I've wanted to come here for a while. Now that I'm based in Alameda, I gave it a shot. I came on a Saturday around 12 pm expecting a line, but we were seated right away. The servers were so friendly and very helpful in explaining the menu. We got: Tea leaf salad - different but YUMMY. Plata - SO GOOD. Like dough-y pita bread with dipping curry! (they need to give you more curry though!) and I got some noodle dish with curry chicken, parsley, egg, ground peanut and fried onion. Wow, the meat dishes must be amazing because the veggie stuff was inedible. We ate here once shortly after it opened--just after they purchase it from the owner of Hinn Tha Burma Bistro (which was awesome). We ordered a number of veggie-friendly dishes and they were without qualification, the worst dishes I have ever purchased outside of a fast food establishment. I'll eat just about anything if I pay $9 for it, but I literally took one bite of this stuff and that was it. What's more, the waiter didn't seem at all interested in that fact that we weren't eating our food. Yikes-nice customer service, bro. I enjoyed my order (Garlic noodles with barbeque pork) as well as the others' (the fermented tea leaf salad, the coconut rice, the chicken/tofu, etc.) The good: The aura was nice and airy (high ceilings) and the location was right down the cute strip of shops and where the festival was that day. The bad: However, as my friend Sylvia said, it was probably because we went on Mothers' Day that she ended up waiting over an hour for her food to arrive all while she watched us eat. And it wasn't until about an hour later that the server came over to the table to let her know that they didn't have the rice to make her dish. But they did not charge us for her dish, so that was good. My garlic noodles w/ the barbeque pork (you had the option of choosing between different types of meat to go with the noodle like duck) was $9, so the price was decent as well. And Christine, who was also sitting with us, is allergic to peanuts to they made sure to not have any in the 2nd order of the tea leaf salad that she ordered for herself. Though I tasted it both with and without peanuts and the peanuts to give it more flavor, even though it was still good without. So overall, my personal experience was good at this place, but I did feel for my friend Sylvia sitting at the same table not having the best experience so I take off 1 stars. read more

I went to your SF location many times to find a swarm of people outside and a long wait time that steered me away from trying your tasty food. Thank goodness I discovered you hidden away and now I finally fulfilled my goal to try you, twice actually... Appetizers - Burmese Samusas: Chicken or vegetarian 5 pieces, but only 3 pieces came out. The rest came out a while later. Pretty good, better without the house special sauce. - Roasted Calamari: Thick and fat with a puffy batter outer layer. Chewy and overly oily. *skip* Soup - Vegetarian Samusa Soup: It's like soggy samusas in an Indian/Thai fusion soup. A hint spiciness, not too much and a bit sour. Alright, but great with a side of jasmine rice or their Platha (Indian pan fried layered bread, but extremely oily!!) . Salads - Tea Leaf Salad: I've never tried a tea leaf salad with lettuce as an additional ingredient, but this is my FAV dish here! Skip the jalapenos if you are spicy conscious like me. *Must Order* - Rainbow Salad: 22 different ingredients, but it seems like much less. I love the addition of noodles in this dish, but this one was a bit too spicy for me (stinging lip kind of spicy!) Entree - Spicy Chicken with Fresh Basil: Chicken breast with lemongrass, basil, garlic and sweet peas. Hold off on the salt, please! Way too salty. - Spicy and Crispy Chicken: Deep fried chicken breast in a sweet and tangy sauce. Like orange chicken at Panda Express, but much more gooier sauce that sticks like glue. Not too spicy and it came with broccoli, which I liked. - Garlic Noodles w/ duck: Salt overload! - Wok Tossed Broccoli: Broccoli topped with fried onions. I'm really getting a salt OD! Sides Love the coconut rice, Tan Poi (basmatti rice) was spiced up (not in a hot/spicy way) a bit too much for me, and Jasmine rice is always the safe alternative. Dessert - Jackfruit nutella eggrolls w/coconut ice cream: love the ice cream, I can taste large pieces of young coconut and the egg rolls weren't bad at all. Definitely order the MANGO LASSI, the best I've tasted by far! Even better than at Indian restaurants. Everything was either overly salty or oily, but I would come back only for the tea leaf salad. My friend who happens to be a chef decided on Burma Superstar one evening and we had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated. Trust me, the wait is worth it. The restaurant is very casual and simple, yet classy. Service was top-notch. Our server was personable, friendly, and checked up on us often to refill our drinks, and grab whatever we needed. Here's a quick breakdown of our dinner: +Thai iced tea: refreshing balance of half and