It's hard to describe the dishes because the cuisine is distinct, but it reminds me a little of Malaysian, Laotian, Thai, and maybe even some Vietnamese. All three of the dishes I got were delicious but I was most surprised by the Red Curry Shan Tofu. It tastes nothing like Thai Red Curry, definitely its own thing. Kiddos loved the coconut rice, shan tofu, and salt and pepper crispy chicken but everything we tried was delicious. Service was not so great, It wasn't crowded (less than 4 tables) and service could be better. We went here over the weekend and tried a few dishes. We got the tea salad, which had a bitter flavor because the peanuts and garlic were burnt. We tried the palata and curry and the curry was so watered down and didn't have much flavor. I also think it's more of a Malaysian dish than Burmese. We had the coconut noodle soup. This was the highlight of the meal. I love ordering this at a lot of Burmese and Northern Thai restaurants. I would recommend it. read more

If you've never had Burmese food, you should try it! This was my first time eating at this place, and it did not disappoint. I was craving the fermented tea salad. The tea gives the dressing a very distinct and delicious flavor. Then they add several yummy toppings over the lettuce. I wanted an entree too, so I ended up with the eggplant garlic with beef, and a side of rice. It was so good. I took it to-go and the staff was very nice. The place looked clean and they have tables outside. Unfortunately, no one else was in there. I've visited numerous, typically after consuming a couple of glasses of wine at a nearby winery. The staff is always great, friendly and attentive. Sad to say... we tried Burma Place to-go for the first time in a while tonight and were shocked by how much the quality dropped. No complaints at all about the service, it's always great and the staff are always very friendly and kind. Our primary complaint is the food. Everything was watery and so much more bland than we remember. Even the comparison photos from our first review to now are so different. The mango chicken was probably the worst thing we ordered tonight. It just tasted like cooked chicken in salty, watery broth. None of the flavor stuck. It was gross to the point we barely touched it and tossed it out. Hoping it was just a one-off night and willing to try again... Maybe it's the fact that we came in around 8pm and it was near closing? But if that's what the food tastes like now we may not be coming back. Really disappointed and honestly upset about what might be happening here. Food to a restaurant is everything. If you lose the food, you lose the people. It was tasty, but not really a traditional tea leaf salad -- the dressing was made with fermented tea leaves, but otherwise it felt more like a regular salad. Still good though, and I'd order it again. The burmese pork curry was good, but the garlic noodles could have used a lot more garlic. My fiancé and I have eaten Burma Place before since his brother loves to eat here; we get catering from time to time so I'm familiar with their food. This will be the first time we've eaten at the restaurant! This place has a busy parking lot considering it shares the lot with numerous business. Come early to find parking! Upon walking in, it showed a clean environment and energetic atmosphere. There were two ladies working the front, with bubbly, energetic personalities that I couldn't help but smile at! They made everyone feel welcome with their friendliness. They knew their reoccurring customers by name and everyone would personally say goodbye to them. It solidified the idea that this place had excellent customer service. We had told them we would sit early, to wait for our friends, and they didn't give it a second thought. I ordered an IPA and my partner had their Singha Beer while we waited. (I took picture of an updated menu.) We ordered a small bite, palata with chicken curry, while we waited. It was perfectly crispy. The curry wasn't spicy and the chicken was fatty! We ate it entirely within 10 minutes. When our friends arrived, we ordered several dishes: garlic eggplant, chicken curry, pumpkin curry, broccoli garlic, Burma chicken, palatas, and coconut rice. I don't think words can describe how delicious everything was. Nothing was too spicy nor overly seasoned. Everything was just right and super savory. The coconut rice was divine and their Burma chicken was crunchy and sweet! We finished the evening with fried bananas and ice cream. It's not every day that food leaves me speechless. I felt comfortable sitting there, enjoying my food, conversing with my loved ones. These ladies truly served well and the food has exceptional quality. I will definitely be back! read more

I have never had Burmese food before and this is the only place I've found in all of southern California, all of California for that matter. What an impression it had made on me. Their vegetarian menu is extensive! They have so many yummy choices! I ended up getting the mango salad, the chili stir fried noodle with beef (i had the chow mein noodle replaced with flat egg noodle), the Burmese sausages, and the star of the show for me, the palata with curry dip, i chose the curry with chicken. The fluffy roti bread was one of the best bread I've had in the same group as naan. This roti bread was savory and soft and chewy and just altogether quite wonderful. The curry it came with was thick and robust in flavor. This appetizer is an absolute delight. I enjoyed the chili stir fried noodles also as the beef was tender, infused with deep flavor and completed this dish. The Burmese sausage lacked in flavor for me. These sausages were on the sweeter side. Just not my flavor profile. I later went to Spicy Lao Kitchen and ordered lao sausages. Now thats a sausage. It was amazing! The mango salad could be infused with more mango flavor. This salad was too light for me and even tasted bitter. All and all I still thoroughly enjoyed the salad. The service was stellar. I had a wonderful conversation with Marlo and she was a joy to be around. The inside is decent sized and plenty of tables. There is more than 1 server so thats nice. Lol. The hours are weird. 11am-230pm and then 4pm-9pm. I saw people coming in at 215pm! I will definitely be making my way here next time! read more

Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday during lunch. We were able to come during a weekday and arrived around 11:30 so there was plenty of parking and we didn't hit the lunch rush. We opted to sit outside as it was a nice day and the tables are in the shade. After reviewing the menu we got - Tea leaf salad - Pumpkin chicken stew - Burmese Eggplant curry - Coconut brown rice The first time I had tea last salad it was a very memorable experience. Though this wasn't exactly what I remember from the first time, it still is quite tasty and has many lovely textures and flavors. I enjoy the fermented tea leaves and the peanuts added a nice crunch. The pumpkin chicken was a bit sweet, as expected from pumpkin. The chicken was well cooked and the pumpkin was in big chunks. The eggplant was very tasty. The sauce was a good savory flavor and the eggplant was nicely cooked. I can't really say that the coconut rice tasted much different than regular rice so next time I go, I'll probably stick to the regular. Our server was delightful and checked in on us, refilling water and happily answered questions when we asked about another party's selections that we saw through the window. As the only Burmese restaurant in San Diego, Burma place is solid. I ordered the eggplant in garlic sauce with shrimp, a side of rice, the palata appetizer, and the pumpkin curry. The eggplant was definitely the star. It was cooked perfectly to the point that the eggplant melted in your mouth. I asked for a side of chili oil- this is hands down some of the best tasting and spiciest chili I've had in a while! It paired so well with the sweetness of the pumpkin curry. Dinner service on a busy Saturday evening could have been better if there were more staff. Only saw two wait staff taking orders and serving at 5pm. Seated immediately but the table was not very clean with crumbs on the table as well as the dinner ware. We asked for chopsticks and received one single chopstick in it's red paper sleeve. The water was room temperature tap with no ice on a warm day. We ordered shan tofu, rainbow salad, basil lemongrass swai, nan gyi thoke noodles. The flavors were all subtle yet complex as we dined family style and the portions were great for sharing. Rainbow salad with tamarund dressing was cool and refreshing on a warm day. Shan tofu has a unique texture and the sauce complimented it well. Brasil lemongrass swai has a crispy crunch and subtle flavors. Nan Gyi Thoke noodles were a very interesting pleasant surprise with rich flavor and textures.I plan a return visit to try other dishes and hope they hire more wait staff and train them better. Husband and I eat pretty healthy so this was perfect because we could customize the amount of toppings we wanted in there. Dried some of that curry powder on its own with some chicken and it was lovely again so I bet the Burmese Chicken Curry would also be amazing. Nan gyi thoke - 11/10 I have not had a noodle dish in so long and especially one that tasted this good! I was a little skeptical about the high calories because it was a coconut curry but man this was an amazing dish! Also didn't feel too heavy because there was a good amount of chicken and noodles and just the right amount of little bit of Curry to hold it all together but not too much. Kebat chicken - 8/10 I know people left a lot of good reviews for this, but it was just okay. Not a wow factor compared to other items. A little strong in flavor. Love the mint taste and how soft the chicken was though! Coconut Rice - 10/10 We got this after so many reviews talked about it, and it's definitely worth trying! Light and fluffy and perfect amount of sweetness from the coconut milk. Really goes well with the curry items. Sweet black sticky Rice - 8.5/10 I was actually surprised that this dish was hot and not cold! Steaming hot sticky rice pudding with cool vanilla ice cream on the side. I think that combination is what made it work because too much of the rice on its own would be a little extra. Husband and I split this and it was a good amount split between two people. One of the beef dishes I have ever tasted with many different but unrecognizable spices. I've been here multiple times and every time the food, service (shoutout to Marlo & Cindy) and atmosphere (love those 90s playlists) is excellent. Every bite was delightful, the platters were large enough for leftovers, and the prices were fair. Hidden but a definite gem. The kinda spot where locals are known and treated like family. We initially were referred by a friend and they did not disappoint. You are immediately met with kindness and a very welcoming feel. The restaurant is not large but decor and vibe is great. It can get a little chilly so def bring a small jacket. Was rather surprised and delighted to find such a delicious ethnic restaurant in a strip mall in Rancho Bernardo. Had the unique tea leaf salad, super refreshing, especially on a hot day. I ate far more of it than I thought I would, but there was still enough to take home a good portion. Usually I go to ethnic or small plates restaurants with my family or friends that like to share plates. This time, I went with a friend who did NOT want salad. She had a curry with chicken and loved it. Note on the salad, add a protein if the salad is going to be your meal. I forgot to do that. It would go well with shrimp, tofu or chicken protein. I had the coconut rice as a side and took half of it home. I considered it my desert. Super yummy. The staff were very nice and cheerful. Yelp is saying that I should consider the "ambiance." The ambiance is one of a strip mall restaurant and its restroom. Clean but no real effort made to jazz it up. The tables were well spaced tho, which I appreciated. Noise level was good. You good hear your dining companion and actually have a conversation. Rancho Bernardo is very lucky to have this restaurant. I plan on going back with my husband and a few other people so that I can try more of the dishes. (I did not take pics because there are already pics of the dishes in other reviews.)
