I would like to start out by saying I am of Asian descent and I was at the restaurant with my husband who is White and daughter who is of mixed race. The food was delicious and we were overall impressed with our experience there. As we were leaving, I was the last to exit. There was a White couple who blurted out a racial slur as I passed them. Neither my husband nor daughter heard it because they were in front of me. I told my family what had happened and I realized I forgot my leftover takeout container so my husband went back into the restaurant. This was when he witnessed the same man who used the racial slur harassing an old Mexican couple. None of the staff did anything to acknowledge how inappropriate his action were. My husband went to tell the employees there about the racism and they said that there were no managers to speak with about the complaint. Today I went to look at the reviews on Yelp and saw that there were at least 3 reviews mentioning that the establishment is racist. Perhaps if you're white, you will enjoy this restaurant. If you're not, I would not come here. read more

Bud's has a lot of intrinsic charm, and a lot of that comes from being in a small town. You walk in the door and people know each other and are friendly. The interior (minus the plethora of creepy animal heads mounted on the wall) is warm and inviting and reps the history of the town and the building. But the food and service were just mediocre, and for that I can't reccomend it with a lot of enthusiasm. My family was in the area to visit a pumpkin patch and thought we'd try something new and, most importantly, local. Bud's popped up first in our Yelp search. We came right at peak lunch hours and had to wait about five minutes for a booth to sit in but that wasn't a problem. Unfortunately, when our food came out it did so in waves spaced about five minutes apart so by the time I got my sandwich half our party was almost finished. My au jus steak sandwich, which was specifically recommended as the house special, was a solid choice but smaller in size and served with some lackluster fries that really could have used some seasoning. The au jus itself was very tasty though. But even after getting my sandwich I had to specifically request it since she forgot it and wait another five minutes for that! Bud's is about half way between my house and my friend's house, so we decided to meet there for lunch yesterday. I really enjoyed the place, the food was better than I expect from bar grill and the service was decent. The place looks like a locals hangout but was friendly and based on the outside seating I'd say trying to be more than just a local watering hole. Dixon isn't a big place, I'd say it kind of the practical side of UCD ag school and I like that, I will be back. read more

