My wife and I stopped after her Dr. Appointment to have lunch. She picked the place and we were very pleased with it. She ordered the 1/2. Lb. burnt ends for each of us. Our sides were onion rings, fried cornbread bites, corn and potatoes ! We each got two pieces of toast which came with sweet butter. Yum ! We each had a soda with the meal that totaled $43. Not bad considering we both ate all we wanted while taking home almost more than we had dining in. The place was very clean especially for hitting it just after the lunch rush. Our servers were very friendly and attentive. The burnt ends were very tender, juicy & had amazing smoky flavor. Every side was amazing as we did have quite a variety to share. Strip mall BBQ is usually dismissed out of hand. I'm truly glad I didn't. I had the burnt ends sandwich and it was incredibly good. The ends themselves were moist with a little bit of crunch from the char. The onion straws on the sandwich added more crunch and the nice onion flavor. Burnt Ends BBQ features a unique spin on BBQ. They have these burnt end bowls, that have baked beans, or Mac and cheese, topped with crispy onions, cornbread pieces, then burnt ends. It was very delicious! I really enjoyed it. However, either I was really hungry, or the portions may have been a little small. I will say being the BBQ capital, there are other places that have been in business for years that you may want to try first if you're visiting. We stopped by to pick up dinner on Saturday Night, the restaurant was clean and everyone was friendly. We purchased 2 orders of chicken wings a burnt end sandwich and a beef burnt end platter with 3 sides totaling $77. The wings were delicious! My daughter said her burnt end sandwich was delicious, and her macaroni was ok. The burnt end platter cost like $21 and was so small for the price, (the photo is what we received before anyone touched it) but I guess all the sides covers the price. They can definitely add more burnt ends, the burnt ends also contained more fatty pieces than meat. Maybe we received the last pieces. Recently went back to Kansas City and decided to give Burnt End BBQ a try. Upon entering into the restaurant I was greeted with that all too familiar scent of hickory and cherry wood smoke that draws so many faithful into Kansas City BBQ havens. With generous portions of brisket and burnt ends, both were well-seasoned, tender and the rendered fat made the succulent meat unforgettable. The cheesy corn had bits of smoked ham and the French fries were crispy and paired well with the Original Thick N Bold sauce and Honey Glaze BBQ sauce. Although this isn't my favorite Kansas City BBQ spot, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to out of towners. read more

We were greeted with a hearty "Hello!" As we entered the restaurant. The menu is displayed on the wall leading to the counter to place an order. All of the menu items were written in detail as not to confuse a new customer. The smells of the food really tickled our noses to help the experience we were about to experience. The only thing is after we decided on what we were going to eat and started ordering- I noticed a sign behind the counter by the cashier with their "Daily Specials ". That would have been nice to have been seen maybe at the door as we entered. But no biggie. The cashier was extremely pleasant AND Very helpful in explaining their sauces. After placing our order and while waiting on our food the other employees were just as friendly as the cashier. We selected a couple of different sauces to try and as we walked back over to the takeout counter we walked through the seating area. Nice and clean (if we weren't doing takeout we would have enjoyed the atmosphere by dining in. ) As the cashier was placing out food in the bags; she not only wrote on the boxes what meal was which. She also wiped the boxes off to assure there was no oil/food on the outside. She also asked if we needed eating utensils! The food was still warm by the time we got to our destination. It was Pulled Pork sandwich with onion strings and coleslaw was delicious and my fries were nice and crispy. Someone in our group swapped fries for the rice (for a $2.00) up charge They said the rice was rather bland but their sandwich was good. They were better than exceptional. I ordered a margarita. The size was less than impressive and forgettable. For my main meal, I had a jalapeño beef and pork sausage link / dog . I've had grocery store sausages that were better. I did have fried cornbread bites as my side, and I thought those were wonderful. One in my party ordered the two meat platter. Burnt and pulled pork was his meat choices. His side was their hickory pit beans. Wow those should be sold in grocery stores.!! The other one in my party ordered six wings baked potato salad. Once again, the side was very exceptional. I was not a fan of the wing flavor. The last thing that I tried was their sauce. They have four flavors and I enjoyed all of them!! Adding Burnt End BBQ to my Top 5 list! You place your