Must come for authentic Vietnamese food! I tried the bun rieu, fried fish cake, and their coffee with condensed milk and ice. My friend tried their house special rice noodle in soup. He really liked the variety of meats in the soup (pork, shrimp, squid ball, and imitation crab). I thought the bun rieu was delicious, it was nice and hearty on that cold day. (Note: if you don't like tomato or crab, bun rieu is not for you but if you do, you may have just found your favorite dish) The portion was a good amount of food and by the end of dinner, I felt so full. I also tried the fried fish cake which were quite flavorful. The coffee with condensed milk and ice was good too and kept me energized through the rest of the night. As the shop isn't too big, there may be a wait if you come during busy times. The shop is pretty efficient though in getting customers through their meals. The ambiance is alright and it's typical of your standard Vietnamese restaurant. Note: they are cash or debit only so be sure to bring cash or debit card

This place has been on my radar for a couple of years and I finally get to try it last week. Street parking is available. I had the bun rieu and the broth was really yummy. Sweet and flavorful. The small was quite tiny but still sufficient for me. If you are very hungry, get the large. I like this bun rieu better than the famous one on Victoria Drive. I will need to try the dill fishcake version in future. I saw a few people ordered large quantity of food, as if it was a catering order, for take out. It got really busy closer to 7 pm for this place. Cash or debit only.

A hidden gem in Burnaby for bun rieu! I think this might be the best restaurant for it that I've tried in the lower mainland (over the other hyped one...). Recommended by my cousin's friend to visit, it definitely did not disappoint. The restaurant was filled with people but not overly busy in that we had to wait, and we went during dinner time. The crab flavour is super strong and rich in flavour, but somehow did not taste heavy at all. I was able to finish the whole bowl by myself and not feel bloated. A generous amount of toppings as well that tasted delicious with each bite of noodle. Noodles were bouncy and not overly chewy nor soft, which I enjoyed. Only accepts cash and debit though. Would be a great place to eat for a quick meal!

This place is ok, I've ordered takeout for my dad mostly but have tried the pho and the lemongrass chicken myself. It gets pretty crowded here for lunch but seems to be pretty dead at nights. The workers here are very nice. They have a tiny parking lot in the back and there is street parking out front.

Really tasty pho place in the Edmonds area. Parking is available on Edmonds, as well as the side streets. The interior has a somewhat modern (2000s) look. The place got pretty packed, and I can see why. Staff were friendly, but they were a bit short staffed. Pricing is pretty reasonable, but bowls are a bit on the small side. I tried their signature dish (bun rieu cua phuong nam), which is crab soup with vermicelli. Decent amount of meat. Served with lots of other goodies such as prawns, tofu, and tomatoes. Nice light broth. I also added the spring roll combo option. These are similar to the dim sum version, but thinner. The ones I had were slightly burnt. Wouldn't mind coming back to try some of their other dishes. Recommended.

I was intrigued when I read that Bun Rieu Phuong Nam was operated by a chef that worked previously at Bun Cha Ca Hoang Yen. It's a family run spot next to Mostafa Coffee House and Na-Re Korean Kitchen. Both visits have been steady with several groups ordering takeout. Service was passable but you will need to flag staff down for tea/water refills. The menu is split into appetizers, pho, hu tieu, rice and drinks. There's the option to make your meal a combo ($3.95 extra for 2 spring rolls/salad rolls, $5.95 for a coffee/drink). Not worth it anymore as you don't save much. Trip #1 - Herbs - don't see shiso leaf often, these were fresh. - Bun rieu cua phuong nam (#18) ($15.95 large) - noodles are a touch on the softer side, which personally I don't prefer. Broth was tasty but it doesn't beat Hoang Yen's. - Bun cha ca (#19) ($14.95 large) - broth was aromatic, clear and dilly. Good amount of fish cakes and one really tasty fish ball. They also had a taro stem (aka. bac ha) that added a crunchy element. Trip #2 - Cha gio ($3.95 combo) - two spring rolls. - Che suong sao (#43) ($5.95 combo) - the menu states grass jelly but the translation is wrong, it's a green jelly dessert. Tasted like weak pandan with crushed ice. - Bun rieu cua phuong nam (#18) ($15.95 large) - the noodles were too soft but the broth was homey. Enjoyed the variety of meats. - Pho dac biet (#8) ($14.95 large) - large portion of noodles but again, too soft. Broth was standard. Cash or credit only. Stick with the bun rieu or bun cha ca at BRPN. 3.5 stars.