I just had to write this in hopes that the owner will read it. So we go in last Sunday March 13th and there is a sign on the front door and hanging in front of the bar saying "You can win me" it is a nice gun. Since my husband is a hunter we start asking questions. The older waitress who is chatting up a storm with everyone finally comes over and has no idea what the raffle is about. Does not find out and continues chatting with others. The next young girl comes up and still has no idea what the raffle is about it. Now that is weird! I know it is some sort of charity so I keep asking. Finally Leanne comes up and knows it is for the ODDFELLOWS which is for Orphan children. She says people were asking and she asked enough questions to know how to sell the tickets. What a great cause and she figured it all out and we bought a ticket for $25.00. Thank you Leanne for taking the time to know and support such a good cause! It is not okay to work at a place and to care less about a good cause and why the two signs were placed there? Obviously the owner or manager supports Oddfellow's and was trying to help the charity. So good food nice place but it bothered us how little interests these two waitress had to help a good cause. Come on in and enjoy virtually anything on this menu! Our favorite and most often what we go specifically to chew and swallow is the prime rib. Your choice of cut and the usual potato on the side. The NY steak or steak sandwich are also delicious choices. Even the hamburger was hit on our latest visit. The other big star of the night was the rack of lamb. So delicious! And it should be at a restaurant in the heart of lambtown USA. It did not disappoint in any way. Half of Bud's is the restaurant and the other half is the locally famous bar. You will find a lot of regulars and Dixonites in the bar pretty much any night of the week. Call it a little local color and after enjoying your cocktail head over to the dining area to see what Bud's has to offer. I go for the food and company but there are a few things you want to prepare for. The service is...weird, hard to explain but it's not a well oiled system. You will have several people tending to your table especially with groups of 4 or more. This sounds great but it's often unclear who is taking care of what. Sometimes you have to remind them of what you asked for and sometimes 2 servers will come out with your request. My other larger annoyance is the wine list. It's pretty local but in my opinion, too local, as in, a pricey list for stuff only us super locals know exist. Being 30 minutes from Napa and Sonoma wine country it would be nice to expand the list a tad. Although I know what I like and I always find something I can enjoy with my meal! I had a hard time getting service in the bar the first time I came on my own. I ended up waiting for 15 minutes in an empty bar before being greeted. However every time I've eaten here at a table I've had a wonderful experience. I came here with my mom and step dad tonight. My mom and I both had the filet steak special. It famed wrapped in bacon and with two scallops on top. My step dad has the lumberjack ribeye. He orders it every time. The food was delicious and came out in a timely manner. The entrees come with soup or salad, veggies, and your choice of rice, mashed potatoes, or a baked potato. You get a lot for your money and the food is of great quality. I've been here 3 times in the last year. The food is delicious with good sized portions. Love the atmosphere. BUT lacking prompt service. Our first Sunday afternoon visit was a good experience. 2nd Sunday afternoon visit. We decided to take my mother out for lunch after church. We were promptly seated THEN waited approximately 25 minutes before our waitress came by to take our order. We had to flag an employee busing tables to get us a waiter/waitress to take our order. She was apologetic and we received good service thereafter. 3rd Sunday afternoon visit. My wife and I entered the diner and was met by a hostess asking us how many in our party then walked away and never returned. A second hostess approached us and ask how many in our party then she walked way never to return. We were finally seated. The hostess that sat us was polite and friendly. We reviewed the menu and were ready to order. OH-UH Deja vu. No waiter/waitress again. The service employees walk by our table several times serving others but never noticed we have been sitting here at an empty table. After about 15 minutes of no service, we were considering leaving the diner as we were very annoyed. But we stayed since we came from out of town. Finally our waitress came by to take our drink and lunch order. Our order was served in a timely manner. But never saw our waitress again. We flagged down the bus person to ask for water refills and let her know that the pancake breakfast we ordered was served with no sausages. She apologized and delivered our sausages to-go. After our meal, we were ready to pay our bill, but where is the check? As I got up to go look for our waitress (she never came by during our meal to check on us) she arrived at our table to deliver the check and we payed. My wife and I both work in service delivery jobs and we were very disappointed in 2 of 3 of our visits with the service. I really like this place but the last two experiences here has soured me. I give the food a 5, ambiance 4, service 2. We plan to visit Dawson's across the street on our next visit. read more

After checking out the local restaurants in Dixon, my wife and I have decided that Bud's is one of the best...not just here in town but also in the greater area. The steaks are really good; flavorful meat and good cuts that are very well prepared. The Jambalaya is also extremely good, and my wife has raved about the Cobb Salad ever since her first one. I also recently had a steak that was soaked in a berry sauce, and despite my purist bend on steak, I will say that it was an excellent meal, particularly when paired with the asparagus. The staff at Bud's are very pleasant and will go out of their way to ensure that you have a good experience, and the ambiance is just awesome. The pictures on the walls go back (in some instances) more than 100 years into Dixon's history, and I love taking the time to look closely at them whenever we come in. I highly recommend Bud's if you are looking for a great restaurant. read more

We had never been to Dixon so we took a drive out there. This is a cute little establishment on the main street. The ambience is pub-like, brick walls and nice big wooden booths. I ordered the hot roast beef sandwich and fries and my husband had French toast. Both were tasty. Nothing over-the-top fantastic but still good solid food. This was my families first time to Bud's. I had heard great things over the years...unfortunately I was beyond disappointed. I ordered the Blackberry Rib eye...no flavor, so fatty and about3/4" thick. This was the worst rib eye I think I have ever had. My mom had the prime rib, no flavor and fatty...my husband cleaned his dish and said he didn't want to come back....he was just hungry so it was just something to fill him up....that's not saying much! The service was lousy and there were plenty of waitresses there chatting with each other or hiding out in the back. Finally at the end we just wanted to bill and to get out of there and that took another 10 minutes to get. The waitress said at the end how was it...I told her I was unimpressed and disappointed about the meal/ meat and my mom also told her and she said oh and walked off to get our bill....no apologies, no dollars off of the bill....wow. I will never come back and will always make sure I tell my friends it's a waste of time to go there....it SUCKS! read more