order at the counter and then they deliver the food to your table. Ordered the Blue Ribbon Platter so we could sample a little bit of everything. The platter comes with ribs, burnt ends, pulled pork and turkey. All of it was great although the turkey was on the dry side. Served alongside the platter: toast, pickles, fries, coleslaw, and beans. They will let you substitute sides for a 0.99 upgrade. While I love fries and mac n cheese (and they were good here) they seem to be a staple at every bbq spot so it was nice to try a new side and let me tell ya those cornbread bites were the best! My favorite part was all of the sauce choices. Most places have an original and a spicy option. Burnt End BBQ has at least 6 to choose from which means something for everyone! I tried the original, bold, and sweet. Across from the drink/sauce station they have silverware and to go boxes set up. I am a New Yorker travelling with a wife from central Texas and her grown son. They know far more about good barbecue than I will ever know. They are hard to impress, when it comes to barbecue. My fries were good (4 stars). They did not like them as much. I had two burnt ends sandwiches and a brisket sandwich. They said that the side orders (except French fries) were small portions. I thought the French fries were four stars. My wife and her son thought they were more like two stars. The restaurant was clean and everyone was nice to us. There is a lot of close parking. WOWOWOWOWOWOW. Was brought here to try great Kansas City BBQ and I was not disappointed. First off Ill just get out of the way the staff is really nice, the space is clean, and the menu is diverse and well priced. There are a TON of sauce options, ranging from traditional to super spicy to everything in-between, so theres something for everyone and its definitely fun to try them all! My group of 6 got a variety of dishes, but I'll point out the standout ones. First of all, the Burnt End's.....I had no idea that this was even a thing. I guess most BBQ places just include this portion of the meat in the regular brisket, but Burnt End BBQ prepares it separately. You end up with these soft fatty chunks of meat that melt in your mouth...delicious! The Mac n cheese was yummy, classic side for me to get with BBQ. Also got the Cucumber salad which was a refreshing side. The pulled pork was really good, soft and flavorful. The dishes came with a big piece of toast too so you could make a mini sandwhich if you want! Everything I wanted and more in a BBQ place, I hope to be back next time Im in the area! read more

Great to try a new non traditional KC BBQ place. You order in line, pay at the other end of line. Where you pay is also where the food comes out, meets drink and sauce area so it gets very congested. Tried all the sauces before the food came out, 3 for sauces. I ordered 2 meat plate with turkey and sausage. Best turkey in KC, sausage had great flavor but a casing that wasn't the best. Beans and potato salad both get a 5. My wife had ribs and burnt ends. Ribs were a bit chewy but burnt ends were delicious. We also shared 6 smoked wings which were pretty good as well, liked that they fried after smoking so not rubbery. I gotta say, with such Burnt Ends, give me a break! These guys are killing the Burnt End game, with such salty, umami-ladened goodness. Maybe people with opinions about this don't smoke their own meat, but I do...bravo, honestly. Well done. The beans had a bit of an acrid element to them, almost coffee-like, with tougher skin; when I encounter a bad bean, I bum out. It was edible, but there's considerable room for improvement. It has to do with the salt levels while cooking, and a pan that's too hot for the dry ingredients. I'd suss it out, because they're not terrible, and worth a polish. The onion rings were again, absolutely superb. You know what makes a great onion ring? The bite test: if you bite it and in one shot the bite separates cleanly from the whole - with onion flavor still relevant under a flawless crunch - you got the goods. Burnt End my friend, has the goods! Brisket is king; I'd say burnt ends here are tops, but brisket is always king anywhere. These guys do it right, man. No fussing about. Excellent smoke, expert pull, the flavor is right, moisture content is accurate, bark is umami, fat cap is trimmed almost perfectly...I'd definitely buy this again. I've had better brisket, but regarding the list of best places, top 5 easily - and I've had a lot of barbecue over the last 30 KC years. Finally, the fries could use less salt, and the sauces could be more development and less sugar; and can someone tell someone important that strawberries and peaches are loved because they are sweet. When's the last time you bit an acrid or bitter strawberry and told yourself you were happy about it? Sweeten you Strawberry tea, trust me. I liked having lunch here a lot, but for the price it could do for an increase in value. Having said that, it's barbecue, and unless you tried to muster this meat magic from the etherial yourself