I love stopping in here for a well made, quick burrito. It's not going to be fancy, (or particularly authentic) but for a fast lunch that hits the spot I am all for it. They have great daily specials, make an acceptable breakfast burrito, have great portions, and their staff is super friendly! I ordered two breakfast burritos for me and my buddy. After making one they discovered they only had enough ingredients to make one apparently. Instead of cooking up more food, they told me they could make a lunch burrito for him. I didn't want that because it was morning time and lunch did not sound appetizing. The breakfast burrito was cold and had no flavor. It was overpriced. I couldn't even finish the burrito. Can't say how the lunch food is and won't be returning to find out. A burrito place in the Pearl. When someone said to me "Have you tried that new burrito place in the Pearl?", I instantly disregarded. It's a burrito place.... in the Pearl. THE PEARL, for gods sake. If there's any place that a burrito place shouldn't be, it would be the Pearl. Don't get me wrong, I like having burrito places within reach at all times but the Pearl is a place where a burrito place either a. won't do well, or b. will suck. The good burrito spots won't do well because they're too "dirty" and the bad ones... well... This is the type of burrito places that Lebron or Kanye or Ke$ha eats at. They wanna get some authentic $outh of the border eats, so they head on over to some place below million dollar condos. When you walk in, you're greeted by some phat beats blastin' through their sound system and by a nice man who speaks better English than I do. This is a huge red flag. I want an excuse to practice my spanish, not a lesson on the oxford comma. Half expecting to be surprised by a smoke machine or a DJ repeatedly playing a siren sample, I reluctantly place my order. I ordered the Trail Blazer (sorry Lebron). It like it would be "interesting", with mango salsa, spicy chicken and some other things, but the only interesting thing about it was the fact that wasn't very good. So what I'm really saying is that it wasn't really interesting at all, just bad. It was bland, the chicken was dry, and it was way too expensive for Mexican food. 4 days into my trip to Portland and I hadn't gone to one place I didn't end up enjoying, that is until I got to Burrito Bar. Day 3 I saw Burrito Bar and remembered reading all the great reviews about it and I was excited to try a burrito with their sweet bbq sauce, especially since everyone says its similar to Chipotle. On Day 3 it was 7:30 at night, and they don't close till 8. I was standing out front with my girlfriend and we were discussing for a short time if we wanted to try it that night or wait, she said lets do it. As we turned around to enter, one of the guys that worked there.. locked the door. He saw us about to come in and he locked the door. Really......? So we were obviously upset and went to Hot Lips Pizza instead, and they were friendly and not shitty. Day 4 after coming back from a long adventure all across Portland, we passed by there again since it's just a few blocks from our hotel. We decided we'd give them one last chance. Got there at 4:30, all doors were locked and no one was to be seen inside... Really? We knew they were open cause their LED Open sign was on and once again they close at 8pm. We waited outside a few minutes while deciding where to go to eat instead. As we were talking, someone came and unlocked the door. Finally.. so since we were already there.. decided to give it a go, wish we didn't though. First off the guy that works there was the grumpiest most unwelcoming person ever. Like he was pissed off that we were there, like he had been trying to keep us out the entire time and we somehow slipped through his defenses. Asked the guy one question, which meat he thought would go best with the bbq sauce. His response, "I don't know boss, whatever you want." Really man? Like at least recommend me what people normally get with it or something. I've never been there, help me out. So I got my burrito, sweet and spicy chicken, refried beans, bbq sauce, lettuce, cilantro rice, and mangoes. It sounds amazing, but it wasn't even close to being decent. Beans looked like they'd be sitting there for years and the meat was super dry and tasteless. Was neither sweet nor spicy, so why go as far as advertising it as both???? I hate that people compare this place to Chipotle, it's not even close. Also the Caribbean influence? People say it's like if Chipotle was in Hawaii? What? The only reason I can think of why people say that is because they have mangoes on the menu. That's it. This place isn't even worth going to. If you want something like Chipotle, there is literally a Chipotle a few blocks away. There are also a lot of really nice local restaurants to try if you are a tourist, go elsewhere. While I've gone a lot less, I noticed the service improved--especially during the crucial lunch time. Updating this reviewing. Still a good place to go to in lieu of Chipotle's. Bravo to the BB, they somehow elbowed and clawed and scraped their way into a very crowded, uber-trendy burrito/wrap market. From Moe's SW Grill to Pita Pit to Rice Junkies to Chipotle and on to QDoba, to virtually every corner or strip mall that can accommodate a taco-truck or Mexi-Cali eatery, if you can't get your burrito fix in Portland nowadays, you just ain't lookin' hard enough! Burrito Bar somehow manages to stay relevant in the afore-mentioned, jam-packed Burrito