I live in ocean country close to Seaside so when my friends came down from North jersey we had to go to Bum Roger's. Went for lunch ( it was September off season) So we were seated right away. There were 4 of us. . Me & my friend each had the hot lobster sandwich roll . It was packed with lobster in a large buttery roll. My other friend had the crab cake sandwich with same type of roll and he said it was delicious. Lastly my friend had the lobster tails that were cooked perfectly. Of course we had a big bunch of large drinks. Service was great as it always is. Food great & can't wait to go back. Our sandwich was so big we both only ate half. Barb and her staff are nothing short of awesome. I'm actually here now and it's sad what they endure with people coming in and talking to them so rudely. They have been so professional and courteous to people I would have told to go someplace else. The food and atmosphere and live band are great. I look forward to coming here every summer. Service was poor. Waitress was hard to find. Food took too long to come out and wasn't worth the wait. My entire party of five agreed the meals were ok at best. The Alfredo dish was liked. Don't get drinks, everyone agreed, they were watered down. My blueberry mule was just a cup of ice. Asked the waitress why it tasted like water, she said they ran out of blueberry purée and blueberry vodka. Why would not tell me this and how is this still a blueberry mule then? Overpriced dried out food! We were excited at first glance at the calamari because there were a ton on the plate! But even my kids couldn't eat it because it was so dry and chewy. Flounder was also so dry and stuffed with what my daughter described as "scrapple." String beans were literally ice cold and rice tasted like a bad microwave meal. This place! How do they stay in business?! Three of us decided to have an early dinner before leaving the beach. We should have just kept driving. We waiting in-front of the hostess stand for almost 10 minutes while the hostess was looking down at something and gave us the index finger as a way to tell us the wait. Then it went pretty much down hill from there. The bartender, or at least the bartender working at the time doesn't know how to make drinks. I mean, he probably can pour beer into a glass, but not make a real cocktail. We ordered (3) appetizers and (2) salads. All of which were a waste of money. No one takes 45 minutes to make salads. However this place does. Don't order the clams casino, crab dip ( it is really beer cheese with chunks of artichoke) or the greek salad, or the lobster bisque soup or the coconut shrimp (aweful and rubbery). Also, do not expect your server to care if the food or drinks are good. She never came back. Never asked how things tasted or if we needed anything else. read more

I thought it was important to write an addendum to my recent review in light of the response publicly posted last night by the owner of Bum Rogers. The reply begins professionally enough, thanking me for the review and expressing regret that some of the food options weren't up to par, but then unfortunately devolves into a mean-spirited, petty attack. The point the owner made about addressing our concerns to management about the water coolant dripping onto the table in lieu of a negative review after the fact is well-taken - I imagine it's frustrating as an owner of any business to not have an opportunity in the moment to address a problem and potentially tilt an experience more favorably in their direction. As a consumer, it's honestly a tough call, and I'm sure we've all been in situations like this. We had a larger group of people, including someone who was pregnant. Every time something like this happens, there's a debate about whether you want to escalate the situation, uprooting a party and disrupting the restaurant to an extent, or staying put and trying to negate the issue(s) as much as possible. We chose the latter and didn't regret it - one member of our party had to move their glass of water away from the dripping vent, and we were all careful getting up from the table. That's it. I'd also mention that this problem WAS immediately broached by our waitress (which I cited in my initial review). One of the first comments she made to our table was to alert us to the wet floor because...water was dripping down from the air conditioning vent. The restaurant knew about it and made a conscious decision to seat people at that table. Even if we had taken the owner's suggestion and been moved to another table, it wouldn't have fixed the problem - in fact, it would have become the next customers' problem instead. That's not a solution. Additionally, I find it very telling that the owner did not mention the far more egregious problem that arose during our visit - the bathroom toilet slightly overflowing when flushed. There's literal sewage that's regularly making contact with their bathroom floor, and yet the owner doesn't see fit to provide any insight into how that issue is being resolved and would rather focus on an air conditioning vent. If you're reading this review, more than likely you're trying to decide whether to go to this restaurant to eat in the future. I obviously can't make that decision for you, but I will say this. Mediocre food can be fixed - you can get better ingredients or better kitchen staff, or provide additional training to your current employees to improve the product. A leaky air conditioning vent can be fixed - you can hire an HVAC repairman to seal up the vent, etc. Even an aggressive tidal wave in a bathroom toilet can be fixed with the call to the right plumber. You know what can't be fixed? Toxic ownership that lacks the maturity to handle constructive feedback. Please be guided accordingly. read more

