What's behind the curtain? Something that used to be the best, I think. Burger Joint's burgers were awesome at some point. I haven't been back in a long time, but what I used to remember was that these burgers used to be the underground best. Standing in line to order, the presentation definitely looked like these burgers were going to be great. The fresh toppings like lettuce & tomato are very much present but the burger just seems to be lacking any flavor. I got mine with mostly everything on it except for pickles but I was kinda missing more basic salt and pepper seasoning in the burger. The added bacon and cheese didn't add as much character as I hoped. The queue was really slow moving and the order pickup spot was in the middle of the line to order which is really awkward and completely inefficient. I also ordered a brownie but for some reason that particular item is self serve but I wasn't informed until after I left. That certainly did not add well to my overall experience. The layout was definitely different from my prior visits, there is more seating now, but a couple of the table tops were a bit messy with leftovers from the prior customer. Either Burger Joint's burgers used to be so much better (and cheaper, LOL) or other burger joints in this city have caught up and created a better burger standard. New space in same hotel and really new prices!!?! It's really a 3.5 or 4 star place but this rating is 100% based on price. $17 for the cheeseburger (that is not better than Shake Shack) and $10.25 for fries is straight up Central Park sucker pricing. Also worth noting that the website says $13.50 for cheeseburger and $8.50 for fries - those prices would be a fairly high for what Burger Joint is - a perfectly good casual spot. I doubt a single local resident eats here more than once. read more

Man, this was a bummer to revisit. I came to Burger Joint during its first iteration 20 years ago when it was tucked away inside the Le Parker Meridien hotel. Back then, it really was a little hole in the wall (behind the curtain) and the prices were shockingly low. And while it wasn't an amazing burger, it was good enough that you felt like you were in on one of New York's secrets. Today, the burger is somehow worse, the restaurant is five times its old size and the secret it out. Worst of all, the prices have soared and, as a result, a very forgettable burger will set you back $25. That's before you add a drink, a side of fries (not good) or a milkshake (meh). I have fond memories of this restaurant. Moreover, I enjoyed the burger that I had here. On a Friday night, the line was extremely long. The customers were mostly tourists. My friend didn't want to wait on the line. Thus, she recommended I order on Grubhub for pickup. I would had waited for 30 to 45 minutes, if I didn't do that. Cool spot but not as good as reviews would lead you to believe. Once I got in there was a fairly long line. I think it took about 15 minutes before I ordered. The lady said this is the best burger in the city. The burger I got was alright. Definitely can't be the best burger in the city. It was very under seasoned. They cooked it well with good ingredients but it was just so bland. Fries were good. Kind of like an upscale McDonald's fries. All of mine were crispy which I appreciated. Felt overpriced. I spent 12.40 on the burger, 7.81 on the fries, and 4.59 on a soda. The vibe is really nice. The walls are covered in graffiti and signs from different countries. Haven't been in here in a while and was shocked to see they moved sides into a larger space. Great for them...not sure if the food is the same quality as before...could also be the time of the visit which was late night. The new space definitely gives more room for seating however similar to before, you gotta grab a table as soon as someone gets up, otherwise, nothing but standing room. One improvement is they now accept credit cards...so if you don't have cash you're not SOL. I'll have to return to see if it was just the late-night cooking or if they have indeed changed up the quality of the product. read more

