So I've been here twice, and both times have yielded pleasant results. The two bartenders I've met so far were both friendly, interesting people with an impressive knowledge of the beers available. Impressive considering that they rotate in a new beer every time one runs dry. By declaration of the brewist monks the atmosphere is quiet and relaxing, producing a non-aggressive social environment conducive to meeting new people. This is a great aspect for those of us trying to avoid the whole spring break gone wild, mating ritual, please stop trying to hi-five me, scene. Monks, murals, and merriment. One of the best places to get Belgian beer (although no kitchen for frites or moules like Vol de Nuit). A small space, it's epicenter is the wooden bar with taps of fresh revolving beer. Each time, there's a chance to try something new and fizzy as the tap turns over quickly and selection changes. The walls are painted of medieval times of convivial and bawdy monastery scenes. When we first discovered the place, the barkeep, Trevor wore a monk's robe, played a Gregorian chant and hushed the crowd. Lately, we haven't seen him (graduated and gone to China?) and the volume isn't maintained - regrettably. There are a handful of small wooden tables and stools surrounding the bar and even a small patio area. The wobbly sticky wooden tables with the lip to catch liquid add to the charm. read more

Burp Castle, The name itself appeals to the 7 year old in all of us. However this bar is anything but childish (see what I did there?) To call this place a "bar" doesn't do it justice, its a mecca for beer. The selection of beer (10 craft beers on tap when I was there) is guaranteed to introduce you to at least a few beers you've never heard of. Sure, the bartenders dress like Monks, there are naked angels stealing barrels of beer painted on the walls and the tables won't accommodate a group of 12 but that's not the point of the Burp Castle. When you're getting off work and you just want to enjoy a great beer in a relaxing environment I highly suggest stopping by the Burp Castle. read more

My 3 stars are merely because I dragged 6 of my closest friends to this bar in hopes of a bar that we (20-something, college graduates looking to relive our past) could get down and dirty and burp the hell out of our neighbor. If you've been to this place, you probably understand that this was definitely not what we were expecting, though it gets some swanky mcswank points considering we were imagining a dingey and dark hole in the wall. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! Walls - murals of heaven, beer wenches, monks, etc. Awesome. Beers - rotating taps of awesomeness, plus the bartender will always let you try a sample of whatever you want before you decide. Atmosphere - monks! I've heard it nicknamed "The Monk Bar" because the bartender will SHUSH everyone at random intervals when it gets "too loud." They'll stop shushing and gradually the volume will rise (esp on a Friday or Saturday night) and then the shushing will commence, and so on throughout the night. People - always really chill people here. Beer enthusiasts, chill East Villagers, and bartenders are usually ready to strike up a conversation if you find yourself alone there. Happy hour is $1 off all beers, and is generally pretty empty around 5 pm. Great standby when you need a reliable place with great beer selection. AND it's right next door to Jimmy's 43, another place with a fantastic craft selection. read more

Cute place, and good for a drink when you want to have an actual conversation at a bar. It's a bit quirky -- teeny tiny tables and stools in a quaint space with candles and high ceilings. The beer selection is sort of small, and the woman behind the counter the night I went didn't seem to know too much about the beers. She said that one of the beers tasted like it had a lot of spices, but it actually tasted like a Budweiser. Not good. It's a good place to go to if you want to actually speak and be heard by those you are with and be in a nice space where you can sit, but if you are looking for a diverse selection of beers on tap, look elsewhere. Hail Burp Castle, full of geeks. It would have been nice if the place were actually quiet, but it's not. The SHHHH from the bartenders punctuates the rise in volume, and it dies down for a few minutes, but goes right back up. And then, SHHHHH. Lather, rinse, repeat. It got old fast. I'm glad I was here with a date, because this place was a sausagefest, and not in a good way. I expected a game of Magic to break out near the back. This was a flashback to bad grad student bars that I've had more than enough of. Hey favorite bars! This is a hole in the way bar where the bartender will literally shush you if the bar is getting too loud. I love this because when you just want to catch up with friends, you don't want a ridiculously loud bar playing music, you want something relaxing and home-y feeling. This bar is pretty small inside and also has an outdoor component. I like being outside because you can people watch. I want to like Burp Castle but this evening was a drag. I came in to enjoy some belgian beers to find most of the usuals, i.e. not much rare or hard to find, and the prices were steep [is there a higher import tax in nyc?]. Being from PDX I'll admit that I am spoiled with beer bars but I did dig the monk-vibe they were going for. I think the reason it was a bummer is that there was a local home brewers meetup going on which commanded the bar, shushing anyone who talked above a whisper. While I was alone and silent it was distracting to constantly hear shushing. I can see enjoying the quiet atmosphere on a normal night but they literally didn't want anyone else talking at all, which is unrealistic for a bar. read more

