I've been coming here since they first opened, and it's remained a favorite for a reason...it never misses. There are a few things I consider completely non-negotiable, and the surf and turf roll is one of them. It's just that good! And if you love yellowtail sashimi, theirs is consistently fresh, delicate, and beautifully done. I always add extra jalapeño's, but do you. We went as a group of five and shared a bit of everything (the only way to do it, in my opinion), and there were so many standouts. The pumpkin tempura was unexpectedly addictive, and the scallops we had prepared two different ways, were absolute perfection... the kind that just melt the second they hit your palate. What really makes this place special, though, is the full experience. The service is warm and polished without ever feeling overdone, the cocktails are crafted just right, and the outdoor seating has that relaxed Malibu charm. Located right in the plaza with CVS and Ralph's so it's very convenient off the PCH. It was surprisingly busy when I stopped by around 4:30pm today - the patio was nearly full and there were a few people waiting for takeout orders (myself included). Their Happy Hour deals are served until 5pm and are a great value. You can get a sushi combo or a sashimi combo or a 3 hand roll combo for $18. There are also some deals on bowls, beer, and wine. The deals ARE eligible for takeout which is nice. I opted for the sushi combination, which came with 5 pieces of nigiri (albacore, yellowtail, shrimp, tuna, salmon) and a choice of either a California roll or spicy tuna. I got the spicy tuna. It was a great amount of food and the sushi was wonderful. The size of the nigiri was generous without being cumbersome to eat. The ratio of rice to fish was on the lower end as well. I was a little bummed they didn't include ginger in the box but they did give soy sauce and chopsticks. -1* because it took much longer than quoted for my order and because the packaging was cracked and so when I tried to use the top as a "bowl" for soy sauce it leaked and got all over my countertop. We checked this place out for lunch recently and had a great time. We made a reservation for outside seating on OpenTable, so we didn't have to wait long to be seated. We sat outside on the covered patio to enjoy the weather. We were able to take advantage of some happy hour pricing which we were not expecting for a Saturday. We tried the fried rice, chicken gyoza, and sushi lunch. We also ordered the Malibu Sunset and yellowtail rolls as well. Everything came out quick and had great flavor. My daughter loved the fried rice and my wife was impressed with how much yellowtail was in each piece of that roll. Our server was friendly and attentive. My wife and I came here after walking 5 miles up and down the beach in Malibu. We got here around 5p and were able to get a seat quickly as it got busier as dinner time for many approached. We ordered a rainbow roll, a Sunset roll and a Paradise roll, all of which were delicious. June P. Came in tonight on a Sunday, you could tell they were understaffed server wise. They had a lot of sushi chefs and food runners on it looked like. Our server had a lot of tables and we definitely felt it! He came by our table a couple times when we ordered but never really checked on our food or our experience and they did bring us a hand roll with soy paper and it took them a very very long time to fix it. They did fix it thankfully but by that point I was kinda over it. The food is always great at bui tho! The prices have gone up- so has everywhere else but for that price I do expect better service. The rock shrimp is my favorite! It is always perfectly crisp and sauced- I did notice the portion size got smaller and price went up! The garlic noodles were great as well! Love the salmon sashimi and the yellowtail with jalepenos comes in such a great yuzu sauce. It was very busy for a Sunday which is great for them! HORRIBLE! I placed an order on Monday and they messed it up, and one of the managers said he will give me 20$. I personally dont care about the money, but today when i went to place and order, i wanted to use the gift card they gave me. These rolls are delicious and I'm not even a rolls girl. Both of these rolls have the perfect amount of texture and flavor. Full Moon mixes warm, crunchy, soft, creamy in one. Malibu Sunset mixes creamy, sour, sweet, crunchy. Though I will say the lettuce in the Malibu Sunset was sort of weird, but it did add an nice touch of freshness. Me and my bf devoured these. Miss: Spicy Albacore & Rainbow Crunch. The Spicy Albacore's sauce was way too salty and there was way too much. We were picking off the rice because it was literally soaked in sauce which then made the entire roll fall apart. The Rainbow Crunch was just boring, very flat and no excitement to the texture or flavor. A perfect sushi roll should have a combination of texture and flavor that makes sense to pair with the fish. Let me say one thing about the Chicken Teriyaki entree - do not order this. It is so bland, it literally tastes like jail food. We got this the first time and made sure to just stick with sushi the second time. The service was excellent both times, all the waiters and hosts are very nice and attentive. They will bring you what you ask for right away. Came to fill water routinely and checked in on us. The ambiance is nice, both times there weren't many customers so it was very peaceful and quiet. Indoor and outdoor seating. I love Malibu for it's quietness and peacefulness and this restaurant is the perfect place to get food in the midst of it. Overall, try the sushi here but just know the rolls and very hit or miss. And do not order the Chicken Teriyaki unless everything else on the menu is unavailable. read more