I have never understood the competitive fuss about burgers: "THIS burger is the best!" "No, THIS is the best cheeseburger that ever existed!" People, it's a slab of mashed dead cow sandwiched between mass-produced, Wonder Bread-style buns that aren't even baked in-house at even the most upscale, dedicated, high-quality burger establishments. Toss some half-rotting vegetables sliced and left at room temperature eight hours ago, add a dash of synthetic truffle oil, and you can charge $25 with today's inflation prices. Whoop-de-doo. Burger Joint, a so-called speakeasy burger spot, is the perfect example of this. Our cheeseburgers were fine. Were they worth $10? Probably not, but again, inflation. They tasted as good as all cow patties with cow solidified milk taste. The fries were exactly the same as McDonald's (I'm convinced they come from the same distributor)--so, you know, skinny and salty. The best thing we had was the strawberry milkshake, which seemed to be made with real strawberries. There's nothing wrong with Burger Joint, and it'll definitely do if you're looking for an affordable meal in this overpriced neck of the woods. But, I dunno....I don't get the hype. I found out about this spot as it was featured by the legend himself Anthony Bourdain, but that was a whiiiile back and they have since remodeled (I was informed). I went with the single cheeseburger + the works, which is standard condiments and vegetables (onion, tomato, lettuce, etc pretty ordinary topping). The patty itself was thick and I filling, no need for a double IMO. Overall the burger was enjoyable, but there nothing special stuck out about it. There wasn't anything unique about the burger - toppings, meat, bun. Meat lacked seasoning. It tasted like a burger I'd cook myself at home, if it was a low effort quick meal. My friend texted me about a burger speakeasy we should go to, which was on my radar after seeing it on Instagram.  The Burger Joint is located in the swanky Thompson Central Park.  We asked security at the front door who pointed us where to go. There is a neon sign in the hotel that points you to the right.  You walk by a hotel lounge area then walk up and through the red curtains.  I will give them points for the décor.   Love the graffiti lined walls where you can add your own:) We went after work and reached there at 8 PM on a Tuesday.  All the seats were taken and there was one seat available which I told my friend to sit while I ordered.  The wait to get to the front of the line at this time was 30 minutes.  However, when I got to the front of the line there was only two other people on line and the place started emptying.  My friend was able to move us to a booth.   My friend ordered her burger medium rare with the works(lettuce, tomato, raw onion, sliced pickles, mayo, mustard, ketchup),sauteed mushroom and oniion and a side of bing chili crisp. I ordered a cheeseburger medium well with the works and another cheeseburger medium well with sauteed mushroom and onions.   There is a separate charge for the sautéed mushroom and onions. I also ordered spicy slaw to place on top of the burger with the works.  The burgers are cooked to the correct degree of doneness for both I and my friend. Her burger was missing the mushrooms that she ordered.  However, we both agreed that though there were a lot of toppings, the burger was a bland. Reading the Yelp reviews, I read people complaining about the blandness, so I brought my own ranch and bbq sauce to spice it up.The bbq I placed on the cheeseburger with sauteed mushroom and onions.   The ranch I placed on the a cheeseburger with the works and spicy slaw.  The sauce helped the burger reach a flavorable state.  The spicy slaw was not very spicy. It is not tongue burning spice, you feel a little tickle at the back of your throat.  Now, to make it actually spicy, we added the side of bing chili crisps we paid for to the slaw and the slaw tasted good and actually spicy. To drink I ordered the strawberry boozy shake which was 11$ for the shake and 9$ to make it boozy. The shake itself tasted great.  It did have strawberry pieces. The make it boozy for 9$ they hand you a mini bottle of titos to mix in your shake.  My friend had white wine which was ok. Was it worth it. It is the best burger? Let's just say I've had better burger pattys and when making my own burgers I season them well.  The ambiance and music and company was what made my trip here enjoyable.  It is great place to visit at least once read more

