My husband and I stopped into this burger restaurant because I saw that they had gluten-free buns since I have celiac. I ordered a double cheeseburger, but no fries because of cross contamination. My husband tried their chili hotdog with onions. My burger was very good and I had a nice smoky grilled flavor. The toppings were fresh and the bun was one of the best gluten-free buns that I've had in a long time with poppyseeds on the top. My husband said that his chilly hot dog was OK. He tried to bite of my hamburger and thought it was good. So we can only comment on those two items, but we would go back for the burgers. I was excited to try this place since it had such good reviews. I don't know if I caught them on an off night, but I can't imagine why this place would get a 4.3 review. The staff was nice, but the burger I got was barely warm, the single patty was tough , chewy and tasteless. The onion rings were extremely greasy and not very warm as well. The order was very skimpy and was almost $15 with tax. I don't understand why the food was barely luke warm as I was the only customer in there at 7:15 in the evening. This is a darn solid burger! I was very pleased with the smell when I walked in the door because I knew I was in for a treat. The burgers did not disappoint! They were very tasty and satisfying. Ordered take out here, our first time trying it. I've always been curious about the place, having driven passed it on Wornall so many times. We are glad we got it! We each ordered a double, with fries and also shared a bowl of the state chili. Let's start at the chili--very meaty, flavorful, with melted cheese and onions on top. I prefer diced onions, not shredded but it was still tasty. We will have to get it again. The burgers were very nicely seasoned and the produce was so fresh and held up to our wait time (we brought it home but couldn't dig in right away). The service was quick, friendly, and efficient. The woman at the counter greeted me the second I came in. Though I put in an order online, I could tell our food was prepared fresh and they waited til we arrived to fill our order with fresh fries. This is was one solid burger place! The burger patty itself was a smash-burger style with crisp on one side and soft on underside with excellent flavor. The bun was just right and didn't overshadow the great taste of the burger. I got the Single State no cheese and my husband got the Double State with no cheese and loved it, he's quite the critic. I found myself nearby at lunchtime once again, so I stopped in. Only 1 other customer when I arrived at 11:45am on a Thursday, with one phone customer and 8 walk-ins while I waited for my "KC Fried Burger" (~$10; I asked what was best. The answer was "all of it"). After a less than 10 minute wait (Motown music playing overhead), the burger was ready. Tasty and crunchy, even if the burger was a bit over-cooked. This was our first time at Burger State. I hate to rate a business like this. We ordered and picked up the worst meal we've had in ages for dinner. Wednesday is their tenderloin special. Do not order a tenderloin from a place called Burger State. It was so dry and tough, we couldn't eat them. They threw the tater tots we ordered all over the tenderloin sandwiches in the box. That made the tots soggy. They put the lettuce tomato onion on the sandwich which created a wilted mess by the time it came home. I called them and told them about it. They offered to replace. We declined. They were pleasant and apologetic. I don't know if we'll be back for a burger. I know restaurants are struggling, but you can't serve food like this. Been wanting to try a burger at Burger State and finally stopped by the place on 89th & Wornal. It's clean with plenty of seating. You order at the counter and they all your name when ready. Picked the lunch special Double combo with fries and a drink for $13.95. It was 2:30pm, no crowd and got my food in under 7 minutes. All was freshly cooked and steaming hot. Burger was very good. It's a walk up to the window and order kinda place where they call out your name when your food is ready. My friends ordered green chilly burger and Cajun burger. We all agreed the flavor on the burgers were pretty good, however each burger was over cooked and slightly dry. Visited here recently for a small takeout order after a few recommendations to try this place! I was definitely blown away by their food! I ordered one of their specials that was a big juicy burger with pineapple on it, a side of sweet potato fries, and I was in food heaven! I enjoyed dinner at Burger State. The space was neat and clean with nice staff. The windows outside were painted with cute burger pictures. The prices were decent and there were many good options. The menu was well organized. All of the burger joint essentials were there plus some interesting sounding specials such as the The Mango Habanero Jam Burger. I do wish they had a shake or malt on their menu too. You can also get an alcoholic beverage such as a beer, canned cocktails, or wine. The food was very fresh tasting. I tried the spicy chicken sandwich. The chicken patty was massive and extended beyond the bun. The spicy sauce had a good amount of heat without being too hot. I would say it was just over a medium spice level. The patty that I got was good but there was a spot in the middle that was just breading without chicken in it. The sandwich was served with mayo on the side. Though I liked the spicy chicken sandwich, I probably would not order this again because of the access breading and taste of the chicken patty itself. I also tried the patty melt. This was delicious. I would recommend this over the chicken sandwich. It was a good meat to bread to cheese ratio. I tried some of their homemade burger/ dippin sauce on the melt and it was a great pair. The sauce was comparable to the campfire sauce to Red Robin but definitely superior. I ordered a side of sweet potato side as well. They were superb. They were cooked perfectly with a nice crisp on the outside and a soft center. Met a friend here for dinner because it was close to her house. Neither of us had eaten here before. Not being a burger fan, I ordered the tenderloin (on special for $8.75 with no sides) and onion rings. The rings were excellent, but the tenderloin was anything but tender. It was dark brown and tasted like tenderized shoe leather. This place had several tables, so we were able to eat inside, but the food wasn't up to par. My friend said her burger wasn't bad, but I wouldn't go back unless I was starving and it was the only place open. Not worth the $14.32 I paid for the meal. Bacon Jam Burger on a Gluten free bun is phenomenal, even though I think it would work better on the brioche bun they have it on reg, have to point out that the GF bun at State is an impressive roll, and the burger is amazing. The chili is also excellent, great flavor, I'll prob ask for extra onion next time because it's almost all beef. I was expecting beans but this is not that type of chili and that's how it should stay forever! Last but not least, the sweet potato fries are crispy, freshly prepared, great flavor.