The short: Their young servers we had for lunch are friendly, though, albeit clueless. The kitchen has gone downhill. At the very least, you should receive what is printed on the menu, hot food should be hot and cold food should be cold. They can't manage that. The long: I came here once years ago and remember it being goog. I went twice within a week, and was disappointed both times. Their waitstaff doesn't know what beers they have in tap "because they're still to young to drink." They apparantly don't know what's on the food menu, either. This is a management issue. Clearly, the management doesn't care if their staff is informed, and these poor teenage kids are left flapping in the wind. When you order something, you expect it to have what it says it has on the menu. When I sent my sandwich back for the for sprouts it was supposed to have per the menu, i was told they don't ever carry them, and when i asked to add onion, I was ignored. The sandwich itself was ok, but the bread was over toasted. The kind that chews up your gums like captain crunch when you take a bite. I thought breakfast would be better. It was worse. Literally everything came out cold. Hashbrowns, eggs, chicken fried steak and gravy... all cold. All things that are really gross to eat cold, too. We said everything was cold. We were ignored, but, when pressed, they did agree to get me new hashbrowns since I was absolutely not going to eat any of them. They came back warm but hard. Not crispy, just hard, like they hadn't been cooked in enough oil. I ate about 1/3 of my meal before I just couldn't do it anymore. Maybe I'll try again in a few more years. read more

The service was good even though they were very busy and we got in and out without a hitch. The only thing is you have to share the catsup. We really wanted to like Bud's: it's a really cool old place in the historic part of Dixon. Walked in to a large room with high ceiling, brick and wood. The menu offers steak, seafood, and local lamb. How could I not go for the local lamb? It was billed as having Bud's "secret seasoning" which I think it is not a stretch to say consists of a hell of a lot of salt. Mind boggling, you've never eaten this much in your life, wake up with swollen tongue, quantities of salt. Was that lamb under there? I'll never know, all I could taste was salt. The salad was OK, not all that fresh or inspired. The asparagus was perfectly cooked, and covered with, wait for it, yes, a salty sauce. Service was being conducted at a break neck pace, it wasn't all that busy but either the staff is hitting the lattes way too hard or they're getting cattle prodded into action in the kitchen. Either way, it's not a pleasant experience, unless you're really in a hurry to get out of there (say, in case your tongue is all swollen up from the salt barrage). read more

I found myself in Dixon at dinner time on a Saturday evening. The place where I'd planned to eat had unexpectedly closed their kitchen, so I had to find a new place. That place turned out to be Bud's Pub and Grill. On a Saturday, there was one section of the bar with the TV playing a football game, and àt the end of the bar, there was another TV playing a BBC programme featuring Judi Dench. Cool that Dixon has a bar that serves both tastes in television programming. The food: my dining companion ordered the ribeye steak dinner with green beans and mashed potatoes. I ordered the hamburger with a small dinner salad. While we waited for our entrees, the server brought us some warm bread and butter and water. The bread tasted fresh from the oven and was quite good! They'd given us a generous amount. They have free WiFi, so you can surf a little while waiting for our plates. The salad that came with the burger was a pleasant surprise. It was tasty and well-tossed. The burger was very good, cooked medium as ordered, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. My dining companion said his ribeye was savory and delicious, that his mashed potatoes were good, but the green beans were overcooked and had no crunch in them. The service was good, but the server seemed a little overworked on this busy night. I'd like to return on a somewhat less busy night, sometime. read more

