As a former restaurant professional, I had high hopes for Burton's, unfortunately I was greatly disappointed. The hostess was pleasant, and we were shown to our table almost to the minute of our reservation. The booth was set for four, and we were only two. The host explained the "scratch kitchen" concept and left... leaving the two extra place settings. Waitress came and went, and still the places swttings remained. So I stacked them on the edge of the table. Apps came and were eaten, and now those dirty dishes remained on the edge of the table while our waitress, the bus boys, and what I perceived as a manager, passed by many times. Finally a waiter from a different area was walking by and took the dirty dishes. Of course he left the two extra, stacked on the edge, place settings. I am not interested in naming the server, it was 6pm on Sat. night, but it was apparent a little more training was warranted. Now for the food: The Philly Cheese Steak spring rolls were ok... but they tasted like subs. So many promising adaptations could be made, yet the steak and provolone made for a pedestrian offering in a eatery whose prices promise excellence. However they were cooked very well, non greasy and cheese melted to perfection. Land and Sea (aka Surf and Turf). A crab cake that was a little loose in consistency and mediocre in taste. And a fillet mignon that was OUTSTANDING. One of the best I have ever had. Shrimp Scampi. High price, low on taste. The shrimp were overcooked to the point of rubberiness. Whole dish bathed in ground cheese. This was a huge let down as it is a standard coastal dish, and one every saute cook has to be able to cook in his sleep. In short, as a cook, I don't feel this place justifies it's pricing.... Except for the Filet.... if you have to go... get the filet. read more

First time dining here and will be back! The gluten free menu was HUGE and so well laid out. Everything my fiance dined on came on a square plate, and the foccacia bread with herbed butter was warm and tasty. Our server Elaine recommended wine for us, walked us through how Burtons handles allergies, and was patient and attentive with us. We took some time to order, as everything sounded so good, and she allowed us ample time for our decisions. Food was amazing, everything we ordered was fresh tasting. RISOTTO IS AWESOME HERE. The manager even passed by to assure us about the allergy procedure which was a great touch. Even the desserts were delicious, and many gluten free options there as well. My husband and I moved out of state a few years ago, so whenever we come come home, Burtons is always one of our first stops. We always come here because while the prices are a high, the service, food and overall quality are consistently good. Last night, we went with my father and my husbands mother. Our drinks were good, the service was as always good and efficient, but it must have been an off night in the kitchen... : ( My father and husband both ordered the New York strip. Neither were seasoned very well, and my husbands was pretty overcooked. Very much a bummer considering the price, and the onion rings were pretty soggy too. My mother in law hadn't been to Burtons in years, she wanted something simple - so all of us immediately recommended the Burtons burger because it's always sooooo good! Her burger came out looking like a kids burger... Finally I got the Burtons Imperial. The fish was cooked okay, but the blue crab stuffing was super dry and flavorless. Close to $200 later we were left wondering why the heck we even came. Hopefully it was just what I had mentioned earlier - an off night. read more

Arrived at 6 on a Friday evening to a packed house with a 90 minute wait forecast. Told reservations were accepted even for party of two. Rare. Duly noted. My wife and I visited Burtons Grill on her birthday one Monday afternoon and we were shocked to see the crowd that was on hand at 2:00. The general manger, Steve, is truly a professional and our waitress, Danielle, was over the top! Our lunch was great and their kindness to show my wife a nice time on her birthday was very appreciative! She had the salmon which was perfectly cooked and served with her choice of sides of broccoli and a cucumber salad. I had the chicken sandwich and cole slaw, which again was perfect and to die for. How can a restaurant accept a reservation for 6 people, then turn you away when you arrive 10 minutes early with the lame excuse the person taking the reservation made a mistake and made it for 4 people! Burton's has become me and my husbands go to place when we want a casual delicious dinner. We usually try and make a reservation as you will have a wait if you don't. Restaurant is cozy and staff is super friendly. I love how there is always new specials and they tell you the special prices after the descriptions. It being Lent and not eating much meat we were looking forward to a good burger, my husband usually has it here and raves it is his FAVORITE burger ever. I typically go for the Mediterranean Chicken or Shrimp Feta Pasta..but feeling like beef I went ahead for the burger, boy was I glad I did! The burger was perfectly cooked as when I ordered they even made sure I was okay with the red inside etc. Meat is not greasy nor are the onion strips, lettuce and tomato were fresh and the homemade Burton's sauce (almost like a Big Mac sauce) is so good! The fries were hot and crispy as well. I just needed to share my love with Burton's here so you can fall in love with it as well. We have been here in the past but feel that they really have improved over the years. Just recently we went there as a family. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and meals. My child that hates broccolli really love their broccolli. Service is ok...we had to wait a little for our check. Not so long ago I went there with a couple of lady friends, the servcer spilled a drink on me and the fire alarm went off while we were eating. They really did everything they can to apologize, brought me a new drink and soda water/napkins to clean up. They took the drink off the bill and offered us free desserts due to the fire alarm. They did everything in their power to make sure that people know how sorry they are. And that's why I chose to come back. read more