half (?) and tea. Delicious. +Calamari: the crisp and light batter with scallions and peppers worked perfectly with the sweet dipping sauce. +Garlic noodles with pork: delicious. It could have used more garlic but the soft, flat noodles and the tender pork made the dish a must-try. +Sesame beef: tender slices of fried beef tossed in a sweet sauce and coated with sesame seeds. Also another favorite. +Coconut rice with fried onions: I don't really care too much for coconut or onions but the side of rice was pretty good! You can taste the subtle hint of coconut milk which added a sweetness the soft and fluffy bed of white rice. The serving size of the dishes are definitely made to share. And with the quality of each dish, it's definitely worth trying a little bit of everything. FOOD: the food is exceptional!!! - Burmese samosas: our server ordered us a 1/2 lamb and 1/2 chicken variety. We ended up loving the lamb!!! It tasted like curry with potatoes inside of a roti empanada? Can't grasp a good description of this... Might as well just try it!!!!! - Garlic noodles w/ duck: did I even taste garlic now that I think about it? I'm not sure... It was just so good and I was so hungry that I chowed it down! I almost didn't want to share with my boyfriend! After we finished, I almost ordered another one to take home! - Braised pork belly: good thing I didn't order that other fried rice because this satisfied my tastes completely! Have you ever had ramen and thought that if the meat were marinated and separated... You would be able to eat an endless supply? (No? Only me?) Well, that's what this is!! It's not endless but they give you a pretty good amount! Paired with their Burmese fried rice and you'll be satisfied for the rest of the night! You have sweetness, softness and juiciness of the meat and mushrooms... Plus a taste completely opposite with the rice. LOCATION: parking on the street will be a struggle but they have a garage nearby. The wait isn't bad, they bring out the food fast so tables turn quickly! Plus, when you get there you sign in on a clipboard and leave your number which means that you can walk around park street and shop for a bit! (Although most of their shops close early around 6/7) SERVICE: our server was extremely friendly! Honestly, I was distracted by how good the food was but nothing went wrong, we got our food fast, everything fast which we love! To sum this up: I'll be back next week to try their famous salads... Woo Hoo! this is the find of the month for me or anyone stuck in exile here in the East Bay. An excellent Burmese place on par or even better than Burma Superstar. The food is equal to Burma Superstar, but instead of waiting for an eon in the cold of the Richmond District, you can either get a table right away or after a short wait in the comfortable bar. And the atmosphere is less hipster dorm room and more grown-up restaurant. The SF location (aka Burma Superstar) was just way too crowded and I can enjoy my oh so good rainbow salad (dam I'm craving for it now) without waiting 30 minutes or even more just for a table. The platha here tastes hella yummy!! I just need some curry sauce to make it taste even better (like roti prata). The garlic noodles on the other hand tasted average. I have two words for you: tea salad. Tea is one of the most under-utilized flavors in the culinary palette, IMO. It presents well as a liquid at any temperature, but most people don't go solid with it (yet, there's green tea ice cream, green tea creme brulee). Everyone knows it can be sweetened (and anyone who's been to Texas is not always happy about that), but it also is great savory (to wit, yummy chinese tea and anise-soaked hard boiled eggs). And unlike its overused and overpowering cousin, coffee, tea pairs more subtly with chocolate. (Compatibility with chocolate is the yardstick of any flavor, and chocolate truffles infused with jasmine and ylang ylang I recently devoured in Paris are proof that tea measures up.) But I digress. Back to Burma Superstar. Here, apart from generally excellent and cheap burmese soups, curries and stir-fry, you'll find a lovely savory, crunchy, salty tea salad. (Adorably, the menu describes this dish as a 'party in your mouth'.) Yes, it tastes like tea. And yes, it's addictive. Order it. read more

After my second time here giving it another shot, I can say with full confidence that Burma just isn't for me. The first time here the only thing I liked was the tea leaf salad but after several bites the flavors became overwhelming. I wish they had a smaller size. The second time here I enjoyed the food a little more but it's still just a three star rating for me. The garlic prawns were good but it wasn't a specialty dish that u can't find elsewhere that tastes similar. The chili pork with ginger was okay. The first time here I had some kind of chicken stew and I didn't like it very much. I thought giving it another try based on how many people love it here was worth changing my mind. I was wrong. We ordered garlic noodle (not enough garlic flavor), Burmese