I think this place was made for me. Came here with two buddies, one hates loud music, the other hates beer. Answer: meet at Burp Castle. Yes, it's true. You're only allowed to whisper, or talk with your indoor voice. If it gets too loud, you'll see the bartender shush the place like it's full of 5 year olds. Perfect place if you want to have a conversation that's not a screaming contest. The beers are so interesting. I introduced my friend to the St. Louis Framboise, it was the first time I've ever seen her finish her beer. I had the same, it's smells and tastes like raspberries. Absolutely delicious. Never thought a beer could be girly, until now. Definitely not your typical bar or pub, stop by if you're in the mood for something different. read more

This place is just great! I've been here a few times and they always had free food which we were encouraged to eat which is a big plus. The bar is very small but they have a pretty cool atmosphere with some awesome murals on the wall and a robed bartender who usually plays the part very well. Their beer selection is great, they have quite a few quality brews for you to try. One of my personal favorites is the Arrogant Bastard Ale. Definitely don't go here if you plan on getting loud as the 'whisper only' rule is strictly enforced. Always wanted to try this place. Within 5 minutes on an empty bar on a Thursday night, I wanted to leave immediately. Not because of the decor or selection of beer, but the bartender was chinsey on our pours. She poured two half full glasses for my friend and I and when we asked for a top off, she used the fill line as the limit. Ok, I understand in Belgium it's traditional for Belgiums beers, but c'mon! July second and my second good beer seal bar of the month. I am kind of starting to love the laid back, quiet atmosphere that I am finding in these good beer seal bars! We walked in and headed towards the back to a table for four, or two miniature tables for two each I should say. It is quite a tough bar to maneuver around because it's so tiny but I really expect that a bar would appreciate the importance of un-wobbly tables! Ours was definitely unbalanced and caused some sloshing around of beverage every time an arm forgetfully rested on the edge of the table. I knew I wanted to try something they had on tap and intended to ask the bartender for a suggestion but she seemed rather pre-occupied in her own conversation and I was made to feel as though I was rudely interrupting her conversation. How dare I?! Well, after a quick skim of the chalkboard, I settled on the Le Trappe Isid'or and a glass of red for my sister (it's one of the biggest disappointments in my life that I haven't been able to foster a love of beer in her). We only stayed long enough to have one drink before the rest of my party got tired and wanted to move on. I have a feeling it will be tough to get my friends to agree to return. They, of course, just want to feel at home in the typical, loud bars that serve their familiar bud light. They get a 3 for being soo strict about the noise level but a 4 for the beer selection. Combined with the wobbly tables, I decided to take them down a notch. While I like the atmosphere and the choice of offerings it has, if I am right there, I would probably just go back to Jimmy's No. 43 instead which has more space and where, although it is also quiet, does not make me scared to laugh (I have quite a...shall we say, voluminous laugh). read more

The concept of the bar is that it's a quiet bar - which is kind of nice because you don't get the murray hill douchebags and you won't get crazy large groups. This place. Awesome. I love that it's quiet! All the ridiculous complaints about it being quiet are hilarious because... THAT'S THE ENTIRE POINT. The bartender shushes you if things get to loud. It's medieval themed... the bartender wears monks robes, there are comical medival-esque paintings (it's nice to have a drink with Jesus watching over me), and Gregorian chants for background music. I have been here on a date, it's a great place to chat quietly with a special someone. A friend had his birthday party here - it was HIGH-LARIOUS to watch us WHISPER happy birthday to him. Everyone loved it. I've even brought my mom here. She's from the suburbs and doesn't like loud bars. She was also a big fan. It should be noted, for pickier drinkers like myself), that this place only has beer (a great, interesting selection), wine, and one or two fruit lambics. The bartender is awesome and knowledgeable, giving suggestions and letting patrons try whatever is on tap. My beer-lover friends were very happy. My SO and a friend from CA stopped into Burp Castle looking for a place where we could converse and enjoy a good brew. The day before we had met at the Blind Tiger Ale House and had shouted ourselves hoarse over a one hour period. There were only a few people in around 6:30 when we met up. The environment is dark, but the wall-to-wall fresco (hand painted by a Ukrainian local, at the request of the Owner, according to the bartender) is still easily viewed and enjoyed from anywhere. On warmer days, there is a small patio out front that can be enjoyed as well. Sitting at the bar, they have a list of 10-12 beers on the chalkboard, and some wines up on the rack. Arlow (sp?), the on-and-off weekend bartender, was friendly and joined us in our banter as we chatted on while enjoying a variety of beers. Samples were given freely as we tried to figure out what to have next - I imagine any time that the bar is quiet, you can sit and spend a long time just enjoying the beer, company, and quiet. The noise level will rarely exceed a level where you have to raise your voice, and when it does the bartender will quickly let out a strong but steady 'SHUSH'. This makes it beyond perfect for enjoying time with friends without having to tear your vocal chords out and replace them with a megaphone. The beer selection is mostly Belgian in origin, or Belgian style. They had a sour on tap when I visited, which was a very interesting and pleasant experience. Arlow had a lot of beer knowledge and was very personable - I look forward to seeing how the regular bartenders interact as well. Beers run from $7 to $10 as I vaguely recall, but for the quality of what you get its well worth it. Samples were given when asked, making it a bit easier to figure out what to get at any given time. Some days of the week they order fries from Pomme Frites nearby, just for everyone to snack on (a wonderful idea). There's plenty of food nearby anyways, so its hardly an issue to grab a bite, swing back to the Castle, and sit down to continue drinking. All in all, after leaving the Anthill Pub back home, its good to find another place that I feel I can call my beer-home. I'll most certainly be returning again. read more

