Based on my recent experience at this practice, I will not be returning. My primary complaint is the poor administration of the practice. Dr. Gruen had written two prescriptions for me and mentioned a referral to another physician. I had to ask for all three at the front desk where the staff seemed reluctant to go to any extra effort. One of the prescriptions was to be called in at the pharmacy near my home; this never happened. In addition, I learned belatedly that Dr. Gruen works at more than one practice. When I called what I thought was the Upper East Side office I was told they had no record of me or my appointment--and did not explain that I might have reached the wrong location. Finally, I was billed for a sum that was not covered by my insurance, but instead of calling me to inform me that it was overdue, the practice charged my credit card directly. (Apparently permission for them to do this is in the "fine print" form that you sign when you come in for your first appointment.) read more

As a physician myself, I think I am a pretty good judge of other doctors. With that in mind, I highly and unconditionally can recommend Dr. Buscemi. Not only is she extremely nice, but she is extremely knowledgeable and furthermore, is an outstanding surgeon. She was able to diagnose and help me with a problem that no one else was capable of solving! The best in all the land. I have been coming here (to the older UES office too) on and off since 2007. tl;dr: Dr. Buscemi saved my skin. The office is well-appointed (I prefer places with less of a hospital feel and more of a spa feel). The receptionists and PAs are hardworking and nice. Appointments start on time, and I have never felt rushed. I have not been here for anything cosmetic, only medical dermatology, e.g. skin cancer screenings, but I have no doubt those services would be expertly done as well. read more

A minus Star. Prospective & current patients be aware. I've been under the care of Dr. Buscemi for several years. I have adult Inflammatory Cystic Acne that requires cortisone shots often, very often. I live near her office & with her permission, the staff accommodated me on a dime to inject & reduce them & if possible, drain the painful cysts. She always told me the sooner they're injected, the better. Suddenly at my last appointment about a month ago, she had a melt down.The moment she came in to the exam room & I said hi, how are you, she said "not good" & began complaining about her staff & "no matter how hard she tries, she's not getting it right & that she felt like quitting". Quitting? This is her practice that she owns. I did not mishear or misunderstand. I don't know what the "it" was that she couldn't get right. She then injected my cysts & extracted several whiteheads. After that, she complained that she should be doing surgery & not spending time with acne extractions & injections. Dr. Buscemi then advised that I go to an aesthetician. I was shocked. It took several minutes for me to absorb that. I said I don't think an aesthetician could inject cortisone. She nodded her head in agreement & said nothing else & just silently walked out of the exam room. An AESTHETICIAN? Glorified facialists with fragrant white steamy scented towels infecting my acne cysts by squeezing them out & then massaging in moisturizers followed by their sales pitch to sell me products for my Inflammatory Cystic Acne?! Huh? I don't think so! She's supposed to be a board certified dermatologist? She's not a surgeon nor does she even do Moh's "surgery" or have up-to-date appropriate dermatologic lasers. It took a month for me to wrap my head around this experience. In all the time I was under her care, not once did she do a blood test to see if there was a medical underlying reason for my sudden & unforgiving acne that I never experienced when I was younger! No wonder I never improved. I now feel she is unqualified, plain disinterested or both. My advice is to stay far away from that office. Do not think you can trust this Doctor. In my opinion, I think she's right about one thing. She should quit. She should do us all a favor & sell her practice & stay away from practicing medicine. I now question myself. Why didn't I go for a 2nd opinion? I'm obviously a dope because I liked her. Find a Board Certified Dermatologist that still enjoys their work AND ISN'T BURNED OUT! The doctor's care was fine. The office was fine. The staff however, is not fine. I made an appointment on ZocDoc for an annual skin screening and received a call from a woman in the office informing me that I had an outstanding bill... from over a year ago. When I told the woman I didn't receive a statement (my mail service is unreliable and I moved after my visit), she said: 'let me AX you a question. When you called to make an appointment, didn't nobody tell you that you had an outstanding balance?' To that woman, I say this: First of all, it takes .2 seconds to see that I made my appointment on ZocDoc. Second, I'm STILL cringing at your use of the English language. And third, no patient deserves to be treated as though they are trying to skimp out on paying the bill. A little sensitivity goes along way. To anyone seeking a doctor, I say this: Find comparable care elsewhere. I'd rather sip hot mayonnaise through a straw than to ever speak to anyone in that office again. read more

All the other reviews documenting the appallingly long wait times to see Dr. Buscemi and the cold treatment of patients by staff are 100% true. You can feel it when you walk into the office. The receptionists can't even be bothered to greet you or look you in the eye. They stuck me in an examination room where I waited for over 20 minutes to see the doc, after waiting in the lobby for some time (so much for my one-hour lunch break). When Dr. Buscemi did finally arrive, she was pleasant enough and answered my questions to a degree that I was satisfied with. What I didn't appreciate was her eyebrow raising and tone of voice when I told her I had tried to treat my skin condition myself at home before coming to her -- her condescending attitude did nothing to educate me or relieve any worry I may have had about it. Our whole interaction probably took no longer than 7 minutes. Her assistant was incredibly rude. I literally had to ask her "so do I just leave now?" after she told me the same thing the doc did and exited herself. Again, the receptionist was of no help when I asked how I would be made aware of my prescription's status. She told me I could call the pharmacy myself and then went back to her work. TLDR; I regret wasting my time here and will not bother to follow up with this doc. I highly recommend looking elsewhere. read more

