I'm going to try and keep this review shorter than my others, a challenge no doubt! I don't want to admit to loving this place, but alas... I do. My first few experiences with lobster in the UK weren't the best experiences, the price versus what you got was never there compared to what I was accustomed to in the land o' plenty... OK, the land of too much most of the time. I digress.
Quite a simple concept with this place... you can get a burger, a half lobster, or a lobster roll for £20 with chips and a salad... aside from dessert, olives, and mixed nuts this is it and they're all the better for it. I have to say though, I'm astonished in how many people get the burgers... the lobster is a great value, the burger... not so much. I guess burgers are very in fashion now, but they have never looked that great to me here... they don't look bad, they just don't look like they're worth passing up good lobster for. They do various mix and match specials, which may be the way to go if you really have to try both offerings.
I personally had the lobster roll on my first visit, and quite liked it, but have gone with grilled lobster with a side of garlic butter every visit since... to me this is the only way to have lobster, although they have a steamed option as well for those that would prefer it. I also really like the fries, they're the skinny type, perfect for dipping in your left over garlic butter. The salad is a great side as well since it's actually a little salad with a bit of balsamic, croutons, and parmesan shavings included. (I absolutely love the UK, and have lived here for eight years now, but three pieces of rocket on the side of my plate is not a salad... that's garnish my friends.) ;-)
For the curious, if you want to order off of the board and ask for an idea of size they will often disappear for a short while suddenly reappearing with our live friends in tow... this mortifies me! (I get that most people would go for this, and there is definitely an "ahhh" factor with people taking pictures, etc., but I prefer to believe that any type of live food comes from a magical place... perhaps a Star Trek replicator, that's magical enough for me.) Back to the subject on hand... if you're dining with a pal and they also want lobster it's often a better value and a bit more fun to order one off of the board. Example: Two smallish lobsters, adequate in size don't get me wrong, with fries and a salad will set two people back £40... if you see something on the board in the £45 - £50 range of value then go for it... you get more for your money, it's still a good value, and it comes with unlimited fries and salad for both of you. (Multiply this logic if there's more than two of you... I've seen some groups basically split what I would consider a sea monster among them which is infinitely more fun than ordering separately.)
I suppose I should mention their drinks... they do nice cocktails, but they will set you back... this is London, so it's not a surprise, but it's hard to swallow two cocktails literally costing as much as your lobster meal. (OK, it's never hard to actually swallow a cocktail, but you get my drift.) That said, they do 3/4 pints of Asahi which are the perfect level of cold every time, I swear they must be served at the world's best temperature for this type of beer... sometimes I find myself here drawn by that alone, with the lobster being a bonus.
As for the place itself, it's in Farringdon and "feels" as such... this isn't a bad thing, it's got that modern yet quirky feel to it which seems to work so well for the area... it's a decent size, but still expect to wait at least for a bit on any given night.
My last note is for a dessert I had on my last visit, a chocolate ice cream sandwich on chocolate wafers which was flat out awesome. I'm not sure if they make their own desserts, or have them made somewhere else (more likely), but this one was a winner for me. It wasn't at all too sweet, and despite the way it sounds was quite light... this may not be a good thing for someone praying for death by chocolate, but it was enough for me to go from a "did I really just order dessert, shoot me" mentality to an "I'm so glad I ordered dessert" one instead. I've had a few of their other desserts, which were always OK, but if this stays on board then it will be my go to dessert if there happens to be room.
I'm torn on this one... I'm going for 5 stars, because that's what it is to me, but if you're going for the burgers then it may actually be a 3, which I suppose rounds to a 4... which would be fair if you're doing a mix. Still, good lobster at a decent value in London is worth 5 stars for me... they should just change their name to "Lobster & Lobster" and be done with it.
(Who knew I could ramble that much about a place that only has a choice of three mains?!? I truly and sincerely thought that this was going to be my shortest review.) read more
