Very disappointed! Been coming here since i could remember. My wife just brought Home a bag of burgers and boy was i surprised. I was curious about this place. Read the reviews and food adventurer in me made the call to explore further. Can you really beat a bag of 5 burgers for $12? I mean really? It was a basic cheese burger in the bag o' burgers - 1/4 meat patty, American cheese and relish on a soft bun. Got value for family for sure! Fries were greasy & sloppy but tasted like real potato with skin. The food adventurer in me doesn't consider American a real cheese I would be up for trying again and upgrading to the burger with produce - still a value and possibly onion rings. read more

A bag o' burgers..... Sounds good, right? In theory :) The bf and I HAD to try this place, 5 burgers for $5.99?! And it's been here since the 1940s? So we pull up to Burger Bar and do a quick survey of our surroundings. The place itself is housed in a rather run down, white painted building....modest at best. A few picnic tables surround the establishment, though it appeared that most patrons chose to have their burgers elsewhere. My initial thoughts? "YES!" This type of decor usually signifies, no thrill-no frills Good Eats! Their menu had an array of sandwiches, tacos/burritos, shakes/icecream, and a ton of burgers. Since it was our first time, we went with the original and side of fries. 5 minutes later, the young gal behind the counter hands us over two heavily greased stained white bags. Mmm, smells good so far :) Back at the privacy of our own home, we unwrapped our first burgers from their wrappers and took our first bite....meh. Very modestly dressed with relish and mayo. The fries....not bad. But then again, I love potatoes in all forms and have always enjoyed a good soggy french fry. Needless to say, we did not finish our 5 burgers, though our puppy did get to have a little burger patty for dinner that night. :) Yes, the burgers are inexpensive...but I think I'd rather go to Mickey Ds for their $1 double cheeseburgers. Avoid. This place is bull ass. This place reminds me of the burger joint on the ending credits of the Flintstones cartoon where they put the slab of Ribs in Fred's car and it tips over. Besides the dry ass hairball burgers, I've gotten pulled over by SJPD at this place more times than I can count. If I could rate it as 0 stars I would. And Catsup, I mean come on....what the hell is this, 1948? Who the hell serves Catsup? Get some freaking Heinz 57 "KETCHUP" already. The fries smell and taste like construction paper. In terms of environment, one time I was sitting outside at one of those round tables talking to some random lady at another table when some drunk ass bum on a bicycle rode by, fell off his bike and literally landed atop my table. My drink just all over the back of this guys dingy pre-stained shirt. I'd had enough, I could not react. Emotionally, there was just nothing left in me. I got up and sat at the table with the girl and we continued our converstation. After he fell to the ground he looked at me with lost hound dog eyes and said "Aren't you going to help me up?". A staple in my family since I could remember. Definitely a heart-attack in a white bag, but every bite is worth it. I have never order anything else but the steak sandwich, fries, soda, and a milkshake. The BBQ steak sandwich doesn't look tasty, but don't let your eyes deceive you its good! The fries are little thin strings 50% potato and 50% grease. I know its so bad! You have to share them. It comes in a paper wrapper which is see through by the time you pick them out of the bag. The shake is also pretty good. Very thick. Obviously this isn't an very day restaurant. But its a great spot if your craving yummy greasy, oily food. Its not fancy and not updated. I have been to Burger bar on three occasions, and my opinion is this: When it was good- it was very good indeed, but when it was bad it was horrid! Then again, I have friends who swore by this spot. My advice is to go at lunch time when the burgers and fries are fresh. The thing that I love is that they put thick slices of bacon on the cheese burgers which is a definite plus in my book. The bbq steak sandwich is just okay, and forgettable. The two times that I have been to Burger bar in the evening, the fries were super greasy and the burgers tasted like they had been pre-cooked and sitting there. I've driven past this place so many times over the years but never eaten there. One Saturday I was having this random craving for a hot dog. I ended up stopping here. I stepped up to the window and ordered the regular hot dog with the works (relish, mustard, grilled onions and ketchup) and an order of onion rings to-go. The rings came out golden brown and super crispy. I was in fried food heaven. The hot dog was good enough to put a lid on my craving for the night. So I grabbed my girlfriend and her buddy to grab a bite. we bought like 10 burgers because it was so damn cheap because they have something called " 5 in a big " for like $5.99. The