Stopping at SOTB is always a good idea when traveling up north or down south. The hot dogs was exactly what we needed after driving for about 6 hours. Clean & the staff was friendly. Dine in or carry out. No bathrooms for public use.

Looks are deceiving with this one. Tacky and over the top is what you see when you pull up. Tourist trap. Though they where understaffed like really bad, I waited it out because I noticed a lot of people were there with me. That was telling me to hold out because if this many people are waiting with this bad of a back up, it must be pretty good. looking around, the placed is dated but remarkably clean! Almost sure you could eat off any surface.Sure enough, the food was great! Don't know if it was worth the 30 Minute wait for fast food but, was tasty!

I have zero complaints. They made everything fresh to order, which was piping hot when I got it. U do need to wait, n most tables r closed due to pandemic precautions. The food is fabulous. This is my new favorite place to stop at whenever I'm passing through. All the workers are so polite n friendly. I make it a point to return the courtesy. I usually order a bunch of stuff: tacos, tamales, burgers, n fries for Dad. I also get drinks. They have lots of stuff; everything from gravy & biscuits to grits, breakfast foods, typical American fast foods, n all kinds of Mexican stuff. It's so delicious!

Hot Tamale is open 24 hours and offers a number of food items for a very low price; between $1.50 - $3.50 for most of the items. The tamales, tacos, and cheese burgers actually have a decent flavor and I would recommend ordering them if you make your way here. I do not recommend the fries or nachos. The fries may come with a decent amount in one order, but they have a stale flavor. The nachos are low quality with cheese that is more liquidy than normal and a below average flavor. The atmosphere is divey and spacious. The staff members are nice and quick to serve.

    Always a line here.

For a 24-hour South of The Border restaurant, this location was surprisingly average in terms of food portions, taste, quality, and overall service. Even though I had an appetite for Mexican food upon arrival, that quickly changed by looking at the overall presentation from the orders that I saw come out- bland & somewhat undercooked. So, I changed my choices from Mexican to plain ol' American foot long hot dogs with fries & a drink ($10.00). For all of that, I thought that it was so-so, and nothing spectacular. Couple that by having to walk nearly a half of a block to the bathroom (bathrooms are not in this building), and you have an eating experience that is just not very memorable. I will say that this location is quite clean. Employees seem to be really up to cleaning up after folks that happened to eat like animals in here after traveling from wherever to stop & see the SOB attractions. However, the employees at the front just seemed to be disinterested in wanting to serve me on this visit. I've had better service at a McDonald's than here, which is just sad. Oh well. Altogether, you'll get a decent meal here, but don't have high expectations. In my opinion, the food is just a bit overpriced from what it offers.

The experience is something else.... The adds had me excited to come here only to find myself with a mouth full of salt. So much salt in the food.

This is probably my last time eating here. They've started up charging for everything they can. Relish upcharge, mustard upcharge, I'm really surprised they didn't charge me for ketchup. I only got a hotdog the bun was stale and hot dog appeared to be left in the hot hold past temp. Server was rude from the start I was making sure I understood the specials posted, after I suggested she not be so rude. She became extremely rude to my son when he asked about the stickers that cost $.10 or $.25 depending on size. He just wanted to know if he has to pay tax or is that the final price.

We got 4 tacos. And a lemonade and a sweet tea for $13. It's a fun quirky town . It was quiet when we came. It's an are off route 95 called South of the Border. Very flashy. We need food so ... we stopped here. South Carolina style !!

Pedro says it is chili today, hot tamales.

It's South of the Border so everything screams 50's roadside attraction and it is! BUT, Hot Tamale was surprisingly good and great prices! The beef taco was great as was the beef Tamale. Nachos were boring and ordinary C-store quality but for the price would stop for tacos and tamales again.

    Menu

Low prices, good tacos. While the service is somewhat slow, and big crowds of strange people come through, the tacos and tamales are surprisingly good. At least for a fast food carry out place. The restaurant could use a restroom for its patrons. Going to the big one across the parking lot (which is disgusting) isn't a big deal (besides the fact that it's disgusting), but would be nice to have a cleaner spot at the restaurant.

