Poke bowl
Anh P.

Finally tried Tuna Kahuna in downtown Burlingame and honestly their bowl was BEAUTIFUL, like super super aesthetic presentation, and thankfully it tasted just as good as it looked. I got the Ginger Scallion Bowl, mainly tuna, salmon, cucumber and ginger over rice. The bowl is very light and fresh, probably because there's no mayo or any creamy sauces are used, only ponzu sauce. The only creamy thing in my bowl was probably the cured egg yolk, and it's tasty thankfully. Fish quality was good, I mean just take a look at my photos and see how fresh the fish is. Absolutely approved! Overall, highly recommend! If you're trying to cut calories or stay healthy, just order this bowl.

Spicy Chili Garlic- so good, the cured egg is a must!

This place has been on my list for several years and I'm so glad we finally got to go! Got the spicy chili garlic pole bowl. The fish is super fresh and the cured egg was delicious. It added that extra depth of umami that took the dish to the next level. The service was amazing, we sat at the bar and saw a lot of regulars come in. It's clear why there are so many regulars. The food is great and Quan and his kids are the best. They are so kind and made our experience dining at Tuna Kahuna so much better. I would 100% come back and bring friends. It's a great spot to go to and made for a memorable Friday night.

Super fresh fish that is high quality. They have more unique toppings compared to other poke shops such as the cured egg. Really enjoyed the ginger scallion bowl. I've tried their customizable bowls before but I feel like their pre made bowls have a good balance of ingredients already so have been pretty happy opting for those.

Wow! What's a great poke place! Came here for first time and had a pleasant experience. Ordered the yuzu salmon and hamachi bowl and I really enjoyed this dish. The salmon and hamachi were fresh and light! Not fishey or gamey at all. The rice was also made fresh and paired so well with everything else! The service was great! As someone with food allergies, I was really impressed with the service. The staff were incredibly friendly and took my allergies seriously, double-checking everything to ensure my meal was safe. That extra care gave me a real sense of trust. Highly recommend for the fresh food and the peace of mind! I love the location and I'm glad to find a great spot here!

Sake tasting event in collaboration with Sakeman
Raymond N.

Tuna Kahuna had a special sake tasting event in collaboration with Sakeman. Since I was already in the area and early for my dinner plans, I decided to stop by for a quick bit. The inside of the restaurant has a few tables for dining in and quite a few seats at the bar area with TVs directly above the bar, making this a great destination to grab some drinks and food after work. During the sake tasting I tried five different types of sake. Sakeman did a thorough job of describing each sake upon pouring and suggesting what types of food would pair great with each one. Since I am not a regular sake drinker, it was nice to be able to really taste the differences in each. For the fifth and final pour, this bottle was kept in the fridge and was recommended to try both cold and at room temperature (after warming up a bit) and it was surprising to notice the differences in taste. I really enjoyed the sake tasting event at Tuna Kahuna. It was also nice meeting the owner of the restaurant and getting to chat with him a bit. With the exceptional service and overall vibe of Tuna Kahuna, I regret not ordering a poke bowl during this visit since it would've tasted much better than the food I had at my preplanned dinner a block away!

I will definitely come back here again, this is a great poke store in downtown Burlingame that deserves its success. I ordered a bowl with kahuna white rice, salmon, edamame, corn, seaweed salad, shredded nori, sesame seeds, and furikake. Each of these came with a heaping portion and was so delicious! The quality of the fish here is excellent, you could do without sauces and let the flavor profile of the salmon shine on its own. After mixing my bowl up, it tasted so delicious and so fresh! Each bite had its own unique texture.

Tuna Kahuna is a fresh poke spot that totally delivered on a quick, flavorful lunch. I went with the staff's recommendation of the Yuzu Salmon and Hamachi Bowl, and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was super fresh, all the ingredients complemented each other beautifully, and both the togarashi nori and yuzu truffle sauce added such a rich, umami punch. I also learned they host special dinners from time to time, so I'm definitely looking forward to returning for more of their lunch options and those events soon. Highly recommend!

Stopped into tuna kahuna for a quick lunch. There's is seating inside and a couple tables outside. They also have a bar with I believe wine and beer. The bowl was yummy. I ended up getting the house tuna then the spicy tuna and both were really good! My bowl was made super quick and the workers were friendly.

Everything salmon :soooo good.

The food was so fresh and the suggested wine pairing was excellent. The atmosphere was great and would love to be back! Great vibe. chef and server get extra recognition for helping with us. exceptional experience

Tuna Kahuna is hole in the wall poke shop in Burlingame. You can easily miss the restaurant if you walk by. There are only a few tables to sit but you can always enjoy your food via takeout or at the bar table. The poke here is very solid. We ordered the Spicy Chili Garlic Bowl and the Salmon Lover Bowl. The Spicy Chili Garlic came with hamachi and tuna and was not super spicy, just a kick. The Salmon Lover bowl came with of course salmon and edamame and more veggies. The fish tasted fresh and the dressings complimented the bowls. Decent serving of fish with each bowl. Definitely worth trying if you are in the area and want to try poke.

