encountered - and not in a good way. The corn was completely mushed and mixed with flour into dense balls where you couldn't see actual corn kernels. The corn flavor was barely detectable, replaced by an oddly bitter taste that clashed with the smoked trout roe and crème fraîche. The combination simply didn't work together harmoniously. The yellowfin crudo was decent but unremarkable - a bit on the sweet side with nothing particularly memorable to distinguish it from similar dishes elsewhere. The trumpet mushrooms showed promise as a delicate dish, but again suffered from an overly sweet sauce that overwhelmed the subtle mushroom flavors. The fried chicken wings were by far the worst dish we ordered. While the chicken itself wasn't dry, the batter was impossibly thick and hard to bite through - completely ruining what could have been a decent dish. This was the most disappointing item of the meal. One positive note: the bartender worked hard to accommodate my request for an old fashioned-style drink, despite the restaurant only serving alcohol 18% ABV and lower. The resulting cocktail was actually quite good and showed real effort and skill. However, be aware that there's an automatic 20% service charge added to your bill, which feels excessive given the food quality issues. Buddy seems to be trying very hard to create innovative dishes with nice presentation, but when it comes to taste, nothing comes together properly. The execution falls short of the ambition, and with an automatic gratuity on top of mediocre food, it's hard to recommend. read more