burgers are VERY Delicious. It's basically a hamburger with some good ass S|-|it on it. Its like In N' Out burgers secret rival when it comes to special sauce. God knows what is in the burgers (they might even be vegan given how odd they are), but they are definitely one of my greatest comfort foods. My family grew up a block from this place and my grandfather would bring home the bag of burgers to feed the kids.. I tried taking my partner there and he got sick, so I'm thinking you have to grow up with this food in order to build a strong system to truly enjoy it. Also, the half fried chicken is off the chain. You have the option of asking it for 15 or 20 minutes, I'd suggest the 20 minutes (yes, this means the chicken is sitting in the lard for 20 minutes). BURGER BAR IS AMAZING. This place is a total dive. When you come here, what you are ordering is a bag of oily, greasy fries which cannot stand under their own power, and a bag of five hamburgers. Then, YOU TAKE THESE INGREDIENTS HOME. At home, you spruce up your hamburgers with lettuce, tomato and whatever else you can think of you'd like on your hamburger, all from your own refrigerator. I think you have to be a native San Jose'n to appreciate this place, because its not that the burgers are ridiculously amazing, they're just cheap and different. If you're a health nut... RUN. The fries were soggy, just how we like, shakes nice and thick, burgers were measly little things but got the job done because after we were done eating all we could say was " Im so full, Im so full." This joint is the "dive" of burger joints here in San Jose and unless you're familiar with taking Monterey Road in and out of Downtown San Jose then you've probably never seen or heard of it. Call me sentimental but I've been eating here since I was a child so I have an attachment to this joint despite its location and outward appearance. I'll admit this isn't a place you'd probably take a date, well, at least not on the first date but there's something about their cheeseburgers and steak sandwich thats like no other... It's probably the greasy meat and sweet relish that dominates the burger or the BBQ sauce they use on their "steak" sandwich.. Oh another thing you must have is a sense of humor cause the "steak" isn't going to be what you'd normally call or recognize as a steak. As for the fries, well... uh... hmmmm... how do I say this? if you're particularly conscious of your grease intake you may want to pass on the mass of deliciousness that comes in a bag that becomes translucent by the time you get it home. Remarkably their chili is also something of an anomaly when it comes to what you'd typically expect of chili... but I like it. As the name hints at, Burger Bar serves a certain kind of trashy, greasy food, and you're either in the mood for it or not. Their burgers consist of a patty and bun with mayonnaise and relish, and the fries are a gooey blob of grease and starch. If you can take something that heavy and unhealthy, it's tasty in a trashy, guilty pleasure kind of way, and very cheap. You can get 5 burgers for the price most places charge for a value meal, and the regular fries cost like $1.50 and can easily be enough for 2-3 people. If you order any food other than burgers and fries, it usually takes them 5+ minutes to prepare it for you, instead of less than a minute to put the stuff on hand into a bag. I like the tacos and BBQ steak sandwich, but they're both every bit as cheap quality as the burgers and fries. The one thing that's better than most places is the soft-serve ice cream, but that's mainly because they give you about twice as much ice cream as most other places. I don't order it much because when I do it's always enough to spoil my appetite, ensuring that I don't finish the burgers. There's minimal seating -- a handful of outdoor tables -- it's more of a place you'd stop by to pick up stuff to take home or wherever, but the staff is efficient and polite in my experience. read more

Ok, so yet another place I never would have eaten at if it weren't for my husband. A place he's gone since he was young with his family. Super shady, dirty parking lot, only dirty outside tables and a plethora of people begging out front and digging thru their trash cans. Other than that, the fries are greasy wonderment! I love them and the orders are huge. We usually order one and share between us and our 3 year old son. The milkshakes and chiliburgers are pretty good, too. This place is not for everyone, I repeat, This Place is not for everyone. This is another Family favorite of mine. I guess we ate a lot of junk food when we were growing up. My grandpa used to take my Mom and my aunt and uncles here when they were kids in the 1950s. That is probably why I like it so much. The Hamburgers are incredible, a bit like eating a candy bar.This is because they only have two toppings on them, sweet pickle relish and a little bit of Mayo. If you want something more akin to a traditional hamburger, then get a deluxe burger. They have gone up in price over the past