Style Curry Lamb (impressive), spicy string beans (delicious), Garlic and Chili Shrimp (ok), Tea leaf salad ( 2nd best out of 7 Burmese I have tried in CA and NYC). cocktail drinks. It's a very busy place and waiters were overwhelmed with requests from all the guests. If you want to come here for dinner, I would suggest to come before 6pm to avoid the crowd. Went to this place Friday night around 9 pm. Expected to get a decent seating right away. We came in and saw a table empty, however waitress told us to wait for 2 people's table. We wait about 20 minutes and still no "smaller table available, we told the waitress that since it is already 9 o'clock at night and we promise to order decent amount of food to make up 4 people table, she still insist us to wait. I don't know anything about Burmese cuisine, so I can't say much there, but I can comment on what I ate and the service. We walked in off the street just before 7 pm and while the place was busy, we were seated instantly. They've packed a lot of tables into a small space so when getting to my chair I had to decide whether to give the couple seated next to us a view of my booty or not. I literally slid between the two tables, and sadly, no lap dance for them. The service was pretty good and fast but our server was young and kind of tentative about everything. We ordered two chicken dishes and I asked what they came with and was surprised to find we'd have to pay extra for rice. wtf? it's rice, at the very least serve it with plain basmati or jasmine and if people want the coconut or Tan Poi they can pay more for it. I had the Tan Poi and boy was it dry and chewy. I didn't finish it or take it home with me. My spicy chicken with fresh basil was very spicy, but was pretty sparse on the sweet peas. They also screwed up the timing and served my entree with both our rices without my husband's entree, so we waited for several minutes until I realized my food was getting cold. I shared my chicken with him and we started eating. I think it probably took about 5-8 minutes before his entree made it to the table. I have friends that rave about this place, but to me it was just ok. I'm sure we'll eat there again even though it was a bit pricey for what we got. read more

HOWEVER, when we go on a Tuesday at 11:30am, I want the lunch menu. We usually get the lunch menu. The portions are perfect and the price is great. It's really just right for the two of us. But a couple times we've been handed the dinner menu. The portions are HUGE and the prices are accordingly larger. I am sorry but for lunch I don't want a huge bowl of sesame chicken and have to pay an extra for a large amount of rice. We asked for the lunch menu which were sitting right below the dinner menus in a basket but they said they no longer used those menus and that it had changed. I know I had seen lunch specials on the wall however my Fiancee is a picky eater and we already have our favorite dishes we like to order. I don't usually like to complain but I really think the management needs to realize that on a weekday at 11am, a lunch menu is really more appropriate. If you are comparing to Chinese food (another a la cart type of restaurant), they only have certain lunch specials. But their individual a la cart items are smaller than Burma Superstar's and cheaper. We used to go every single week for lunch on Tues or Weds, but I hate to say that if the lunch menu is a thing of the past, our weekly lunch date may be as well. I'll of course still go for dinner when the mood strikes. I'm sad to lose our favorite lunch spot. One of the best dining experiences i've ever had in my life. The wait was like an hour, but the I had never had Burmese and the popularity of it made me want to wait. OH MY GOD, it was so worth it. The tea leaf salad was out of this world. The mango tofu was to die for. Instead of rice, we had garlic noodles. The drinks were phenomenal and our dessert was unspeakably good. I could rave more about the food, but the essential jist of it is eat here, its absolutely wonderful. This immediately became my favorite restaurant. There's not much to add to the many reviews already written on yelp. -Expect a wait! (But it's a welcome surprise if you get right in.) -Since it is so very busy, service can be quite slow. Our server was really friendly and helpful, but was very busy - so filling drinks or getting our check took awhile. -I can only speak for the dishes I tried, but the Tea Leaf Salad, as well as the Nan Gyi Dok - both were delicious! I decided it would be best to dine here with my boyfriend instead of Hang Ten after experiencing an unnecessary & rude encounter with one of their employees. It was right as the doors were opening. We were the first to be seated and waited. I ordered so much, our waitress said: "Are you sure about that? It is a lot of food." Oooh man. Never underestimate my love for some lamb! I LOVE their Lamb curry! It's marinated in a slightly salty sauce with potatoes and mint. And their mango chicken is good, I just prefer their lamb options! The