Yum!! Stopped by here because I was craving sushi for lunch and I was in the area. There are fish is extremely fresh and I really love how big the portions are. I got the spicy chili crunch and it had good flavor. It is definitely on the pricier side as I paid almost $25 for a signature bowl, but it can easily feed two meals so it felt worth it lol Would definitely come back if I'm in the area!

So yummy and fresh.. there's not much street parking, but today I found a close spot with the meter already filled. Score!!

Yuzu Salmon

We have still been ordering from Tuna Kahuna since they've opened (5 years!) and it's still my favorite 'poke' place. Came here recently, and figured I should update my review (last one 2022). If I could eat this every week, I totally would. Though it would def hurt my wallet. It's not cheap, but it makes sense bc they use fresh ingredients. I don't know if it's "poke;" I still think of it as an elevated sashimi bowl (fresh salmon) with the accoutrements of a poke bowl (radish, imitation crab, etc). For 5 years, I've been ordering the Yuzu Salmon. I don't even know what other options they have because they make this one so well. People working there are super friendly. You can order at your table with QR code or go to register. Parking can be annoying so sometimes we do order take out or delivery. The food travels well. Inside is kind of small, easy for 2 ppl to get table, might be hard for larger parties. They have outdoor seats too.

Ask the Community - Tuna Kahuna

Do they have table dine in service? I only see pictures of to go bowls...

Yes, they have tables and even a bar that you can eat at! It's just the packaging and ordering process will be the same as the to-go orders.

Do they check for vaccination status? If yes do they still have an outdoor table?

They didn't check ours

How much is the chef box?

Approximately $85/box but price may vary depending on type of sushi and sashimi are included. Get 1 box and try if it's enough to share for 2x people. It's definitely worth it so enjoy it!

Is chef box offer at lunch time for Saturday?

You have to reserve it in advance. When you do, they whip out a huge folder(!) and let you know which remaining time slots are available.

Is dine-in an option or only take-out?

They do have outdoor seatings and Only 1 table for dine in.

Are they still offering their kahuna chef's box?

Yes.. Pre order only.

Is there a kids bowl? If so, do you know how much they would be?

$12. Worth every penny!

What is the nutritional information of your bowls? Particularly carb count?

This meal is rice free so there's an insignificant amount of carbs.

If you plan on visiting during the weekend, expect a wait. The line can get pretty long, but after eating here multiple times, I can confidently say it is worth every minute. Some restaurants are all hype, but Curry Hyuga earns every bit of the praise it receives. The katsu is consistently excellent. Whether you order the chicken or the pork, the breading is always perfectly crisp while the meat stays incredibly juicy and tender. That level of consistency is something I really appreciate because every visit has been just as good as the last. The curry is what keeps me coming back. It is rich, comforting, and packed with layers of flavor. Every bite has a depth and complexity that makes it stand out from your typical Japanese curry. It is the kind of meal that leaves you thinking about it long after you have finished. One thing I also really enjoy is the atmosphere. The restaurant strikes a great balance between being lively and comfortable. There is enough energy in the room that it feels welcoming and full of life, but it is still quiet enough to have an easy conversation without having to raise your voice. I often find myself stopping in for a solo meal when I am in the area, and it is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful lunch or dinner by myself. At the same time, it works just as well when I bring friends and family. It is one of those rare restaurants that feels right no matter who you are dining with. The staff has also been nothing but friendly and welcoming every time I have visited. Even when the restaurant is packed, they stay attentive and keep things moving with a smile. If you have been debating whether to wait in line, take this as your sign. Curry Hyuga earned its place among the Top 100 Restaurants in the country for a reason, and it continues to prove why with every visit. I will happily keep coming back.

Coming from SF, this is how you know you're in the suburbs. The skewers were delicious. A group of 4, we ordered 4 of each. Fast forward, it's Mom's Day, kids having meals on their own as parents, our celebration is to go somewhere good to have a meal, no lines (didn't make a res), kinda spontaneous. Hanabi fits the bill. Ordered the pork belly ramen ( looked really good at a neighboring table) and the Mayu-ramen, spicy, with kfc chicken (not what you think, means something else), both with a miso base. Wait was reasonable, time to get a table was 30 seconds tops. Other nights it's been jammed but not Mom's Day, just quiet, enjoyable. Both meals were spectacularly reasonable, serving what you'd want, with enough of everything to want to dive in because you were pretty assured you were going to be satisfied. Not fru-fru or bougie, ingredients that make the dish memorable yet feel you are knowledgeable and appreciated. Pork belly was soft, fatty yet lean, cooked well enough to be tender, yet with a little chew (not disintegrating like some bellies), lots of noodles al dente so you appreciate the noodle was not a mushy mass in the bowl like some places. The Mayu came with 3 drumsticks burning hot from the fryer but oh so good because it's served in a separate dish so it doesn't get soggy. The spicy is good enough to keep things interesting with losing its identity (unlike a lot of places). And they give plenty of ramen because it's that good. We keep coming back because they serve no-frills, you-can-bank-on-it ramen that is satisfying, consistent; staff is friendly without being overbearing. It's not a big place, tables and a counter, but they know how to keep diners happy and coming back for more. What more can you ask for? Thanks, Hanabi, will definitely be back!
