It was our first time here, and the gentleman helping us was patient while we took a look at all the options they have a great variety to choose from, which made it a little hard to decide in the best way. I really liked their concept of building your own sushi boxes, where you can mix and match different items and the prices are clearly listed on the side, which makes it super easy to customize based on your budget and appetite. I ended up getting a bunch of different options, and while some of the sushi tasted really fresh, a couple pieces felt a bit on the stale side. They also have a small seating area in the front that's nice for a quick stop, though it can get pretty packed. 3.5 stars I've been here for lunch on a weekend and close to closing on a weekday before, evenings tend to take longer to move the line since only the same person is packing your order and ringing up the order. The price is per piece and varies between nigiri, inari/tofu pockets, and special rolls. They don't charge by the box so just ask for a box that is appropriate for your appetite. The torched salmon nigiri is definitely one of my favorites, as well as the hamachi nigiri and some of the inari pockets. I imagine the special rolls get changed up and I wish there is a more transparent way to see which pieces are being refilled soon without holding up the line. I was the least impressed with the scallop tofu pockets, I did really enjoy the savory mushroom one though. I do recommend double checking the count of your pieces to make sure you are charged correctly. read more

I like the concept of choose your own sushi but this place is kind of pricey and the tastiness of the fish is hit or miss. For 6 pieces, you are paying almost 20 dollars. Additionally, their full lunch meals like the salmon one are just okay. I still come here every once in a while but I think there are better places in the city that have a similar concept. read more

I've been wanting to try a make your own sushi bento box spot for a while now. There were so many sushi roll and nigiri roll options, I definitely had trouble not over- ordering. It's not super clear how much every sushi is until you check out . I want to say each sushi/nigiri ranged from $2-3 a piece. They also have some bowls and matcha lattes. Unsweetened my matcha latte was too milky. We enjoyed all the sushi we got- we had a variety of salmon , tuna, white fish, unagi, imitation crab based rolls/nigiri, and even wished we had ordered more. Even though it's kinda pre-made on display , the quality and freshness is on par with a decent sushi restaurant. They were also actively bringing out fresh sushi trays while I was in the shop for like all of 5-10 minutes. They have seating but it's outdoors and they need to invest in some umbrellas! read more

A beautiful assortment of sushi and nigiri place. This is a order at the counter situation with very limited seating. When I went there was one countertop table by the window and they had a handful of outdoor/folding tables that weren't set up. They only had one box size when I went so I guess they charged by piece? I'm not really sure, but my box was only half full so hopefully they didn't charge me for a full box. Service was friendly and they were really fast. The assortment is already beautiful to look at and the sushi/nigiri is not bad either. I basically got every single piece in the first window, but skipped the tamago. The hotate/scallop was not my favorite, but everything else was pretty good. Definitely worth trying and stopping by if you're in the area! This place has a really cool concept that makes getting sushi a bit more fun and flexible. Instead of having to order a full roll, you can create your own sushi box by choosing from a variety of nigiris and rolls. 4.5 stars for me. It's a unique concept for the area and I found their non-sushi menu offering to have good variety. Convenient option when you want sushi fast! There's two approaches I'd recommend 1st option - Think of the sushi as your appetizer or side. They have meal offerings, so make that your focus and the pick a few pieces of sushi to delight yourself. 2nd option - You're on a diet or this is just a snack haha. Get a few favorite sushi pieces within your budget and call it a day. If you go in with the mindset of getting a good deal with the sushi pieces or that each piece will knock your socks off, then you will likely be disappointed. We can early on a Saturday, so service was good for us. It can slow down when a line starts to build. The ambiance is homey, though tables and chairs are limited. They had water and cold tea available as self serve. The pork katsu was good. But it also makes you wonder if this is another poke-style concept where many similar spots pop up quickly and then fade out over time. The price can add up depending on how much you add to your box, ours came out to a little under $40 before tip. The sushi boxes are very photogenic and nicely presented. That said, would I return? Probably not. Unfortunately, the fish itself was pretty tasteless, and the sauces didn't add much flavor either. Even the spicy mayo lacked any real kick or seasoning. I was in the Burlingame area, so I stopped by here for lunch. The concept sounded cool - a la carte nigiri and sushi rolls. The line wasn't too bad when I got there. They have all their nigiri and sushi rolls laid out behind the glass display and you go down the line choosing what you want for your box. I liked that they had a wide variety and it's nice being able to try out a bunch of different nigiri and rolls. I picked up 1 maguro (tuna) nigiri, 1 sake (salmon) nigiri, 1 salmon/tuna inari, 1 Green California roll, and 1 Kaizen roll. It came out to be less than $15 total for 5 pieces, which felt enough for a lunch for just myself. My favorite was the Green California roll, it's a slightly elevated California roll with shrimp tempura inside and seaweed salad on top. The rest were also very tasty as well. They also rotate some of the items whenever they run out as well too, so might be good to go early if you have a specific item that you're looking for. Overall, pretty happy that I tried this place. Buri Buri is located just off Burlingame Ave, so parking can be a bit tricky during peak hours. We came on a Saturday around 6pm and it was pretty busy, but luckily we didn't have to wait long. What I like about this place is that they have a large selection of sushi rolls and you pay by the piece, so you can mix and match instead of committing to a full roll. It's a fun concept if you want to try a variety. That said, it does get pricey. We paid about $40 for 16 pieces, which is roughly the equivalent of two full rolls at most sushi spots. The quality of the fish is definitely above average though, and the sushi tasted fresh and well made. My favorite was the Surf n Turf roll. Super flavorful and one I would definitely order again. I originally came here hoping to try their Coco Mango roll since it's highly recommended on Yelp, but unfortunately when I got there the tray was empty. I asked an employee if they were bringing out more and he said they were done making it for the day. That felt a little odd since it was still peak dinner time and it seems to be one of their most popular rolls. They were actually out of quite a few options by then, so if you want the best selection I'd recommend coming earlier in the day. My husband also ordered the chicken katsu sando (around $17), which he said was solid. I also took my chances on their mango matcha latte even though Cere Tea is just down the street, and unfortunately it was probably the worst matcha I've had. There was basically no mango flavor and the matcha itself tasted very bitter and flat. Just a heads up that this is more of a grab-and-go spot. They do have some outdoor seating, but it's not really a full sit-down restaurant. Overall, I'd probably come back if I'm in the area and craving sushi. The quality is good and the mix-and-match concept is fun, just be prepared for the price and try to come earlier if you want the full selection. read more