eatery wars. Unlike much of the competition, there is alcohol available @ BB, so there is that as an enticement. But BB closes @ 2100 every night--- very un- bar-like behavior! As the recent talk thread demonstrates, burritos are one of Almighty God's bestest tools for soaking up booze and helping to cure and possibly even prevent hangovers. BB could--and really should-- be offering burritos and booze well into the wee hours, every night. The better to maintain cosmic balance and order, between hangover hell, and a blissful, productive workforce. This could be huge business for you, BB, I can only hope you're paying attention! The other minor complaint (but not that petty), is size. Dangit, I want to be properly ashamed of myself, being seen in public w/the size of my burritos. ¿Lo entienden, mis pequeños chinchillas? I can't complain at all about the quality and taste of everything I've tried there, I love the Caribbean infusion (Just like with humans, it's the Jerks that get all the attention and approval from the babes. WTF is up with that, anyways?). Finally, of course I love that you put Traegers to good, proper use and abuse in your bid-ness. But for the prices you command, there are bigger, badder burritos around town. Final point, and it's kind of a downer--- I have a co-worker that turned me on to BB, and sometimes the little sweetheart even brings bags o' burritos to work w/her, to spread good cheer and help in the fight for middle age spread, and dyspepsia. But each of the last 2 or 3 times she's brought the burritos, you guys were all outta guac! This is an outrage that cannot stand! As they say in the Corp, "Once is a fluke, twice is a coincidence, third time: it's a conspiracy...." Get it together, Burrito Bar, for all our sakes! And please if you'll just consider hiring more staff to stay open til 0200-ish, or better yet, 0300, to attract the many people being unhappily turned out of the bars for the night, while they're still not thinking clearly. Dried-out rice at 12:30 on a weekday? WTF? In the middle of the lunch rush, all of the rice bins looked like they'd been sitting out for hours and hours. I didn't have the time to find somewhere else to eat for lunch, so i got a burrito anyway. The construction was sub-par, with toppings just slapped in such that i ended up with sour cream in the top half of my burrito and guacamole in the bottom half. And yes, the rice was dried out and even a bit crunchy. There was a peculiar, almost chemical-y taste to my burrito as well. About the only good thing about this place is that their salsa was pretty good. Maybe a bonus point for having a burrito size available that's smaller than a human head, for people who aren't on the 10,000 calorie/day diet. With Fuego just a few blocks away, i don't know why i'd ever eat at Burrito Bar again. All those fancy burrito options on the menu don't matter when the ingredients are sub-par and stale. read more

First, let me say that I try not to throw around 5 stars. Here's why I gave Burrito Bar 5 stars, though it didn't knock my socks off. It was solid and a good value. 1. Clean and Welcoming Restaurant 2. Friendly Staff 3. Good Food 4. Good Price 5. Nothing Bad about the experience I was hungry across the street at the post office so I decided to stop in because the restaurant looked welcoming as I drove past. It's easy to find parking around there, though you have to feed the meter. The restaurant is clean and the decor is comfortable and welcoming. I had never been there so the woman behind the counter walked me through it making sure I knew all my options. Their setup is similar to Chipotle, you walk along the bar with the employee as they build your entree choosing the meat, salsa, toppings, etc. I chose a chipotle ranch salad with sweet and spicy chicken. It was the daily special apparently, so I got the salad and drink for $6.75! The chicken was good and spoke to their Caribbean themed menu with a little spicy kick. You can customize the salad however you like, I chose: Romaine, black beans, corn salsa, pico de gallo, shredded cheese, and chipotle ranch dressing. The drink was a self serve soda with free refills. I chose a comfy seat by the window and was pleased with the entire experience. I would go back for sure! read more

Ignore the bad reviews. This place rocks. Economical, fast, and high quality. The meats are abundant and delicious. Lots of these reviews seem written by Portland "foodies" whom only gouge and don't cook. (Why would you ever find validity in someone's opinion about food who doesn't cook?) I had listened to the collective and ditched this place for its 3.5 stars, I'd be a sad guy. This place is fantastic. The staff is a family and they are incredibly kind. They let me sample their meats, and the pork was out of this world. Everything has a Jamaican twist and is moist and fresh tasting. And finally, a burrito bar with refried beans. Praise the burrito gods. I crafted a burrito with pork, refried, sour cream, pineapple salsa, Jamaican jerk sauce, cilantro, and cheese, - it was one my top 5 burritos ever. Kicks the hell out of cafe rio, baja fresh, chipoltle, everything. Clean joint, excellent staff, and fresh food. Don't be fooled by the excellent branding btw, it's not a franchise. All local. I haven't written a review on Yelp before, but I had to break the silence with my experience at Burrito Bar. I would probably rate the food itself as 3.5-4 stars - it was tasty enough, but the rice and beans were crusty, and the guacamole was watery. However, the