one of the chefs from bun cha ca hoang yen set out on their own culinary adventure, opening bun rieu phuong nam. curious by this, we dropped in on a sunday evening around 7:00 pm at 7405 edmonds street in burnaby, on the same block as the edmonds community centre. ample parking is available on the side and on the street, and despite the bustling atmosphere, we were seated promptly. much like bun cha ca hoang yen, this spot exudes a casual vibe, with a strikingly similar menu. the bun cha ca, a noodle soup with fish cakes, boasts a delicately balanced broth featuring hints of dill. served with shiso leaf, bean sprouts, lettuce, lemon wedge, and sliced red chilies, enhances the texture and taste in every spoonful. i added their three bean drink, served with crushed ice, green jelly, and evaporated milk (or was it coconut milk) to my meal. my partner opted for the lemongrass chicken on rice, and added the 'make a combo' with an order of the shrimp salad roll and red bean drink. despite the positives, my feelings about this place are mixed. bun rieu phuong nam is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. it's worth noting they accept cash and interac only.

I keep having that Anthony Bourdain video clip from "Parts Unknown" show up on my Facebook feed where he goes to that Boston restaurant and loads up on deep fried food. He's just chowing down before going "Oh yeah, that there's the stuff." I haven't had that feeling myself much as of late. It kinda coincides with how little Vietnamese cuisine I've had for 2022. Well, I've been dropping by here relatively frequently since it was recommended by a family member so that takes care of the Vietnamese cuisine itch. It's a medium sized restaurant overall. However, it very much seems like it's a get here early, or else have fun waiting in line type of joint. Every time I've been here, a line quickly forms after I've sat down. I definitely very much enjoy their food, and almost more importantly their broths. It's got that rich and hearty feeling you would expect from a good pho bowl. It also feels a bit less heavier than I'm used to while still retaining that great taste. I've also their tried special crab soup. I'm not normally a fan of the dish but I felt the urge to try something different. They are very generous with their portions and that made it great. I loved how much bits of crab I had as well as the nice pork hocks. I can't recommend Bun Rieu Phuong Nam more. I didn't have a ton of Vietnamese food this year, but I felt after a few visits that I more than made up for it. After having their crab soup especially, I couldn't stop from thinking to myself "Oh yeah, that there's the stuff."

Was in the high gate area and decided to try this place. Was surprised by the cleanliness , ( unfortunately most authentic Vietnamese joints aren't). All I have to say is: good value, good portions, authentic flavours. I have had this dessert in years and I just have to say they give you a lot of beans! Which I love, most places cheap out on it and compensate by adding more ice but this is not the case here. Will def be coming back !

We need more Vietnamese restaurants with fish cake and dill soup! It's so fresh and tasty, definitely my favourite. Discovered this restaurant while looking for crab soup and fish cake/dill soup. The only place we had known of was in Vancouver, which is quite far for us. Now we have a place in Burnaby! The service was amazing, soup hit the spot on a cold rainy day. Petition to have crab soup and fish cake/dill soup in all Vietnamese restaurants please and thanks!