Okay something happened this year with the place... I live right next door and have enjoyed going here every year. The music and entertainment is great so for a fun night , definitely still go. However, in terms of eating, don't go. I'm getting the impression that they are rationing everything. I've gotten coconut shrimp for years and every year the plate gets smaller with less shrimp and the price stays the same or goes up. I got a drink from the bar, skinny margarita. There was orange juice in it? Even if it's a skinny, orange juice should be the last thing to be put in a margarita. The service is good, like the waitresses are nice but I've overheard some nastiness coming from managers towards them and it's gave me an overall bad taste in my mouth. Came here because my wife and I went to the board walk and it was pretty close since it's off season. We ordered a half dozen oysters, the Manhattan clam chowder, the penne Al a vodka with scallops, and the garlic crab along with a piña colada. The oysters were small and were alright. When we ordered the clan chowder we just said "an order of clam chowder" and what came out was the Manhattan and not the New England.. we didn't learn they had two clam chowders on the menu until the man next to us ordered one and we saw it walk right past us.. we asked and the bartender said "That's the Manhattan.. my wife was so hungry she just ate it instead of sending it back.. we would have appreciated being asked "Manhattan or New England" the penne a la vodka was pretty good, the scallops were half the price of the dish but they we good, thick, fat and filling. The garlic crab was good but was missing spice and salt.. kind of lacked but the meat was tender. The piña colada was pretty delicious, smooth and creamy. My complaint would have to be the amount of flies swarming inside this place! Like when you're outside and you see a swarm of mosquitoes, that's what the flies were doing! Just all around the bar, constantly have to wave them away and the doors to the restaurant were closed so they have to have been in there for a while or coming in from the back.. it was unsettling! Second complain, the manager was standing off to the side of the bar talking to a lot of people just openly, like the whole restaurant could hear them talking over the TVs. When I got up to use the bathroom the manager says to me "baño?" And points to the bathroom.. I already knew where I was going. Not sure if she said baño to be cute and playful or if it was because I'm Mexican and she genuinely thought I didn't know English or couldn't read the sign.. My impression of this place was not work $160 for the at the carry the restaurant and the service. Gave three starts because the pasta was alright, I added salt and Parmesan cheese but the scallops were fresh otherwise it's be 2 stars. read more

The weather was close enough to make you feel summer is close. Decided to grab a summer time meal at Bum Roger's in Seaside Park. We asked to sit in the outside back area which wasn't busy at all. I also realized that the inside dining area was totally empty which should have been a clue but I missed it. The drawback of eating outside is somehow dogs are now ok to join their family in the eating area. Strange atmosphere for a restaurant. We stayed anyway and ordered dinner. I ordered stuffed shrimp. Not a good idea at all. The shrimp were prepared and served with their shell still on the shrimp??? The tail was gone along with the poop line but the shell was still fully on the shrimp. So before you can eat it you have to pick it up peel the shell off before you can eat it. Really it wasn't worth the effort and added to my aggravation level. I never remembered having to pick up and clean the shrimp before eating. Another aggravation was Bums meal prices. We are off season down here but the menu looks like July or August $$$$. I sat at the bar. There was a short blonde bartender (Sunday night) Who didn't smile or want to be there. Gave a rude look , also. Served a Corona with no lime, didn't ask and gave me a can and didn't even offer a glass. She clearly didn't want to be there. Time for a long vacation for her. Anyway, got the broiled seafood combo and the extra $15 for the lobster tail was the best deal that I made, overall with tip was $70 so bums is not bargain basement anymore, but a good fresh meal it was and I would go back. A second detractor- when they have the band- don't allow them to play so loud- band was good but people want to talk, and it was way too loud. OH THIS PLACE IS PURE GOLD!! Firstly, I want to shoutout our amazing waiter Jessi (or you can call him Jess). He was such a delight. Very polite, funny, and had such great mannerism. Came here on a Sunday evening, we were seated immediately. The menu itself was so overwhelming (but in a good way!) so many options, it took us awhile to choose. We ordered the blackened fish bites which were DELICIOUS. The dipping sauce it was paired with had a nice kick to it. I ordered the surf and turf (well down). My lobster was JUICY and so FRESH. My date ordered the shrimp scampi which I did get a taste of and it was also super delicious!! We had no room for dessert but we also ordered drinks which were great as well. The atmosphere was very social and you can actually hear yourself talk which was nice. Music wasn't too loud and the overall vibe was pretty casual. This is definitely a new favorite spot of mine when I'm in the ocean county area. I am coming back for sure! read more