Just had my first visit with Dr. Gruen in Dr. Buscemi's practice and I was not impressed. The office itself was clean and nice, and the office staff was very efficient. That being said, I'm not planning on going back. They kept me waiting in the lobby and subsequently in the exam room for over an hour. OVER an hour!!! And when I finally was seen by the doctor and mentioned that she started chattering away about how everyone wants to tell her their life story. So we cut to the chase, and she later recommended something that I didn't want to do because of my medical history which she had never asked about. Hmmm maybe the earlier patients were trying to make sure she had a rounded view of them as a whole medical person rather than just their skin?? Anyways, I wanted a second opinon about my acne treatments. She told me that my acne isn't that bad, but that she would put me on Accutane because she puts almost all of her acne-patients on Accutane. That was the first red flag. The next red flag went up when she suggested something else which I have previously researched and do not want to do because of my family's cancer history, and she told me I had nothing to worry about. Dr. Buscemi is always to the point and doesn't waste time but she has quickly given me the right diagnosis and prescription on several occasions where other dermatologists have failed. She also prescribed medication for a toe nail problem that was far, far superior to what I had been given by a podiatrist. read more

The staff..... Where can I start. The receptionist is pathetic. Talk of an attitude. She left myself and my daughter over an hour in the waiting room. There was nobody in the waiting room when we arrived for our appointment, she buzzed us in and the when other patients arrived she put them in rooms first because I did not tell her we were there...... She buzzed us in an hr before. When i complained she gave us the next available room and closed the door out, needless to say after waiting in the room 10 min, i was livid.. back the receptionist for another appointment as I could not wait any longer. Then I see another patient who was in the waiting room leaving before me. I was so annoyed with this receptionist, then Dr. Buscemi came along and said she would take me. She apologized for keeping me so long, I could not speak to her I was too annoyed. 3 weeks later.......Update... I called back today for my daughters next appointment and we have the same attitude from this receptionist. She was so bitchy on the phone. Dr Libby is super sweet but if you care about your time... Be prepared to wait. A lot. I've been there twice and both times I had to wait quite a while. This last time I had to wait almost 1 hour to be seen and my appointment lasted literally 6min. They put patients in the exam rooms so you think the office is empty but them you realize you've been waiting 25min on the exam room yourself... read more

The staff were dismissive and I sat in the examination room for 30 minutes waiting to be seen. The doctor didn't come in until 3:10 (my appt was at 2:30). When she did come, she was lovely, but took one look at the rash on my legs and gave her diagnosis. It's perfectly possible that she's seen it a million times and knew definitively what it was, but she didn't ask me about my medical history or anything else. I have occasional botox and filler and I have seen other Dr's but you will not see better results from anyone. This review is for Dr. Alison Gruen, I've never seen Buscemi. After reading the previous reviews I'm always stymied as to how to evaluate reviews on Yelp. I can only give you my experience. I've been a patient of Dr. Gruen for over 7 years. I only go once a year for a body scan. I'm fortunate not to have any dermatological problems and I'm not vain enough to want botox or other cosmetic treatment. This is a very busy office and it's true that sometimes the wait is a fairly long time, however, I feel Dr. Gruen is worth the wait and I schedule my time accordingly. She always takes enough time to make me feel comfortable and answers any questions I have. She is very conservative in her evaluation of "spots" I have on my body (usually my arms) She will tell me there is nothing to worry about, but if I want it off for cosmetic reasons or just peace of mind she is accommodating. In my long standing time on this earth and with some past medical training, I realize that most dermatological problems are treated similarly (they're wet and you dry them or they're dry and you moisten them, if they're serious you remove them...that's it) Prevention and attention (sun screen and cover up) are the hallmark of keeping your skin and self healthy. Dr. Gruen is competent and caring. Now to the office staff, they are okay, not overly friendly but hey! I go there to see the doctor, not make small talk or friends with the receptionist. read more

WORST doctor ever. She took all of 4 minutes to complete a full body scan. The only words she spoke (in response to my direct questions) were: "Looks fine to me, but I can take it off." Translation: I'm only interested in trolling for extra fees here." I have no confidence in this exam and am going to ask insurance if they can refuse payment and I can go to someone else. read more

I really like Dr. Buscemi and the whole staff in her office. I had a spot on my nose which I had convinced myself was cancer. Finally, I went to see Dr. Buscemi, and I am so happy that I did. She gave me a biopsy on the area, and now I finally know that it is not cancer! I had been dreading the experience so much, and it turned out to be very easy and painless. The people who answer the phones and greet you are also very helpful and sweet. I was in and out of there within an hour, and feel so much better. They also prescribed an excellent new cream for my complexion, which I love. read more