service is where I ran into the real problem. Besides the servers being very slow (think more than half the speed of chipotle), the cashier was incredibly condescending once I showed her my voucher from Groupon. I purchased a Groupon for 3 burritos/bowls and 3 drinks, and visited the restaurant previously to redeem the voucher. The owner of the store marked the Groupon as redeemed and gave me a paper voucher to be hole punched each time I redeemed one of the meals. However, all of the employees seemed to have never seen the voucher when I came in the second time. The cashier called on the help of other employees, who treated me like I was trying to scam them. The cashier then tried to insist that the Groupon was for one burrito/bowl and one drink after 3 visits to Burrito Bar. Another employee went to the back to speak with the manager, and then tried to offer 50% off my meal. Having paid the full price of the Groupon ($19), I was annoyed by his refusal to honor the full extent of the Groupon. I pulled up my Groupon app and showed him the voucher, which stated, "Punch card for three burritos or bowls and three drinks." The manager then came out and said he would honor the voucher, but quizzed me on how many meals I had left. I understand that I'm probably one of few who purchased this Groupon and that the crew rarely sees it, but there should have been far more oversight to how it would roll out. All in all, an embarrassing and uncomfortable experience, where I was treated like a burrito-snatching thief. If the restaurant stood alone without a crew, I would probably come back, but otherwise, give me my Chipotle! read more

This place is what chipotle wants to be but fails miserably. The chicken is great and makes the end trails chipotle serves look like animal feed. And, there's the toppings: the jerk sauce is the specialty and my favorite. I tried this place for the first time last night, and since it located right across the street from the Bar Method, its hard to walk by and not stop after a rigorous class. With my gluten allergy, its nice to find a place where I can get decent food with options. There is always the Chipotle comparison, but I have to say I feel this place has more options and while the food isn't off the charts amazing, it is still tasty and affordable and better then what I could make at home. And, again with my gluten issue, I know everything in here is safe, whereas if I was at that other place, I have to ask them to take special steps and I have my doubts about certain items. Once known as Taco del Mar, now The Burrito Bar has tasty and quick meals for the taking. There's a special every day of the week and the portions are more than adequate for the $. When the change from Taco del Mar to The Burrito Bar the owner and staff have remained but the food seems to have gotten better! The owner told us right after the change that they slow cook fresh meat, rather than having it shipped in pre-cooked. The spicy chicken is the best, not spicy as in hot but spicy with a burst of flavor from Caribbean! I was going to grab Chipotle for lunch again, like usual, but then I saw this place on Yelp. It was great! The guy working there provided awesome service - I told him it was my first time there, and he explained all the options and ingredients to me. I mentioned Chipotle, and he proceeded to tell me that while Chiptole gets all their food in frozen on a truck, Burrito Bar goes and buys all of their food locally every 2 days. I got the bowl to go, and loaded it up to the very top with Cilantro Rice, Black Beans, Spicy Chicken, Chipotle sauce, Queso, Medium salsa, pineapple, romaine, and cheese. The service from the guys are great! Very friendly! The service from the woman...not so much. I am usually very happy with the portion of my meal when I go there. This time around, I felt like I had to ask her for extra rice, salsa, lettuce, etc on my entree because the initial scoop was very small! Then she notified me that if I want extra of anything then it'll cost extra?!?? I've been here for lunch PLENTY of times and this is the first time that I was very unhappy with the way my meal was put together. I've NEVER had to ask the guys to add extra of anything when they make my order. I am not one to try and milk it and get free extras - but the portion I was given by the woman was drastically small compared to the last 10+ times I've eaten there. The food and salsa are pretty good and the veggies are fresh each time I go. I will return for lunch because the guys there are very personable and do give you great service. If I run into this incident more times then I would like then I'll just walk the extra 4-5 blocks to Chipotle. read more

The service was fine - must not have been the grumpy people I read about in other reviews. I'd say the price point is a little high compared to more authentic places around town. For some reason sour cream must be a super hot commodity because they barely swipe any on. We got burritos. They were nothing special, but they were okay. If you like to build your own then this place is a plus in that regard. I sampled the chicken and really liked the BBQ style, but by the time you add everything else it really didn't make much difference. My friend was not impressed and thought everything was a little colder than it should be and pretty bland. I thought mine was okay, but I added guacamole, which did make a huge difference in flavor, although $1.50 seemed a bit much as an add-on. Basically it's just okay food. read more