Totally disappointed. Went there for the fried clams which I had heard were really good. Ordered them only to find out five minutes later that they didn't have any. Should've walked away then, but instead ordered the broiled scallops which did not appear broiled but boiled and undercooked. The mixed vegetables which accompanied them were so bland they could've been from a grade school cafeteria. The lobster bisque tasted like warm sherry gelatin with 3 tiny shreds of lobster. Service was mediocre. Had to ask for the drink I ordered a second time. My dining partner ordered the fried crab balls which were equally distasteful, hard on the outside and tasting like the oil needed to be changed last week. We have now been here a few times, and cannot say enough good things about the experience. We have sat inside, on the back deck, and on the front outside. Probably the back deck is the most fun, but that might be because a couple of folks had dogs with them (yes it's dog friendly) which was entertaining in itself. The staff are really fun and friendly, and the food has been consistently good. Bad eats, I went there yesterday IT WAS HORRIBLE! I've been here other times throughout the years and this time was the worst . The crab meat didn't taste fresh at all $50 for 1 potato and 1 piece of corn , and the food had no flavor at all. It might have been a result of a warm, early Spring Saturday that resulted in confusion and disorganization with the staff. From the time we walked in and waited 5 minutes for the woman standing at the hostess desk to acknowledge our party of 2 since she was busy organizing behind the desk, and talking to other staff members about random things, to the mediocre food, this visit was a disappointment. The only saving grace for the visit was our server. Hopefully, they will get their act together for the upcoming season. Took the family out for the first time to Bum Roger's. Ordered the Broiled Scallops with rice and vegetables. Scallops were overcooked on the outside edges and raw & chewy in the middle. Had to stop eating. Such a waste of $40 dollars and scallops. Labor Day weekend and I get the impression the food quality was completely compromised to keep up with the crowd. Very disappointed, worst scallops I have ever had, and will most likely not be give Bum Roger's a second chance. Should have been a sign to stop and leave when we were waiting for a table at the bar and I had to advise the bartender how to make a Manhattan. Bathrooms are very unsanitary and disorderly. All I can say is "What a Bummer." Imagine paying $30 for a fried shrimp platter and getting only six small shrimp. Got the lobster bisque soup, ate none of it after the first bite, and still got charged full price. Total bill, $180 for complete garbage. Years ago we loved coming here with the kids. We went the other day , and upon our arrival we asked the hostess if it was half price appetizers. She responded yes (we were there at 4:00) We ordered a bunch of appetizers thinking they were half price , along with crabs and a few other things that we knew weren't. Apparently we didn't read the small print that said half price appetizer only works if you're at the tables near the bar or outside. We politely asked to speak with a manager , and our lovely waitress was very understanding and got her for us. Well the manger , was on her little power trip and brought the menu over to point out the fact that it says we weren't in the right seating area. (Our fault for not seeing that print and assuming the hostess knew we were going to be ordering appetizers after asking her about it, and she didn't mention sitting on the other side) The manger took $25 off our $200 check, but her tone was completely off. Makes me sad to say this but the garlic crabs were kind of a letdown for me :( I was really excited to visit (from out of state, MD) and try some different crabs from our old bay style and the crabs here were kind of small and dry, bland tasting. This is the local watering hole, so I've heard. I would say that that statement is correct. This is not a place to go out and club and meet people. All the locals were here and it looks small on the outside, but the place is huge. There's indoor and outdoor seating. One place looks more like a restaurant when you walk in, then there's a bar, then it goes to outdoor seating, then there's an outdoor bar. They have a decent sized drink menu and a food menu. I got the watermelon cooler. It wasn't the best drink I've ever had, but it wasn't bad. It honestly tasted like a straight up watermelon the first time around and the second time it was soo strong. So it depends on the bar tender. My boyfriend got a Corona. One cocktail and one beer were $16 without tip. It was a fun bar. Very lively, stereotypical bar. This is not a place to come to if you like clean things. The floors and tables were gross, but if you can get over that, then it'll be a good time. The band inside was fun! It's definitely catered towards an older crowd, but I enjoy live music in general, so I didn't mind. I don't know their name, but the saxophonist was phenomenal! read more