They have really pretty lights and it's so different from the rest of the hotel. They also have some draft beers to go with the food. Great speakeasy burgers place. Service was fast and polite, when explaining the questions I had about the menu. You need to access the Thompson Hotel in order to reach the restaurant. We walked in and didn't check in because we knew exactly where we were going, and they screamed at us as we walked " How can I help you???" As if we were not allowed in the lobby, then we mentioned the restaurant and someone walked us there. I know the restaurant recently relocated to a bigger space within the lobby, so maybe that's why they asked? Not entirely sure this might have been instructed, but it was politely weird. Anyways we got in through the red velvet curtains and the experience went really nice from that point. We ordered the cheeseburger with bacon and our choice of veggies and sauces, the beef was cooked at the term requested in both burgers, they were yummy, juicy and good in size. We also had the sweet potato fries, very generous portion enough for two people, in my opinion they could have had more seasoning but we add some salt and pepper and that was enough. Music selection was nice, ambiance and decor very authentic. As most burger restaurants in the city they lack a signature sauce, which to me is key when outstanding from others, however, I did like the food, the service and prices are fair, so I would be coming back and would recommend. It's been a while since I've been here. A new bigger location in a renovated hotel, but the burgers were not as amazing as I had remembered. The wait in line, just to place an order, was ridiculously long in terms of time not amount of people waiting. I got a cheeseburger with the works, but it lacked flavor, and I don't want to have to add a lot of toppings to make a burger taste better. Was inspired to go here by Anthony Bourdain. The burger was fantastic. I recommend it with "the works". I did a double patty, but if you aren't starving a single is the way to go. The fries are a solid shoe string with just a little salt. IMHO the burger was fantastic. Thick pattie's, cooked to order. I didn't bother with pictures of that since there are dozens already. Importantly the aesthetic was my type of jam. Aside from the crowd, it has all the makings of a perfect dive bar. They do take card now, but cash only for tips to the staff. We waited in a long line that moved relatively quickly and found a booth while we were waiting. The food was good - cheeseburgers and fries and sweet potato fries - I love that you can get really nice lettuce, tomatoes, onions pickles on a substantial patty (this isn't a skinny smash burger patty). With that said, it's overpriced for what it is. Oh well we had fun but aren't going to seek this place out again. I'd rather get table service for this price. read more

Super cool speakeasy-esque burger spot in midtown. I've been here a couple times now and things have changed a little pre and post COVID. It's a little hidden and that's the fun of it but once you enter the hotel, just follow the big red curtain on the left. Prior to COVID, there used to be a line along the curtain to get into this small space but my most recent visit, there was really no line but the seating has been reduced a bit. The burgers and fries are still just as good. The burgers are juicy and fresh with a myriad of toppings for customizing. The interior is decorated with old movie posters, stickers, and a ton of signatures and marks left by patrons over the years. Definitely a cool spot to check out! read more

I will open by saying the vibe of this burger joint was very cool. Hidden inside a hotel (which also made it hard to find, because of the lack of signage... which I guess was intended), it was one of the few places that were still open after a show I went to with a few friends on a Monday night (10pm... what happened to the city that never sleeps?!). Seating is very limited - it's more of a grab and go, or stop for a quick bite with a couple friends (max) as opposed to a gathering spot. As for the food... I really can't understand how some people can claim is their favorite.... or even good? The bun was over toasted and the meat was dry. I got mine with the 'works' (lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and sauce) but still found it too dry. The fries.... $6 for a small serving and honestly nothing special. In the setting of NYC, the burger joint almost feels like a speakeasy but for burgers. Super cool vibe that starkly contrasts the hotel that it's set in. The Burger Joint is a cute little speakeasy-type restaurant in the lobby of an east-side hotel. I came in with my family for a late-night burger, and boy was I craving red meat. I ordered a burger protein style with lettuce, onion, tomato, and pickles with french fries. However, the restaurant had no idea what "protein style" meant and didn't ask for clarification, so they just gave me a bun that is not gluten-free. I had to send it back so that they could wrap it in lettuce which they didn't do. Instead, they just peeled lettuce off the head and threw it onto the plate. The food was ok. The burger was dry and you could tell that it was just sort of thrown together. It wasn't really anything to write home about, but it satisfied my cravings. The French Fries were good, though. I also noticed that they added cheese to my aunt's order even though she didn't want cheese and they didn't have any water option without preservatives which is weird because they're in a kitchen which should have water and ice. read more

A hole in the wall type joint. At first I was like "is this the place??" Lol had to ask the concierge at the hotel where the restaurant was and he was nice enough to point it out for me. "LOOK AT THE RED VELVET DRAPES AND MAKE A LEFT" Food came out quick and they ask you how you would like your burger cooked. Ambiance is unique, tons of pictures and stickers on the wall.