This is my favorite Vietnamese place in the neighborhood when ordering for a group due to the number of dishes they do decent. You should, of course, try the bún riêu at a placed called Bun Rieu Phuong Nam. Some other solid dishes are the phở đặc biệt (broth is a little sweeter than I'd like, but not overwhelmingly so, like at so many other places) and the bánh xèo (which, like the phở, isn't spectacular, but doesn't have any major issues that you often see, like tasting too flour-y). They're not super quick for take-out even now, with business being slow due to covid, but it's a new restaurant, so things might get better over time. P.S. As of this review, they don't take credit (cash or debit only)!

Went at 3:15p on a Sunday and there was no line up! Loved the soups! Very rich and satisfying. Generous amount of toppings + meat which is always great. Service was great too, friendly smiles and attentive to our needs. I wouldn't recommend the banh xeo (crepe). It was falling apart due to lack of batter, not enough lettuce was given for wrapping and the lettuce that was given was very small. I've definitely had better ones elsewhere and it's very overpriced ($16). Debit & cash only!

Yum! This place was not far from our Airbnb. We put our name on the waitlist and waited outside. It didn't take too long. We ordered bun rieu, pho, spring rolls, and egg rolls. Everything was so flavorful! The bun rieu was savory. Pho was comforting. Both broths had depth. The egg roll was crispy. It was really hot in there though, but we didn't notice it too much while we were eating.

It does not come with tofu, so I added some (another $4!) to my small size. The pho came out in less than 10 minutes. The pho came with lots of veggies (lots of broccoli, plus cauliflower, carrot, celery, white onion and green onion), plus lots of rice noodles, and tofu. Of course, the broth is usually what makes or breaks a pho, and this was one of the most low-effort, lamest vegetable broths I've tried in Greater Vancouver (and I've tried over 90 pho places in the Metro area that have veggie pho options). In fact, I saw the woman fill up my pho bowl from the hot water dispenser. So, they don't even bother to have a proper veggie broth; they just base the broth on hot water, with maybe some salt and possibly some other spices? The broth tasted like barely salted water. Super lame. Embarrassing product to serve. The value is bad given the very lame quality. I like that they have a veggie pho option. The portion is big and you get lots of vegetables, though the lack of tofu is definitely a thumbs down given the already above average price for the pho. All in all, don't come here for veggie pho. 2 stars is very generous.

Since then though we've heard a few people say positive things about it so...we decided it was time to give it another try. Came here as a group of 5, and it was a last minute decision as we had originally planned to eat elsewhere but that place turned out to be closed on Sundays. With no reservation on a Sunday, we were asked to wait about 10 minutes. Not too bad of a wait, compared with another Vietnamese place that we'd driven by earlier which had a lineup out the door. A couple of people in our group had fried eggs on their dishes. The eggs looked good. Soft yolks and soft yolk is what I like to see. There was a Papaya salad that we shared amongst the table. This was OK for me. Wasn't thrilled with it. I ordered the Lemongrass Tofu on Vermicelli. I love that this restaurant gives the option of having it on Vermicelli. I'd been somewhere else earlier this year which also had Lemongrass Tofu but it was only served on rice, with no option of switching to Vermicelli. The Lemongrass flavor was strong. Very flavorful. Something in the dish though was quite spicy. It seemed a lot of other dishes on the table were also quite spicy. Hubby's Bun Bo Hue was extremely spicy but he still enjoyed the dish very much. My daughter and I both ordered the Sober Sunday drink which had Lychee, Kumquat and Lemon Juice. The drink was OK. Nothing to write home about. Our daughter just ordered the Tapioca Dumplings appetizer and then took bits and pieces from other people's orders. A spring roll and a couple pieces of Lemongrass Tofu from me, some beef and noodle from her dad...etc. The dumplings looked tasty. They looked like something I'd have ordered myself if I were still a meat eater. Overall, the food here is flavorful. It was a much better experience this time than the first time we came here. Personally though, I'd prefer them to tone down the spice or even eliminate the spice altogether. I don't like having to wipe my nose all the time because of having eaten something spicy, or having my lips burn.