once before, you have no vote - so pay the hard-worked man. There was about 10 sausage slices which i thought was plenty, but the pulled pork was only about 4 oz...I thought it could have been a little more. The Mac & Cheese was very cheesy and was pretty much what you would expect it to be. The beans (which I use to compare my new BBQ joints) was very good. We were visiting the area on a road trip and were a little overwhelmed with all of the restaurant choices, particularly BBQ restaurants. After debating forever we finally just said "let's just try this Burnt End BBQ place". It turned out to be an great decision! We ordered the Royal Platter and one of the bowls because we were starving and wanted to try some of everything. It was a complete BBQ feast with all the trimmings. Some of the highlights were the burnt ends (of course), pulled pork, and the hickory pit beans. The cheesy grits were also very good. Nothing was bad. Lots of good smoke flavor all around. It was all so tasty that it was hard to stop eating even after getting full. There is also a small but decent beer selection. I had a local porter that I would definitely get again. They also have an array of bbq sauces. I recommend trying a small amount of all of them like we did to find out which one(s) you like the best. Service was good and friendly. A little dirty in the dining area but nothing really to complain about. Burnt End BBQ isn't at the top of the list when people discuss KC BBQ, but it's good stuff and should be in the conversation anytime lunch options are reviewed in Overland Park. Burnt End BBQ is located in a strip center at the busy intersection of Metcalf and 119th - it's a minor magic trick to find your way in and out from the main road, but once you're there, plenty of parking is always available. Orders are placed fast-food style by walking up to the register, but the food is delivered to your table by a server. Soft drink and bbq sauce options are self-service at a station in the dining room near where you pay for your food. The restaurant has the look of something that could be franchised at some point in the future. One thing I'm a little confused about is the fact that they charge more for iced tea than soft drinks. If I remember correctly, the price was about 40 cents more for tea. I've never seen this before. This could be because they offer some flavored teas, but I'm pretty sure they make a very sweet profit on the unflavored and unsweet tea I always order. Let's begin the food discussion by starting with their namesake Burnt Ends - they aren't the best in town, but they are still quite good. The squares of meat are cut a tiny bit smaller than many local restaurants, but the beef is always moist and flavorful. And, I've never seen them run out of burnt ends, or only offer them on certain days of the week like some other restaurants. In 2018 they placed bottles of a few of their "regular" bbq sauces on each dining room table. If you wanted their unique/special flavors of bbq sauce, you needed to fill a small plastic cup from a pump dispenser next to the soft drink fountain. They no longer keep any bottles of sauce on the tables, so now all flavors of sauce must be self-dispensed before you sit down. With one exception, all the meats are good - ribs (why St. Louis style, this is KC!), ham, turkey, sausage (cut in coins), pulled pork - but not the best in the area. The exception is their chicken wings. I enjoy their moist smoky wings very much, and my wife is crazy about them. She also appreciates the seasonal veggies side option, something that isn't offered at a many KC BBQ joints. I have one favorite side item, and another side item I'm very disappointed in. My disappointing item is the fries. I have this complaint about a number of restaurants, and it's something I think is important in an establishment like Burnt End BBQ. How much money did the owners invest in the property, and the kitchen equipment, and the dining room furniture, and the registers, etc., etc? - Only to pull a bag of frozen French fries from the walk-in and toss them in the fryer! It absolutely astounds me that so many restaurants care so much for their meats and a few other signature items but they completely ignore the incredible appeal of fresh cut fries that are essential for a great BBQ meal. I could open a bag of Ore-Idas at home if I want, you don't need to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in a restaurant to do it, and I don't need to go to Burnt End BBQ to get them either. I absolutely fail to understand why they, or any other non-fast-food restaurant serves them. On the bright side, I love their white cheddar grits. I'm not a particularly huge grits fan, but these are always moist and tasty and they really compliment the meat very well. As you can see, I have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with Burnt End BBQ. It's good stuff, an excellent lunch option, at least a 3.5 which I'll score as a 4, but it has the potential to be much better if they wanted to be. read more
