Buen Appetit is located in Irvine. I got to try Buen Appetit when they were at Pokemon Worlds a few months back and saw that they had dirty sodas. There aren't many dirty sodas in South FL so I knew I had to try it when I saw it at their truck while visiting. The line was pretty long since they were one of the few food trucks at a specific location for the day but I waited in line and we were helped promptly. I ordered two dirty sodas, the Waco Pepper and the Mountain Blew. It took quite a bit to get them and we even had some orders after us be called before our drinks were ready. When our drinks were finally ready, the Mountain Blew had a different color than the others ones that came out. When I asked the staff about it, they were pretty short and just kept repeating that it was the right drink and didn't address the different color of it. I eat at this truck whenever it comes to our work in Irvine. Today, I tried something different, the BBQ pulled pork sandwich with fries. It was so delicious! It has a lot of meat on it and I shouldn't have eated it all, but I couldn't stop myself. Even the bun was yummy. The fries were good and stayed crisp on my short drive back to the office. I was very disappointed to say the least! I was hungry and spotted this food truck near my office as we have a different one every Friday. And this one was called BUEN Appetit. I watched them on camera so I'm pretty sure I was the second person to be served. I asked him was the chicken sandwich crispy and he stated that it was made to order. $15 and 10 minutes later I received my disappointing mail. When I got back to my desk I realized that the sound was burnt and way overcooked. Which is sad because the bun and the sauce and the fries were actually great. this is very disappointing and I am still hungry. I was a new customer and they had a chance to make a great impression. I was at the 2022 OC Lantern Festival and decided to get some lunch between performances at one of the food trucks. Fatefully, I would pick the truck from this restaurant, which seemed to have the most Asian options of the three. Now looking at other reviews, it seems like the food they provided here was specifically for the theme of the event, which may explain the massive disappointment it was. I ordered the honey glazed chicken with garlic noodles for $12, which arrived in a small plastic container. On top of a bed of top ramen, sitting out for hours, Panda Express chow mein quality noodles were five pieces of breaded chicken nuggets that looked and tasted like they came out of the Costco frozen food section. In fact, they were very reminiscent of Costco's orange chicken packages which would provide a full platter of the food for half the price I paid. The garlic beef with veggies failed to taste of anything except disappointment. Not only did the beef taste of practically nothing, the veggies looked as if they were reject pieces that might have been trimmed away and left out to wither into the pathetic side of veggies they were supposed to be. To touch on the beef again most pieces were mainly cartilage with whatever meat free of it being powdery at its core. Did I mention this was $14? I know people that are allergic to gluten that would have ordered the rice like I did for this one instead of the noodles, but though it was not advertised as gluten free or anything of the sort they would likely have not been just simply surprised as I was to find pieces of noodles mixed in with everything. I could go on about the Thai basil chicken too, but to be brief, it was bland and an equally underwhelming meal for the price. My experience was between "A OK" (3 stars) and "Meh, I've experienced better." (2 stars) I had the beef quesadilla. A OK Service was friendly and helpful. Good portion size. Filling. Food was hot and technically well made, eg temp, doneness. MEH The food was greasy and bland. There was no less than 3 Tblsp of oil in the bottom of the dish. There was zero flavor. The barbacoa beef wasn't seasoned or spicy. It was just there. No salt. No zing. I suspect the grease over powered any seasoning. And because barbacoa is slow cooked, the addition of an acid, eg lime juice would have been welcome. Further the crema was more like mayonnaise than crema or sour cream. One of the best (if not the best) fried chicken sandwiches that I've ever had!!! The chicken was perfectly cooked and had just the right mix of juiciness and crunchiness that you expect in a good fried chicken sandwich. Also, the sauce was amazing. It came drizzled on the sandwich and I also got some on the side so I could dip my french fries in it (such a good choice). Alright, I've been to this food truck about five times now, trying different things each time I go. I'm pretty sure I've tried everything except for tacos so here's a review of everything else. Beef Barbacoa Quesadilla: When I first laid eyes on it, I was a bit surprised because it didn't look like a traditional quesadilla. Normally you think of quesadillas as on the smaller and flatter side but no, this bad boy was T H I C C! I was presented with slabs and slabs of shredded beef in between some kind of soft shell (similar texture to pita bread) instead of tortilla. No matter though, it was good (if you're in the mood for a whole bunch of meat)! I don't remember there being any cheese in the dish though that probably comes from the crema-like sauce that was drizzled the quesadillas. It's a little on the heavy side so be prepared to make two meals out of it. I do have a few complaints though. Another review mentioned that there was a lot of grease/oil. I do remember there being a lot of juices/liquid coming out of my quesadilla as I kept biting into it. It can get messy to eat! I also thought the meat was a bit on the salty side. I'm not normally sensitive to salt but yeah I could tell it was a salty. Not salty that its inedible but enough to be noticeable. Lastly, this is a very straightforward dish. Don't come in expecting wildly complex flavors and you'll be fine. I wouldn't call the beef unremarkable but I think there's room to improve the flavor. Would I get it again? Yes Boneless Chicken Wings: Classic (boneless) wings and fries! I think the wings are homemade? At least, that's what it feels like. I had half mango habanero and garlic parmesan (latter is an experimental flavor). It had a good texture and flavors, especially the garlic parm (my fave)! Parm truffle fries are as you expect. Nothing mind-blowing but still good. I split the meal into two and it was still good several hours later. My only complaint here is that the wings were a bit salty. I can't tell if it's the chicken itself or the coating though but I don't think it's the sauces. Would I get it again? Maybe...if it were a little less salty. Buffalo Chicken Fries: This option currently does not exist anymore (RIP) and probably for good reason. Of everything I've had, this was the most disappointing. Sure, the portions are huge and I had to split it between two meals. However, "buffalo chicken" was lacking flavor. I mentioned in my earlier review that the citrus chicken was very "inoffensive" and that's still the case here. To me, it felt like an added texture rather than a flavor. Now, if there was a pork fries option... Asian Glazed Pork Bowl: My most recent purchase (from today). Since I've tried more or less everything on the menu already (except for tacos), I decided to go back to the first thing I got here: a bowl. This time though, there's now a separate bowl for chicken and pork (each with their own toppings). I got the pork bowl and was not disappointed. I liked the pork last time I had it and it's still good! There's some subtle heat to the pork that you'll notice over time but it's not too bad. The rice pilaf is still the same and makes the dish stand out a little more vs other plain ol regular white/brown rice dishes. Something I miss from the old menu item was the extra sauce on the side! The meal wasn't as heavy this time around to need the sauce but I still think it was a nice touch. Would I get it again? Yes Customer Service: The truck owners are very cool and humble people. I've always had a very good and pleasant experience every time I've stopped by, never a bad one. My overall experience here, across the food and people, has been very positive and it's why I keep coming back! read more