few years, but I still go. The fries are a whole different story. they are basically thin cut, skin on (sliced there kind of like In-n-out) and soaked in grease. They give you a ton of salt packets if you want to up the anty on having a coronary while you're there. There are little crispy fries that are delicious mixed in with the ball of grease sticks they give you. Some people go there just for the fries, while I usually end up splitting mine with the winged rats that beg at the tables. The meals I enjoy there: My regular: 2 burgers, regular fries and a Large coke. My old regular: 1 burger, Steak sandwich (Has Bulls eye but make sure to hold the mayo) and a large Coke. I like Coke... a cola. Other good things I have had there: The onion rings are delicious and I think, beer battered. They have been serving "Jack in the Box" style tacos since before Jack in the box existed and some people swear by them. In fact it was because of Burger bar that I found Yelp, when I did a search for it on the net. If you are Brave and have eclectic taste, than try this place out at least once. Oh, some info, although the three places are now separately owned, Burger Bar, Burger Pit (on Blossom Hill rd. and Kooser) and Burger Barn (behind valley Fair mall on Winchester) used to be owned by the same guy until he passed away and they were split. Oh, be ready for some homeless that may be asking for money. They are not always there, but I have seen and helped a few there in the past. Burger bar is a beautiful thing, if you drank your dinner earlier. Open until 11 PM on Saturday (Yelp is wrong). Grilled cheese is awesome, as are nacho fries, but probably only if you have been drinking. I do not care for the bbq burger, personally but it's a biq square burger on a ciabatta with cheese melted into it and coated with a tangy sauce. Nothing wrong with it but I felt confused, should have been actual ribs under that sauce, not ground beef. If you are sober and more towards downtown Go to La Victoria less greasy yet also very tasty. I don't know if affiliated, but you can buy La Vic's infamous orange sauce here says a sign. I've LOVED this place since my parents stumbled upon it when I was a kid. Simply put, their bacon cheeseburger is AMAZING. Deliciously juicy patty, crispy bacon, relish? Phenomenal.. and certainly the best thing on the menu I've tried. The chili cheese fries are simply perfection as well. You should also probably try their chicken sandwich, steak sandwhich, and their normal burgers, because I told you to. You really can't go wrong with any of them, all great. For the price it is decent, not the cleanest tables outside but hey I'm there for a pick up and pig out in the car session. If you're in an unfortunate situation where you do not have a stable roof over your head, homeless, then this place would be great if you can get $6 a day because the 5 burgers for $5.99 has a lot more bun than meat which is good for financially struggling people. My curiosity got the better of me today as I always drive by the Burger Bar on my commute. I finally stopped by and when I first arrived I noticed that while the sign says 99 Cent Burgers, the menu didn't seem to list them, and for the most part seemed pretty standard to any other burger place, for being so popular I really expected a lot more. Not a big deal, but it threw me off at first and so I asked the lady about this and she showed me one of their 99 Cent Burgers. I ordered two and headed on my way, as the 99 Cent Burgers are apparently already premade. The burger is a little on the smaller side, but that is to be expected for meat for a buck. It has mayo on one side and a blend of relish and ketchup on the other. I tried the first one as is, and not liking their relish-ketchup mix I scraped it off the second one and gobbled it down. The place is a bit of a landmark as everyone knows it's location and has thought about going there if they haven't, but like most of the Monterey highway strip it's in a run-down sketchy neighborhood where during the day is the best time to go, but at night you may want to go with a group. I probably won't be back, not that there is anything wrong with it, but I could go to a McDonalds or Wendy's and get the same thing, all of which are in more convenient locations to me. read more

In reality this place is more like a 3.8 star but for what it is and how long they been serving up the same style burgers shakes and fries it's a mom pop shop that I Hope never goes away. Their style fries and burgers are second to none for what is out there. Sure it's not 5 burgers for $2 like it was back in the early 90s but there is still great value in the bag of burgers and family fries. Their burgers are filled with mayo relish and bbq sauce which is hand made locally. You can always ask for them fresh if you are skeptical. Don't be. Their steak burgers are freaking awesome. One of my person faves. Shakes I'll take the strawberry please. Have one! Last but certainly not least. Their fries are cut daily by hand and fried to perfection.
