That was one of my favorite oasis in the city to get a delicious meal, at a great prices, in a location that is absolutely unique. Well, I guess that didn't change much since they simply moved across the hall (former space of Norma's), except for maybe the cost of that same enjoyment. What I appreciated about Burger Joint was always how beefy their burgers tasted. They use to make their patties out of a proprietary blend of sirloin, brisket, and fatback. Not sure if the formula still stayed the same, but I still can taste the meat. Don't ever change guys. Clearly, price is no longer their strong suit. I still remember the days when a burger with all the trimmings was $7-8. Now that same burger is $17. Btw, their milkshakes are now $12-14. Wow! They do taste great though. Sadly, time keeps moving, and prices will keep climbing. That's just part of life. In order to move to the nicer and bigger digs, they had to raise the prices. A good, consistent burger with standard salty fries. Came here on the rec of my dad who when to NYU (years ago) and said he really liked this place. It's a good burger, it is $16, so on the pricier side, but it's also more substantial than a smash burger. Location is kinda hard to find but the hotel workers were very helpful! Wow, I had not been here in over ten years, but I had been in the Industry City location in Brooklyn. It was good there, as I remember, and this was at least as good, but the price tag, $26 bucks with tax for a burger with a sde of fries for lunch, was hard to swallow, and I paid cash. They had since moved and were now in the former Norma's Restaurant space up the stairs from the lobby of the hotel. I had to ask the hotel front desk to direct me. The burger was great as were the thin crispy french fries. The "decor" had not changed, bit these digs are now quite a bit roomier than before. Overall a fun experience. read more

Burger Joint is basically a burger speakeasy at the Thompson Hotel, and after visiting the one in Singapore years ago (no longer open), I finally made it to the mother store in NYC. The concept and ambiance were very similar although this location is much larger and has very high ceilings. It's dark and there are no windows, so focus is on the burgers and fortunately, they are very solid. The burgers start around $14 but they are good sized, perfectly cooked and very flavorful. Staff here is great too, and it was the perfect place for a second supper after a broadway show. read more

I axxidently found Burger Joint about 18 years ago when I was trying to get in from the cold with my 2 children in tow. It was.i. a different hotel at that time. I went to see the tree with my hubby on January 3rd and remembered the Burger Joint. I remembered the burgers were delicious 18 years ago and was surprised the decor is the same and the burgers just as delicious. It's a bit pricey but we'll worth it. The burgers are tasty and juicy. I totally forgot to review this place, but I remember when it was a real secret spot. Now, everyone knows how to find it inside of the Thompson hotel. There were lots of tables to sit at, though I could see it getting super crowded during busy times of the day. A few of my former colleagues and I came here for lunch a year or so ago, and even though it was busy, we all got our burgers and fries in a timely manner. They have vegetarian options as well and I got the beyond cheeseburger which was very good. Soon as I walked into the new location, felt like old times seeing the amazing staff Tee, Jeff, and Mikey! The food is great, despite the prices are insanely higher than the old location. The new location is bigger, can accommodate more people. Just does not have the same nostalgia as the old location. The place has a fun vibe but it almost makes the place look dirty. It's not. It's attached to the Thompson hotel so it's nice to get some food to bring up to the room. The fries were good. Had to convince the kid making the fries that it was ok to give us all different sauces and that we would pay for them . He was very set on only giving us one type of sauce. read more

Although no longer as hidden as it once was, the burgers and shake at burger joint were excellent. My complaint though is that it was extremely expensive for what it was. 13 dollars for a milkshake is very hard to justify. The food was great but had it not been in our hotel, I would not pay again for this meal because of the pricing. read more

Talk about a hidden gem! Unless you know, you'd never know even if you were sitting in the lobby. Let me start by saying that I love burgers. I used to eat them 1000 different ways, at least one or two a day. Until 1993, when I stopped eating red meat. About 5 or 10 years ago, I began to allow myself no more than about a pound of red meat a year Now, maybe two or three. So when I eat red meat, it has to be better than good. I was told this is the place for me. I found it behind the red curtains. Shocked at its real existence, and the quirky, bohemian style of the build out, I focused rapidly on the grill. I saw these thick, juicy burgers, and knew that chances were high as to my making the right choice. I ordered a burger, naked, medium rare. In less than 5 minutes, with just a dab of ketchup and mustard, I bit into this little piece of heaven. Perfectly cooked, great texture and flavor, and to top it off, the staff had the best attitudes. Not one, but all of them. I had to spend about 10 minutes chatting with the cooks. The menu was broader than just beef burgers. They have chicken, vegetarian, fries, wine and beer, and more. Menu is in the pics. Don't tell too many about it, but don't miss it. The decor is a throwback to the old CBGB or The Pyramid Club. Graffiti walls and booths along the wall. Here are the stars. The shakes are really great you can't go wrong. The fries both regular and sweet potato are also worth a mention. Here is what is very good..but not the star. The burgers are really good... I would have loved to say great !! But they are worth their price. Nothing here is cheap but comparable to most places in this area. We had the luxury of staying at The Thompson Central Park in NYC last month and of course had to stop behind the red curtain for a taste of the Burger Joint. Overall? It's a good burger. They have several varieties of burger to choose from and a HUGE bag of french fries exactly as I like them - shoestring and deep fried crispy. But I definitely have had a better burger. It was tasty, and they have Stella Artois on tap (which is always my go to when enjoying a burger)... but it wasn't anything I'd go out of my way to eat again. Thumbs down on the burger bun, which fell apart quickly. The ambience is fun, with lots of graffiti on the walls of past guests, and the service was fast - although you may have trouble locating a place to sit if you arrive at the wrong time of day. read more