This place is awesome. I totally didn't believe the whole "Shhhhhh" thing that people mentioned in their reviews, but yep, it's no joke. Ahhhh, so refreshing to go to a bar where one can actually carry on a conversation without ending up with a hoarse voice at the end of the night. The beer menu rocks as well. It's a cool place which seems to get packed and empty out just as quick, so not much Shhhhhing when it's empty. I like beer, and I like quiet bars. But I'm not sure if Burp Castle is my kind of spot. There are certainly good things about this place. There are some nice beers on tap that you might not find in an average bar. The place is small and relatively comfortable. They don't play dumb music really loud. When I went, there was music, but at a very low level. The quietness was good for having a nice happy hour chat with some friends. However, I was disappointed by the happy hour specials. It's a dollar off any beer, but the beers themselves are on the pricier side of things. I think a two-for-one or a deeper happy hour discount would be more attractive to me. While the beers on tap were indeed very nice, it would be good to see a wider price range to maintain affordability. The shhh-ing was just weird. There were a few groups of people in the bar, and the volume level was never loud, yet the shhhh-ing continued. I found it interrupted the conversations I was engaged in and made it awkward to keep talking (even at a low level). It felt like 2nd grade. I don't mind having a quiet bar, but I think this shhh-ing business it really just not for me. Overall, I was glad I tried it out, but I probably won't be coming back here much. read more

The greatest thing about Burp Castle is that you will never experience any moment of awkwardness. Because, if the conversation starts to lean toward a lull, you can just point to the murals on the wall and say, "Wow, do you think that monk will get eaten by that shark?" Plus, you're supposed to keep it quiet because this is a first-floor bar in a residential neighborhood, so on a regular basis the bartenders will lead everyone in a game of "ssssssh!" The power of the bartender to be able to shush people and they actually listen is amazing. Was only able to sample their great beers on tap (they were not serving bottled beer when we went). The vibe of the place almost feels like you're intruding on the bartender, but she seemed to warm up the longer we were there (or maybe it was the beer). The fact that we could sit there on a Friday night and have a conversation over a couple of beers was what makes me give this place 5 stars (that and the great beer). I usually love Burp Castle. I love the selection of beers. I love the ugly murals on the wall. I love the idea of a quiet bar that respects beer and good conversation. I love the shushing. I usually love all these things about Burp Castle. But Burp Castle is losing some stars. Mostly because the last time I was there, instead of having a really helpful, cheerful, and knowledgeable bartender, there was a pompous, self-congratulatory bartender that could hardly be pried away from his conversation about how he thinks Camus is a little bit existential (did you take freshman lit?) to pour us a drink. And the bathrooms smell like a horse stable. Worse than the bathrooms at Cheap Shots. I'm not going to say I'm not going to come back here, because I know I will, but I'm a little disappointed about the way it's changed. read more

This amazing Beligian beer bar always has new imported choices and the cozy, monastery-like atmosphere makes it stand out from other bars. Another defining characteristic is the fact that the bartender may or may not be wearing monks' robes while he shushes you for talking above a reasonable volume. This place makes you want to taste some quality brewed beverages, curl up next to the wooden panels and monk mosaics on the wall and read a good book - not that I've actually done there, but I'd like to. Only in New York can you find a tiny hole-in-the-wall beer bar covered in hilarious murals that doesn't let the noise level go higher than a dull murmur. The place is very obscure, I almost walked right past it when I was looking for it. I met a friend here to talk, and let me just say, it was a great place for that. Every so often the bar is "shushed" to keep the noise level down and keep the place feeling nice and intimate. Almost like a library, I would say. I was taken aback by the shushing at first, but came to appreciate it as the night wore on. The place is super tiny and covered in intricate murals and wood paneling. When I was here it seemed like a lot of dates and many people walked in and right out when they realized there wasnt much space to hang out in. The beer list is great and ranges from $6 to $11. While I usually like cheaper drinks, its not bad for the selection. I tasted the banana bread beer and was shocked when it really tasted like banana bread! I guess we assumed the name 'Burp Castle' implied it was a dumpy bro hangout but we couldn't be more wrong. We opened the door and immediately picked up on the hushed whisper voices.