The only thing disappointing about Hot Tamales are the Yelp reviews. This is essentially a 24-hour fast food joint that offers up burgers, fries, hot dogs, breakfast and some "Mexican" food. And by Mexican, I mean tacos, tamales and chili-covered nachos. It's nothing fancy, but if you're walking in expecting some amazing new-age Mexican eatery, then shame on you, Yelpers. In case you forgot that damn quickly, you're at South of the Border in South Carolina. Too see people review this place as if they're expecting some culinary miracle to occur is hard to digest. It is easy to see why some people who don't Yelp view us as nit-picking food snobs. La Chica and I rolled up in here around 11 PM after checking in at the motor lodge across the street. I ordered a Bud Light, a bacon, egg & cheese biscuit and some chili cheese fries. All of my food was great. The biscuit was soft and had a great buttermilk taste, the eggs were cooked perfectly and the bacon was crunchy. The chili cheese fries were on point too. Lots of hot dog type chili (nothing homemade for sure), sour cream and fresh crispy fries. La Chica's order was similar to mine and our total bill was $16 and some change. Everything was made to order. I left stuffed and my wallet was happy.

Please take off that this place serves Mexican food, that is deceiving. With all due respect this place should be shut down or something. Not only does this place claim to sell Mexican food, the also say they serve Luzianne tea but they don't. I know my teas and though I don't mind Lipton Luzianne is an upgrade. You can buy the same $1.95 "tacos" at taco bell for a dollar. I guess I'm use to Miami.. The people working here are like zombies. Not friendly at all Ooh! And no free refills?! Also they lied to my face about the tea!! And their nachos, I'll post a pic you be the judge. Stingy with the meat on their tacos, don't use cilantro. "South of the border looks lovely, but it's not. The only highlight was the gas station, the woman on shift that day was actually friendly. At night time this place (South of the Border) has a beautiful display, and it's just so deceiving, it broke my heart visiting.

Agree the service was with attitude but our food was fine. Double cheese, chili fries, spicy fries, chicken tenders all pretty good.

Corn bread, and slices of cake ( red velvet, carrot, lemon, chocolate , are in a separate area.) I had a piece of the baked and the fried chicken. Both were salty, dried out tough, even though the place only opened 40 minutes before I got there. I liked the cornbread and the sweet potato. I chose this place based on its high yelp rating , leaving the interstate . It's the first time yelp failed me.

Southern Fried Restaurant & Catering - I guess this is why most of these places are condemned. It was sad to see what was clearly once a vibrant little town.

I remember when this used to be the Sanitary Cafe and Harry ran the place. He had a small display case with some of his old military stuff in it from when he was in World War 2. I was happy to see the stainless steel wall cover still there behind the counter. I met a friend of mine for lunch on my way to Myrtle Beach. We've been friends since 3rd Grade ! I had the Country Ham Plate with Mac-n-Cheese , Mashed Potatoes and Gravy , Roll , and Sweet Tea. He had the Patty Melt with Fries. I love getting Country Ham when I come home to visit because we can't get it in Las Vegas. It was good , but I have to say the portion was a little smaller than I expected. The Mashed Potatoes and Gravy was good , but the Mac-n-Cheese I didn't really care for. Sweet Tea was on point. My friend liked his Patty Melt and fries. He knew our waitress and she was nice enough to take a picture of us. Bennettsville is still the small town community that I remember and grew up in. I would love to see it grow again like many places have even though all the jobs moved away years ago when the factories moved overseas. My father and I walked the streets of Bennettsville everyday after he got off work and we visited many of the shopkeepers after his first heart attack to give him some exercise. He grew up in Bennettsville and never moved as many of the people that he grew up with. Bennettsville was a tight knit community then and I know the ones that I grew up with still have this place in their heart even being thousands of miles away like me.

The burger came with onions, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, and banana peppers with your choice of cheddar or provolone cheese. As you can see, I chose cheddar, and I added bacon. The burger had one small strip of bacon, about two small pieces of banana pepper, and about two small round pickles; it was a bit disappointing because they skimped on those toppings for the size of the burger. Overall, the burger was okay. The fries were like crispy fries. I did like that they were hot. I noticed something was on the plate near the fries, so I didn't eat many after that. I honestly was starving, so I was grateful for the little bit I did eat, but yeah, it was not as pleasing as I would have hoped for in a meal here.