Place was fine. At this point you're paying for the ambiance of the 'secret'. Competent cheeseburger with the right 'works', good amount of shoestring fries in an order for splitting, just no where near the cheap late night haunt it used to be (and not even in the same spot as the more storied days). Okay, I went to the hidden "Burger Joint" in the fancy Thompson Hotel in midtown nyc. Forget parking unless you go after 7. But just forget it. This restaurant is located inside the Thompson Hotel behind some floor to ceiling red velvet curtains. You wouldn't know to look behind these curtains unless someone had told you. That was a fun element. The music inside the restaurant was loud and seemed to have a flavor of the Caribbean islands?? The restaurant was so cold, I had to wear a jacket to feel comfortable. We ordered cheeseburgers and sweet potato fries. The burger was just okay, lacked flavor and juiciness. The sweet potato fries looked dark and very brown. Honestly, this place is just okay. The best part about it is the location and vibe as it is hidden in the lobby of a hotel. Once you find it, the vibes are great with writing and stickers all over the walls. There are a good amount of tables and you order at the counter and then wait for your name to be called. I was strongly recommended this place from a friend when we were on the search for something casual near Central Park. I personally thought the burger was decent but not amazing. To be honest, nothing in particular really jumped out to me with it, but it also wasn't bad by any means. I did however love both the French fries and the sweet potato fries which were both great. I hadn't been to Burger Joint since before the pandemic. I was working in the city today so I decided to see if it was as good as I remembered. The location within the hotel had changed since my previous visit. It used to be behind the front desk but now you make a right after the front desk, go up a few stairs and duck behind a curtain. They were able to move the walls from the old location which had signatures and other writing on them. I ordered a medium-well cheeseburger with the works (lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, ketchup, mustard), regular fries, and an Oreo shake. Everything was ready in minutes. The burger was very good. The regular fries are shoestring cut. There were a few stragglers of sweet potato fries, which are crinkle cut. Everything was very filling. If you go, be prepared to pay more than you may expect. My total bill came to over $40 ($15 for the cheeseburger, $10 for fries, $15 for the shake). read more

Solid burger spot that hits the spot when you need a juice patty and some fries. The line can be wicked and seating can be tough, but overall this is a solid place to check out and bite into! The burgers are great, I enjoyed mine with everything on it add on some grilled onions and spicy sauce. The fries taste like they are McDonald's which is not a bad thing at all. Located in a hideaway location inside the beautiful Parker NY hotel, this place has one of the better burgers you'll find in NYC. Came here around 10pm on a Friday night and didn't have to wait for a table as patrons were leaving while my friend and I were still in line to order our burgers. I ordered the regular hamburger with spicy coleslaw and fries while my friend got the double cheeseburger. Our order took around 10min max because as soon as we sat down, they called my name and not long after, my friend's order was ready as well. I had asked for my burger as close to rare as possible and got exactly what I ordered. Savoured each of the delicious, juicy, bite of my burger complemented with my side of fries dipped in ketchup and bite of spicy coleslaw from time to time and boy, was I in heaven. While it's not the best** burger in NYC, it's definitely better than your average fast food burger joint. Fries were nothing special but I did like that there wasn't too much mayo in the spicy coleslaw. If you're in the area, definitely give this burger joint a try for the experience more so than the taste. Make sure you get a double because one meat patty isn't going to fill you up! ;) read more

Personally, I would rate this burger joint a 3.5. AMBIENCE 5/5 Honestly for the ambience/vibe of this spot, it's a 5/5. It's super cool that it's like a speakeasy-type spot hidden behind the infamous red curtains inside of Thompson Hotel. It's a bit of a search inside the dimly lit hotel, but once you found it, you feel like you found the secretive spot. The burger spot itself is filled with walls of posters & graffiti. It's also kind of dimly lit inside as well, but there are string lights and lamps that light up the place a bit. The vibe feels very young/hip. Great for late night eats. BURGER/DRINK 3/5 I got the Spicy Slaw Cheeseburger with the Works (onion, tomato, lettuce). The slaw itself was okay - not the best cole slaw I've had. It wasn't even very spicy (appears that they just slabbed on some sriracha mayo of some sort). The burger was also very average, nothing super special about it. The lemonade I got was also average. I was kinda disappointed in the taste, but it was drinkable. Overall, I would recommend checking this place out to try it once. But I don't see myself recommending this place for a burger spot to frequently visit. The food itself was okay. It's really a 3.5 or 4 star place but this rating is 100% based on price. $17 for the cheeseburger (that is not better than Shake Shack) and $10.25 for fries is straight up Central Park sucker pricing. Also worth noting that the website says $13.50 for cheeseburger and $8.50 for fries - those prices would be a fairly high for what Burger Joint is - a perfectly good casual spot. I doubt a single local resident eats here more than once. read more

Man, this was a bummer to revisit. I came to Burger Joint during its first iteration 20 years ago when it was tucked away inside the Le Parker Meridien hotel. Back then, it really was a little hole in the wall (behind the curtain) and the prices were shockingly low. And while it wasn't an amazing burger, it was good enough that you felt like you were in on one of New York's secrets. Today, the burger is somehow worse, the restaurant is five times its old size and the secret it out. Worst of all, the prices have soared and, as a result, a very forgettable burger will set you back $25. That's before you add a drink, a side of fries (not good) or a milkshake (meh). Went there today and granted they were very busy, but we waited 40 minutes to get two burgers and two shakes. That seems excessive given their menu choices are a hamburger, a cheeseburger and fries.