samosas were great but there was a center part that was still cold. No bueno. It wasn't so bad that it had to be fix; it was noticeable but I could live with it. The lamb kabat, I believe, is a dish cooked on the grill and topped with tomato, mint and other vegetables. The coconut rice is a personal favorite. It's absolutely delicious. It is quite expensive so coming here is either best on a special occasion, if you have or make that kind of money or when you want to treat yourself. It's still a good space. I had to approach 3 different servers for TOGO since no one said hello DESPITE the fact that I made eye contact with every single waiter/ess & I got bumped into about 4 times!!! #2. They took my order after 10 mins of no one acknowledging me while I stood right in front of the main bar!! They did get the order done in 15 mins like they said they would... that was a positive! #3. I would come here for the green tea leaf salad but other than that I thought this place was mediocre. I also ordered a curry with okra and hard boiled egg sounded real good on the menu but unfortunately lack of taste. Since I came with a friend who has a major sweet tooth we couldn't pass up on the dessert menu. So we opted for the thousand layer bread with vanilla ice cream and fresh strawberries and banana. The boyfriend wanted to head down to westside to go to Indian Palace off of Webster. I think that place is good, but the service is SERIOUSLY lacking for how much you have to pay. Anyhow, I logged into my Yelp account and put in "great salad" in Alameda and out popped this place! So we look at each other and say "What the heck, why not?" We both have never had Burmese cuisine, so no time like the present. Come to find out that Burmese cuisine is similar to Indian. I DID NOT SAY SAME, I SAID SIMILAR. Sometimes people get so objective about these reviews. We ordered the Clay chicken with Basmati rice (HIGHLY RECOMMEND) and the lamb with tomatoes (AGAIN HIGHLY RECOMMEND). The waiter thought we needed more rice so we ordered some brown rice as well. Personally I felt that we had enough, but they have all these flavored rices so i was down to try something new. The service was fantastic!! Everyone was very attentive and helpful. All in all I will be making this one of my regular spots (along with La Pinata, Toomies and Sushi House). A cross between Indian, Thai and Chinese cuisines, Burmese food offers a great dining experience and Burma SuperStar Restaurant definitely delivers on scrumptious Burmese dishes! The menu is filled with enticing dishes such as Burmeses samusas, sesame chicken, and garlic noodles. After carefully going through the menu, we finally decided on several dishes: For appetizers, we ordered the homemade vegetarian egg rolls filled with bean thread noodles, shredded cabbage, celery, and carrots. These orders also came with a spicy dipping sauce. The vegetarian egg rolls were simply delicious and more so with the spicy dipping sauce! Choosing a salad was the hardest -- we ended up ordering the okra salad with green peppers, sesame seeds, cucumbers, and fried onions. It was ridiculously good! The waiter even tossed the okra salad for us. For the main entrées, we ordered the spicy and crispy chicken (deep fried chicken breast in a sweet, tangy, and spicy sauce with chili and garlic) and the Burmese style catfish. And for side dishes, we ordered jasmine rice and platha ("1,000 layered" pan fried bread). Everything was so tasty and all the different flavors complimented each other! Though we did not order any dessert - the mango lassi was very rich and smooth! OVERRATED, 3 star at MOST. But I'm going to give them 2 stars because of their shitty reservation system. We almost lost our table to some douchebag who was posing as us over at the bar. You write down your name and phone number on this sheet... everyone can see it and read it. When it's your turn, they don't call the number, they just call out your name. This dick goes and jumps up after they call my name. He pretends he's us and starts walking towards the table, when my lady catches the problem and tells the hostess that it's us.. not this guy. They still ended up seating him right after us though.. before everyone else who was there before him. We ordered the salad which was dumb.. Just tasted like nuts, lady took the lemon used for it so I couldn't add any more. You get no other dressing.. so at least leave me that lemon! I call BS too, there is no way that they go all the way to Burma to pick the tea leaves. I'm sure that it's shipped to them but it's not personally delivered by them as they claim. Having seen yelp reports of incredible evening waits for a table, I go midday on weekends and get seated immediately. The staff is pleasant, attractive and always at least moderately competent. The food is to my taste, wonderful. Their tea leaf or rainbow salads are remarkable melanges of fresh, tasty, sprightly ingredients. Follow the salad with vegetable samosa soup. Samosa is crumbled into a spiced soup, retaining its crispness, and