Even their miso carbonara udon had tobiko on it, I found it to be a let-down. The sashimi/fish portion of the sushi wasn't too bad, but the rice was not seasoned, so it fell apart when trying to eat it. The tamago had a little too much dashi in it, which kind of overpowered the flavor and had that lingering aftertaste. Their Okinawa Milkynade was creamy but it was missing something. Disappointing. This super cute shop is located in downtown Burlingame, so parking can be tricky. It's more like a grab and go place, as it only has 2 seats indoors and 2 tables outside. Buri Buri offers nigiris, rolls, and inaris that you can pick individually to make your own box of sushi. Loved the concept, but that's just it. Rice to fish ratio is wayyy off, and majority of the pieces didn't have any kind of taste to it. Even the spicy pieces lacked any kind of taste. Drinks: Strawberry matcha latte was extremely watery and didn't taste like anything either. Okinawa milkynade was watery too. Although the pieces were tasty, it could've been a little bit more fresh for the price that I paid. The fish was fresh, but the rice was a bit hard. Not sure if it was because I came in towards the end of the day (around 4pm). It is nice to try a bunch of different pieces but I can't justify paying a higher price just to have a variety of pieces. The concept of ordering sushi by the piece is honestly genius because you get to try so many things without committing to a whole roll. It's a build-your-own sushi box, so you just keep picking pieces until you feel like stopping (for us is 11). Prices are reasonable too, nigiri $3.25/pc, specialty rolls $2.35/pc, pressed sushi $3.25/pc, and inari $2.75. They have around 20 sushi types, and sando, and udon. I really wanted to try everything but I know my limit, so there's still a lot to try next time . This time I ordered: nigiri (sake salmon, hamachi, mackerel, tuna, squid, torched salmon), inari (salmon tuna poke, spicy mayo salmon tuna, mentai scallop), specialty rolls (dragon, kaisen roll, double salmon, scarlet wave) Fish was super fresh and their house-made sauces really make each bite pop! I have no regrets at all ordering this much!!!! My fav was the torched salmon nigiri and mentai scallop inari. They were god-made!!!! Walked in and there wasn't a line on a Friday at 5:30pm. Plenty of selections and it was a fun experience to pick and fill our box with yummy foods. We mostly got the tuna items, which were ok. We had the seared salmon which was my favorite. The inari was good but I wish I chose the spicy salmon over the poke. Poke one was still yummy. Last the egg sandwich was ok. The bread was way too sweet and didn't blend with the egg salad well. I would personally skip that. But everything else was solid and I'd come back for the sushi. read more

It's a great idea because I often feel too committed to having to eat a full roll that sometimes I'll just opt for a different option and this helps with that. It's a sushi buffet and you pay as you go. Get 1 piece or get a whole box. Whatever you need to satisfy your craving. And if you go and not in the mood for sushi, they also offer a chicken teriyaki bento & a tonkatsu bento. Plenty of food, plenty of rice, and sides. The potato salad & salad were delicious. I'm a fan of their dressing. The chips were yummy. It had a good crunch and flavor to it. Everything about the bento was delicious and reasonably priced for the amount of food given. The curry was good. My husband was too excited that he finished it before I could try it with my katsu. Definitely a great spot if you're in the mood for sushi/japanese and don't want to get multiple rolls that's you can't finish. I really like the concept but there's definitely room for improvement. It's great if you're 1-2 people since this gives you a variety of rolls to try but at 3+ people, I think you're better off going to or getting take out from a sushi restaurant and splitting a few rolls since it would be fresher. It's a step up from grocery store sushi but not as good as a restaurant. I came in the early evening and it felt like some of the sushi had been sitting out for a bit and there wasn't a lot of selection as a lot of things were either out or down to three or fewer pieces. So several options of salmon, tuna, imitation crab, and shrimp but not much else. It also took a while to get to order even though there was only one group of three in front of me.
