Nothing special to see here, folks! The food here tastes like the The Burger Spot looks from afar -boring. It can be decently satisfying at times and entirely horrible at others. Inconsistency is its middle name. The new young female cashier was VERY tuned out. She took forever to get our order down and after checking my husband's military ID, totally forgot to give us the military discount. Her mind was definitely floating in space somewhere lol. My husband ordered the pastrami burger (which he usually loves), but today it was greasy and burned. I also would never recommend the beef taco. Exited Highway 58 to stop for gas and find a good place to eat. My boyfriend and I were craving burgers and decided to give this place a shot. Customer service was very friendly and quick. I ordered the avocado bacon burger and it was well cooked and the fries were also well seasoned. The place was clean including bathrooms, and they had the music at a perfect volume. Throw back diner with plenty of hamburger options to please anyone. They have a great selection of burger toppings and fried sides including fried sweet potatoes and fried zucchini. The burger was prepared like a backyard grill with fresh, homey ingredients. I gave it a 3 stat instead of 4 because the cashier was not very friendly nor cheerful and because i wanted my burger with avocado and bacon to be layered in the same order as the picture menu showed. This place has been in my hometown for much longer than I have, and I think it excels in a few things. First- if you eat here, get a milkshake. It is made from hand-scooped ice cream and they are unbelievably good. Second- burgers. Not the best burgers I have ever had, but good nonetheless. Fries are well done too even though I am not the biggest fan of steak fries. With all this being said, the menu offers more than just burgers. They have tacos, fish, sandwiches etc. I had their tacos...atrocious. The chicken "taco" was literally chicken strips sliced and put in a corn tortilla. The carne asada taco was some of the worst quality beef I have ever had, and did not stay true to what a good street taco should be (carne asada, pico de Gallo, lime, cabbage). Been eating up here for many many years, every time I come up and do some train watching, I hit Burger Spot for at least one meal. Stopped in for lunch on a nice rainy day thinking I would have a great nostalgic meal, to my surprise they were out of my favorite items. Not just one or two but several. So I tried something new (Carne Asada tacos). They were flavorless! The meat is not seasoned at all which is uncommon for Carne Asada. I like getting the garden burger for the flavor but it has changed to all mushy bean patty. Which was not satisfying. They no longer have the ice cream options they used to so that's sad. Burger spot! Definitely a different place! The name falls short for what it really is, I went here for their famous ostrich burgers.... Yep Ostrich!!! Let me tell you they are amazing! And the coolest part is the are from a local ostrich farm that provides the meat for them. It's cool but the down fall in that is that they ru out of meat...we went around 10am on a Monday and they only had 2 patties left... Fortunately that's all we needed. But customers came in after U.S. Wanting ostrich burgers too, and they left because again they were out of meat. I will say though since our bodies are not used to eating ostrich meat (at least not mine lol) your stomach does not take the meat well after ward. Also this place is very small again whole in the wall. And don't go here just expecting burgers, they have everything. Literally tacos, salads, chicken strips Everything! The ostrich comes from Indian Point Ostrich Farm in Cummings Valley! Being a fan of local food and alternative foods, this one was for me. My ostrich burger was yummy. Done medium, it was the perfect texture, having that lean, beefy taste that you expect. I would have preferred different burger dressings, since they prepared the burger with the usual lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese and thousand island-type dressing. After ordering, our food took quite a long time, like oddly long for how busy it was (it wasn't). When we got our food, the disappointment struck. Firstly, our cheese sticks were forgotten, and when they arrived, probably 10 minutes later, they were cold in some spots, and the cheese slid right out of the breading. In regard to the burgers, they were mediocre, if that. We ordered bacon on ours, and received MAYBE the equivalent of one piece. There was not much flavor, but was abundant in oil, which was a turn off. The fries were inconsistent. There would be a good fry, that would be followed by a fry that was big yuk. The drinks were also surprisingly disappointing. I didn't really think you could mess drinks up, but somehow this place did it. Not just soda, but the lemonade as well. As local "greasy burger joints" go, this place is awesome. I stop every time I go through town. My favorite is ortega burger. They use florvorful ortega chilies and not the hot chiles a lot of other places use. They have crushed ice and pepsi products which is my favorite. The fries are nothing special just burger joint fries. Fried zucchini is good and not soggy. The chili fries are THE BEST!! Chicken taco is just a fried chicken strip as the meat was disappointing. Carne asada tacos are great. Very tasty carne asada. The carne asada burrito was disappointing, for the price i would have likes to see more meat in it. Teriyaki burger was pretty good. I was very disappointed with the milkshakes. I was expecting smooth creamy and rich. The ice cream has quite a bit of water content vs milk/cream so the milkshakes are almost slushy. We stopped in to try the ostrich burger...which we then questioned if we should risk eating after seeing the state of the establishment. No one has really cleaned/scrubbed this restaurant in 50 years. The grime is so thick it would take a professional cleaning team to go in and degrease the place. The ostrich burger was just under $11...in an establishment like this! The girl behind the counter had no personality and did not respond to my dad when he had questions. I have a really hard time going to places where the staff is not personable. When you work with the public, you should have an understanding that you will need to interact with customers. Anyway, I will admit that we thought the burger was good, but we also felt $11 was steep. We should have just made it into a combo for an extra $2...that wouldn't have made the price as offensive.