adding an edge of taste to the curried broth. Walnut shrimp. An old standby. But well done here. And get their coconut rice. Just spent $92 on a take out meal and it was some of the worst food I've ever had. Exorbitantly overpriced! We ordered two Tea Leaf salads to avoid the shrimp for one person. It turns out the shrimp comes in a little plastic container and is simply shrimp flakes, about 1 teaspoon full total! All 4 people were disappointed. Plus when we ordered from the online menu it quotes prices from the Clement St restaurant. They seemed high at the time so I was hoping they'd be cheaper in Alameda. Thank the lord there is a Burma Superstar offshoot in the East Bay. I left the city a week ago and I'm already craving the culinary delights I left behind. Luckily, Bagan meets my needs. Rainbow Salad? Check. Coconut Rice? Check. Tofu Vegetable Kebat? Check. AND, since this is Alameda and not SF, we didn't have to wait for a table on a Friday night. So You talk about the beef curry...well lemme' tell you I'm Filipino, and this is some olives & peppers short of some bad caldereta....DEFINATELY Killed a star from the review! Salmon was Okay Garlic Noodles w/ Duck was pretty darn good. The Samusas were the highlight of the meal. They're huge fans of the red sauce. I was over it halfway through. I thoroughly enjoyed the big Platha dessert ("thousand layer bread") with Strawberries, apple slices, Mango Sorbet & Vanilla Ice Cream! THe other star-killer was the price. $80 for: 2 Thai Iced Teas 4 piece Samusas appetizers one small plate of garlic noodles w/ duck one small plate of Beef Curry one small plate of Salmon 2 desserts. That's 80 dollars before tip, which they are attentive, but still. I heard all kinds of hype about this place, and for an $80 gamble I felt like I crapped out. It would have probable tasted better if it were $50. I personally think you're better off going to your favorite Thai Place, cuz the food is not far off from Burmese food. read more

My first trip to Burma SuperStar was before we bought our home, and were just stalking the neighborhood to see if we could really live in Alameda; a town that we had never even visited until that point. We were all starry eyed over the prospect of homeownership, and thrilled to sneak into a less crowded BSS to boot. See, Alameda is JUST LIKE San Francisco! We had the tea leaf salad, because you have to, and it was interesting. I don't think I'll crave those flavors again, but it was worth a shot. Since then we've eaten here two more times, each one a tasty treat. Just recently we had takeout, and even that (and the next day's leftovers) were divine. That mango beef with the coconut rice? I was going to be in Alameda for the weekend to visit some family and friends so I was looking up places to go eat. I know I've heard good things about Burma Superstar but never realized it was up in the bay area. I've never had Burmese food so I was excited to try. We had infants in our group so to work around their bedtime, we went super early and were waiting outside the moment they opened for dinner. We were seated immediately and the staff was very friendly and helpful throughout the whole meal. After going over the menu and looking at pictures prior, we ordered: Tea Leaf Salad- seemed to be one of their special items that everyone said to order. Maybe I had high expectations of this dish but I think it fell flat. I liked that there were many components of the salad and the texture was great but I didn't like the flavor of the "dressing" which is basically fermented tea leaves. To each his own though. Platha Bread- crispy, chewy, flaky, buttery goodness :heart eyes: I think I could have had 2 order of this to myself to be honest. Already delicious alone, it was just over the top delicious with the dip they give. Tastes like some sort of curry. Garlic Noodles- Egg noodles with crisp garlic and a slightly spicy sweet and sour garlic sauce (which we got on the side bc this was for the girls.) This was good but I did find myself thinking I could make it at home. Mango Shrimp- Big, juicy shrimp in this super flavorful mango sauce. I love sweet and salty foods so I thought this was delicious. Highly recommend! I just wish that the onions that come in this dish were actually cooked because the burn of the onion detracts from the flavor. Shrimp & Eggplant- My favorite of our shared entrees. So much depth of flavor. It was extremely savory and rich. Such high quality of shrimp. I want to say it was kind of an oyster sauce with other seasonings that I wish I knew! Pumpkin Chicken Stew- Will have to pass on this one next time. I thought it was ok but nothing special. We ended up taking that to go because we were all so full and by the next day, it already went bad and smelled so sour. Ideal but unlikely improvements I would like to see? Either larger portions or lower prices. Their food was great but I feel that they are overcharging for the amount they are giving. I would love to come back and try a couple other dishes next time I'm in town. read more