Scallops were pictured, and although they are not listed on the menu I was able to order it. They had the nerve to charge $18.95 for the salad - chopped cucumber, olives, tomatoes, peppers and feta - and 3 scallops! The scallops were gritty but otherwise tasteless. The restaurant was packed today (MLK Day) for lunch, but despite that, my girlfriend and I were seated within 2 minutes. Despite being a full house, they still made sure to give us a table of empty space between us and the next group of guests, and it felt like a very private experience. The staff was very kind and accommodating. The bread and butter were delicious, and the cheeseburger that I ordered was great. The butternut squash on the side was a nice healthy alternative to french fries. The "soup of the day" that my girlfriend ordered was delicious as well. Although we didn't order a lot, nor did we order any alcohol, we were treated like any other potentially more lucrative guests at the restaurant, and that was greatly appreciated. Burton's has very much a "Pleasant-ville" feel coupled with a chain restaurant decor. It's not bad but also not great considering the prices they are charging. Hingham does not have too many good restaurants, thus making this a very popular choice for locals on the weekends (it's typically packed). The bar staff is rude, servers and hosts however are very polite and do a great job, and management does a good job too. We once had problem with the food and management was quick to respond. I'd recommend this place to anyone who'll be in the Derby Street area and doesnt feel like driving too far. If the menu selection were more modestly priced, I'd have given Burtons 4 stars. read more

This is hands down one of my favorite spots on the south shore. I've probably tried about half the menu and have never been disappointed. Apps, entrees, desserts, drinks-- all amazing. Burton's is a scratch kitchen and uses local produce wherever possible. Everything down to the condiments and juices for drinks are freshly made. I'm not a foodie by any means, but i LOVE fresh food and will gladly pay a little more for it. This is my favorite restaurant. Actually, it's my whole family's favorite restaurant. Massive gluten free menu. Wonderful wine list. Beautiful kids menu--not a bunch of greasy junk, but REAL food for the littles!! Great food safety/cross contamination (for GF) protocols. I had made reservations for dinner for my fiance's bday...just two of us on a Tuesday night. When we arrived we waited 10 minutes for our table. The food was not that great. We got the dry-rub wings which were super duper salty. I got the steak frites with parmesan truffle fries, all of which were luke warm and there was this cheese sauce for the steak that was just terrible tasting. He got the salmon...it was 1/2 burnt so he only ate half. The waitress was just missing in action...a runner brought our food out and my fiance had ran out of cider at least five minutes before and waited a few more minutes before she came over and handed me a steak knife (I had been struggling with the butter knife) and took his second drink order. The only reason they got any stars was the desert....but it's not worth going there just for a chocolate torte....avoid if you can. read more

Well intentioned staff could use better training. Following a full glass beer spill into the lap of my lunch partner, things were partially mopped up by our very apologetic server using our napkins. A second staff person brought us a small stack of cocktail napkins which we were left with to finish cleaning up the table and chair ourselves. At least they took away the wet napkin items! Our napkin and small plate set ups were never replaced so we stole some off the nearby table. Eventually a third person approached with a dry cleaning offer if we brought the receipt in. As we drove over an hour to shop at Derby Street we laughed that off. Restaurant spillage is fairly common so we would recommend better rescue operations in place. This is my favorite place to eat at the Derby Street Shoppes. The atmosphere is great, the service if one of a kind and the food is exceptional! If you have any allergies or gluten free intolerance, the staff at Burtons Grill will go out of their way to accomodate. Their vegetarian and gluten free options are SOOOO delicious! I just moved down to the South Shore from Cambridge a cpl months ago and have been disappointed with the quality of restaurants here so far. Went to burton's last weekend with my girlfriend and must say that I was pleasantly impressed. I ordered the filet mignon and crabcake and thought both were great. The filet was the best steak I've had in a long time - prob only matched by some more expensive NYC steakhouses. My gf ordered the ny strip and was satisfied - not as good as the filet but I guess that's to be expected. The only issue that I have is the time it took to receive our food. We were waiting for over 45 min for our appetizer and like another 30 min for our main meal, but it was worth it in the end. read more

The food is always hot and prepared just right. The manager is always present walking around and checking on the customers. The different specials every night give you many more options. Still enjoy dining here, but so disappointed in the fish tacos. Cold tortillas?!!? Warming them takes minimal effort (ideally they'd be grilled, but no excuse for cold). And they're also too thick - the tortilla overwhelms the fish so much so that I ended up eating the fish alone (no longer a taco). And finally, the tacos are flavorless - how about adding jalapeño or a chipotle sour crema? I am THRILLED they finally got rid of the Disneyesque abstract wall treatment above the wainscoting - I could never understand it.