There are not a whole lot of dining options in Dixon. Out of the limited scope available, Bud's stands out. This local legend, tucked on the intersection of 113 and A Street in the heart of the minuscule Downtown Dixon, Bud's is not a place that PETA would appreciate. The owner surely aim for this classic Western vibe, with taxidermied deer heads staring at you from above the bar. You will often find Fox News on the TV as well, just so you're reminded that this is not Berkeley if you already didn't happen to know. Despite the somewhat eerie atmosphere Bud's is a pretty good place. The service is always polite, but sometimes painfully slow. The food menu is standard American fare: steaks, sandwich, chicken, salad...We usually come for Taco Tuesdays and grab a bunch of tacos for cheap. You can chose between several kinds of meat ,and all tacos: including shrimp, are below $2 a piece. Add chips+salsa and some fresh draft beer and the fun evening is guaranteed. As far as the brew selection it's mostly expected macros but they always have Sierra Nevada seasonal and that is good enough for me. For Dixon. If Bud's was in a different town they would probably have to step it up a bit and I might also be a bit more harsh with the rating. In a small town of Dixon with not too many places to go, Bud's works though. Especially on Tuesdays. read more

It's kinda like a Denny's - but better!!! With moose heads as the main decor. AND a bar. I've never been to Dixon before, but we were there for some business and we decided to hop on to Bud's. I've never been but I'm always game for anything! I had two breakfasts that day! It was lunch time, but I couldn't look past the Honey French Toast! They were super yummy! Not too sweet, but just right. Plus, the bacon was cut thick and crispy! Amy V. had the French Dip. She must have enjoyed it since she demolished the whole thing. The fiance had the roast beef sandwhich. I could hear the crunch of the toasted sandwich as he bit down from across the booth. The amount of meat was a good serving. Definitely didn't skimp out! When I looked over it was gone. Matt B. had the Oriental never ending Salad. I saw him eating, but I'm not sure why he made only a small dent. Another friend had the chili...wish we were better friends so I could have had my spoon all up in her bowl, but I wanted to make a good impression so I held back. She finished 3/4th of it! We've been going to Bud's for weekend breakfast for several years. The omlettes are very good. You can order any combination of ingredients. The eggs come with hash browns or red potatos, but order the reds--they're excellent. The restaurant recently remodeled so that the dining room is effectively part of the bar area. That makes the dining room pretty noisy, though there's a second dining area which is quieter. I once had dinner at Bud's and found the steaks and chops were pretty good. P.S. My wife and I had the special Thanksgiving Dinner (2009) at Bud's. Choice of turkey, salmon and ham entree with all the traditional trimmings. I would've given this place no stars if I could!! First time coming, and the manager had no manners. Took forever to get our orders, We we're a party of 8, She couldn't get our order right and got frustrated. We also had mentioned at the beginning we wanted 2 separate checks and when she was taking our order we reminded her about the seperate checks and she got mad and just walked away from the table. We decided to just pay for our drinks and leave, and she came by our table and yelled; I dnt want your money just get out of here! How immature and unprofessional can she be, and she's the manager. Returned to one of our former favorite places, quite disappointing. Overstaffed, yet inattentive. Prime rib ordered rare, was served medium to medium well, and dry. Veggies were somehow cooked over and undercooked, flavorless. Shrimp scampi also overcooked. Masks were beneath the nose, beneath the chin or absent. Seated at normal capacity and spacing. Get there early! Omg - the food is always spectacular- the service has become something I've come to expect to be predictably unpredictable. 1. Know that they share tips; this is because the management wants the team to work as a team. From what I've seen, unfortunately, it may depend on who is working, and... they don't seem to mind (management) 2. You don't always know who your server is or was, or when you might get served if you get served at all; you may have to flag someone, if there IS anyone around- or it could be completely the opposite and service could be great 3. Meals for our family/friends have always been really very good, honestly, one of the consistently yummy places I've ever been to. Best Prime Rib anywhere in this area. Buds is an old fashioned bar with a restaurant.  Charming old style feel.  Classic menu with old school eats.  The bar is separate from the dining area.  Stick your head into the bar - it is fun.  Brought our kids and they loved it. Service is friendly and had a small town feel.  The waitress really knew the menu and had great recommendations.
